I stopped in for lunch. The lunch menu is pretty much burgers and chicken sandwiches. I heard they were known for steak, so I ordered the tenderloin sandwich. The steak was seasoned really well, but looked small on the large bun they served it on. I wasn't asked how I wanted the steak cooked, but I was ok with the medium rare that came out. I also liked that the fresh cut fries were cut differently. The potatoes were cut into slices, then the slices were cut in half, and then they were fried. They weren't seasoned much, but ketchup helped. I also had a cup of baked French Onion soup. The broth had more flavor than the French Onion soup I've had at a French bistro near the lake in Milwaukee. I asked to see the dinner menu because the lunch menu was pretty basic. The dinner menu was also pretty safe. Two cuts of steak served 8 ways. The smashed garlic steak looked the most appetizing. The rest of the menu was chicken and salad and apps. I have to learn to lower expectations when I dine outside of Milwaukee, and maybe just stop dining outside of Milwaukee. The bar is set too high here and I unfairly try to hold other restaurants to the same standards. The Farmstead is very solid, but not unique or adventurous or exciting, which I look for when I dine out. They have a long wait (no reservations), steakhouse prices, bad service, and average steaks. The experience leaves a lot to be desired. For example, if you're charging $50+ for a plate, the least you could do is have a butter knife for the rolls. I recently had the pleasure of revisiting this establishment and I'm pleased to inform you that it continues to offer stellar steak preparation and fine cuisine. Fortunately the menu is the same, but now any steak can be ordered with the smashed garlic preparation. The smashed garlic preparation is extraordinary and I highly recommend ordering any steak this way. The same sides including sugar snap peas, seven layer salad, Cesar salad, and mashed potatoes are available. The waitress informed me that French onion soup has not been served since COVID. Last month the restaurant was practicing precautions and serving on the back porch. I don't know when the dining room will reopen. I like the country farmhouse atmosphere, but when the porch is closed seating is more limited. read more

I love this place. This is a go-to steakhouse in the Ozaukee County Area. Whenever we visit, we have to order the steak sliders with homemade pickles as a appetizer. The haystack is pretty decent as well. Also, the seven layer salad as your starter/side is a must. I've ordered the seven layer salad with steak added many times in the past. Its a fairly large salad, so bring your appetite. But what really brings me back, is the "garlic glaze" that you can have put on all of the steaks. It's delicious and keeps areas the vampires well. Fantastic! A wonderful experience here. New York strip with the bone in was possibly the best steak I have had in a long time, at least that I can remember. What a strange experience. There was a sign on the street but no sign on or near the building. We were seated on the porch....pretty rustic and kind of dirty. Waitress didn't appear to know what gluten free was. Salad was served in a to go styrofoam container. Food was just ok and a bit over priced. Chicken and vegetables was pretty tasteless. Cod fish and chips was ok but hit my stomach like a brick. We left wondering how this place got all the good ratings...maybe inside was nicer? It was our first time to Farmstead and it had it's pluses and minuses. The ambiance and look of the inside of the restaurant was a complete selling point for us. It was like a little homey lodge that you would want to go to in the dead of winter to warm up and have a hearty meal. Our waitress was good and was quick to check on us. I will say it's hard to find the actual front door of the restaurant. We actually went in the back. There is a sign on the road where to turn, but there is no sign on the actual restaurant. Odd. They do not take reservations and we got there about 6:30 on a Thursday night, and had a 30 minute wait - which wasn't bad. We started with the french onion soup - which was fine - but nothing great. I had the farm bites - which are small portions of steak on bread with a pickle. I then had a side of garlic mashed potatoes. I really had hoped for more garlic on both - given the reviews. The farm bites were okay - just nothing great. My husband had the coconut chicken - which he, too thought was fine. If you want a hearty flavorful steak that is slightly out of the norm from traditional steak houses you will not be disappointed at Farmsted. My dining experience was great. Our server Kelly was very attentive and gave great suggestions. I had the Four Season steak entree and I enjoyed every single bite. Next time I go I will make sure to wear pants with an elastic waist band because I will need a lot more room to let my belly expand from all the delicious food they have to offer. Hands down one of the best places to eat in Cedarburg. I almost want to give a bad review just so no one else come to this place and takes my table! Most people don't know about this gem. It's intimate and has multiple dishes for vegetarians that aren't "pasta primavera"... Love it. read more

