We like the Dhaba. We have been here a few times and sometimes the wait can be long (for a table or food) but is worth it. They always go above and beyond in some way whether it be offering us extra naan at no charge or recently, my husband always gets lessis, and they gave him a to go one which just made his day. Pros: 1. Acceptable food: Ordered Tikka Masala, and it was decent. One of the few places who's tikka actually has less than 35% cream in it. There definitely could have been more ingredients/spices used as I mostly tasted cardamom and kashmiri pepper. There was no cinnamon detected. No bueno. The garlic naan was meh. Almost like it wasn't all the way cooked. Overall, it was acceptable. Very small portions btw. Cons: 1.  Unclean Restaurant: Observed mold on ceilings. The cup of water that was provided also had rust in the bottom of the cup. Very dingy aura. 2. Terrible Customer service/decorum: Before I was even greeted upon entry, I was asked to dispose of my canned diet crush Soda. The server, Karan, stated that I would have to order my food to go if I didn't let him throw away my drink. I asked why? And he says "Because we sell soda here". And for how much? $4-5. Do they offer Crush Soda? No. In one other yelp review by "James R", this Karan threatened a man and his friends for their refusal to throw away their dunkin donuts coffee. You can search for this yourself. Unreal and borderline comedic. Imagine being down that bad. Sad thing is that if it weren't for this abhorrent practice, I may have ordered more food and provided a generous tip like I have with many...many other indian restaurants in the valley. 2. Overpriced: $4 for a bottle of water. $5 for a $0.75 can of soda. $20 for a small bowl of tikka masala & rice + 1 garlic naan, cut in half. 3. Terrible Parking/Location: Restaurant is located in a not too friendly area. After squeezing into one of the few/narrow parking spots, I was solicited by a homeless man in front of the entrance. Visited the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon as we were in the mood to indulge in some Indian delicacies. Once the entire group was present we were promptly seated. The ambiance is very homey and warm and as it's a family owned restaurant it gives the warm vibes. The restaurant was fairly crowded. We all ordered lassi ranging from mango, rose , sweet to salted! All of them tasted fabulous but only drawback is that the sweetness in lassi cannot be altered I would love that option! For the main course nothing stood out everything was edible but I was extremely disappointed with the recommendation I went ahead with - the paneer hariyali tikka. The name itself suggests green but there was nothing green about it not the flavor nor color. Back home this is a favorite and this didn't match up. We were treated with hot jalebis at the end. I would also like to mention that although the place appears clean I saw 2 roaches on the wall at our table which instantly killed my appetite. Veg was god but non-veg chicken was very salty when my colleagues complained they took it back and brought back the same food but placing it on tandoor. Perfect spice levels for the curry, delicious garlic naan and samosas, and sweet, sticky jalebi as a complimentary treat at the end. Not sure what else I could ask for! Worth mentioning that we arrived a bit early on a Saturday and it did take a few minutes to get seated even though it wasn't crowded (yet), but business picked up VERY quickly around 6pm. My husband and I came to The Dhaba after receiving many recommendations from friends. It's located in a small strip mall and can be somewhat hard to miss. The inside is pretty small so reservations beforehand are definitely recommended. For our meal we wanted to try something new for an appetizer. We had the Bombay Bhel Puri. The portion was very big, we couldn't even finish it all. The flavors were good, but it wasn't my favorite dish. For a main entrée we stuck to our tried and true, the Chicken Tikka Masala. This one was a winner for us. The chicken was flavorful & juicy and the spice level was just right. Of course we had to have some garlic nann as well. It's been said that Dhaba means slow in Punjabi. May be the slowest service I've experienced in a decade. Only had one waitress (and two busboys??). Waitress spent 10 mins at one table. When she arrived at our table I noticed she was wearing an AirPod. Why?? This is significant because she totally missed my wife's drink order. We arrived at 7:15 pm and didn't receive our food til 8:20 pm. We ordered standard things: Lamb Korma, Chicken Tikka Massala, Chicken Curry. Couldn't understand what the heck was going on and why the food came out so slowly. A dude showed up to order a dish to go and I overheard the staff tell him it would take 7 minutes. Then why did my food take 50+ minutes??? And the food wasn't that great. Two of the dishes were OK but the Chicken Curry seemed like it had sand in it. The next morning I had the runs which lasted 3 days. Bottom line: it seems this restaurant was once well run and got good reviews. But not any more. If there is an owner out there who has delegated the running of his restaurant to others he should resume control ASAP as the people running the restaurant now are running it into the ground. read more

This place was recommended to me after talking about Marigold Madison, which until last night was my favorite Indian restaurant in the Valley. While I still have a special place in my heart for Marigold, it's about a 40 min drive (one way) to get there, and The Dhaba is about 15. When we pulled into the parking lot, I looked at how small this place was and I knew it was going to be great. I don't want to call it a hole in the wall, but it's a little tiny restaurant sandwiched between two other shops and reminded me so much of being back home in the Bay Area. We walked in and the smell of spices hit my nose and I was so excited to try the food. We were greeted and seated right away (I called first thing when they opened that day to make a reservation) and shown our reserved table. I didn't know how small it was before arriving but I was glad that we called ahead because there were quite a few reserved tables and they were getting busy. Once we sat down, we were given water and papadums with 3 different dips. All 3 were delicious but the red and green were the showstoppers. We already knew what we wanted as we order the same thing at every Indian restaurant - Paneer Tikka Masala for me, and Lamb Tikka Masala for my boyfriend, regular and/or garlic naan. I did actually take the