Me and my husband are visiting New York for the first time and wanted to eat something before our flight and randomly came upon this spot. First of all, the menu is huge. We ordered Buffalo Wings, Poke Nachos, Crispy Calamari, and Avocado Toast. Every single thing was AMAZING, probably the best food we had in NY. Fish was fresh, avocado toast fresh and crispy. Everything was truly great. Our server Jacob(I believe) was incredibly kind and helpful, overall we met super good service here, which made our time even better. First, I forgot I had come here until I stepped in and it felt familiar. Secondly, same rating, but for different reasons. My first trip was marred by chilly hostesses, crowded bar vibes, and mediocre food. It was saved and upgraded to a 4 by an amazing and attentive bartender. This time, the hostess happily seated me at a comfortable table. Service was good. Drinks were fine. I did make the mistake of ordering the steak again (failed to check Yelp! Until after I had ordered. Do NOT order the steak. Just plain and still fatty with so-so truffle fries. I did have the pigs in a blankey for an appetizer, with Kobe beef wrapped in puff pastry, accompanied by mustard, and sauerkraut. This was quite tasty! So I didn't have an amazing over the top bartender this time, but decent service and a much more welcoming atmosphere. Again, pub type food, burgers, a few mains like steak (pass), chicken Milanese, salmon. Some small pizzas. And some ok cocktails. Main draw to this place is that it's close to the theater district. My family came to this bar after a broadway show. We made a reservation. The staff was professional and accommodating. They sat us in a quiet area upstairs with ample room for all 7 of us. The downstairs was a little more crowded and loud but nothing unmanageable. The food was delicious! We had an assortment of appetizers to split. They were all good portions. If I only had to get one thing it would be the tuna poke nachos they were so yummy. We all got drinks like beers, wine and cocktails. They were all good pours. The cocktail was their spicy marg and it was actually spicy with a good kick and nice cooling cucumber taste. Overall we had a great meal! Love the vibe of this place. Every single dish we ordered was delicious. French Onion Soup - Good, but I would recommend sharing this. Fried Cauliflower - Flavorful and light. Wings (House Buffalo) - I can't stop thinking about these. Sirloin Sliders - So juicy and tender. Fish & Chips - Lightly battered and crispy. Stopped into this spot before a show to catch the end of the UConn game yesterday. Friendly bartender and there were outlets at the bar to charge your phone, which was super convenient. I wanted something light before a big dinner later so I gave the French Onion soup a go. It was delicious! Much heavier than anticipated, but the Gruyere cheese made this a stand out. We came on a snow storm day and it was the perfect escape from the cold! The portion size was huge and the quality was soo good. The service was really nice, they were super attentive with details. The menu was also extensive, there's definitely something for everyone, making it the perfect spot for dates or with family/friends. Highly recommend the tuna poke nachos and the french onion burger (it was so rich the patty was grilled perfectly). We came in after a long day of travel into the city; it was close to our hotel and convenient and let me just say, what a pleasant surprise. No crazy wait for a table. Solid pub near Rock Center. Very clean and smart looking. Loved sitting up front by the huge windows/doors that opened onto the street. Great for people watching. Food was good. I've been here twice this year, January and November. Both times, service was top notch. Food and drinks were GREAT. I had the caesar salad with salmon one time and the other I have the impossible burger. Both delicious! My husband had the turkey sandwich and loved it. The side of broccolini was amazing! The sprinkling of cheese and bread crumbs was amazing. Yum! The place is large, clean, efficient, and well priced. Location is great. I decided to check out the Elgin before an event based on the Great reviews. Unfortunately, the experience did not live up to expectations. To begin with, the menu does not include a full list of their drinks so we had to look up our options on the phone. The food offerings were a mishmash of styles, giving the menu a Cheesecake Factory feel, which may play well given the Times Square-adjacent location. The biggest issue was the unexplained $2 surcharge on each of our whiskeys for ordering them "neat". For the uninitiated, a whiskey "neat" is simply an ounce of whiskey poured into a glass with no ice. It takes the least amount of effort to make of any drink in the bar. I've never seen any bar ever charge anything extra for a "neat" whiskey. It was not priced on the menu nor explained to us by the server. The bartender could not explain the charge either. This felt like a scam that someone may be running on the tourists (little did they know I'm a savvy manhattanite). While the food was passable, fraudulent charges automatically disqualify any restaurant from my book. read more

