So I was in the area for an appointment at Lashybaby and arrived earlier than expected. So to kill time my husband (who drove me) and I decided to grab some grub at this small and quaint restaurant. Now, since we have 4 kids, and 2 under 2, we would probably have skipped the restaurant had we had our kids with us since its really small and a tight fit, but since we were sans kids we thought, why not try this place out. We were warmly greeted upon entering, asked if we wanted a table or to sit at the counter, and again sans kids we sat at the counter. I had the eggs Benedict and the French toast. Both were deliciously flavorful and cooked to perfection. They came out in a reasonable amount of time and the coffee cup was never not filled ;) overall a wonderful breakfast spot. read more

One of my go-to diners. The great spot for a casual, standard breakfast: scrambles, pancakes, French toast, two egg breakfasts with potatoes and toast, coffee, OJ, etc. Much better food quality than a Denny's or IHOP, but with standard accoutrements like freezer jam, cream and sugar on the table, and normal condiments. A relief in Seattle where everyone else is forcing us to choke down some disgusting version of all-natural or house-made ketchup. If you are a big diner breakfast fan like me, you might care to know this place doesn't offer shredded hash browns. A bummer, but the potatoes are good so I don't mind too much. read more

I'm kind of bummed to leave a 2 star review on a breakfast place. Who doesn't love breakfast? The bottom line here is that if you are looking for good food, The Dish can provide that. If you are looking to not be treated like $hit... Ehhh, the food is good. We came in with a group of 4 not too early on a Tuesday. I was transfixed by the wall of hot sauces and we waited at the bar for our fourth to show up. No one offered us coffee or anything. When we were seated to the far left side against a sliding door and their patio, we had a good chance to peruse the menu and did receive coffee and water. Orders were taken and no one messed up my requests (no cream cheese on the My Favorite) and you can order these as omelettes or scrambles, which was great. I got to try the English muffin AND scone, since my friend is gluten-free. Scone is awesome, but way more like coffee cake. My eggs were good, too, and I love that they have Aardvark sauce on every table. Arguably the best of the hot sauces. The service is dismal. A waitress (not ours) came by "I left the honey here. Can I get that?" and then gave us attitude like we had stolen this item and caused her great strife as a result. Our own waitress was not any better. Grumpy and flat out rude. I asked for more napkins and she made NO RESPONSE to the point where I was like, "oh wow, guess she didn't hear me cause it is a little noisy in here" but then was given napkins. I guess acknowledgement of my request was too much for her busy schedule? It wasn't an isolated incident and all of us were left with a sour taste about the establishment in general. Not sure why people would wait in line for this place, honestly. Every aspect of it was mediocre. The wait admittedly wasn't took long, but it was windy out. There is a small table out front with coffee, but no one bothered to explain this to us, and there were no cups except for two dirty, used ones next to the thermos. After we got in, we were seated a little to the back, which was nice as it was slightly less noisy. But I don't mind a lot of noise in a breakfast place/diner. The decor on the walls, simple water glasses and laminated menus warmed my heart and reminded me of some of the diners I miss on the East Coast. Our waitress started fine... she came promptly to take our order, and food came quickly, but then we never saw her again. We had to flag someone down for coffee refills, and no one bothered to check in on us. Also had to wave someone down for the check/to-go boxes. One caveat, I was so sad to see on Yelp that there's a cool selection of hot sauce! I had no idea and would have totally taken advantage of them, but wasn't informed :( The food: I ordered the breakfast burrito and my date got the pigs in the garden. She said "I can't remember the last time I had to salt my food at a restaurant." It was so, so bland. The biscuit she got was terrible. Note, they are not Southern style, fluffy biscuits, but very flat and floury. Potatoes were good. My burrito was only flavorful from the mound of salsa and sour cream on top. The black beans were flavorless. One bright side I could see: I bet this place is incredibly reliable. It looks like it hasn't changed ever. I can see why this spot is favored with the locals. Springy, fluffy blueberry pancakes, the delicious 'slacker', scone, and wall of hot sauces make The Dish a cozy, satisfying breakfast haven! Not to mention, everything is served by the warmest, friendliest waitstaff. You can't help but feel at home. Not my typical choice, but the blueberry pancakes were well worth the deviation. They are super light and fluffy, but have a nice springy texture that I can't quite describe. The blueberries are huge and whole in the pancakes :) The Slacker has everything you'd want in a breakfast - eggs, potatoes, hot sauce! If the heat isn't enough for you, pick out more sauce from the wall behind the counter! It comes with choice of toast or scone, and I recommend the scone. Here is my simple formula for enjoying a meal at the Dish, developed as an occasional patron over the last two decades: 1) Don't go on the weekends. The place is overrun, sometimes dirty, and the staff is over-wrought. You won't get their best, and will likely be frustrated at the wait. At these times, I'm happy that The Leary Traveller next door does a good brunch, too (weekends only; and keep in mind: they're 21+). 2) Peek in the windows and count the number of small children you see. In that close, loud environment, screaming infants and rampant toddlers can ruin the peace of the most stoic diner. If you see more than three, go to plan B for sure. 3) They do certain things very well here, others not so much. Anything with potatoes is a good bet, like hash and the SOB Spuds.as is their famous Benedict. Also, anything with Southwestern or Mexican flavors is generally flavorful and generous- their Huevos Verdes is a personal favorite and, with avocado, very diet-friendly. The Burrito is a go-to for many. Beware of the soups (very hit-and-miss), sausages (almost always have bits of bone) and turkey dishes (tend to be dry). Service on the weekdays is seamlessly good, in my experience. My coffee cup is always full. :) If you hit them at the right time, the Dish offers solid value and friendly service. Recommended for weekday brunch/lunch. read more

