I'm extremely glad to be back at The Dental Shoppe. I had to switch dentists for awhile (long story related to insurance), and it just reinforced how excellent the folks here are. I've needed a lot of work done on my teeth over the years, and I have always felt safe and cared for here. I have some pretty intense anxiety about my teeth and visiting the dentist, so this is extra important for me. I just went in for a cleaning and check-up, and Dr. Sullivan and Kelly (and everyone I've ever seen here) are knowledgable, skilled, and they have always listen and do their best to keep me comfortable. I'm pleased with the quality of care I received at The Dental Shoppe. That said, I'm frustrated with their billing practices in regard to insurance. Before having an expensive dental procedure, I inquired at the front desk about my out-of-pocket cost. I received a quote, and then paid this amount when the procedure was over. It was not a small sum of money, but I knew the procedure would be expensive, so I was prepared. After the procedure, I received a large, surprise invoice from The Dental Shoppe. My dental insurance had denied coverage after the fact. This more than tripled my out-of-pocket cost. Yikes. I don't blame The Dental Shoppe for the denial of coverage. I'm frustrated, however, that in quoting me a price for the procedure, they apparently assumed coverage that didn't exist. They should have quoted me the actual price, and told me that any coverage was, at best, uncertain. As I said, I'm happy with the quality of care I received at The Dental Shoppe, but I feel misled about the pricing. If you go here and intend to rely on dental insurance, in whole or in part, I'd recommend you get a quote for the full amount, assume zero coverage, then budget for that--even if The Dental Shoppe tells you some or all of your procedure is covered. read more

I have been to this dentist shoppe a few times for cleanings. I was told I needed a crown on the last molar on the bottom left and came in and received the temp crown. I commented that I was in pain after the procedure and told i could take OTC pain reducers. Came back 2 weeks later to get the permanent and told the doctor that i was still in pain. She said that meant I needed a root canal. Asked why i wasn't told this was a possibility at the start and she said well its always a possibility. The cavity you came in for filling today may also need a root canal. She then asked me if i wanted to leave because I was apparently unhappy. I thought this was odd reaction and not what i want from someone working on my mouth. I told her I had already paid for the filling and she said they could refund the money. I went ahead and got the cavity filled and a referral for a root canal which i would have to have before the permanent was to go on my molar. I took OTC pain relievers for the pain in my molar which was managing it fine until one day i was eating some tortilla chips and was struck by immense pain from the temp molar. I'd hope it would pass was a one time mistake but no - I then started experiencing the worst dental pain of my life which lasted until I got the root canal which took about another 10 days to make appts to for the initial visit to the endo, get more xrays and schedule the root canal appt. The endo prescribed my stronger pain reliever which did not remove the pain but left me in a bit of a stupor and made me sleep half the time. I missed 2.5 days of work and otherwise led my life with a throbbing pain that overwhelmed the left lower side of my face. When I saw the endodontist they told me that tooth may not take a crown because of prior bone damage next to the tooth from an impacted wisdom tooth extracted decades ago. I may need to have the tooth extracted. Now im thinking Im going through all of this pain and expense for a tooth that may just need to be extracted. When I got the root canal they told me the tooth was also cracked - i think this happened when i was getting the temp crown. Prior to the proceedure for the crown I had had zero discomfort around this tooth. After the proceedure when i would rinse my mouth I saw small bits of black material which must have been the dried blood coming out of the tooth. Why did Dr Sullivan send me down this path? I guess she got the business of giving me the crown and doing a filling but I dont think shes concerned with my health and well being read more

I'm writing this as a pretty angry almost patient. I scheduled an appointment over two months ago and they confirmed it yesterday. Today, the day before, someone calls me up and cancels because they just recently decided to not accept my insurance. No apology, no referral. Just rudeness and disrespect. In these last two months, I could have been looking for another provider and getting on their schedule. They just wasted my time and showed not an ounce of empathy. Would not recommend if you're a new patient and they make you schedule months out. It's a crap shoot as to whether or not they'll cancel you right before your visit. read more

