The service is friendly and prices are very reasonable too. The clientele is diverse. On any given night it is not uncommon to find yourself sitting next to a Capitol Hill member of Congress on one end to a punk rock band, just finishing their set on another end. You got it love this kind of eating scene. Interesting characters to casual tourist is not uncommon. I always find this place accommodating to all, at any given hour....but get there early for brunch or soon after the Adams Morgan bars close because there is usually a wait and sometimes long line to get in. I am a huge an of the the French Toast, Eggs, Sausages and Home Fries deal. The homefries are perfect and always crispy! Side all of this with the free-refillable coffee going strong and you are wired! The Boozy Shake is a winner too!! On this particular night, I ordered the NY Strip and the French Toast Breakfast. Yes, a lot food and I ate it all! LOL. It was all cooked to perfection in generous portions and served up with great service that you expect in a diner. I had high hopes for this place in the beginning, but the service was not great and my burger was dry. I came here for lunch with my friends while exploring Adams Morgan. In the beginning the service was great, we were seated immediately and our waiter checked up on us often. After we ordered our appetizer the service started to worsen. We shared a large order of the onion rings between 3 people. It was a good portion since we didn't want to be too full for our food. Also the cheese sauce was very delicious. Tip: if you decide to order an appetizer at the same time as your food order it first so they can send it before taking the rest of your order otherwise it won't come out before the food. After we ate our appetizer our waiter came over and asked if we wanted our bill forgetting that we were still waiting for our main entrees. My friend ordered the Greek Salad, I ordered the Diner Burger, and my friend ordered the Fish Tacos. The Fish Tacos and Salad tasted delicious according to my friends, however my burger had problems. First, it did not come with the mayonnaise that was listed on the burgers ingredients so it was super dry. On top of that I asked for pickles when I ordered which they did not bring with my burger, then I asked again when they brought the food and ended up no getting the pickles I asked for with no acknowledgement from the server or the food runner who I also asked. They also brought rice for my friends Salad when she asked for none since it costed extra. Our waiter seemed to disappear after she delivered our food, and every time she walked past us tried not to make eye contact. I had to stare her down to get a refill on my water as well as the check. Nestled on the crazy Columbia & 18th chaos of Adams Morgan is the low key, plodding and prodigious The Diner. Not a lot of brunch choices in the area. I like to hit the IHOP in Columbia Heights. Only problem is that the IHOP does not have a single seating bar. Understandable, but I need a single seating bar so I can swivel on a stool to enhance the elbow action as I drive my fork into my pancakes. The Diner has this. I usually think of a diner as serving a huge menu full of assorted items, but The Diner is not like this. Their menu is comparatively small. They have the popular favorites (eggs), a few signature dishes, and that about does it. But, this allows them to get quick decisions from their patrons, and quick turnaround in the kitchen. And, if you wanted a massive selection, there are a dozen other joints on this strip. People who go to The Diner know what they want. I had the buttermilk pancakes stuffed with candied pecans. Hot, tasty, sizable (photo). Also had fresh squeezed orange juice, thankfully not loaded with gritty pulp, nevertheless it was fresh. Delightful, simple breakfast. The Diner is noisy, but not loud. Gal sat next to me while her boyfriend huddled over my shoulder so he could take my seat when I left. Not appropriate diner behavior. Chillax and wait your turn. My sis recently moved down the street and was so excited to eat here, we went bar hopping and ended up here, nicely decorated! Ambience was diverse and upbeat, there was music, it was modern, servers were friendly. We sat at the stools so we would Be able to sit down faster then waiting for a table, we ordered pasta and turkey with mashed potatoes, portions were plentiful but honestly it reminded me of hospital food, not seasoned well and it almost tasted premise/frozen ! We walked in here on a Sunday morning. It was busy but nothing major. We weren't greeted for awhile, there was another couple in front of us and I asked if they were in line for an online order or Just waiting for a table... they said they were waiting for anyone to realize they were there. So, already we could tell the front of the house could use some help. Eventually we were sat, they use a QR code for the menu which was quick and painless to browse. We ordered food and drinks at once after waiting about 15 minutes