My husband and I both got the Groupon for the soak, massage, and chiropractic consult. I was most interested in the soak, as I'd seen Altered States years ago and have been fascinated ever since. The soak was interesting, and I can see the appeal for some folks, it just wasn't my thing (the floating itself was fascinating, but after a while it just felt weird being in that strange buoyant stew). The massage was ok, nothing special but by no means bad. The vibe of the place in general was great - relaxed, clothing optional, and peaceful. My husband and I both loved the beautiful tile work in the showers. Just gorgeous! But when it came to the chiropractic side of things, though, that's when it really went downhill for the both of us. They make you come in 3 times: once for x-rays and evaluation, once for an adjustment, and the next day to "check in" with you, when really all they do is try to get you to sign up for a hugely expensive and drawn out treatment plan. AND they call you after your adjustment to check in on you. AND they want your spouse/significant other to come in with you for that 3rd appointment! Who has the time for all this? During my husband's 3rd appointment they recommended $5,000 worth of work, over the course of a year, for 3x per week. Are you kidding? My husband says he knows a guy who broke his BACK in a car wreck, and that's how much treatment HE needed. My husband has never had a back injury. When it came time for my evaluation, I told them that I have constant pain in my hips. But yet they talked to me mostly about my neck, and when I tried to get them to talk more about my hips and what I could do for my constant pain, I felt ignored. The 2nd appointment was so weird - they brought me into a room with another patient and made us watch a video about the importance of listening to the chiropractor's recommendations. It was a cheesy, poorly made video, and it seemed to me that they must have doubts about the validity of what they are doing if they feel the need to convince me. I did get an adjustment, and it was...whatever it was. The best part of that visit was the woman who came in and did some muscle work on me. She had good energy in her hands. I called and cancelled my 3rd appointment, which was supposed to be this morning. I don't need to sit through the high pressure sales tactics - I've already experienced it when they made my husband bring me in for his 3rd appointment. I'm sure they would have tried the same crazy haggling thing they did with him, and I just honestly don't have time for that in my life. Oh, and lastly, after I called at 8am and left a message on their phone telling them I wouldn't be in today and would not be rescheduling my appointment, they have called me no less than THREE times, twice on my cell and once at work. I have been here on 3 separate occasions and would agree that the detached customer service really brings the experience from a 8/10 to about a 3. I asked the receptionist a couple of casual questions while we were checking out. She was short with me, didn't look at me one time while she was talking to me, and had a disgusted look on her face throughout the whole process. Seriously puts a damper on the end of an otherwise relaxing experience! There was a young male at the front desk the first time I went and he was rather pleasant. The other ladies could learn something from him. If you are the business owner reading this... PLEASE train your employees on customer service. Or hire new ones that don't let their bad day or pessimism stink up the place! If you read the reviews, you'll see that it means A LOT to your customers. read more

I am a big fan of wallowing in hot water. Like the porcine beast that I am (or is it more ursine?), lounging around in heated pools is totally my jam. All the better if I don't have to bother with pesky clothing. In a perfect world, I'd have a naturally-refreshing hot spring in my backyard and a sauna. Alas, however, I have neither. So on occasion I find myself making the rounds of local places to get my soak on. Everett House is the one-time relation (or home to?) Common Grounds, a spot up on NE 33rd that I've been enjoying for years. The main downside to Common Grounds is that it's about 20-30 minutes from my house (depending on traffic). So I decided to check out Everett House - a much closer alternative. This spot is a clothing-optional spa with hot tub, sauna, steam room, float tanks (extra - by appointment) and more. It consists of two houses with a sort of shared backyard, and it's situated in a residential hood. This makes for an incredibly awkward layout. You cut in through the houses to get to the main lobby (basement of 2927), which then connects to the backyard through a backdoor. The changing space is fairly small, but the backyard is nice, with an open layout, lounge chairs, fire pit, tub and some cold soak claw foot tubs (turned off in the winter). Next door is the "quiet side" with steam room and float tanks. You can cut through from the back side of 2927 to the quiet side, but you have to put a robe or sarong on to do so, since the clothing optional area doesn't connect all the way through. The tub itself is nice, and the fire pit is a worthy touch. However they don't seem to regulate how many people can come in at any given time, and the night we were there, it was PACKED. This makes things less relaxing. I guess in the summer it would be okay, since a lot of folks would be spending more time outside the tub. But not so much in winter. While the crowd at Common Grounds trends toward old hippie, the crowd at Everett House trends towards younger hipster/hippie, which is fine but also can be kind of annoying. One thing I definitely don't go to a clothing optional spa for is the scene. I prefer to feel like it's kind of just a quiet, anonymous place where everyone is just chilling out in their own way. Maybe it was the night I went, but I didn't feel that way here. Other than the bad feng shui and the "scene", this is a decent place to soak. The staff is friendly and on point. I'll definitely be back, but will try to pick an off-time (if that exists). The fact that you don't need a reservation can be nice if you're the one without the reservation. And the location is far superior (for me) than Common Ground. Add on that I give props to anyone trying to create a relaxing, serene place to get your chill on, and it's still a solid 4-stars for me. read more

