    Paneer pakore

I frequently tell acquaintances about The Dhaba, as this is by far the best Indian restaurant I have ever tried. I tell them all the same thing: the first time I ate here, I was nearly moved to tears. That's no exaggeration! Perhaps I'm deeply biased, but I swear I can taste the love in their dishes. The restaurant building itself is a little old and worn, but the atmosphere inside is cozy and tasteful. Each table has a white tablecloth, dinnerware placed, and red cloth napkins. The details help elevate the vibe. They've done well with what they have. The service is always top notch. The staff is attentive to their customers' needs, while being genuine and kind. I haven't tested this theory, but based on the way they approach their patrons with such care, I think they would accommodate just about any request! They keep an eye on beverages, get dishes out quickly, and greet everyone with warmth and a smile. I have tried many Indian dishes. Though it is often regarded as less authentic Indian, I will ALWAYS order their kashmiri chicken tikka. This dish is so flavorful and creamy. It's like butter chicken, but better. I don't know what their secret is, but I love it. I also order two servings of garlic naan so I have lots left to take home. This visit, I enjoyed a couple apps, which are pictured. The samosa plate comes with two samosas, which are large (nearly the size of my fist). They are filled with a potato and vegetable mixture, which is deliciously seasoned and accompanied by a lovely sauce with chick peas. I also ordered the paneer pakore. Paneer is a lovely and popular cheese, which is used in many dishes as an alternative to meat. This paneer was fried, though, like an Indian mozzarella stick. The batter is seasoned with Indian spices, giving it a unique flavor. A great thing about The Dhaba's menu is that each item has a wine pairing suggestion to elevate the experience even more. I am committed to trying so much more of what this restaurant has to offer. If you love Indian or your considering branching out and trying it for the first time, this is your new spot. Happy eating!

My favorite spot for indian food! I loveee the tika masala with the garlic bread and we had their mango lassi which is amazing! Very dense mango flavor I might get addicted haha! The workers are very nice and accommodating and the ambiance is chill would recommend.

Very disappointing and disrespectful experience. There was a misunderstanding with one of the items we ordered after I asked multiple times before ordering. When the food arrived and it was not what I understood it would be, I explained the issue, but the manager was extremely rude and refused to help. He said the item would not be removed from the bill, even though we didn't eat it . The situation got worse when he brought the bill before we were even done and later threatened to call the police. After we paid, my husband came to speak with him, and the manager changed his story. When I explained what actually happened, he called me a liar in front of other customers. He then claimed he had videos but refused to show them unless we called the police. He eventually called the police and claimed we were fighting and had not paid, even though we had already paid the bill !!!!!. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I have ever had. The issue was not only the food, but the manager's disrespectful behavior, threats, and the way he humiliated a customer publicly. I do not recommend this place.

my go to indian food spot! food is ALWAYS delicious. i order to-go everytime and they tend to be behind on the orders, but it ends up making the order that much more hot and fresh....so i'm always more or less okay with it LOL. this most recent time, i got their chicken korma (a must!) their shrimp saag, an order of garlic naan, and white rice to go w it all. very reasonably priced, nice-sized portions, delicious and flavorful - i'll come back to them everytime i want indian food!

I stopped in for dinner Sunday night and it was very busy! I ordered a mango lassi, garlic naan, and chicken tikka masala. The food was all very good and flavorful! It felt very authentic and homey. The staff were quick to refill my water.

Wednesday evening visit, the food was really good. My party had a couple appetizers(dhaba papi chaat & keema samosas) and a couple curry dishes(chicken and lamb) for our entrees. The food came out too hot to eat, but tasted well once it cooled off. No issues with the service. I'd consider visiting again the next time I'm out in Tempe.

