Oh.Em.Geeee. This place is awesome! My husband and I wanted to try out something new and it was hard to pass up The Broken Egg after reading so many great reviews. We went around 10 this morning (Saturday) and the place was packed, with plenty of folks waiting to be seated. They told us it would be about 15-20 minutes, but I think the wait was closer to just 10 minutes, not bad at all. The restaurant has a really open layout with a large bar through the middle. Bright & colorful decor make it very inviting and it has a fun vibe about it. After being seated, we were greeted by our waitress who was super nice and back in a flash with our waters and Spicy Bloody Mary's. The drinks were awesome, great spice to them and they were nice and thick, not watery at all like at some places. We were both craving some delicious biscuits and gravy and that's just what we got! Maybe about 10 minutes after ordering, our food was out, piping hot and soooo amazing. The biscuits were light and fluffy, tasted fresh and homemade and were smothered in a delicious peppered white sausage gravy. It comes with a side of 2 eggs cooked however you like. I got mine over easy and they were perfect. I chose the hash brown cubes (instead of the shredded) and they were like yummy little golden french fry cubes. The waitress recommended them and said they were awesome with the gravy and boy, was she right! Move over ketchup, white sausage gravy is the new condiment for these taters! You can't argue with the quality of the food. It truly is top-notch. I've eaten here several times and always left fat & happy. The only downside is that the place is soooo good that you have to wait forever to be seated. This isn't always the case on weekdays, but don't even think about going on a Sat or Sunday morning for breakfast. I've been to this location several times. After each visit, I remind myself that I said I wouldn't return and then I forget because it's been so long and I go back. And the same cycle begins. The food was cold, the hash browns I received looked like the last bit of crumbs from an empty frozen hash brown bag. My mother ordered grits... and being from the south, I am not sure what she actually received and the sausage links were rubbery. I am writing this review as a mental note to myself in hopes that I never make this mistake again and that others can be forewarned. Wow this place is fantastic! The only reason it's not 5 stars is because I really wasn't comfortable here. SOOO much hustle and bustle and the hard booth bench felt like church pews. We opted to sit at the first available bar seats instead and wound up waiting about 25 minutes to be seated on a Saturday morning at about 10am. When we were finally seated, I heard the hostess quoting about 40 minutes for a party of 2. Expect to wait, but the food here is outstanding and very reasonably priced. Despite the sense of urgency everyone in here can feel from everyone rushing around, the service was also super friendly and efficient. The delciously seasoned, fresh, and perfectly cooked food was really worth the wait here. I had an egg white meditteranean omelette, grits and rye toast. I wouldn't even think of not cleaning my plate off. SOOO yummy! We aren't from the area but whenenever we're back, we'll probably stop in! read more

Ahhhhh Broken Egg - FANTABULOUS! I have been to Broken Egg on multiple occasions and it was my friend's and I's go to spot for a late breakfast between classes or even a birthday dinner during law school. I always enjoyed the atmosphere!!!! I agree that the servers might be hired for appearance rather than there ability to serve but once we found a good one, we stuck to that server and didn't have a problem. Their mixed drinks are good. Burgers are outstanding and once for dinner, I had a spinach/veggie lasagna that was to die for! I mean the portion was humongous but it was just so very, very yummy, if a little messy! I would recommend this place over and over again. I WISH they would open another location in Norfolk or Virginia Beach so I could have one close to visit. I think a great location would be down near Shore Drive somewhere. I am on the mailing list and love the emails that I get about specials. Also, they do catering and private parties! Service was super slow, the waitress didn't really seem to have the patience to deal with my nearly deaf father in law, and the food was meh. I got "the skillet" with no meat, and it was just lacking. The potatoes were the best part, but there were only 3 or 4 in the entire dish. The eggs seemed over cooked and the cheese didn't seem to melt into the food. There was really no cohesion to the dish. My boyfriend got the hash, which he said tasted like the kind from a can, and the biscuits and gravy. He said the biscuit was good, but he prefers my home made gravy sauce better. This is saying something, because he *never* prefers the gravy I make at home to the kind in restaurants. We will not be back. read more