I bought the Groupon that included a chiropractic exam, a massage, a floatation tank session, and a sauna/steam room session. Elliott J. Mantell D.C. performed the exam - very thorough and informative. I have a regular relationship with my chiropractor and I'm not looking to switch but, if I was, Dr. Mantell might be my kind of chiropractor. The massage was great. My offer came with a 30 minute massage but I upgraded to 1 hour for an additional $25 - glad I did. Floatation tanks have intrigued me for 40+ years - about time I got around to trying one, huh? It wasn't a transcendental, out of body sort of experience (which would have been nice) but I found it totally comfortable and tremendously relaxing. If you are like me, you will think you are relaxing when you first lay back and float - but you're not. While floating it's easy to do the mental inventory of your body parts looking for and releasing retained tension. Probably took me 5 minutes but I got there. My body felt very supported in this medium. I have never been very successful in my attempts at meditation, which probably explains the lack of supernal profundity in my session. If you are adept at meditation (and not accompanied by either of the Phobia sisters - Claustro or Hydro), You really might want to give this a try. I finished off with a sauna then a steam room session. The Everett House facility consists of two neighboring houses - each has a sauna. I only visited the sauna in the house with the floatation tanks. It's rather small and not quite as hot as I would have liked, but still very nice. I understand the other sauna is larger and quite nice as well. I switched over to the steam room which was more to my liking. I could get used to this. All of the staff I dealt with were wonderful. I received a gift of massage, soak, and chiropractic visit as a V-Day present from my boyfriend (I know - pretty great!). I was really excited about the massage but slightly leery about the chiropractic appointment. The woman who massaged me was kind and experienced and made me feel at ease. Unfortunately, the technique used on the chiropractic end of this business was more like visiting a car lot than a healing center. The sales techniques included having me watch a video, needing to bring my boyfriend in to hear about how direly I needed a YEAR of treatment, and follow-up calls. I could even tolerate the sales tactics if I had not prefaced the chiropractic appointment by saying, "I already have a chiropractor that I love." I won't go back and that's disappointing because I REALLY wanted to love this place. read more

