Embers is one of those places that makes you feel like, somewhere between your car and the front door, you stepped through a portal that has thrown you back to a different era: Wood paneling, ficuses draped in Christmas lights, 60s style leather arm chairs around the table. (Actually, I suspect they're not '60s style' but original 1960s chairs). Embers is a cross-over between a bar, club and diner. The menu is too. Grab a diner style breakfast, a sandwich, or some fried bar food. Their star dish is something called 'Broasted chicken'. Our incredibly friendly waitress explained the process to me, which involves frying and pressure cooking at once. Sounds a little like an explosion waiting to happen to me, but hey, if it produces delicious crispy-yet-tender chicken and pork chop, I'm all for it! Our waitress gave us a full introduction to Embers, including an overview of their live shows which include everything from country to jazz. On weekdays (except Monday) there's karaoke. I think Embers has known better days, in previous decades, but it seems they still get their share of loyal regulars. I suspect they fill up pretty well on weekend nights. The food is fairly typical for a diner/bar. My friend had the spaghetti with meat sauce and garlic bread. It was not bad, the sauce was chunky and fresh tasting, but the spaghetti was a little overcooked. The garlic bread was good but not spectacular. I decided to go for the all-out fried plate of steak fingers (or are they finger steaks?) with fries. Their fries come in 'beer battered', 'waffles', 'sweet potato' and 'tater tots'. I was tempted to ask for a bit of each but decided to restrain myself and opt for the beer battered fries. And they were very good! Seasoned, crispy, freshly fried. No complaints there. The steak fingers (finger steaks?) were fabulous and tender, though they did need a good sprinkling of salt. Best part about Embers was undeniably the service (well, and the strangely comforting old-time feel). Our waitress told us about the history of Embers, which includes a previous incarnation as a chicken farm (!). Apparently the dining area and bar were the chicken coup. I'd hoped there were photos, but the waitress didn't know of any. It doesn't seem like Embers has changed a whole lot from its initial conversion from chicken farm into a diner and club, but Embers has survived thanks to its loyal customers, and as James says: It has a very authentic dive-y charm! I can't wait to come back for some live music and more $3.50 ultra alcoholic cocktails. read more

Love it! Had the prime rib with salad, mashed potatoes, vegetables and Texas toast. All for $18.95. The food was excellent. The service is friendly and helpful. We didn't have to wait long for our food and everything came out just as we had requested. The carrot cake was really yummy, too! read more