After 2 years of quarantining, I was really in need of a checkup and cleaning. The Dental Shoppe did a remarkably thorough job with a friendly and professional touch. So let's just say that yesterday I had a situation with my teeth and it I needed a emergency rescue. Like emergency!!!!!!!!!!! I called around the hill, and it was quite difficult because to find an opening the day of was seemingly impossible. The other dental offices weren't that nice but at the dental shoppe, they were so nice and got me in. It was a consultation but they ended up getting me in! I am terrified of the dentist and I still don't care much in going in. Worst dental patient ever! But, with their fast fingers, I might just be a regular. Maybe........ My fix was fast, and definitely not painless, but as painless as a visit to the dentist can be. The staff seems to be women only, and I am totally into that. It was comforting. Those ladies sure know what they are doing!!! :) This place saved me from looking like a crack addict. Thank you Tara's! The Dentist and assistant were both named Tara. :) As for the work that Dr. Tara did was actually better than my initial dentist that did my cosmetic work, and that in itself is a winner in my book. I just had a 2 hour exam, cleaning, x-rays and spending that amount of time with the team and dentist was wonderful. (And yes, I actually like going to the dentist - especially the outcome). The assistants and hygienist (and the Dentist) were personable, great at their jobs, and definitely seem to enjoy where they work - which makes all the difference. I've been going to the dental shoppe for years and have had a good experience. I even referred my friends. However, i had a terrible experience today and can no longer recommend dr. Sullivan. I had to have two fillings replaced and was quite anxious because i find the numbing process very painful. Dr Sullivan was impatient and short with me. Even after i told her i was nervous, she didn't warn me before bringing out the needle with the anesthetic, and she complained that i was "thrashing" about, which was an overreaction. She did not ask me once if i was okay, nor did she walk me through any alternatives or offer to go slower. I was the one who suggested i only do one filling instead of two because i was in so much pain. People don't like going to the dentist because it's uncomfortable and even scary to have someone poking around in your mouth, and in my opinion, you shouldn't be a dentist if you can't manage to have compassion for your patients. I know it's difficult to treat someone who is nervous but I don't think i am the first or last person to walk into that office feeling anxious. I'm giving this office two stars instead of one because the dental hygienist assisting during my procedure was kind and answered all of my questions. She was the one who kept asking if i was okay and treated me like a person rather than an annoyance. I've also had great experiences with the other hygienists who have done my cleanings and xrays but at the end of the day, if the dentist isn't kind and patient, you don't want to visit their office. read more

Overall, Dr. Sullivan and the assistants/techs at The Dental Shoppe are all very nice and do great work. That said, their scheduling leave MUCH to be desired. I am opting to find another dentist, as THEY needed to reschedule my appointment this October and said they couldn't get me in until April. I recently moved to Cap Hill, and as much as I hate going to the dentist these people made me want to stop by and drop off food for them on my way to work from now on. Everything is brand new, including the high-end equipment and devices that they use. The patient chair has massage settings! Nina was really cool, has great taste in music, and was great conversation while I waited. Dr. Sullivan was personable, wicked smart (insert Goodwill Hunting accent), and gentle while working on me. She will be my dentist indefinitely and I've already referred her to all of my friends and family in the area. Love this place! read more

