I went to this establishment on my lunch break at 03:00 in the morning because it was one of the few places open that late. Upon arriving when I walked in it did not look very busy I so I seated myself at the bar with what appeared to be no server in sight. None the less I wait about another 10 mins and I see to males walk over to two tables and service them so I have recognized they were the two males who stared at me when I walked in but didnt say anything so I didnt know they were employees. A couple minutes later a caucasian couple walk in and sit at the bar, one of the gentleman immediately greeted them with menu's and ready to service them, meanwhile literally nobody said a word to me. This gave me the impression that this establishment does not want my patron nor the patronage of people who look like me a person of color. I will be sharing my experience at Uncle Tom's diner with everyone I come in contact with so they dont have to experience the horrendous display of racism in the of 2025 or ever. read more

Wanted to like this place so badly. I am honestly so surprised at all the awesome reviews because our experience was anything but amazing. Our waitress was sweet, but was definitely inebriated, slurring her words, could barely keep her eyes open. She even fell onto the table while handing me my drink. Speaking of drinks, my husband never got his. He had to ask a food runner for it approximately 30 mins after he ordered. We had the kids with us and asked the waitress if she could put their pancake orders in first so they could get their food faster than ours. Well the pancakes were also forgotten. Mind you, we were the only patrons in the restaurant. Several homeless people did come through and use the very dirty bathrooms. My daughter ordered Alfredo and was sick to her stomach on the way home. That was the nail in the coffin for me. Hopefully this isn't a typical experience. read more

But they have a bunch of self absorbed, lazy, very unprofessional (acting as well as looking) staff that truly don't give a crap about their clientele. Unless,of course it's personal friends, otherwise you will sit there all day waiting for someone to rudely serve you overpriced sub par food. *shocked at managers behavior toward customer and employees* I have gone to the diner all week (3x) for lunch. The turkey club is good. Today I decided to order the cob salad but with no mushrooms or blue cheese. Im attending a conference so I had an hour and 15 minute lunch, with a 15 min walk. At the 35 min mark waiting for the salad I asked the waitress if I could pay and get a box as I would need to leave once my food comes out. Finally another waiter brings the salad over but it had both mushrooms and blue cheese on it. So I mention oh I ordered without that, he immediately says oh it must be the other salad up there. I could've picked those items off had I knew what was coming. The waiter grabs the other salad waiting, the manager, Maurice then starts yelling at him loudly that it wasn't my salad (the new one he was bringing to me) the waiter is like well she said she didn't order mushroom and blue cheese so the manager LOOKS at me and loudly yells that's not her salad like 2-3x while waving his arms around so I'm looking like WTFFFF I don't know which is mine but I'm just saying what I did order. so the new salad the waiter gives me only has chicken and avocado on it, no bacon onion crouton etc. So as soon as he puts it down I was like, I think he's right this isn't the Cobb salad I ordered either. So the waiter immediately takes it over to the manager and the manager starts yelling I told you so, I told you so and takes this new salad and aggressively throws it in the trash. It's now time I have to leave but I've already paid for my salad (I know big mistake but I've been here all week for lunch and haven't had this issue also not sure if I've seen this particular manager working either).. the manager keeps yelling at the staff to the point the waitress was clearly uncomfortable and told him to stop yelling. The waitress is like I'm sorry I can refund you. So I said ok because I have to go. Then she goes to the manager (I presume to get permission) and he yells NO ITS COMING (a new salad) So I wait. Waitress brings me another Salad that just came up and it was the chicken and avocado only salad again. I really have to go at this point and I'm like look I'm sorry but it doesn't have bacon tomato etc. I paid $24.06 for a cob salad can I just get a refund. The waitress walks away and is now avoiding me. When I got her back she's like all I can do is to "personally" refund you. I was just shocked. The manager and several waiters kept looking over but purposefully avoiding me. It's simple, there was a mistake in the kitchen then confusion with waiters. It didn't require be yelled at, him yelling at the waitress, and blatantly refusing to refund me or correctly fix it. $24 for a salad is a lot and I just wanted what I ordered or my money back. Been to this place many times after a long night out of drinking and partying, so it was interesting coming here during the early evening hours and seeing what it looks like while it's still bright out! Definitely wasn't packed and there was no wait. There were a few patrons sitting outside enjoying the nice weather but we chose to sit inside for our group of five. Even during