My husband and I came to Egg Bistro for brunch. It was very clean and organized. There were no tables with dirty dishes. All available tables were clean and ready to be occupied. We were immediately greeted and informed that we could sit any where. They hostess was polite when she brought us our menus. Our waitress came to the table a few seconds later. Fast service. My husband ordered the Southwestern Omelet and I ordered the Bayou (I'm from Louisiana). It's an omelet with shrimp etoufee and sausage. My husband's omelet was good with great flavor. Nice fresh, jalapeños....exploding with cheese! It was fulfilling. My omelet was delicious also....coming from Virginia. But since I'm a Cajun, I'd have to say that it doesn't hold up against my etoufee or what I can get back home. I give it a 3 but it was still good. Now.....smh....the grits. Lord....the grits....smh. They were awful. I don't know if the grains were thick or if they had a 5 year old make them. I've NEVER had grits like this. They were saltless and the grains seemed to be huge. It was like eating lumpy grits and everyone knows lumps in grits are a no no. The biscuits were good but didn't come out very hot so my butter just sat on top of the biscuit instead of melting. Afterwards, I had the bread pudding. I've seen people rave about it on Yelp so I decided to try it. It was basically a cinnamon roll. That's not bread pudding so they get a 2 for deception and a 3 for taste. I'd go back because their were some other things on the menu that I'd like to try. read more

We live close by (thankfully) and have been frequenting Broken Egg since it opened. The owners and entire waitstaff are awesome, we have honestly never had bad service here, and almost every time, I'd rate the service as well above average or excellent. The food is delicious, and a great value, for both the breakfast and dinner selections. Burger night is my favorite, and the backyard Burger is delicious, though we have tried all of the burger by now, and haven't had one we didn't like. We always order a carafe or two on Sangria night.Prime rib night is our second favorite to burger night. For lunch I enjoy the cold plate trio or the buffalo chicken sandwich. For breakfast I go with the easy choice, the southwestern omelet with jalapenos or banana and chocolate chip pancakes(not on the menu but they make them if requested, and they are delicious). Egg bistro is one of our favorite local restaurants, and we will keep coming back. Only downside can be the long wait on Sunday morning, and most saturdays mornings as well. If are not willing to wait more than 30 minutes, don't go there during peak breakfast hours, or you will probably be disappointed. ...we just go earlier or later and avoid the rush. The fact that they have expanded twice and still have people willing to wait for breakfast says something in itself though. Keep up the great work! read more

Breakfast is usually really good. Expect a wait time-- however, it is not too bad. I have had dinner there once. We got meatloaf and a burger. It wasn't something I would go back for. Also, be careful with the specials. When we went for dinner we ordered what we thought were on special for their drink specials: martinis half off as shown on the board. The waitress even said "yeah, we have those on special." When we got our bill we were charged for our drinks at full price. When we asked about it the waitress then informs us that it is only between a certain time period which the restaurant failed to write on their board and the waitress failed to mention as we ordered. read more

We really like the brunch here. Our first experience wasn't the best, but every time after; the food has been great! One on going complaint is the wait here is HORRIBLE. There are always so many open tables but a wait of at least 45 minutes, which never seems to be accurate. I have worked in many restaurants in the past, and have never seen it this bad. If we can't get there before 9am, we don't go. I wish this wasn't a factor we have to consider because it's an easy fix! read more

SO DISAPPOINTED! Called, said I didn't need a reservation, went there, waited 10 minutes to be seated. After being seated it took fifteen minutes to place a drink order, took another twenty minutes to get the drink (Beer- was warm) Finally ordered food. Ordered Pork Madeira(?), a hamburger and two salads. When the hamburger was delivered (before any salads) the server told me they were out of angel hair pasta, and asked if penne or fettuccine would be okay. I said no, I'll order something else. I ordered Chicken cordon blue....ten minutes later when they delivered the salads, the server said, we now have angel hair pasta, The food delivered was unseasoned and not what I ordered. Two and a half hours for dinner is a bit much. Luckily we were not in a hurry! read more

This is our 3rd time coming here. The first 2 trips were pretty bad (so much so we got a gift certificate from the owner in the hopes of bringing us back). We used it this morning. And while the service was sooo much better (we had silverware this time for example) I'm not sure we will be coming back. Which is a shame bc the food is absolutely fantastic. I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal here. The pancakes and home fries are amazing. The corned beef hash is prob the best in the city. Really the food is almost worth it. Almost. The wait time is usually 30 mins or so, which isn't an issue but everyone is told 15 or 20 mins. Be honest. It's also loud. Very. This is not the place to go if you want to be able to have a conversation over your breakfast/brunch. And as petty as it sounds it's always hot. It's hard to enjoy amazing food when you are sweating into your plate. It's generally cramped and just uncomfortable which again, is a shame. And the new water wine bottles....please. It's hard on your waitstaff and comes off as pretentious. The food is outstanding, but the atmosphere ruins it. read more