I've got mixed feelings about my recent experience at the Everett house. I have been interested in trying a float tank/deprivation tank for quite some time. So, when I saw a groupon I quickly snagged one. First thing I noticed is that you must sign up on the Everett house's website and include a credit card to make any appointments. This is found kind of bothersome. But, I did it anyways. After booking my appointment I got both a call and an email to verify my appointment. This seems like overkill to me. One or the other. So, day of my appointment arrives, I'm pretty excited to try this. I get there kind of early, about 20 minutes before my appointment time. I don't like to be late. So, I walk in and the atmosphere is calming and enjoyable. The receptionist is helpful and I fill out the paperwork. The person behind me in line is also there for a float session. So, my groupon was for 90 minutes which includes 60 minutes of floating and 30 minutes of spa time. After being shown around, it's time to strip down and get washed up and in the tank. This is a clothing optional place, so if you get scared by nakedness, probably not the place for you. The lady explains that 3-5 minutes before the time is up, a staff member will gently knock on the door and let us know it's time. At 1701, I get in the tank. I've got my earplugs in and decide I am going to use the float pillow. All is well, I'm in the dark and floating. I randomly kept bumping into the sides, which was somewhat distracting. But that's my own issues. Anyways, I get somewhat restless at some point and cannot seem to get back into a peaceful mind space. Then suddenly the door gets ripped open without a knock or anything. Which is horribly jarring to the senses. Apparently they forget about us. It was now 1900, almost two hours later. Isn't it their job to know if there are people in the float tanks??? Not sure how I feel about that at all. **Edit: I emailed the facility and got a crappy response, they said that they changed the times from 60 minutes to 90 minutes and that I just didnt hear the person knock on the door. I replied that even if they did change the times to 90 minutes, I was left in there for 120 minutes, which is more than 90 minutes. And the lady working stated that she was told we were already out of the tank, she didnt knock. The reply back was "oh well management will talk with staff at the next meeting about this". I think there are probably people who love this place as evidenced by how crowded it was, but as an out-of-towner, I have to say you should only come here if you're OK with talking people, lots and lots of weird men, and being spoken to condescendingly by the staff. I can't recommend this as a healing space or one that feels particularly comfortable as a woman. I was in a hurry to leave, despite major efforts to relax! Thumbs down. Writing this only to save others the experience I had. Bottom line: talking in the quiet areas and seriously crowded with men. Not healing. More of a party crowd. read more

When I went in for a massage with Zara Sluys she greeted me with the most welcoming presence. She asked me what I needed and she definitely delivered the best deep tissue massage I've ever had. I highly recommend Zara if you are looking for an effective massage that leaves you feeling relieved where you need it most. The massage therapist (whose name I unfortunately can't remember) was nice and welcoming; the massage itself was fine. This was my first experience with Everett House Healing Center (Groupon offer). I'll admit that I am perhaps too sensitive in unfamiliar situations... but I expected more warmth and better customer service from the woman at the sauna/hot tub desk. UPDATE (a few weeks later): Despite an unfriendly person at the basement desk during my first visit, I decided to go back with my spouse, to try the hot tub. This time, the person working at the desk was helpful, and showed us the different spaces in the place and explained how to use them. We spent an enjoyable hour in the hot tub and, after exploring the place further (there is a sauna and float tanks), decided that we would have to come back again. On the way out, I made an appointment for another massage (with another massage therapist than the one i had the first time), and that visit did not disappoint either. I came here with a Groupon. I spent a half day on my birthday just relaxing and enjoying my peaceful afternoon. I also had a stressful solo trip coming up and wasn't feeling 100% so Everett House was just what the Yelp Doctors ordered. I was given a tour. I was given a really nice massage by a really unimposing lady (that's my style...don't talk too much or go crazy with the pressure on an initial massage) and then spent time in the outdoor hottub with a waterfall, the sweet beach lounge chairs, the hobbit-doored sauna and showers. I had a locker with an elastic key and left my phone locked up. I really enjoyed coming here alone and during the week (I think I was there on a Wed or Thurs?) it was pretty empty and I didn't see too many naked bodies. I'd been to Common Grounds before (with a groupon and with someone) and this is pretty comparable. I loved the feel of the backyard where the pool, showers and tubs were. I've been going to Common Ground for about a year now and have always had a good experience. They are one a very few public places that have an isolation tank that you can rent by the hour. I found out about Everett House when I purchased a Groupon for a float session. What an amazing, tranquil environment! Unlike some other reviewers I found the customer service to be great. The guy at the front desk gave us a tour of the whole facility and answered all of our questions. He was super friendly and welcoming. The hot tub area with cold plunge claw-foot tubs and a fire pit was heavenly. The float tank was pretty good. The only reason I have Everett House 4 stars instead of 5 was because the tank is in a room where there are people talking nearby and the door is in no way soundproof. Even with the earplugs provided I could still hear their voices pretty clearly. I probably wouldn't do another float here, but I will most definitely be back for a soak and sauna and can't wait to check out the massage treatments. read more

