This restaurant was quite the find. Our server, Bob, was so attentive and knowledgeable of the menu, he couldn't be more accommodating. Jen, the owner/manager was busy oiling creaky doors so the customers would not be bothered but still had time to come by and have a chat with us at our table. The food was amazing!! I'm a Buffalo chicken snob and these were some of the best I ever had. They were made with a dry rub, then smoker and then a flash fried. so tasty!! After a day of leaf-peeping and hiking the Kaaterskill Falls trail, The Dutch Ale House was where I chose to whet my whistle. If, however, I actually lived in Saugerties, this would be my neighborhood pub, my watering hole, etc. I really liked the low-key, homey, feel and the food and drink. I had checked the beer menu online beforehand - pleased with the overall selection, disappointed that only 2 of their own drafts were available this month, even more disappointed that they were out of one, but again very pleased with the other. I had expressed interest in another local beer from New Paltz, but passed and stuck with a second round of their beer - they were nice enough to let me have a sample of the other beer anyway. We ordered fairly standard pub grub here. I went with their Moody Blue Burger. The fries felt industrial (a coating) but were otherwise crisp and tasty. The burger was definitely homemade, cooked to order, quite tasty with its toppings, and was - as I like to say when I praise a burger - messy good. We got in for an early dinner before the hostess/waitress came in, so even though we were at a table, the bartender waited on us. He was great, friendly, humorous, and attentive, and I'm sure our service by the waitress would have been equally good. I enjoyed dining here, and I'd definitely come back. I do have one comment, and I leave it as much for humor as critique - you have a few loose floor tiles in the men's room. This place was pretty "happenin" on a Monday night, which is why we walked in here. (In other words, it was the only non-diner in downtown Saugerties that had people dining inside.) The food was good, but definitely on the heavy side. My favorite were the Truffle, Garlic & Parmesan Wings. I could definitely see how these won an award. The meat was flavorful and moist. The Truffled Parmesan Frites were too greasy and soft for my liking. We also got a hanger steak sandwich and some other entree that I don't remember the name of. Both too heavy and rich for me. Always a solid choice when in Saugerties. You can't go wrong with any of the appetizers. The house made sausage plate and pickle jar are great to share. They carry many great local beers including a favorite from Sloop brewing, Juice Bomb. Prices are what you'd expect for a gastro-pub in the area. Dinner portions will not disappoint. I am hesitant to give 5 stars because the nights that there is live music can be a little loud in the dining room. Also, the pub table seating by the front door can get pretty chilly in winter. just tried to eat a $24 burger at the reinvented Dutch ale house. tried to order it medium rare but I was told they couldn't do that only medium so I asked for the burge with fries. what was placed in front of me was an overcooked burger with crispy bacon and dried out fries. it was craptastic. my advise is s if you're in saugerties and you want a burger try The Partition, or the pig, or Stella's or micky dees. it'd stopped going to this once good tavern when these clowns first took it over and, given the same situation they offered what they. called a smash burger that amounted to Mac Donald's size patties just as dry just as flavorless and as craptastc as their present offering. Not too shabby. I had..the steak sandwich with chili and the garlic wings. All were quite tasty. I like the extra crispy fries. Garlic wings are supposedly won some award and IMO my experience confirmed it. The chili was chili..i haven't had that many varieties of chili, but i did want more after i was finished, so that's probably a good sign. The steak sandwich was great..had a unique flavor from the garlic bread and ciabatta. I wasn't a big fan of the ciabatta, but it was unique. We came here wanting a casual atmosphere and just something different. It was one of those days where pizza just doesn't sound good and it was time to step outside our comfort zone. We started with the twice fried wings and French onion soup. Both were amazing. Then he ordered the prime rib, a $23 dollar meal. It was amazingly cooked although a little small for the price. The potatoes it came with were fresh and delicious. I ordered the ginger shrimp wontons. They were crisp and flavorful and beautifully presented. Very disappointing. It took the food forever to to arrive. When we asked the waitress about the delay, she mentioned that 20-40 minutes for 4 burgers is reasonable (not sure when was her last time in a burger place...). Was in town visiting Saugerties with some friends and made a reservation here at 7 PM on a Friday night. We showed up at 6:45 and they told us they were behind a little and would text us when the table was ready. We went to another bar to drink for a little while. When we didn't receive a text by 7:45 we went to check and see what was going on. We were then told it would be another 30-45 minutes. We were then told we would be called and texted immediately when our table was ready. We waited for a little bit and then decided to order pizza down the street. They never called or texted me that my table was ready... it's kinda become the joke of the weekend. Really unprofessional.. wouldn't ever recommend. I give this place 4 stars for service and ambiance but 3 stars for the food. The place is awesome. Real old building, old bar and alot of history. The have a beer mug club. The beer mugs are custom made by a husband and wife team in town and change every year. You sign up for the club $60 per year you get your mug and 4 more ounces of beer than a pint glass everytime you fill up! You're mug has a number on it and hangs above the mirror behind the bar. I hear it can get a little contentious at times when some folks don't get the number they wanted - Ha!!! The French Onion Soup looks terrific and the Guinness Stout broth is delicious. The problem was the onions. I don't think they used the correct onions that the soup calls for. They were on the sharp side of flavor and more of a cabbage type texture. ( if that makes any sense to you FO conouseurs out there). The double fried chicken wings were awesome and cooked perfectly. stopped in 12/29/2015 for lunch with the family after driving from central PA. After several hours on the road in snowy and icy conditions with was a welcome find off the Thru-way. Scott the bartender was very helpful and service oriented. From beer selection to lunch selections his recommendations were on the money. This place was a pleasant surprise. We got put in the side room which was a little strange since it was a bit barren but I'm going to focus on the food. I had the garlic truffle wings which tasted kind of Asian but was really good. The onion rings were also great but my favorite was the thanksgiving sandwich. It was really good, surprisingly good. Disappointing is how I'd describe our visit to this establishment. it was freezing inside. Had to eat with my parka on. Music was too loud. Coffee was cold. When we asked for more milk we were told they only had a little bit left. Next course was soup. Luke warm at best. Sent it back. It was plenty hot when we got it back and it was delicious. Was traveling through New England and upper NY state and stumbled upon Saugerties and had a hunkering for a good burger. Found this place via the other reviewers and was pleasantly surprised. Looked like most of the businesses in the town were converted to restaurants, shops and even saw a yoga place. Thought it was just fantastic that they all kept the 50s/60s vibe while creating new and exciting places to support. There was even a former JJ Newberry store on the strip! The food was great. I wound up at the Dutch Ale House thanks to Yelp! My friends and I were heading to Saugerties for the wonderful and Annual Garlic Festival. I looked up restaurants in the area and the pictures with reviews of the Dutch Ale caught my attention. We finally made after the festival and what a treat indeed! We started off with some great Southern Tier PumKing Spice from the nice selection of Ales. We dived in and order some Truffle & Parmesan Fries w/ wings for appetizers... Both dishes were delicious, the wings were nicely seasoned, crispy with tender middle. I couldn't stop eating the fries... Moving to the entrees we ordered a couple of burgers and Turkey Sandwiches. There were no complaints! Everyone was very happy with their selections. Big Shout to our server (Kaja, D.) she was vital in making the choices and great experience.