Stopped by last week for the first time in a while and it was just as great as I remember! The restaurant was really busy when we went, but the staff was still very friendly and attentive. I ordered the Maharaja Patiala Tandoori Thali with lamb. The lamb curry was rich and spicy, and came with slices of naan, a helping of biryani topped with tandoori chicken, buttery and well spiced daal, raita, and a desert. I love this menu item, it's huge and comes with a little bit of everything, which makes it perfect for those like me who struggle to just choose one dish. This place get's a lot of attention for a reason, just check out all the awards on the front wall!

Terrible experience. The food wasn't what we expected, but the real issue was the staff's attitude. When we raised a concern, instead of trying to help, they were rude, dismissive, and even called my wife a liar. No customer deserves to be treated that way. We left feeling disrespected and will not be returning. 1 star.

Had a great time here before going to see a show at Gammage! We ordered the samosas, lamb korma, chicken tikka masala and garlic naan. Everything was delicious. I loved the lamb korma!

As I sat down, they got this papad with Chutneys! The setup got me in the mood to enjoy some chaat. Ordered Papadi Chaat and it was lip smacking ! The Papadi itself was freshly fried, I think. Tasty and I could feel the freshness. Dahi bhalle was equally delicious. Best part was - curd wasn't sweet! A rarity! Enjoyed a lot. Will visit again for proper lunch / dinner food. Servers were friendly and though it was taking a while for food to be served, I enjoyed the ambience of the place.

This and Thirukuppusamy's in Chandler are the only two. If you are from North Phoenix or West Valley, this is the closet place to get a MEAN dosa. All of the South Indian food is great here. If you come here and expect a good Butter Chicken, lol. Order South Indian food and you won't be disappointed. The food at Chennai Cafe is salty, spicey, and tangy. It's got a good mix of all the flavors that remind me of home. I specifically get the Thali meals. These meals have a bit of every curry that is made that day. Usually split between 2 veg curries, 2 nonveg curries, rice, naan (roti), yogurt, and a dessert. All the curries were excellent. I couldn't eat the entire thali as the quantity of food will put you to sleep, so I ate all the meat stuff with the rice and bread and took all the vegetarian/dessert stuff home. Service is typical Indian restaurant, bunch of dudes standing around. You'll have to flag them down anytime you want something. Don't be shy to do so! That's how you do it at an Indian restaurant. Ambiance is typical no-frills Indian restaurant. Don't expect white glove treatment here. Small dining room area with chairs pretty close to each other. However, know what you are going to order and it'll come out fresh and spicy. Definitely an all time favorite for me in the Valley.

When we arrived the employee told us it was a 15 minute wait and asked for our name and phone number. We looked forward to our meal and so after we gave our information and then left to walk around until we received the call. After about 15 minutes we got a call at 1:37pm that our table was ready. It took us about 3-4 minutes to walk back and we were promptly seated. I was happy to see that there were real plates unlike the paper plates we had to use the last time. I filled my plate and while it was just as good as the last time we were there I quickly remembered how spicy the food is. I sat with my plate of food as I made it through the spicy but otherwise tasty food. Not everything was hot. Some of the food even though presented on heated elements was actually slightly cold. When they cleared the table of our dirty plates I asked them to leave our water cups and the water pitcher which was still 1/3 filled as my mouth was still recovering from the heat/spiciness. Then to my surprise one of the employees approached our table and told us people were waiting and wanting us to leave. I have never felt so insulted by a merchant or dining establishment. We still hadnt drunk our water and I had paid the bill at 2:02pm so it hadnt even been 30 minutes since we were sat for our meal. If you don't mind being rushed during your meal then this is the place for you!