Today was my second day at the Everett Healing House. I first went because of a Groupon that I was gifted for the float tank/ spa session. When I did this I was not compelled to write a review. I had a great relaxing time and had nothing really negative or positive to say. I went ahead and bought myself a 30 minute massage/ spa session on Groupon and got in immediately. I was told over the phone that I was going to have a free chiropractic examination, which was not detailed in the Groupon, so that was a nice little add on. However, my least favorite experience today was with the chiropractor. He was short, kept cutting me off, and pretty much told me that I had a bunch of problems that I needed to be seen for. It felt rushed and I felt as though he was just going through the motions of giving a free check up. Why even give one at all? It was kind of overwhelming and a whirlwind. Moving on, the massage was awesome! I upgraded to a 60 minute massage and I felt like I really worked out some kinks in my shoulder and neck. It was a very informative session and I now have some tips to take home with me until I return. Yes, I will most definitely be back. I really enjoy the clothing optional steam and sauna areas. People are very respectful and my favorite area is the meditative spa rooms. I spent 45 minutes interchanging between steam/ sauna/ shower and then hit the community hot tub after. Front desk girl with gold glasses was the sweetest. I am kind of confused by all the customer service issues because the front desk girls at the chiropractors office were super sweet as well. I experienced both a massage and a float (along with the usual soak & sauna) at Everett House. Both of my experiences were fantastic! Let me start with those additional services. After sauna-ing, I had a 60 minute deep tissue massage with Rebecca, who was absolutely amazing. I haven't had a massage in over a year and was overdue. But despite that fact, she really listened to my needs (wants?) and hit all of my problem areas with precision and just the right amount of pressure. The two biggest signs of whether or not a massage was good is if a. I fall asleep and b. when it's over I feel great. And in this exam, Rebecca passed with flying colors! What more can you ask for? I also had my first float here (60 minutes) and after reading a few reviews, I didn't know what to expect and was slightly apprehensive. I decided to give it a try and it took me a long time to get settled in, almost 30-40 minutes. (It didn't help that I was slightly hung over.) It's amazing how the water in the tank will keep your body afloat, but if you can't get truly relaxed, you can get stuck in a weird position, making the experience awkward and uncomfortable. But when you do hit that bliss point...WOW, is it something else! I think it's definitely worth a try. But if you're claustrophobic or scared of the dark (seriously!) you might want to pass. As for the rest of the facilities, as other have said (as does their website), it is CO, so be prepared. Overall, the vibe was very respectful, serene, and calming. A few people were chatting, but tried their best to keep it down, which I appreciated. Also, everything was as clean and neat as can be expected. Super weird vibe. Not a good situation at all! He was pushy and demanding about sales. He told me I had "serious neck and back problems" and told me it was going to be a lot of work to heal. He was VERY strange when he told me about my so-called problems. It was a BIG sign that he was not being honest. He then told me I need at least 2 more follow up visits, when I looked a bit shocked he said "Well I guess it depends on if you want to prioritize your health or not". DEMEANING!! My health is of great concern to me.... it is why I was there in the first place. I am way less than please with my experience and would not recommend this Dr. to anyone. I was very pleased with my experience at the Everett House. I visited for the basic 1.5hr walk-in spa hours. (sauna wet and dry, and hot tub) and wasn't let down. The facility in the basement of 2 houses is in quite residential neighborhood just off glisan. There is as much parking as you'd expect in a busy residential neighborhood, I didn't have any troubles on a Sunday evening. And note - the entrance is BETWEEN the two houses off one of the basements. I loved the "house/home" environment, I felt like I was visiting a friends house rather than a business. I enjoyed the tile work on both the hot tub outside, and shower area in each basement facility. The areas looked and smelled clean (you just never know until a week later when you have athletes foot or ring worm - dangers of public areas like this). Everyone was extremely respectful of the clothing optional rules and I never felt like I was at risk of creepiness lurking. I was happy with the price - as I've visited a few other places in town and this seemed the best bang for my buck. The monthly memberships looked reasonable and not overpriced. read more