The office is meticulously designed, Nina, who is the front desk person and the dental assistant is wonderful and the the doctor herself is personable and skilled. Short version: After subsequent visits, I feel confident in upgrading my review to 3 stars, based on convenience, speed, ease of scheduling and the ability to submit your paperwork online. I'm seriously not sure how becoming a new patient could have been easier, and their location (plus parking!) is super killer (you're close to everything Pike/Pine!). But seriously: I hate insurance calculations. Like, super hate. People who figure it out should be paid a LOT more than whatever they're making. Generally, I'm used to receiving a little more proactive "hand holding" customer-service wise, and the lack of it made for a more negative initial experience than necessary. However, Dr. Sullivan was very concerned with making sure my questions were answered once she realized I had them, which is a bonus in a healthcare professional these days. Long version: Despite my concerns, I realized that maybe I hadn't been the best patient or asked the right questions. Plus, looking at the calendar and not willing to gamble on finding appointments (end of the year busy season, with a reasonable commute, and without having to take time off of work) - I decided to suck it up and see if I could make a good situation out of bad. Shortly after my initial review, I called the office and [details redacted] did not have a conversation that gave me any additional confidence with regard to the situation. So during my 2nd appointment, I took the opportunity to ask questions about my treatment plan. To my great relief, all of my questions were answered readily and cheerfully, and I left with a complete understanding of the procedures and what they would entail. I still didn't have a super great answer about the billing/insurance estimate issue, but decided not to press. I started to feel like I was being nit picky and that I was wrong to question it at all. 3rd appointment: By now I'd just decided to go through with my treatment plan despite the cost and my misgivings. I didn't want to have to find another dentist that I liked as well or schedule appointments during the time I needed them. This appointment was smooth, pain free, and *fast*. I was delighted to be done about 15 minutes early! I paid the amount they estimated for me and hoped for the best. After reviewing my insurance information for what felt like HOURS, I realized that my irritation was the difference between what my insurer communicated and what the Dental Shoppe's estimate conveyed. In short, no one explained the difference between their charges and what my insurance covered, or *how* they calculated the estimated amount due. Maybe that isn't important to you, but I like to know how much I'm being charged, where my healthcare dollars are going, how my insurance plan works, and how to limit my out of pocket expenses. Sure - we could argue whether it is the provider's responsibility to help the patient in this way, but regardless, I'm used to working with billing specialists, and my initial experience would have been better if The Dental Shoppe had one. All that being said? I would definitely recommend Dr. Sullivan to anyone in the Capitol Hill, First Hill, South Lake Union, Montlake, or Eastlake neighborhoods. read more

Today was my first appointment at The Dental Shoppe. I recently moved to the Capitol Hill area and wanted a Dentist close by. My previous Dentist in Portland set the bar very high. So my expectations were low. The Dental Shopped has a nice, clean office, albeit a little more sterile feeling than necessary, maybe which gives off a cold feeling. As far as skill/professionalism. Dr. Sullivan is fantastic. Very nice, very thorough, none of the horror stories you hear from some people about a Dentist who suggests unnecessary treatments. I was very impressed with her. My hygienist's name was Samira. She was excellent. I can't really say enough. She was so polite, gentle, thorough and smart. I was beyond impressed with her professionalism, she was humble, very good at what she does. Nothing bad to say about her. Unfortunately she was just in for the day, filling in for someone else. That's a shame, because I would definitely want her as my hygienist next time. There was a little bit of cattiness I noticed with some of the others in the office, as far as the way they talked to Samira. I thought that was a bit childish, and unprofessional. Samira rose above it, didn't make any comments back to them, even in the face of a few rather rude and condescending comments lobbed at her. While I understand that she is a temporary fill-in, I think their behavior was pretty inappropriate. She was fantastic in every way, so I will chalk it up to people back-biting out of some kind of inner jealousy/competition. Had it not been for the behavior of these other folks, I would have definitely given TDS a 5-Star review. No frills, basic Dental office, but they delivered an overall experience that definitely deserves 4-Stars. I will definitely go back in 6 months for my next cleaning. I hope that today was just a one-time thing as far as the catty behavior of a select few. read more

