I say this with all sincerity, The Dutchess is not just a restaurant, it is a collaboration of some of the most talented artists of our time. We live in Los Angeles and are fortunate to be surrounded by so many incredible restaurants, and we had high expectations of this latest project by some of our favorite restauranteurs. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. We got in on a Sunday late night walk-in, and one of the owners greeted us, brought us drinks while we waited, and chatted with us a bit before our meal. Despite dishes being sold out even as we were ordering (it takes the chef seven hours to prepare the biriyani so get there early if you want it!), we still had *the most incredible meal we have had in over three years.* If you are Jonathan Gold-loving food nerds like us, this is an experience that cannot be missed. Oh, and a friendly reminder to be kind to restaurant workers. This restaurant is new and working out its kinks on top of dealing with Covid, staffing shortages and supply chain issues. Places as special as this don't just happen overnight, they grow and evolve and if you're lucky, you can keep coming back to see what they become. I only had a drink at the bar but it was a great experience. The bartender and host were super lovely. The place was very busy and we came in without a reservation. They gave a space at the bar and we enjoyed a lovely glass of wine and a cocktail that the bartender suggested. Very cute place with many rooms and a back courtyard. Went for pastries in the morning. Very Weird , Very strange and very rude service. Long story. Would not recommend. Had to go back in to get the final two items of six ordered. Good thing I checked the box before driving home. More rude behavior from both pastry ladies. On top of all that they were not even good. Awesome food and baked goods, set in the historic building that once housed Bill Bakers bakery for decades, and still has the ambiance typical of Ojai's heritage. I've had dinner there twice, and must say the food is to die for and the service is wonderful. There was a slight difference though on a recent visit. It seems that prices were higher, and portions smaller than at our last visit just a few months ago. A main dish at $40 consisted of a delicious fish fillet with curry sauce. No vegies on the side, just the fish. Side dishes must be ordered separately and were pretty expensive too. We like to order several different things and share them, our version of a tasting menu, but the serving sizes seem smaller now so that's not working for us anymore. Sides, starters and dessert generally range from $12-$25 each. Drinks didn't fit into our budget at all. If cost isn't an issue and a $$$ bill is ok, it's an awesome place to treat yourself to the best food in town! Be sure to make reservations though, it's getting quite popular. read more

Had a great time at The Duchess! We began our meal with naan, crispy potatoes and chickpea tofu, and without a doubt, the chickpea tofu was the highlight. The chickpeas are pressed, which gives a creamy consistency reminiscent of cheese - I don't know how it works, but it's phenomenal paired with the crispy texture of the shell. Lastly, you can't really go wrong with naan paired with butter (this was my favorite snack as a kid, so it felt nostalgic). Entrees - Coconut Curry and Grass-Fed Beef Masala Coconut Curry was phenomenal, highly recommend getting this - Make sure to pair it with the naan, and you won't be disappointed Grass-Fed Beef Masala - Felt average. The beef was tender, masala felt like it was lacking some spice. Dessert - Mango Lassi Pie and Coconut Creme Brulee I would come to this restaurant again solely for the mango lassi pie. The pie was perfect - Not too sweet and incredibly flavorful. The Coconut creme brulee is definitely worth trying, although I probably wouldn't get that again (would instead order two mango lassi pies). I've wanted to try the Dutchess since it opened. And wow, having set high expectations, they were exceeded! The food was incredible. Literally every dish. That's not typical of restaurants. And the service was remarkable. They were so good with our energetic 2 year old who inhaled his butter noodles but even had the curry dishes. Can't wait to go back. I went here twice during our stay on ojai. Once for a cocktail, got the midsommar which was yummy, but also the reason it's getting 4 stars and not 5, because a cocktail shouldn't be $20. Crazy! Went for breakfast the next day, my iced latte was very good. Got the big breakfast plate which was also amazing, but wish they gave more options than over hard and sunny side up for the eggs because those left a bit to be desired. It was filling though compared to my husbands meal which was the chicken and waffles which he said was yummy, just too small. read more

We're just in Ojai on a brief visit. The receptionist at our hotel recommended The Dutchess for morning pastries. Very glad she did. The pastries were to die for. Not cheap, but worth every penny. I don't think I've ever had a better plain croissant, even in Paris. And the variety was astounding. Plus it's a very pleasant place with friendly staff. Expensive but worth it. Best coffee/lattes in Ojai. I've been to the Dutchess at least 2 dozen times as I reside in town (lucky me). I've sampled many breakfast and some lunch items and was only once disappointed when I tried the quiche which didn't have any flavor, but for the most part, you can't go wrong. It's a large place with different seating areas including an outside. The customer service is good which is something that can be hard to come by in this town and they are super dog friendly. read more