time to look at the large menu and was pleasantly surprised that this place lists wines that pair well with each dish, which is a great touch. I ordered the Bregeon Muscadet (French white wine) and it was delicious. Not sweet, very dry and with a nice citrus flavor. We ordered our food next; we both like spicy but every restaurant's spice level is different so we ordered level 8 spicy with a side of vindaloo chili powder to add spice. The vindaloo chili powder has good flavor, but I will get a level 10 next time and skip the powder. Once we ordered, our food came out very quickly. I will say, the portion sizes are a little on the small side for the meat dish, but if you are ordering paneer there is plenty of food. Everything was delicious! Overall, this place was excellent. The only issue we did have was my boyfriend ordered another beer and as they got quite busy, our server forgot. This was not a big deal as he only ordered it because he thought I was still eating but I was more than full with food to take home for leftovers. When we got our bill, the waiter brought us a mango Lassi on the house, and even took off the charge for the beer my boyfriend ordered and received. I don't know about anyone else, but to me that was not something they had to do and just showed the level of customer service they strive to provide. AMAZING! WE HAVE GONE SEVERAL TIMES! We have gone several times and the food has always been amazing. We get level 7 spice and it's perfect. HOWEVER, if you're not used to eating ethnic spicy, do not get 7. If you're a mild spicy type of person, go much lower. My husband and I are used to spicy food, so that's why we got up to 7. I'm saddened to have to update my review but I'm just so disappointed in the price to portion ratio as of late. Tonight I spent 35 dollars on an order of chick vindaloo and chicken tikka masala. Both dishes come with a serving of rice. I waited 35 min for my order drove the 18 min back to my house to discover the vindaloo had 4 pieces of chicken and maybe 8 pieces of potato. I have to change my review to one star. Worst customer service. The girl took my order (1 malai kofta and 2 garlic naan) at 3:25 PM. She said it would be ready in 30 minutes around 4. My boyfriend went to pick up the food at 4 and they were so rude to him. They didn't have our food ready and said they still had to put it into the system. What? It had been more than half an hour. The "owner" tried to act like it was our fault because he said we must've called the "wrong place". Am glad to have chosen The Dhaba instead of other options in Tempe. The cosy restaurant is welcoming and the owner of the restaurant makes your experience very personalized. A fine choice of restaurant if you are in the Phoenix area. The meal starts with fried papad with 3 chutneys. For appetizers we tried the much recommended Chicken tikka samosa and paani puri & dahi papdi chaat. The chicken tikka samosa is yummy. We ordered garlic naan and lamb biryani for the main course. I had very bad experience twice at this restaurant. A year ago when we were here to dine in, the staff were very rude and kept us waiting for a long time to be seated. Couple of days back when we tried again as our friend wanted to try this, we got the same experience. The staff are not organized. They got confused and messed up with our seating arrangements. I have liked the food at The Dhaba and have taken my friends there and recommended it to others. However, today I had a very poor and bizarre experience. I am vegetarian and ordered the malai kofta as a to-go order. Malai kofta is a vegetarian curry dish. After picking it up and when I got home I saw that it was chicken. I called them and they asked me to text them the pics of the item. After I texted them the pics I threw away the chicken in the community dumpster. Being a vegetarian all my life I can't stand the smell of meat. I then called them back and they confirmed that they had messed up the order and had given me chicken korma instead. But they said in order to give me a refund I had to return to the restaurant with the chicken korma. I explained to them that I had thrown it out and why. They said their policy is to get the food back before they can give a refund. So instead of issuing a refund or a credit to a wronged customer, they are making the customer expend more effort to correct the restaurant's mistake! They also said that it's possible someone else in my household may be okay with eating meat so what if they had consumed the chicken korma dish in which case no refund would be due to me...what??? I informed them that this is bizarre and that I will be writing in Yelp and letting the owner know. They said go ahead. So here it is. read more

This place literally screams QUALITY Indian food. Just take a look at the pictures. Not a single picture which is looks oily, creamy (except for the yogurt in Samosa Chaat but that is supposed to be like that), and messy. The Samosa Chaat tasted really good, in terms of restaurant quality chaat. I think the chutneys might have been a bit too tangy, but it was still worth tasting. The Chole Bhatura was really good. Not too oily, and the chole itself was really tasty. I wish the Bhatura was a bit fluffier, but I think it was healthier this way. Finally, the Baingan Bharta was good in terms of quality, but in terms of taste was just a little bit lacking. I personally think it could have been a bit more flavorful by adding some more tomatoes and masala, but that could also be just me. The onion naan was also kind of bland, as I was expecting the onions to be spiced up a lot more to give the onion naan that type of masala flavor that it usually comes with. All the food was delicious, the Lamb korma was my favorite full of flavor and fork tender lamb meat. I got a spice level of 7 on both dishes and it was pretty hot so 7 and above is pretty spicy. The Chicken Tikka masala was also very rich and delicious with tender chicken. Lamb korma 10/10 Chicken Tikka masala 8/10 Now the garlic naan was amazing that i had to order more for home easily 10/10 garlic naan The Saffron rice was also very good fluffy and soft 9/10 It was my first time trying Jalebi and i loved it its very sweet and crunchy and oily 8/10 I did order the Gulab Jamun and it was also very good i don't have a pic of it tho 7/10 the only problem was that they only give you 3 of them for $6 and they are pretty small already The service was great both the host and waiter were very friendly with smiles on their faces 10/10 service and it didn't take long at all for the food to come out.
