I wanted a good breakfast at a place that wasn't going to try to be good rather than just being good. The Diner exceeded my expectations. Great service and great food. Simple and easy. Good coffee.

The Diner in Adams Morgan is exactly what a neighborhood diner should be - consistently great food, served fast, by genuinely friendly people. The Diner is a humble local spot. The menu is smaller than your typical diner, but it hits all the highlights with some fun twist. With amazing prices and the kind of menu that covers all the classics. The ingredients are simple, but that's the beauty of it, fresh, satisfying, and reliably good every single time. You may wait a little for weekend brunch, but it's worthwhile. Service is quick without feeling rushed, and the staff makes you feel like a regular even if it's your first visit. Whether you're grabbing a casual breakfast, a late-night bite (open 24 hours), or just craving something comforting and familiar, this place delivers. In a city that's constantly chasing the next trend, The Diner stays true to what works--and does it really well. A true neighborhood gem.

Way to go, The Diner staff! Things went much better with the service, the staff person I'd had issues with before was much more attentive and helpful. And they really made an effort to make my milkshake the right way and special. (I mean, they're not cheap, esp the boozy ones - about the price of some entrees, so their should be some effort and no scrimping on filling up the glass or giving any leftovers from the blender ;-) Also, the dining area wasn't insanely loud with music the last 2-3 times I was here.

Overall this was a great breakfast spot. We sat outside and enjoyed some fresh air which was extra nice because service is slow. I mean that about everything coffee, water, your silverware m, getting a menu that they didn't seat you with, the check and of course your food all come slowly. Food is solid. It's very basic but sometimes basic done well is what you need. I will say the home fries made not home fries as I know them. These were just unseasoned chopped potato wedges which is not home fries. Pancakes were just basic buttermilk cakes but again basic done well is good. My husband had the rancheros and they were on a tostada which he didn't love but it tasted fine.

My coworkers and I ordered breakfast from here one day. I had the Ponderosa Stomp Omelette with grits and a cheddar-jalapeno biscuit. This place offered great value, as I got two meals out of what I ordered. The cheddar-jalapeno biscuit was an unexpected favorite. I had a little trouble with the online ordering system, but I called the restaurant, and they were able to fix the glitch.

My wife and I love diners and diner breakfasts are some of the best that you can get. We stopped here while in town for a conference in May and we really enjoyed our meal. Our omelets were very tasty and filling and they had very good breakfast potatoes, rye toast, and a side of fruit. Service was pretty good and it's a solid choice for breakfast. We'd definitely come back again the next time we're in town.

Must say I was extremely disappointed returning back here after quite some years ago when Adams Morgan used to be the place to be. After being seated for 10 minutes we had to wave down a server just to get water and order drinks. We then waited an additional 10-15 to put in food orders. I went to the bathroom and as I used the urinal, I looked up and saw black mold on the ceiling. The food took an additional 40 mins to come out to us. My food was actually cold when it came out, the garlic butter on my steak wasn't even melting. Unwrapped my silverware and it was dirty. The manager/owner on staff had a nasty attitude and was very dismissive. As excited as I was to return there, they lost their flair!

So, I didn't expect much when I walked in at 2:30 am, and the sign at the entrance read "Seat yourself." I was pleasantly surprised. My waitress (Candice) was PHENOMENAL!!! Personable, attentive, and has such a wonderfully pleasant disposition. After playing "musical chairs" for a minute (I was freezing), I settled on table "30" (I was solo). She took my order without issue. Make sure you're SPECIFIC with what you want on your burger. I was so focused on ensuring the temperature was understood, that I missed when she repeated my order back, that I didn't share which cheese I wanted. I must have mistakenly ordered a "burger," and not a "cheese burger." None the less, the temperature was perfect, and the food delicious. This will definitely be my "go to" after hours.

Took a seat on the patio on a Sunday morning. Was a great spot for the puppy to people watch and was a decent spot for breakfast. It was good, classic fare at decent prices with good service. I wouldn't say I'm dying to go back, but it hit all the right notes on the search for some good breakfast food. Had eggs Benedict which was decent in flavor and portion and my husband had the hash brown bowl. Both were good, but we weren't blown away. The corned beef hash was sorely missing some corned beef, but that was the only real low spot. Would be back if we're strolling in the neighborhood and want a brunchy bite, but probably wouldn't make it a destination.

Disappointing takeout. We couldn't even eat it. Good milkshake but the rest was terrible diner food. We ate PB and j instead.

Thankfully we ended up at the Unconventional Diner and it was perfect for satisfying everyone in the group!! We were all able to get tasty drinks- from n/a Hibiscus Citrus lemonade, white wine, a cinnamon toast old fashioned (what? A cereal inspired old fashioned, yes please and it was fantastic!), and a Bourbon basil smash. Then the crew settled on some food-the waiter was patient with the questions and contemplation from the table (thank you!). We started with the SKILLET CORNBREAD with Habanero Honey Butter | Sea Salt (v) And that was melt in your mouth cornbread. Damn. Real cornbread seems hard to come by any more and this is the real deal. And the honey butter and flake sea salt-can't go wrong. I'm a spice weeny-for reals-and this was incredible. It's a MUST get. Across the table we had two of the double cheese burgers (I warned, we have a lack of adventurous eaters) -and they both said the burgers were the best they've had. I had the Philly French double dip, with horseradish cream and caramelized onions-so fantastic-the roast beef was melt in your mouth and the broth was the perfect saltiness. Our fourth got the fried chicken sandwich and really loved the dill pickle slaw that came with it, and the chicken was not over cooked and not raw-perfect! We all had fries with our meals, the thinner kind with light seasoning and none of us could stop eating them, even when we were clearly full, the fries just kept disappearing.

It was whiter than the iced chai latte with whole milk that my husband had gotten. I had to send it back. What i did not anticipate was a half raw egg with the yolk swimming in a sea of translucent completely uncooked "whites". It was like a golden disc encased in a snot rocket. Ok, maybe that's their "runny". Slide it off the toast and press on - snail trail of mucus be damned. The avocado spread was great - bright, citrusy, and well seasoned. The "hot sauce" was likely from a bottle and could have been left off. The radishes would have benefitted from being tossed in lemon, salt and pepper. The image of the "runny" egg was too much so I ate half the toast serving and meandered to the fries. Not bad, crispy , hot, and...wait...sweet...something is off, I can't put my finger on it but at least it's not a raw egg. I keep eating. The standout of the morning was the breakfast side potatoes--crispy, seasoned perfectly, and easily something I'd come back for. The breadbasket came with three pastries, which felt a bit smaller than expected, but the almond croissant more than made up for it. On the heartier side, the chicken and waffles were extremely filling thanks to the dense waffles, so definitely a dish to tackle with an appetite. One of the biggest surprises was the brunch salad with salmon, which ended up being one of the best salads I've had in a long time--fresh, balanced, and satisfying. The breakfast sandwich was another highlight: so good that it's now the new standard I'll compare all other breakfast sandwiches to. The smoked salmon bagel was also a fun experience, served deconstructed so you can build each bite exactly how you like it. Not everything was a hit--the French toast wasn't my favorite--but the overall meal was strong enough that it barely detracted from the experience. Brunch offers a few additions beyond the regular breakfast menu, but overall it's very similar to their standard breakfast, just with a couple of extra options. It tends to get full on the weekends to make a reservation. Bottom line: Penbrook is a beautiful hotel restaurant that punches above its weight--excellent service, memorable dishes, and several items worth returning for.