Come with an open mind because this is a clothing optional and co-Ed health house. Groupon led me here for a 30 minute massage & an additional steam and soak. If it's your first time, check in will be in a the Basement of the chiropractor house, you'll see signs. They have you fill out 2 forms, a waiver and also areas you would like them to focus and not focus on. I wasn't given a tour or wasn't aware of where the facilities were so one star off, bc when I came to check out they told other first timers. Rachel my massage therapist was really comforting and nice to talk to. For my first massage I thought it was going to be quiet, but she was distracting me from the pain in my neck and back. Anyway, the space is small and it was crowded for a Sunday so maybe coming on a weekday where it is less crowded would've been more relaxing in the hot tub. Mask of healing or not, it's a capitalist business, and they hardly give a crap about the experience of their visitors. I have been coming here for five or six years, though less and less in the last year or so. Mainly to soak and relax in the sauna, though occasionally to get a massage. To be clear: the massage therapists have always been great at what they do-with the exception of the actual facility calling me (3 out of the 5 massages I've gotten there) before my appointment to say what I had scheduled for an hour, but they could actually only do 45 minutes of because of the scheduling, and would that be ok? Uh, no? I scheduled for an hour and would be expected to pay for an hour and get neither? I would happily call the massage therapists when not working in this facility, as they seem to be GREAT. This review is mainly, though, for the soaking areas/spa. There used to be a handful of warm, welcoming, kind attendants and people working the front desk. For whatever reason, they are long gone, hopefully on to better things. I miss them! The staff, more often than not is condescending, unhelpful, short/snapping speech, and seem a) unhappy to be working there (I get it's a job/people have crummy days, but also, I hope they're being treated well) and b) untrained in how to behave when WORKING IN A HEALING FACILITY. Customer service is a whole thing, and in a 'healing environment', it's even bigger. I used to love this place so much, would make it my one regular treat for myself, a place to care for some health issues, to connect with friends and relax . But now: -Poorly trained, probably underpaid rude staff that don't give a fuck about being welcoming -Surprise price jumps with no announcement on the main webpage or posted in the lobby. -Reports of friends leaving towels/water bottles out on benches or racks while using facilities (as is the custom), having things stolen from them, and the staff being rude, unhelpful, shaming and offering no compensation like a half hour soak, a free beverage, idk, anything to soften the blow of having something stolen from you when naked and vulnerable in your facility?? -'Cold plunges' aka communal bathtubs frequently look dirty-could use a real cold plunge pool. -Very few non-coed hours -Half the facility being closed at times for maintenance, yet paying full price. -Concerns about other visitors gets brushed off and dismissed by staff. I was nervous about a *fully clothed man* doing qigong/walking around looking at people next to the soaking pool a couple times, amongst a full crowd of nude people. Why doesn't he just use the small garden space between buildings? Why doesn't he realize that is awkward, uncomfortable and inappropriate? And why did the staff brush this concern and discomfort from visitors off and prioritize this random, clothed man? -Could use some signs for male visitors about how to not make naked strangers uncomfortable--hint: don't try to talk up a naked woman you don't know. It's uncomfortable and awkward. And more... So disappointed to be leaving this review, but after a year+ of trying to make it work, it seems some things just aren't getting better. read more

I have been having back issues for some time now and since closing my gym membership at LA Fitness I have been looking for a place where I can Hot Tub / Sauna / Steam and get an occasional massage. Last night was my first visit to the Everett House. The facilities are nice and well kept (I did see an ant near a piece of cookie in the locker room, but it was when I was getting ready to leave and I was very relaxed so in the spirit of harmony I wished him luck). First, the nudity thing: it really is really no big thing, everyone is pretty cool. I did not bring a towel and the ones they provide are small. If you are a "well fed" person like myself and plan on going naked you will need to bring a towel. The hot tub is sublime! It is outside and the yard is beautiful. While I was soaking up the experience a small white flower fell from a tree and landed in front of me - it was very Zen. The steam room has a nice thick layer of steam and the sauna was the perfect temperature. I left feeling relaxed and my back was very loose - I felt happier. I have not used the float tank or had a massage yet - but I made an appointment for one and will update this review afterwards. read more