Everyone in this office is fantastic! I've had a few fillings done with Dr. McGrath and each visit has been very easy to schedule, painless and a seamless experience. Awhile back, one of my fillings had chipped but Dr. McGrath and his team fixed it for no additional cost because it was the "right thing to do". The Dental Shoppe has also been very communicative with the other specialists I've been seeing (Ortho and Oral Surgeons) in completing my tooth implant treatment. After my first visit with Dr. Sullivan, I will definitely be coming back and am happy to have found a great dentist in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The office is very nicely appointed and very clean. You can tell Dr. Sullivan has put a lot of effort into creating a clean, comfortable environment. All the equipment appeared brand new and they used some high tech instruments I actually hadn't seen before. The massaging chair during the appointment was also much appreciated. Most importantly, Dr. Sullivan and her assistant Nina provided great care. Dr. Sullivan was very knowledgeable and took the time to ask me about my past dental health history and health goals going forward. Additionally, many of the examination and cleaning procedures which usually cause me some discomfort were actually very easy and pain free with Dr. Sullivan...a great change from some of my past dentists. Dr. Sullivan is fantastic! I initially started seeing her when I moved to the area about two years ago. I had a bit of a traumatic experience with a dentist when I was young that I still struggle with, even in biannual cleanings. She is very thoughtful with my concerns and her and her staff are very cautious to make me comfortable. Cavities can be a bit pricy though and Delta dental isn't to keen with them, but hey, it's forced me to floss more! My husband referred me to the Dental Shoppe after he had a good experience with some difficult dental procedures. Like many people, I don't like visiting the dentist and am usually on edge while there. My husband assured me that Dr. Sullivan and her team were really professional, nice and that I'd be in great hands -- he was right. The practice itself is located in a very convenient place on Capitol Hill and even has parking (garage parking!). The clinic was very clean when I walked in and I was immediately greeted. I only had a teeth cleaning but even those make me nervous. But the technician did a great job and talked me through the parts to ease ease my nerves. In no time I was done and Dr. Sullivan was there to complete the examination. She was very friendly and knowledgable. I left with dental goodies and a big smile on my face! We were in Seattle for a few days during a pre-cruise vacation over the 4th of July, 2018, and my elderly mother had a dental emergency. I placed an emergency call to Dr. Sullivan on a Thursday night and she called me right away, even though we were not her patients. She advised me to call the office the next day and assured me someone would be able to help us. The next day (Friday), they gave us an appointment and the doctor and staff in shift went above and beyond to help my mom. We are so grateful for their kindness. I definitely recommend this practice. Location is walking distance from home, the office is very clean, neat & cute, the chairs have built in massagers and the staff is excellent. Alike everyone else, I hadn't been to the dentist in years. Scary. The last time I saw a dentist I left the office cringing and scarred for life. But alas, I had a toothache. Painful! Couldn't sleep at night. I let it go on for a couple of days but couldn't bear the ibuprofen and ice packs any more. Made an appointment for a week in advance, thought ok. I can wait. But no, couldn't even make it through work! I called the office with my ailments and talked to Carrie (spelling?) and they were able to fit me in the day of. Dr. Sullivan was excellent. emailed twice about emergency extraction that needed to be done asap with no insurance. cash up front like the old days. They took x-rays, said i would need an oral surgeon... for a normal tooth extraction. sent me on my way. Didn't share my x-rays with anyone, so i had to get more taken at the other dentist i went to, who just numbed me up and pulled it out. other dentist laughed at this place. twas a simple extraction but they just wanted my 150$ for 15mins. so i feel like its a scam out of my money, they could have said they cant do extractions over an email. read more

The Dental Shoppe is fantastic. I had an emergency and they fit me the same day. After stabilizing me, two days later I went in for the major work. I having had three other experiences with root canals with other dentists and I was really expecting the worst. It was easy breezy. In the past I felt, like I was choking for three hours. Dr. Sullivan made it quick and painless. Her and her assistant(s) had great "bed side" manner. One thing that I did notice that is certainly worth mentioning, all of the technology and tools they used were ALL top-shelf. I don't know anything about these sorts of things but I could really tell they were using top end products. Heck the chair was heated and massaging! I just moved to Seattle from south King County and was looking for a new dentist. The Dental Shoppe is very close to my apartment and got good reviews so I decided to try it out. The staff were very friendly and the office was clean and modern. It was all going well until Dr. Sullivan told me I needed ELEVEN FILLINGS. My last dental check up was less than a year earlier and they hadn't recommended any fillings. I went back to my old dentist in Kent for a second opinion and he disagreed with 10 of Dr. Sullivan's recommendations. I would advise anyone to stay away from this dentist's office unless you want to spend hundreds on unnecessary dental work. read more