for someone to come by. It really didn't seem that busy but it looked like they were totally unprepared for a Sunday steady crowd. Everyone was super polite and once our drinks came we didn't mind a little wait. Our food was SO GOOD. It was piping hot and delish. So with the recommendation of my cousin, who lives in the area, we stopped by The Diner for brunch before heading back to NYC on a recent Sunday. At noon I was sure the place was going to be packed... and it was! The hostess had told us it would be about a 10 minute wait (which is not bad...) but then I spotted two seats at the counter and was told that those are first-come-first-serve (no wait!) so snatched those seats. Sitting at the counter allowed us a front row seat to the machine that is The Diner. The entire time we were there we didn't see a single staffer not doing something - whether it was filling water pitchers, prepping little cups of butter for pancakes or checking plates before sending them with a runner - this place is go go go. Same thing w/ our server - she was hard to catch as she was taking orders of all 20 people sitting at the counter. But when we did get her attention she came quickly and was just the sweetest. Now - lets talk food! Specifically - the Chocolate Chip Pancakes. Mmm mmm mmm. 3 large fluffy pancakes served w/ whipped butter and all the maple syrup you can use. Nice amount of chocolate chips both inside the pancakes as well as sprinkled up top too. I suggest adding some bacon to the dish - b/c breakfast is always better with bacon. I asked for a side ($3) of crispy bacon and actually got 3 super crispy and delicious slices of bacon. I like a restaurant who knows what crispy bacon is. Hubs got the Western Omelet and between bites commented that the whole dish was great. A week later and he's still talking about the home fries. Mmmm home fries. This is a cute and very busy place. It's very inviting with the open windows out front and the delicious smells of the food as you pass by. Its 2pm and still very busy. They serve breakfast and lunch and have many options for you to find something you like. They also serve alcohol which is great because brunch without booze is just a late breakfast. They were able to seat us right away being only two people, but we could see there was a wait for tables larger than that. We were seated, greeted and got water very quickly. They were busy but our server still took his time to help us with questions about the menu instead of rushing us along. We got the Jerk Salmon Salad and my husband got the Patty Melt with tater tots. Our meal was brought to the table in an appropriate amount of time and looked and tasted ok! My salad was a bit over dressed and pretty much soggy and my husbands patty melt wasn't a true patty melt since the burger patty was too thick and round. Usually, chefs make them thinner and equal to the size of the bread it is on. It was also not cooked to the correct temperature. The vibe of this place is young, trendy and hip. The staff is professional and fun and are always communicating with each other to give you the best experience possible. This is simply the best breakfast in the Adams Morgan neighborhood and possibly Washington, DC. Frankly, I don't even know why someone would go elsewhere. This place stays busy for a reason. They serve the quintessential American breakfast, an audacious collection of foods rarely eaten at other times of the day. There are outdoor tables available. Inside there are tables, booths and counter seats to accommodate solo diners, couples and large parties. Volume is rather high and the space features no hallmarks of thoughtful interior design. But don't let that stop you. The food and coffee are the stars of this show! Our party of three was seated immediately. We had a friendly and capable server. I had the best grits I've ever tasted in a restaurant. This creamy concoction is closer to Cream of Wheat but I just loved it. This is an okay place. I love diners! What's not to love? I was waited on by a friendly young man. He got me my morning cup of Joe, nothing extraordinary. The orange juice was tasty but $3.95 for a small (looked like a kids size). I ordered the Diner Royale. Lord it was a lot of food, enough for two. I couldn't finish it all. Hungry after going out?!?! THIS IS IT. I left a bar, and all I wanted was pancakes...went on yelp, then BOOM, The diner! Before I go into detail about this place, let me just say this...If you're looking for something fancy and quiet, Don't come here. If you want some great pancakes at 3am, COME HERE. First, we had to wait in line to get seated on a Saturday at 2:30am, this place gets packed! It was about 3 of us, so the wait was only about 15 minutes. The place is big, but fills up extremely quickly. The music is loud, they were playing hip hop music, which we enjoyed. The only issue I had with this place was the dirty coffee cups :( As soon as we got sat, we all ordered some warm tea (It was cold outside). The server bring us cups, and