I'm going to start by saying that this was the first time visiting this Healing Center. My boyfriend and I scheduled a couples massage for a Saturday evening. We were very excited about our date as we had a rough week and were looking forward to our much needed massages. We arrived a little early hoping to get a soak in before our massage. As we were filling out some paperwork, a nearly naked man walked through the main entry way and disappeared through a back corridor. We didn't know where he came from and thought that was very odd. The white towel he was wearing (provided by the center) was so small that it didn't wrap around him. Left me feeling uneasy, but we were up for the adventure. After checking in and receiving our tiny towels, we proceeded to the back room to find an available locker. We changed into our suits and proceeded to the backyard. The backyard setting is very pretty and appears very relaxing. We sat in the hot tub for about 25 minutes. The water was nice, not as hot as a healing tub should be, but it was still nice. We were the only two people wearing suits. We felt like several people were staring at us and that made us feel very uncomfortable and very difficult to relax. There were approx 20 people in the backyard... All naked... All shapes and size. We headed to the waiting area for our Couples Massage (by the lockers amongst more naked people). A Massage Therapist came by and took my boyfriend while I waited for someone to come get me. Finally, a very nice lady came by and we walked several flights of stairs to a tiny room for my massage. What happened to our "Couples Massage"? My therapist had a very soft, gentle touch and was moving in slow motion, while my boyfriend's massage included hot stones and deep tissue. I was pretty disappointed. The steam room was very nice. The sauna would have been great if the naked man in the corner wasn't so creepy. We were pretty disappointed in our experience and will not be returning as we didn't feel like this was a Healing Center, but a gathering spot for creepers and lonely people. I purchased an online coupon for a package service including floatation and then sauna/spa. Although I knew of Common Grounds for years and years, I never went in until this trip. I think I missed out. A lot. It was a bit of challenge to even find the entrance of spa services, but everyone there, staff and other clients, were very helpful in getting me to the right place. Everett House creates a sense of calm and relaxation from the minute you arrive. Talina Wilson, Spa Manager, greeted me and provided more than enough information of the spa/treatment process -- very friendly, and still very professional. I didn't experience any upsale of their other services, though I fully plan to go back and purchase one of their monthly packages. Their prices are extremely fair for their offerings, and made even more so when bought in bulk/subscribed. The house has a wonderful sense of community to it which appeals to me as I consider healing a communal process. The facilities are softly lit, welcoming, and very clean. -5 Horrible My daughter and I purchased a float , massage and steam room session for a evening for my husband as a birthday gift. He arrived to a location that was everything but relaxing. 1) The woman at the front desk looks up at him with a dirty look when he arrives says it would be a moment. 2) looks back up and asks what he is there for. He tells here he has an appointment for the float tank. She says that he couldn't do it needs to schedule an appointment and that they fill up fast. She suggests that he reviews the brochure so that he has a better understanding on what they do there. He decides to leave instead. 3) He calls me as he's walking out, I imediately try calling for the next 20 minutes and the phone just rings. I hope that I wasn't scammed! I now just want my money back & a apology! read more

I have been 3 times and each time disappointed. First time half the saunas were closed, but costs the same to get in and the lockers kept breaking. Second time, whenever I walked past a staff member they asked if I was checking out yet #rude. Tonight they charged me for 90 min when we stayed 75 and then two employees lectured us for being 6 min past closing time. They threatened to charge us $30 "for their time" and held our IDs for ransom while we listened to their stern talking to. I have never had such bad customer service. Overpriced and entitled. Check out ANY Korean spa in LA and it's 10x better and half as expensive. Not worth the drama. read more

A lovely, homely space in a busy city. I have been in Portland for years and hearing about Everett House, but only recently went there. I have since worked with the chiropractors, a massage therapist, and utilized the spa. In general, I would say the services are probably on the higher end for most, but I can only imagine what it costs to run this healing space in the city. Staff have been relaxed and welcoming. Practitioners have helped me increase my mobility. The spa definitely helped get me through winter and is a welcome resource for relaxation. I hope that Everett House is able to work something out with the city. It's unfortunate that a few neighbors - who get discounted services and chose to live next to a wellness center (in a big city) - are creating challenges for this sanctuary to continue offering services to the community at large. May an agreeable compromise be found amongst all parties! read more