I use to eat here (12 years ago) on sales lunches... they offered a MASSIVE burger that was topped with ham, egg, and sprouts. Those were some great lunches! After all that time, I've recently paid a visit or 3 to the Embers, and it's been one thing for sure = consistent. I give five stars because it's always been good'ish food and GREAT service. Good service can make a lot of other shortcomings kinda fade away, in my opinion. I've only been here for breakfast the past few times. And of those few visits I've only had the philly omelet (I don't recommend it), a skillet, and the chicken fried steak. I'm not a fan of the coffee here, which is laughable--given that I'm the kind to happily slurp down 7-11 coffee. But alas... It's always been on the weak'ish/watery side, and hard to keep my cup full. I realize the latter has more to do with the staff and/or my effectiveness in getting their attention. I own part of that. But the watery/warm bit of it... so not my deal. But coffee is coffee, ultimately. I drink it and move on. I guess I'm saying that I surely wouldn't take a buddy her for good coffee and conversation. The food (except for the Philly) has been plentiful and good. It's definitely "run of the mill" bar breakfast. I realize there are some bars that are tops in the breakfast & food depts., but this place doesn't fit that bill, for me. It's always good enough to eat though. :) I'm hoping to get back around here for some lunch and dinner items. I feel like the breakfast isn't representative of the Embers full potential. But the experiences so far have been good enough to fetch a 5 star from me. It's kinda dark & dated in here. But I'm not sure you could expect much more of it. We walked in and the place was pretty empty, however, it was a Monday night, approx. 5:45PM. We noted the specials, reviewed the menu, and committed to giving it a try. You'll notice in other reviews that the ambiance is lacking, but really, I insist you shake it off and expand your horizons. This place has some of the largest portions of food I have ever seen for the price. We ordered beef tacos, small cobb salad, and the prime rib -think taste & value oriented. The taco that I ordered, ended up being 2 fairly large tacos, they were very good beef with cabbage and an amazing chipotle-style sauce was served on the side. The small Cobb salad was NOT small. I split it with my date and still had salad left over - it was huge, hearty and a healthy helping of avocado, tomato, egg, chicken, blue cheese, bacon and the usual Cobb salad toppings (feel like I may be missing some)! Now the prime rib, I think we'll be dreaming about the prime rib for many months to come, juicy, mouth water, cooked perfectly, hardly any fat, and way more than 2-average-size-people could eat. The doggies were absolutely stoked to receive the left over trim. The prime rib also came with fresh, from scratch, cream of mushroom soup and when dipped with the Texas toast, its a match-made in diner heaven. It also showcased mash potatoes and gravy, and steamed mixed veggies. The veggies were probably the least exciting, but they were definitely fresh and not frozen. There was NO room for desert, but they had an extensive desert menu. I wish they offered wheel-chair roll-out service to your car, we were stuffed. If you have a big eater, this is the place to take them. I also noted that they have Thanksgiving dinner for $11.95 - it included turkey and ALL the fixings, plus pumpkin pie. I have no doubt it would be great and substantial. I jokingly told my date we're skipping his Mom's and going to Embers. Random side note: used the ladies restroom on the way out, and I'll say that it is the NICEST room in the building. I was completely stunned by how cute and done up it was. Do it! read more

Back in the 1970's and early 1980's I used to go to the Eugene Auto Auction and then eat here. Heck, I'd enjoy a drink here too! It's a dark bar and given that I'd have been out in the hot sun trying to find junkers worth buying and driving back to Coos Bay, I counted Embers as my refuge to refuel and relax at before making the 2 hour drive. It wasn't a fancy place. It wasn't even modern as it reminded me of the late 1950's type of adult eat-n-drink places one would see the mobsters hang out at in Joisey. However it did the job back then. If it does the same today and you want to eat, get drunk and get out of the sun, go to Embers. It's not for everyone, especially in the Age of Foodies, but it has it's place. read more