my friend's cup had coffee stains all in the cup. It was bad :( The server apologizes, and brings another cup, but guess what? That cup also had stains at the top of the cup. Once he noticed it, he felt extremely bad, told the manager and apologized. The third cup was clean (Amen!). Now for the food, I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes. These things are huge and amazing. Exactly what I needed at 3 am. I will come back for these pancakes and can't wait. I also ordered the grits, which I wasn't that pleased with, but the pancakes made up for it. My friends ordered the chicken biscuit and the bread pudding french toast. They both loved their meals. I really like the chicken biscuit. Another great thing about this place, was how inexpensive it was. We got full off of 5-10 bucks, you can't beat that. I love the convenience of the Diner... one of the few places I knew would be open on Easter Sunday! Even more convenient considering I only came with my s/o; they have a lot of two-seat tables. The Diner has a nice outdoor seating area, a TV inside, and enough space for each table. The atmosphere is very homey and family-friendly, and the service is sweet to match. My waitress was pleasant and extremely competent! She knew the menu very well and though she didn't come by much, she made sure to stop by to make sure everything was going well and also whenever our water was low. As for the comfort food, I recommend getting anything with the home fries... aka something on the breakfast menu! I got the steak and eggs, while my boyfriend got the royale. The wheat and sourdough breads were both great. The steak was passable, but they gave me ketchup and A1, so I made do. Plus, it was pretty cheap for 8 ounces, so I knew what I was getting into. There's no place like home...must eat 1st. After everyone got their bearings together & a quick Uber ride, we ended up here for post partying breaking of the bread. I am fanatic for diner food, especially when they offer a great selection of vegetarian/vegan options. It looked very crowed pulling up & walking in...yahoo, no wait & there was a big enough table to accommodate the 7 of us. After everyone ordered OJ & a few diet cokes (what the heck, diet cokes?!) Any who, after the French Toast, Pancakes, Omelets, Chicken Sausage (nice to see on the menu) was placed, & I settled for the Black Bean Patty Burger with a Vegan Bun & some Tater Tots. OMGosh, the food didn't take long at all & we all dived in the diner way...no go backs, that's always a good sign. The food was very good, & no one had any complaints. I even ordered a Grapefruit Juice for my dessert & it was extremely fresh & sweet. While everyone else was struggling to stay awake & consuming the late night nosh, I was enjoying people watching, making a mental note to come back for the patio seating when the weather is warmer & to try more yummy options from the menu. If you want a diner, then this is the place. My parents love diners so we went here, though I personally didn't care for it much (I'm not a big breakfast food person). The tater tots were good, but the pancakes were meh. I don't recommend the Alfredo, but the burgers and basic breakfasts looked good. They were straight up steamed, which is fine, but charging $4 for a few pieces of steamed green beans isn't really worth it. My boyfriend's fried chicken was really dry to me. The batter was seasoned well and tasty on its own, but the chicken ended up being a bit boring after a few bites. I really liked the French toast, however. And who doesn't like the bacon syrup? Another complaint was the service. Perhaps America's most classic culinary institution it has always proven interesting to see what each major city considers to be the quintessential "Diner" and although the Nation's Capital has several such places to choose from few seem to embody the traditional model as much as Adams Morgan's "The Diner" where breakfast for three was ordered on Wednesday morning. Owned by the group behind Tryst and several other local establishments, the spacious 24/7 Restaurant located at 2453 18th Street Northwest decorated with mirrors and a diversity mural flanking the lengthy Bar where many patrons choose to sit and kibitz with waitresses and line cooks, guests visiting The Diner early will find ample metered parking just outside the space and despite the fact that reservations are not offered there will likely be no difficulty finding a seat save for the busiest times, though receiving service that qualifies as 'adequate' may prove to be a challenge. Lengthy and just a bit grimy, a vagrant outside shouting obscenities as the sky while intermittently begging for change just another part of the experience, it was shortly after seating and hearing about seasonal specials that beverages were ordered, the Coffee a pretty basic brew that essentially required begging for refills while the "Hot Chocolate" clearly came from a powdered mix as flecks were seen circulating the glass overflowing with Whipped Topping. Priced