I visited Elgin Bar yesterday with a friend as a walk-in. When we arrived, the host told us the bar was packed and there were no tables available. We asked to sit at the bar, and his response felt dismissive rather than warm or welcoming -- essentially telling us to find any seat without offering guidance or hospitality. We were eventually served by the bartender, a bald man with glasses. His service started off okay, but when I ordered a salmon burger, he tried to argue that I never said salmon burger I only said Salmon, even though I had already asked him about the different burger options, including what was popular and recommended. Instead of correcting the mistake professionally, the interaction turned into a back-and-forth. When he told me to "calm down," I had to assert that I did order a salmon burger, and that he needed to listen to guests instead of debating them, especially when he is the one providing service. After that, he became more attentive and tried to make up for it, but the overall experience felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. Clear communication and basic hospitality go a long way in service environments. Unfortunately, this visit missed the mark. I don't think I'll be back. read more

Nice pub in Manhattan where I got to enjoy an excellent nightcap. Even though they were pretty busy, the waiter did a great job at taking care of us. My brother had a mocktail, a coffee like drink which was really light and flavorful. I had the "Black Manhattan", a really finely made drink. They specialize in cocktails, and also have a gastro pub like menu. I didn't try it that night but it's a really relaxing place. I'd stop by again for another nightcap. The bone marrow beef burger was tasty. The size was acceptable and filling. I would have liked more beef marrow flavor, so I won't order this again. The fries were a good amount, similar to what everyone gave a few years before pandemic greedflation. I believe oregano might be one of the spices they put on them, I don't like oregano. Buyer beware.... I can no longer support this business because they take advantage of customers. If you order a drink off the menu make sure that if there is more than one type of drink from the same brand that you're explicit in which one you want. If you don't, they will default to pouring you the most expensive option without asking you to clarify. They are so fearful that they will offend you if they give you a heads up that something is expensive that they WILL NOT TELL YOU THE PRICE. They will defend themselves by saying that "Our price is clearly posted on our whisky list for a cost conscious whisky lover." HOWEVER, their defense is marred by the fact that there were multiple types when I ordered by brand and they did not ask me to specify which one I wanted. When I was presented with my bill showing the most expensive option, which was $72. The bartender then said "you look like you can afford a $72 cocktail and look like you know what you are ordering." The ambiance of this place is cool. It's modern with an old style twist to it. What I thought was really cool was they have a drink name after the peaky blinders the show on Netflix. The drink I ordered was the Shelby sour and the 1910 black Manhattan. Both drinks were very well made and had a unique taste. The Manhattan was amazing but the Shelby sour did do the peaky blinders well! Had a reservation for 2 at 5:15pm on 1/30. Blond hostess was very rude. She sat us by the kitchen when there were plenty of other open tables. I asked if we could be moved and she snipped "No we are fully booked, enjoy" and walked away without looking back. Within 10 min, they broke up a table of 6 along the wall to make three tables for 2 and sat 2 other people. Then sat 3 people at a 2-top, with one 2-top remaining empty for a while. Not a great face for the restaurant. It doesn't take that much effort to just be nice and a little bit accommodating when you clearly have the ability. The Elgin is one of my favourite restaurants in the midtown area. As I work nearby, it can be difficult to find a lunch spot that makes you feel warm and welcomed, and Elgin always has. I often go to lunch alone, and I always feel welcomed by Connor and Ana, who have always been attentive and remember the small details. They are some of the best bartenders in the area as well; love that they often rotate the menu depending on the season. I often get the Elgin chopped salad with chicken which is delicious, but I'll change it up and have never been disappointed by their recommendations. Highly recommend stopping in for a lunch or dinner if you're in the area (and even more so around the holiday! It's beautifully decorated!) read more