Abridged version: Don't miss out on this Cedarburg gem, but get there early or you will be waiting...up to 45 minutes at peak times...no reservations. Get the steak! Cannot stress this enough. Get the 7 layer or famous caesar salad. If you have enough people to share with, get at least a half order of the haystack. Also, if you can save room for dessert, definitely try it out. The raspberry gelato with a chocolate shell is surprisingly satisfying. Do not hesitate to sit on the patio. It is just as romantic as the indoor seating and extremely comfortable. Oh yeah...and try the house stuffed blue cheese olives in a dirty martini! Love this restaurant! One reason is because it is clearly coveted by the locals and a little off the tourist path. While I'm a tourist, I appreciate the break from that crowd and a bit of Cedarburg authenticity. In fact, we like it so much we went for both lunch and dinner in the same day! Our waitress, Chris (Kris?), pulled a double that day. She was our waitress at both lunch and dinner. She had some time to chat at lunch and answered all our questions about the area. She was happy to make recommendations on the menu. She said the steak is where it's at, and she was definitely spot on! I loved the 7 layer salad with added steak. Steak was charred on the outside and perfectly medium rare on the inside. The salad has this amazing cream dressing that makes it just the right amount of sweet. The bacon and cheese complimented the vegetables perfectly. Generous serving was enough to share with extra to take home so long as you have another dish. We had the open faced Walleye sandwich. It was ok, but nothing compared to that salad with steak. Now the "fries" that came with the Walleye were a pleasant surprise. They were actually perfectly cooked potato wedges, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was so refreshing to not have something frozen and deep fried for once. You could taste the freshness and love that went into preparing these. Back for dinner and arrived early at 5PM to secure a table. We asked the hostess if we could sit at the bar until things got busier. She was so sweet to accommodate this request and grab us for a table once they started to fill up. She gave us her favorite table which was tucked in the back part of the restaurant. It was so cozy and romantic. At the bar we ordered a couple of dirty martinis. They came with the most amazing blue cheese stuffed olives I've ever had. I had to ask the bartender about them...they were that good. She informed me they hand stuff them in-house! No wonder they were overflowing with blue cheese. Genius!! If you like blue cheese olives, they can't be missed. That's a considerable amount of extra work and it goes to show what a gem this restaurant is that they've been doing this for as long as the bartender could remember. We had the steak bites and a half haystack to start off. A haystack is a pile of fried onions and boy were they mind blowing. Be careful though, the half order is quite a lot. Chris was kind enough to warn us. See my picture for an idea. We had their chicken special for our main entrée. It was captain crunch fried chicken with a side of BBQ. We ordered it with the garlic baked potato and the soup special, kale and sausage. Soup was spectacular as was the potato. My husband and I were a little disappointed by the chicken. The concept had so much potential, but alas, the breading didn't taste like the cereal at all and the portion was quite small. It looked like two slightly over-sized chicken nuggets. The tangy BBQ sauce complimented the sweetness of the breading perfectly, but we were left feeling slightly disappointed. I wish I would have tried the rosemary chicken at the same price point, $16.00. I have a feeling I would have gotten a larger helping of chicken as it is a regular menu item, not the special. Or I could have taken Chris's advice and gotten another one of their fabulous steak dishes! On the way out we passed through their outdoor seating area that is only open on the weekends (I believe). It was beautiful! I was picturing a typical patio, but this was a screened in area with lovely seating and romantic lighting as well as its own bar area. This place is not easy to find but worth it!! It's an old farmhouse converted to a restaurant. You turn down a road that looks like it's s road/alley to apartments. No sign. We got here at 8:30 and had 40 minute wait for two. Thirteen tables and a tiny kitchen. This place is amazing. Sat at the bar and talked to the bartender while we waited. Such nice people. Fun to watch the food being prepared. They have it down to an art. The inside of the place is exposed brick with a wood beam ceiling and farm implements on the wall. So cool. The 7 layer salad and French onion soup are outstanding. You can choose either to come with your dinner. French onion soup was a one dollar up charge. I got the walleye with mashed potatoes and snap peas. The walleye was lightly breaded - light, not fishy really perfect. My husband wanted the crab legs but they ran out of the special. . He ended up getting the top sirloin. He said it was a little dry and too garlic/salty. The hand made steak fries were very good. Will definitely be back!! Even though mask mandates and social distancing rules have been lifted, we still were not allowed to sit indoors at the restaurant which means we endured the outside covered patio, complete with a visit from a squirrel who has made her home in the roof. The service was very good, but some of our food came out in styrofoam containers (salads and apps) and some came out on real plates (steaks). We learned this was due to a dishwashing machine break down in the kitchen. There were several things on the menu that were not available, like fish and the French Onion soup, which was disappointing. However, the salads and apps we could order were good. The steaks were good, but not great. A little tough and chewy in some places, which we have never experienced at the Farmstead before. Overall, it seems like this restaurant was hit hard by Covid and needs a little more time to get back up to their normal service. We will revisit again in a few months.