This place makes the BEST steak as well as Reuben Sandwiches. It's been around for a million years and has the decor to prove it. Kinda feels like you are hanging in your friends basement in the 70's, with a full bar. Local patrons whom have been going there forever. Loyal patrons mean consistently good food. We have gone here for the last few years every Sunday yes today was the worst experience we have ever had we walked in at 1015 for breakfast and it took over 30 minutes to get drinks and my daughter eggs to keep her happy. After asking 4 times and seeing the tables around us who had all ordered after us get their food before us. We spoke with the manger after an hour of no food and being told it's getting cooked now. I love the old timey feel of this place. It's dark and generally quiet. The bartenders have always been lovely. There is Karaoke that would be a good place to start if you are new, due to the fact that there are only four other people singing. The tacos were simple and good. We called this place after the Dead show to ascertain they were open to serve food. Got there and we were dumfounded that there were NO tables being served. I had been hunting down the best Chicken Fried Steak and gravy combo in the area. Ember's is my winner. I am from Texas and often search out my necessaries and this place does it right. Tenderized, pressed, and fried as it should be. I took many recommendations from locals, but all of them were pretty meh for my standards. I noticed most people like a definite west coat or Oregon style of gravy-- they all taste very similarly and not to my liking. I don't know whats different at Ember's but my mouth knows there are issues. Stopped in for dinner after reading the reviews about the chicken fried steak, my boyfriend's favorite. It took a while for it to be cooked but worth the wait. Had unexpected entertainment while we waited. Apparently the first and third Wed of the month they have a live Dixieland band. If there was the possibility of zero stars that's what I would give this place. I tried to take my Mom here for her birthday Saturday night. We walked in with my father and my fiance and were told to sit anywhere. We grabbed seats and were given menus and silverware by a waitress. After that no one ever returned to take drink orders, bring us water, or even acknowledge our presence. The waitress returned to the room several times to take care of a larger group but never even looked at our table. We got up and walked out and went to a different restaurant. They are family friendly and very reasonably priced. We have always been happy that we chose to eat here. Their food is really good and you get plenty to eat. Driving up, I was a little intimidated about what we were getting ready to walk into but the staff was very nice and quickly put me at ease. We walked in, late lunch group, with a party of 10 after helping my parents move into their new place after relocating from out of state. We were seated immediately amidst 5 other active tables; so steady business. It took quite awhile for our server to place and fulfill our drink orders, 2 coffee, 2 iced tea, a lemonade, a coke, and 4 waters, but hey, was happy to visit with my parents after not being in close proximity to them for about 30 years, so easy distraction. Drinks served, food order taken, and things improve. Food was well prepared and looked appetizing. The only thumbs down going to the daily soup, chicken gumbo. Sorry, just wasn't very good. I think that this restaurant could easily be bypassed, as it looks worn from the outside and is located in something of an industrial/retail area, but sadly, you could be missing out on a good to great food experience. Pleasantly, very surprised! Best Ribeye steak and Prime rib in Eugene. The dinners were perfectly cooked to order. Grass fed great beef and side dishes were enjoyed as well. The service was very friendly and the desert menu was full of nice tortes, tiramisu and pies. Also, offering nightly dinner specials too. My family ate here this morning, after our normal breakfast spot has become less than pleasing. The appearance is a bit miss leading, but after reading some reviews we decided to try it. The service as stated in previous reviews is a bit slower but it definitely wasn't the worst. The food however is awesome my hash was fresh and delicious, my wife's chicken fried steak was perfectly friend and the gravy was out of this world. Don't let the looks scare you off try this place. The wife's burger was cremated, black burnt both sides. My hash browns were soaked in cooking oil. Pointed this out to the waitress but she didn't seem to be interested or give an option or substitute. Service was slow. and we waited 25 minutes to get our food. Also waited a long time for drink refills. We were the only ones in the dining room. One other car was parked outside and that person was in the bar. Again a long wait for the bill. $24 for this.. I went here for the Broasted Chicken- but- was told that the fryer was down and would not be fixed until summer- I got the philly cheese steak sandwich and it was really DRY with hardly any cheese. I had to ask for mayo to try to lube it up- but it did not help any. I liked the way the other patrons seemed to know each other and talked to each other like a "cheers" episode. This place is an old school American style hole-in-the-wall place that hasn't changed much since the 1960s. Want a place you can take Grandma to and not have her fuss about the menu being too exotic? Want a place for a good and filling breakfast without the fancy-schmancy brunch ambiance? Head here. I've dined here a few times and the food reminds me a bit of what I ate as a kid when we went out to the old fashioned diners; it's good, honest, simple food. One of the handful of places in the area with a working broaster, it's kinda nice that you can still get a good broasted chicken here. We have been coming to this place off and on for the last year. Normally the breakfasts are amazing and great portion sizes. This last time how ever was not the case. My chicken fried steak and my sons pancake where great as always but my husband ordered the corn beef has and it was a very small helping only two or three potato chunks in it and the corn beef was way over cooked it tasted like jerky and was super salty as well as his over easy eggs that were cooked all the way through. Our waitress was great when we brought it to her attention she took it right back and comped his meal. We did not order anything else for my husband since my 3 month old was starting to get fussy. Excellent food and it was worth the wait. But if you don't have at least 1.5 hours don't go on a Sunday. They were slammed and the pour servers were doing everything they could to manage it. They are just terribly understaffed for the amount of business they get on a Sunday. read more

IHOP, Sherry's, and Denny's Have nothing up on this place. I even dislike bringing them up in this post at all. its like comparing gold to lead. If you try Embers food you will be a repeat customer.