appropriately to ingredient quality and format, most plates less than $10 despite big portion sizes with condiments including artificial Maple Syrup and packages of Smucker's HFCS "jelly," it was after some debate about a makeshift Croque Monsieur or Chicken and Waffles that the decision was made to instead invest in three styles of "French Toast," two largely the same with outsourced Challah Bread griddled Golden and one served "Monte Cristo"-style around Ham, Swiss, Turkey and Cheddar, the fact that it wasn't deep fried not as much an issue as the fact that it was served luke-warm with Cheese only partially melted and nothing worth topping or dipping it in. Battling a busted parking meter on this particular day, the focus on not getting a ticket more than once requiring a trip to the door to check on the car, it was thankfully with The Diner's Bread Pudding French Toast that the kitchen at least managed to serve a dish that required more effort than assemblage and a quick trip to the stove, the Bread soaked overnight in Lemon Cream thankfully not requiring anything more than Berries and a dash of Powdered Sugar to be good while the housemade Apple Pie was also decent, though ordered a la mode it would have benefitted from a better brand of Ice Cream. read more

Rehema Understands the Need for Bacon On March 18, 2019 my husband and I stopped at The Diner before making the long flight back to California. We were Day 14 into the Whole 30 . Rehema made us laugh as she shielded is from the orders of French toast and muffins. She said she admired us. She brought us a huge amount of sliced lemons, poached eggs and spinach. Then we had a heartfelt talk about bacon. She understood why bacon saved our restricted diet. She served us the best crisp bacon. In fact we took bacon to go for our plane ride back West. Was back in town for an annual conference, stayed at the Washington Hilton, and was looking for a modest, comfortable restaurant versus the crowded places up and down Connecticut Ave. I had such great experiences that my daughter and I returned at least four times for breakfast and an early dinner. Their food is basic but solid, which matches the place's ambiance. If I lived close by, I'm sure I'd frequent this place a couple of times per week... even just to sit and have a cup of coffee with a friend or have a piece of their delicious apple pie while viewing the eclectic and diverse residents passing by the window. Love this place and wish the "basic diner" concept was more prevalent in the United States as it used to be. Great staff -- so sweet and fun! read more

I love this place. They have a wide selection of typical diner breakfast food and are open 24/7. Large eating space but crowded since it is so popular. I love diner food so I may be biased. I came here with friends and between us we shared waffles, pancakes, various incarnations of eggs, pastry, toast, etc. All of it was good. They do have non-breakfast food and vegetarian options also, however I always stick with the breakfast selections. The staff is friendly, a good quality given that they end up serving the post club/bar crowd in Adams Morgan. They do have staff watching the door so if you are falling down drunk or obnoxious you aren't going to get in. I love how the food is good quality especially since they could get away with serving crap to the drunks after bar closing time if they wanted to. Another positive sign is that the DC cops seem to eat there frequently. This place has also saved me a few times when I've been traveling through DC before moving here. I first started going to The Diner in college (~10 years ago). My partner and I recently returned and I still love this place (admittedly, in part for sentimental reasons). The food is decent. It's not the best you've ever had but is tasty enough for you to return. We especially love the brownie a la mode that we get at the end of every meal. The restaurant is open 24/7 and so that's definitely another selling point, especially when you've been out drinking and want to put something on your stomach before heading in for the night. Went for breakfast at the Diner on Saturday with my partner and we were seated right away which was nice. If we got here 30 minutes later, we would've had to wait to be seated but at 9:00am, there was no line, no wait. The woman who seated us could've been a bit more friendly but our waiter made up for her lack of cheer. I ordered the Migas breakfast and my partner ordered the Diner Hash. Both were good, but my egg scramble in the Migas was not very warm so threw my off and made me not want to eat it all. Still, it was filling, so much though that I left more than half on my plate. My partner enjoyed her Diner Hash. I was a bit bummed that I couldn't order an Irish coffee until after 10am so settled for tap water. Overall, not a bad meal for $25. read more

Our server was on the spot with great recommendations. The food was outstanding. The prices were incredibly reasonable. This place rocks! read more