Only downsides were the noise level (which actually worked for us since we have a baby that doesn't like to be quiet) and the cold air blowing on us from above. Yes, the wait is insane, and it is annoying, especially in the summer when it is beastly outside and waiting for your table along the outside wall of the restaurant means you are sitting in the sun. Today my husband and I had a great a brunch at the Egg Bistro. The wait was about 25 minutes which I think was not too bad being that it was Easter Sunday. The staff was extremely attentive, probably due to my husband being temporarily handicap (broken foot), nevertheless attentive. The bistro dining area is a decent size although it does not present itself that way from the parking lot. I had the French toast with bacon and grits. My husband had the Monte Cristo with hash browns and scramble eggs with cheese. The portions are hefty and filling. The French toast came with 4 nice pieces of beautifully prepared fluffy portions. The grits were AMAZING!! Very southern in style. My husband enjoyed his meal as well. He even wiggled the toes on his broken foot in celebration of his awesome accomplishment of finishing his plate. For both meals and a boat-load of coffee (I gave it up for lent) our meal was only $29 bucks not bad. The fifth star is only missing as we have been only this one time. I honestly believe that 5th star only comes with consistency. With this in mind we definitely will return once we are permanent residents of Chesapeake. Thanks for an awesome experience. read more

I love this place! It's just a few minutes from my office, so I love to come on Fridays after work (I'm a night shifter, so I get off at 8am) and grab breakfast. Fridays are definitely among their busier days, but if you get there before 8:30, you're almost guaranteed a table as soon as you walk in. I usually sit at the bar, and the waitress up there is the bomb. Once I started going fairly regularly, she remembered my order and gets me fed quickly! I've noticed there are a few new waitresses who are just chilling behind the bar that early, but it means service is faster once things get busy. I have a gluten sensitivity, so I've never tried the sweet treats, but the eggs and hashbrowns are always amazing. They also have a great selection of breakfast meats to make your meal perfect. I love the atmosphere too! Coming in from the night shift, I'm usually there with older men who are either retired or just heading off to work, and it's fun to chat with them. But I also feel no pressure to talk - sometimes I just keep my nose in a book and finish my meal. Biggest tip I have - if you don't like crowds, get there earlier. As a bonus, they have a menu from 7-8 that is WAY cheaper than the regular menu. read more

Visiting VA Beach from NYC. Our friend who lives in VA took us here around noon one day. Love the food! I had the Cinnamon swirl French toast, two eggs, two bacon strips, two turkey sausage and cubed hash browns. All I can say is this was the best breakfast I have ever had at a restaurant. I recently had a brunch date with a colleague here one morning. Seems to be a very popular spot as it was a little after 11am and PACKED! The first thing that stood out to me was how friendly the staff was. This was my 1st time going so I really had no expectations whatsoever. The menu has something for everyone. From pancakes and different types of sausage, to a vegan menu, heart healthy options, low cal options which was very pleasing. I got to see both ends of the spectrum as I am doing this calorie counting thing and my friend is not. I got the grilled chicken and egg white with spinach on wheat sandwich which is toasted and delicious along with a nice sized bowl of fresh fruit. My co worker had 3 HUMONGOUS pancakes, turkey sausage, a bowl of fruit and 3 strawberry mamosa's which she couldn't stop raving about. Our waitress was so enjoyable and attentive. I never got to the end of my drink without her having a refill already waiting for me which means something to me. Unfortunately this place is kind of out of my way so I can't frequent here, but if ever in the area, I will DEFINITELY be back! read more

I like breakfast food the best of all, so when I go here, I always get the French toast; it's the best anywhere; the fried potatoes are bland, and I think shipped in rather than hand made, as they're all the same exact size; no flavor; the bacon is too big and too crispy; I've had the eggs, which I prefer softly scrambled, but they never seem to get it right for me, so I stick with the French toast, I can't go wrong. Great breakfast...great coffee...great service! We were visiting the area (family of 5) and wanted something better than the hotel breakfast thing. The Broken Egg left us all very happy and a few pounds heavier. We ordered a wide variety of food across the 5 of us: banana pancakes, egg "skillet", country fried steak, veggie omelette, fruit salad; all of it was fresh and excellent...and very generously portioned. So today my family and I finally made it a point to eat here for breakfast after reading all the great reviews of this place on yelp. First we were met with a 20 min wait which I was OK with because I figured long lines means great food and service, right? Not so much. OK, I must say first impressions of the facility was pleasant. Nicely decorated, quirky name and pretty cool ceiling fans that I mentioned I wanted for my house. That's pretty much were the good stuff ended. We get seated and the waitress comes to the table. (Hint if they offer the booth next to the front door when its cold outside ask for another table) Service quality was typical for this part of the country, I am world traveled because of my work and Hampton Roads customer service has got to be in my bottom 5. Yes, we got the food we ordered but its all about that little extra that goes a long way when your in customer service. The food comes, really nothing special at all. I was disappointed with just about everything we had. The coffee was pretty good but because we were next to the front door it was cold in like 5 min. Basically I could have made a better breakfast at home for a 4th of the cost or just gone to any major breakfast food chain and had better experience. $2.00 cup of coffee, really?