the late night busy times, I never had any issues with service here. Came by recently after leaving a Yelp event nearby and some fellow yelpers had never been to this place so I was happy to suggest it to them. Breakfast anytime but none of us got breakfast food. You capitalize on being the only early sit-down breakfast option available in AdMo, except for your sister restaurant Tryst, also known for providing service so slow I stopped coming in a while ago. The 2 stars are for the wait staff, because they work very hard and provide a smile to every patron; I wish I could rate them separately as they alone deserve all credit for anything positive here. Management deserves 0 stars, for understaffing the restaurant since before quarantine times; overworking your staff as a standard business practice is, well, wrong, and also results in bad costumer service, regardless of your staff's valiant efforts. UPDATE: I'd never had a bland sausage before, until today. Everything on my plate was bland (potatoes, chicken sausage, eggs), the food was already cold when served, and it took so long to get condiments, that the food became cold to the touch and inedible. I stumbled upon The Diner during Howard's Homecoming in 2011. Fast forward to 2023, and I'm still enjoying what they have to offer! They are in the best part of Ad Mo, like prime location!! You can bar hop and enjoy their breakfast options or their entrees, no matter what time you arrive. The service is always inviting, I prefer sitting at the counter to really experience that authentic "diner" feel. The booths are comfy, if you're with 3-4 people, again super traditional seating. The meatloaf melts in your mouth, it feels just like grandma would make, accompanied by the creamiest and chunkiest mashed potatoes ever! The fried chicken is crunchy, crispy and so well seasoned! I enjoyed the diner punch, it's not too sweet and offers a kick. The hope brown sugar bourbon tastes like the kind of cocktail you'd find on vacation, semi sweet and crisp. Were were fortunate the host was able to get us a clean outdoor table during Porch Fest 2022 in Adam's Morgan. Prime seating for people watching on a warm enough fall day. We were close enough to enjoy the outdoor music from Madams Organ while being able to conduct a range of conversations. This on a day when people stood in line at less entertaining spots along the strip. But what this review is really about were the delicious, crispy, filling fish tacos. First time I ever had three fish tacos and felt like I had a good meal. And I've had them San Diego to DC. This is my new favorite and a new reason to drive from VA to DC. I may prefer the best house blend coffee in DC at the owner's original place nearby, (Tryst), but I know to come to the Diner to eat! Will take and post pictures next time before devouring more of these delicious tacos. Oh, and thanks to the host who was knowledgeable about the history of Tryst, the Diner, and the other cafes owned by Constantine. Revisited the Diner 3 years after coming for the first time. It wasn't as good as I remembered, though I suspect the fact that it was late on a Friday night had something to do with the quality suffering. I had a grilled cheese with bacon added and French fries on the side. It was probably about as good a grilled cheese as I could make at home -- not terrible, something to eat, but definitely not restaurant quality. The bacon wasn't crispy enough and the bread was just super underwhelming. Generic American cheese. The fries tasted like they had been frozen, but they're fries, so they weren't totally awful. I mainly came here so I could get a boozy milkshake. My oreo milkshake last time stuck in my mind as one of the best milkshakes I'd ever had. Unfortunately, I didn't dig my milkshake this time. I got the Muddy Waters. It had a really lovely flavor, but the alcohol wasn't very strong. My main problem, though, was the coffee grounds -- almost every sip had some gritty grounds in it. I love the coffee flavor, but I wasn't expecting that to be such a huge problem. I never got feedback from my boyfriend about the fish and chips, but my friend always gets the Veggie Reuben, which he gives high marks. I want to say my shake was called "the Appalachian", it was a vanilla based shake mixed with bourbon, maple syrup and bacon bits sprinkled at the top and bottom of the glass. That damn shake was delicious and worth every calorie consumed. The interior had that classic diner feel, and the menu had a decent array of diner classics. The Diner is a must go if you're in the Washington D.C. The restaurant is very busy and you may have to wait to be seated between 15-30min, so be prepared to wait for a bit. They have a large number of outdoor and indoor seating options. The service was pretty good and the server Willy was very personable and provided great food recommendations. Willy suggested the Hibiscus Margarita and my husband and I were pleasantly surprised, it was delicious. The food is scrumptious and leaves you feeling full but not stuffed. The French toast, grits and omelet were all memorable. One suggestion is to request less jalapeños, the omelet with the jalapeños is on the spicy side. Great Service there is direct and efficient. She got our complex order with modifications correct on the 1st try! Love it. She was sharp! The neighborhood is excellent.