I always get the eggs Benedict and today when I went, unfortunately, there was 1/3 the amount of potatoes with it as normal. Sad and weird considering how cheap potatoes are in general. read more

I love this place! The menu has something for everyone. It's only breakfast and lunch, what do you expect for a diner? (On a sunday afternoon) The wait to be seated is long due to very limited seating. You are required to be on a first come first serve waiting list. Coffee is offered free while waiting, awesome perk. (The coffee was fresh, hot and tasteful.) The diner itself is tiny and crowded and the location is a bit unattractive- industrial back alley... Not too bad, though. The waitstaff are super busy as they Keep up with constant orders. You can tell they are super pressured With the high pace Atmosphere. Even so, They do a good job refilling coffee and checking up on tables. I selected a sandwich From the menu for lunch. This sucker was so good that it required no additional seasoning- Even with a wall full of various *yummy* hot sauces, I was not tempted to taint its Flavor complex. That barely ever happens! Well done, Dish. Another plus was the portion to cost ratio. Very fair. Moderate price. Huge enough portion to fill my 3 stomachs. ;) If you enjoy good food and don't mind a crowded high pace atmosphere and don't need to be babysat by a waitress the entire visit, try this place out. It might seem like a tiny hipstery dive cafe walking through the front door. Well, The Dish is a tiny hipstery dive cafe. But don't let that scare you off. Great eats and equally good coffee are to be had here. Even late morning on a weekday The Dish was filled so I imagine there is fearsome wait for a table on weekends. JP had Eggs Benedict with potatoes. The eggs rested atop an Italian sausage patty and were cooked spot on (the eggs were neither runny nor hard). The Italian sausage was nicely seasoned - vibrant but not overwhelming. The potatoes were diced roasted reds with a bit of onion, and they were perfect. I almost went with healthy oatmeal, but realizing it was Fat Tuesday, said the heck with it, and ordered blueberry pancakes with a side of bacon. Dish doesn't stint with the blueberries and the berries were fat and juicy. Very good pancakes. The bacon was thick cut and tasty. Service was brisk and businesslike, but I'm sure that is necessary for keeping the show on the road in a busy restaurant. We will be back. read more

A cute American breakfast/ brunch place.... I am sorry but this is the only good thing I can say about this place. I was expecting a little more since this place received 4 stars. The reasons this place received 2 stars from me because its overpriced for what you are getting. Most other breakfast places will give you a lot more food for the value. Also, The Dish didn't execute well on many items... my potatoes were brunt and toasts were dry. I am not a big fan of their scone as well... the texture is jacked up... it has the texture of a corn bread rather than a traditional scone. The staff is nice and I wish them well. Will I come back to this place? Probably not because there are many wonderful breakfast places in the Fremont/ Ballard area. read more

The Dish is a homey diner-esque breakfast spot that really hits the spot. They've got all your favorite American breakfast offerings on the menu, from pancakes to chicken fried steak to corned beef hash. For having gone on a Sunday, I was shocked at not having to wait, since that seems to be the deal at every decent brunch place at that time of the week. We were seated promptly and service was quick all throughout! I had the corned beef hash and my breakfast buddy had the Denver omelette. Both were yummy, and I have to say that the variety of hot sauces available to sprinkle on my hash made me really happy. I've been a regular of this place for many many years and I always order an omelette and a side of gravy instead of toast and potatoes. Always, always I was charged the menu price of the omelette. Without a couple of exceptions, other places charge me likewise without me having to ask for it. When I ordered the usual today, I was informed that they have to charge me extra for the gravy at which point, I got up and went to Eggs & Us Cafe, behind Trader Joe's, about 3 minutes away - my first time there. Sure enough, they also charged me the menu price of the omelette. I would never rate a restaurant based on their pricing as we live in a free market economy and we have choices. The Dish could have prevented this negative feedback by charging me as usual but advising me of their new policy for the future. I was really happy with my experience at Eggs & Us. read more

Stopped in for breakfast this morning. They have a nice variety of items. I A big fan of good corned beef hash Sony husband asked if it was fresh made or canned. It's not 'canned' by any means but the meat and potatoes are more finely diced than I like. I really prefer bigger chunks so that you can taste each ingredient separately if you like. Corned beef had good flavor and the scone that came with it was large and tasty. The waitress serving us seemed to not be very happy at her job. She was efficient but never made eye contact or really made me feel welcome. She was friendlier to her coworker than she was to us or any of the customers that I saw. read more