My friends and I went to the Dutchess in Ojai for breakfast/lunch. We got Fried Chicken Sando which we loved. We also got the Breakfast Plate which had 2 sunny side eggs, bacon, sourdough toast and Roasted Potato's. It was delicious. In addition we liked the Pain Au Chocolate Croissant, the Gluten Free Brownie and the Brown Butter Spelt Chocolate Chunk Cookie. I would recommend this restaurant. There are outside tables, tables in the front area of the restaurant but there were lots of seating options in a second room behind where you ordered your food. I would come back to The Dutchess the next time I am in Ojai. read more

We came here about two years ago, twice, and loved it. When we came last night for our anniversary we splurged but thought it would be worth it. It was underwhelming. We started with the naan - it was very thin. Tasty but not what I expect from naan. Then we had the fried ochre - very small portion and presentation was lacking. Taste was fine but nothing amazing. We had the squash which again - ok but not fantastic. We ended with the lamb biryani which I remember being so amazing. It was basically lamb flavored rice in a pastry shell. There may have been two-three tablespoons of ground lamb in the entire dish very finely ground. It had good flavor but not worth the money. We shared all the dishes thinking we would have more than enough but we left hungry. (And I'm not a big eater!) I was also disappointed by the service. Our waitress took our order - various people brought out the dishes as they were ready, but she never came back to ask how things were or if we needed anything (would have loved to order another drink). We did like the nice variety of non alcoholic drinks since we don't drink. My husband's cocktail was amazing - I would have loved to get the chance to order one myself. Sadly, we won't be coming back. Although, in the day time they have coffee to go, which we did twice this weekend as it was very tasty. read more

This place has gone downhill. Went when they opened and the tandoori chicken was served in a large pot on a big bed of rice. The flavor was great and reminded me of how it was made at the chef's previous restaurant; Tallulas in Santa Monica. Came back for a very special occasion on Valentine's Day. The food took so long to come out it ruined the vibe of our night. When it did come out, the chicken was served with NO side included. Had to order rice extra and it was hardly enough. The chicken was slathered in sauce which seemed like a cheap substitute for the previous grilled flavor. Besides the fact the portion was cut in half. Used to be shareable for two. I won't ever come back considering how expensive it is and how little value you get in return. read more

This review is for the bakery/cafe and not the main restaurant. We visited the cafe the Saturday after opening. It was a about 9 AM and there was about a 15 min wait in line to order. It looked like even though we weren't super late(I believe they open at 7AM) they were already sold out of many items- specifically cinnamon rolls and morning buns- which were what we had come for. I guess the early bird gets the cinnamon roll! There were still many delicious looking baked goods to choose from- both sweet and savory. We opted for the apple turnover and a pistachio-orange scone. My daughter said the turnover was just like apple pie- the crust supper flakey and buttery. The scone had a great flavor and was crisp on the outside while still moist on the inside- it was delicious! The latte was perfect, although I would have gotten a larger size if it had been an option and my daughters Carmel macchiato with almond milk was good- although she didn't really taste the Carmel. I am sure we will try for the cinnamon roll again in the near future- I am happy to see that this new business is doing so well! read more

First time in Ojai and had dinner reservations at The Dutchess. EVERYTHING was delicious, but our favorite dishes were the Crispy Rice Salad, Grass-fed Beef Masala, Pork Belly, Biryani, and Spiced Ground Chicken. After mains we had a house-made non-alcoholic digestif, which was soooo good. Ended with sampling all desserts on the menu. Each one was super tasty, no wrong choice, but the Mango Lime Pie and Queen of the South Tart were favorites at our table. The staff was attentive and welcoming. The atmosphere was energetic, yet relaxed. Great for a special night out. Five stars. Can't wait to come back next time we are in Ojai. read more