Alright, so I've been going to Dental Shoppe for 2 years now, and I feel like it's a serious relationship now- I'm not dating around to find "the one" dental facility anymore. I think I've found it. Here's my love story: Dental Shoppe is great- Let's start from the front. The front desk (also named Tara) has been welcoming, very professional, and organized. I do take into consideration consistency of front office workers since a lot of medical and dental practices have a high turnover rate if workers are unsatisfied. Dental Shoppe has not dropped the ball on anything in terms of scheduling or recalls, etc. 5 stars for front desk. Back office- everyone, and I mean EVERYONE I've encountered: dental hygienists, assistants, Dr Sullivan- has been incredible well spoken and just gosh darn kind. Dental offices get a bad rep because dentistry is invasive and all up in your personal space. But I've never once felt like I couldn't express my concerns or have been worried about sanitation or communication issues or anything. 5 stars for back office. Aesthetics- I am impressed. I'm gonna geek out for a second. The dental lights are affixed to a track on the ceiling so it never feels crowded like some dental chairs can feel. Let's talk about the dental chairs- YES, they're massage chairs. You can just request to have it be turned on if someone doesn't offer first. The monitors for xrays are always in plain view so you feel like you're informed and service is transparent- not like the dentists are trying to hide anything from you or make "hm hum" noises while you try to glimpse at your xrays. The ceilings are high and the operatories just feel more open. Dr Sullivan is great, and you can tell she's genuinely interested in your oral health. She's smiling all the time and I have never felt like I've gotten dental treatment I didn't need. In general, I walk into my scheduled appointments, and I never wait for more than 5 minutes. Everything is very timely. I would highly recommend going to Dental Shoppe. I've referred coworkers and friends because I want Dental Shoppe to thrive. Her office is impeccably clean, stylishly modern and her dental assistants seem to genuinely enjoy what they do. Everyone seemed excited to share their wealth of knowledge and explain why/how they were doing throughout my appointment. So far, I have had two cleanings. My last hygienist recommended the DiamondClean toothbrush by Philips--this single suggestion has made me look forward to brushing and travel since the toothbrush charges by USB. I also scheduled to have an internal bleaching procedure to correct a darkened tooth. Well, I missed my original appointment for the bleaching. They kindly rescheduled for another appointment. Although Dr. Sullivan clearly explained what the procedure entailed, the words DRILL, numbing injection (I very much dislike needles) and pressure still stood out. During the second appointment I was an emotional wreck once I sat in the chair and was surrounded by all of the instruments. Despite the fact that the entire room had been prepped and the schedule cleared for my procedure, Dr. Sullivan and her assistant actually reminded me that I could hold off until I was more comfortable with the procedure since it was simply cosmetic and not critical to my health. I think this speaks volumes. I never felt rushed to make my decision and I left feeling like I had made the right choice. This is a true refection of the quality of service you can expect from Dr. Sullivan. I've seen several dentists as a result of relocation, but none of them are as attentive, compassionate and knowledgable as Dr. Sullivan. read more

I've had dental work done at The Dental Shoppe several times, most recently last week. It was an emergency situation, I was in a lot of pain and the office fit me in immediately. Dr. Sullivan and her staff were kind and empathetic, went the extra mile (and more!) to alleviate my discomfort and, after thoroughly exploring all the options available, were able to get me in right away to an oral surgeon nearby for the necessary extraction. I was very impressed with their communication style, felt very confident in their expertise and appreciated the fact that they explained everything to me and factored in all of my needs in this last minute scheduling situation. read more

I went to see Dr. Sullivan to establish a new dentist since I had recently moved to the area. Great location, clean lobby, and modern technology, but my two stars comes from my interactions with everyone. Everyone seemed very robotic and not very warm. I felt was I treated like a child and Dr. Sullivan listed all these foods not eat that I already don't eat and that I need to drink more water when I already drink a lot. She didn't really listen to me when I told her I'm pretty healthy and I'm a regular brusher and flosser. I don't think she believed me. Then she said I have four cavities that she couldn't see on the x-rays, but could see by looking at my teeth. I found that be odd. After that I had my teeth cleaned and the lady who cleaned my teeth also made me feel like a child. Everything I had to say about my oral routine was not good enough, then she showed me how to brush and floss my teeth like I have never done that before. I visited this office on 4/11/2017. The doctor spent 5 minutes dealing with me and after a short evaluation, I was sent to a root canal specialist without any recommendation regarding my treatment plan. In the same time, the assistant was basically pushing a deep cleaning treatment and the doctor back her up. After one month and a half, I received over email a claim for the X-Ray exam. I went and paid for it since I understood it's not covered, but the whole experience regarding this medical office was disappointing. read more

I had a great experience at the Dental Shoppe. When I walked in it was felt more like I was going to a spa than to a dental office. The place is absolutely beautiful.