When I'm visiting Portland I always stop at Everett House. Great massages and lovely people. It's a peaceful sanctuary set in a lovely neighborhood. Ride walk or take Lyft. Enjoy. read more

I have yet to get a massage here, but even an hour spent in the jacuzzi and steam sauna is enough to make me feel rejuvenated for the rest of the day. Totally worth the price. Comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Hope to try the flotation tanks eventually. read more

Decided to give this place a try after learning that they do a free hour of spa time if it's your birthday and we were so happy we did! The facilities were clean and relaxing. I will mention that my husband and I felt a little out of place as the only ones not soaking in the buff, so if being nude in public isn't your thing, I'd find another spa to go to. We just decided to join the crowd! Everyone was very respectful, the staff was friendly and I loved that I was able to get a tea at their little coffee house. We will definitely be going back here again! read more

After the election in November a sign began to appear in the windows of businesses that proclaimed "We Welcome all races all religions all countries of origin genders all sexual orientations We stand with you. You are we safe here." As a disabled person I reached out to the designer and suggested that since Trump had mocked a disabled reporter the previous week that "All Abilities" might be a good addition. She assured me that the next printing would include it...and it did! So I feel a little flutter every time I see the updated sign around town. When I arrived at Everett House last night, I saw a printed version of the sign taped to the gate. I relaxed a little. I have a service dog that serves as an early warning detection before I am going to pass out, the worst of which incident happened to be at a hot tub in 2010 so the service dog has truly been a miracle for increasing my mobility and allowing me to go places without needing a human escort. But as I walked up to the counter to pay, I was told that service dogs were not welcome. I explained how federal law works around this issue and that the dog did not need to be in the water, she would monitor my vitals from the side as she has done at half a dozen hot tubs before. The employee called her supervisor who also did not know the law and began to lecture me about health codes and allergies and other things that do not pertain to service dogs. She suggested that I just tie up the dog outside of the facility. I explained that this was unsafe and pointed out that their business had specifically hung a sign saying that "All Abilities...we stand with you. You are welcome here." Perhaps they hadn't considered that the business was not holding up to such a statement would require education and training. She began Googling and calling her boss, who did not know the law either. She asked me which services I was interested in. I said that I had not visited in over a decade and was not familiar with their current services. Rather than outline what was available, she began outlining where the dog, and by extension myself, was not welcome. Her solution was to tell me that I was not welcome until the management had a chance to review the law, which is unfortunately not how things work. I explained that I would report this incident and that there is a fine for violating these federal laws. She relented and suggested that I could use some common areas. She pointed out how well-behaved my dog is and suggested that if the dog was always so well-behaved that it shouldn't be an issue but she would need to see the paperwork, again suggesting that she was not familiar with the ADA rules. At this point, 30 minutes had passed of what was truly a waste of everyone's time. It's not my job as a service dog owner to explain the law to a business. The supervisor offered some very awkward quasi-apologies about how she had probably made me feel very unwelcome but did not offer any compensation for the difficulty that they had caused. Oddly, when you visit a chain establishment, they know the law intimately, as is their responsibility. After all of this, My partner felt more comfortable leaving than supporting them, so we did. If you aren't going to make all abilities welcome, then don't pretend that you do in your marketing. Mistakes can be forgiven but the pill tends to be easier to swallow with some compensation for a hassle. read more

I enjoy the amenities here, locker with lock, multiple tubs (bathtubs and a large hot tub) 3 saunas both wet and dry, beautiful clean spaces, whimsical design. However if you want to call in advance or book a service I would recommend starting months in advance as they, in my case, rarely answer their phones, do not call back, and their website is difficult if you want to pin a specific day down. read more

I visited the spa facilities on Wednesday evening this week. It was busy, with close to an even split of men and women, mostly young-ish (20's-40's), all body types and orientations. With one or two exceptions it was all nude use. The vibe was friendly and relaxed - no staring pervs, which surprised me as I expected a few from some of the comments. The basement saunas/showers/steam room felt slightly DIY and unrefined, but they were clean and it kind of lent to the relaxed feel of the place. The hot tub did get a little crowded at times. I enjoyed it and will definitely go again if I pass through Portland. read more