We are in Ojai for a girls week and came here for dinner the other night. My uncle is from Burma and we decided to come here since we haven't had Burmese food since our childhood. One of the things my uncle always made was chicken khao swe. So we ordered the closest thing on the menu which was Ohn no khao swe (Chicken Noodle). Wow. It was pretty damn close and brought back wonderful memories of cooking this dish with him. It was delicious! We wish that dish was bigger, like the big pot we used to make so there were tons of leftovers. We also had Dylan's ojai lamb biryani which surprised us. We all expected it to come in a filo dough ring but instead came out like a chicken pot pie (but with lamb). It was amazing! The flavors were so tasty and I love the flaky crust. The spring vegetable dish...I would pass on this. For $20 you got a few pieces of raw veggies. Not worth it at all. We also ordered Mohinga which my aunt used to make. It was tasty with a small piece of fish on it. Wish it was larger for the price. Overall, it was a very pricey evening, but we did enjoy our meal and the service was good. The only reason why I down rated this restaurant by a star is because when I was visiting Ojai over this past week, I was turned down for a table at 8:30 on Wednesday even though their were still patrons inside and the posted hours are open until 9:30pm. Oh - and the tandoori oven was out of commission. :( C'est la vie... So we went the next night - and made sure to get an earlier table. The setting was nice - kind of loud but this made it very comfortable to have a casual conversation and even a few laughs with my party. I really do not care for a stuffy atmosphere. And Burmese cuisine? How exactly should that look? We started with crispy potatoes and chickpea fritters. Both wonderfully presented. Between the two I liked the fritters more. Oh and they brought some fresh sourdough and butter - which was delicious but I did not eat much so I would actually have room for the main. Then we shared the Beef Masala and the Goat Curry. The goat was wonderful, but that Masala was to die for! Paired with a nice bottle of Syrah from SLO town and we were really rolling through the meal. This is my favorite restaurant! The food is always incredible, and as someone who is gluten free they have not only abundant options but they are all flavorful and delicious. The service here from everyone is always kind, gracious and knowledgeable. Eddie was like hanging with a friend! And Brittany was so kind and fun to chat with. My favorite dish is the chickpea curry, you cannot go wrong with it! And the desserts are truly *chefs kiss*. I dream regularly about the olive oil cake. Smash Hit! Such a wonderful evening. Near tears twice. The service, atmosphere, food presentation, quality and taste... all A+ ... can not wait to go back. My wife and I highly recommend the Fermented Tea Leaf Salad - it was a revelation. The skewers, the naan, the pickled plate, the samosas (especially the cilantro mint green sauce!!), were over the moon. We even reluctantly had the chicken hearts skewers, which I have never had before, they were incredible! And different! Next we enjoyed the braised beef masala, with rice and cucumber raita - it was excellent, but next time I'm going to ask if they can make it spicy! After all the intense flavors it fell a bit flat against that backdrop - but I like spice! I'll ask for hotter next time. For desert we had a port and the chocolate meringue salted caramel dessert, and coconut creme brûlée - the latter was beyond STUNNING. Julia was our server and she was amazing - passionate, informed, experienced, knowledgeable - and was happy to let us gush about the good time we were having. Truly a wonderful evening. Arguably a tad pricey for an impromptu dinner out - but 100% absolutely worth every penny. We will be coming back again very soon - and I can't wait! I loved everything about The Dutchess. I've been wanting to go here since it has opened and FINALLY can say it is delicious. Aside from the fact that I absolutely LOVE Burmese food, and Ventura county lacks diverse food outside of American and Mexican food... this place is fantastic. The vibe is super trendy and cool but bakery in the front section is very cozy. I had delicious naan with a compound butter, tea leaf salad (one of my favorite salads of all time), beef masala, pork belly, spiced coconut rice, and finally Queen of the South tarte. Cocktails were also so flavorful and spot on. Wished I lived closer so I could keep going. Highly recommend if you need a change of food in Ventura County or anytime you're in Ojai. read more

Their bread is really good. The Dutchess seems to always be packed on the weekends, no doubt due to their advertising in major media outlets. As a local, I think their food is OKAY. I was definitely turned off when I ordered a ham and cheese croissant and they refused to warm it for me (which is standard practice at 95% bakeries and cafes). It wasn't enjoyable to eat it cold and I definitely wasn't impressed considering the price. You can expect to pay a pretty penny here, and the portions are small or "precious" . I personally prefer to go next store to Ojai Rotie for pastries (not as big of a selection, but less expensive and tastier). I think it's worth trying the Dutchess, but there are better options out there. read more

Oh noooo. The last two times we've gone here, we've ended up at home realizing we have a raw morning bun. Last time was a croissant. For the price, that just feels crazy. Also the way they have their cash register/pastry case organized feels chaotic.