but IT WAS DELICIOUS…read more I had a party of 6 and we ordered: 6 Mango Lassis, 1 Mild Butter Chicken, 1 Lamb Tikka Supreme 16" Large Pizza, 3 Garlic Naans, 1 Masala Fries with Tamarind Chutney, 1 Naan Taco with Tamarind Chutney and Lamb Tikka, 1 order of Samosas with Tamarind Chutney, 1 Samosa Chaat with Tamarind Chutney, and 1 Large Rice. Yes, that was a lot of food. Yes, I know what you're thinking. And no... we didn't take anything home. Why? BECAUSE WE ATE EVERY. LAST. BITE. Typically my family eats, then takes leftovers home for later, but we genuinely could not stop eating. The first thing that came out was the Lamb Tikka Supreme Pizza and OH MY HEAVENS... that combination was insane in the BEST way possible. We got the 16" large, so our party of six got about two slices each, and honestly? Who knew curry on pizza would work THIS well? So creative and SO flavorful. Then we tried the naan taco and Masala fries because... well... IT'S A NAAN TACO. I HAD TO. And let me just say: both somehow exceeded every expectation I already had. Usually when restaurants try fusion combinations like this, one part falls behind -- maybe the texture is off or the flavors don't fully come together -- but they absolutely perfected it here. Every bite had crunch, crispiness, flavor, and balance. And being able to wash it all down with a creamy mango lassi??? Ughhhh somebody pinch me, I'm in paradise. (The mango lassis were in the fridge by the ice cream, by the way.) Of course I also had to try the classic butter chicken because I judge places by how well they execute the classics... and WOW. God dammit, it was magnificent. Don't even get me started on the perfectly buttery, crispy naan. Or the samosa chaat, which was super filling but somehow still had this refreshing sauce that kept making me go back for another bite. For dessert we ordered Gajar Halwa, Matka Kulfi, and Kesar Pista. Honestly? I had NO idea what any of those were when I ordered them. But now that I've tried all three (and they were ALL amazing), here's how I'd describe them: Gajar Halwa tastes like carrot cake filling had a relationship with rice pudding and caramelized milk flavors... and then BOOM Gajar Halwa was born. Matka Kulfi is served in a clay pot and has a creamier, denser texture than regular ice cream. It has a frozen condensed milk cheesecake type of energy. Kesar Pista (saffron and pistachio) tasted like pistachio gelato with floral vanilla-honey notes. Overall: 10/10. The food came out with perfect timing despite us ordering enough food to feed a mini army. At the time there only seemed to be two workers and I genuinely have NO idea how they were doing it all. They were preparing our huge order, handling takeout orders, answering phone calls, working the register, AND making fresh naan nonstop. Also... this place is open until 12 AM??? Yeahhhh this is officially being added to my late-night eats list. I approve!!!! 10/10 recommend.

So I was excited to hear there's a similar concept in Tempe. I stopped by on a Monday for an early dinner. Parking wasn't an issue in the free lot they share with several other businesses including Wingstop. Ambiance (3.5/5): This is a casual eatery. And a relatively small one at that. There are 10 tables or so. The type of place you go for the food, and not the ambiance. Service (2/5): You order at the counter and they bring your food to you. The guy working the cash register seemed to be out of it. I pretty much had to guide him to do his job. A little frustrating, but not a big deal because service isn't a big part of the experience here anyways. Drinks (4.5/5): They have Indian beer, they have mango lassi, so that alone makes it an interesting assortment. I ended up going with a cheaper option: a bottled Mexican Coke. They have a decent selection of bottled beverages as well as fountain drinks. Food (4/5): While they have some items on the menu outside of this, I recommend you try one of their Indian pizzas. That means you should add Indian ingredients to your pizza. That's what makes the establishment unique. I created my own pizza. You choose from two sizes and you can select up to three toppings, your sauce base, and cheese. I went with the masala sauce, chicken tikka, lamb tikka, and paneer. The pizzas are made to order and came out nice and hot. First off, beyond the uniqueness of the offering, the pizza is quite good. Two different types of meats and a special cheese made it a delicious pizza. The crust is buttered, and while it's not thin crust, the pizza is on the thinner side. There were some red peppers on my pizza. I didn't order any. I'm not sure if it was a mistake or it's part of the masala sauce. Either way, I'm not a fan of peppers so I had to pick them out of my pizza which was a bit annoying. Still worth it given how good the pizza is. If you've never had Indian-inspired pizza, and you're looking for an affordable meal, check them out!
