I went with a few friends for happy hour and although their menu for happy hour is very limited it was still pretty OK. I had a few different sushi rolls but decided to try the blue crab fried rice from the regular menu. I have to say that it was awesome! LOVED IT! I also had a "The fish Martini" ( i think that's what it was called) and it was fruity and delicious. The place is a typical sushi restaurant, dim lighting and great decor. The service was OK, our waiter was in training and made a few mistakes, but we gave him the benefit of the doubt since he was new. The food was good, and lunch time was very dead, probably a weekend thing. As a response to the lack of people there was only one person working the bar and tables. She was bogged down, but was very attentive and answered questions we had about the menu as well as the surrounding area (there was a bakery nearby). We ordered the truffle fries, Rodeo Roll and Pork Katsu. The rodeo roll was spicy, just the way I like it. It contained imitation crab, shrimp, avocado, jalapeño, and spicy tuna. It was very filling and lit my mouth up. The pork Katsu was good, the waitress mentioned people didn't like the curry but... that's the whole point of the dish. The breading on both the pork and tempura veggies was crisp, and curry was full of potatoes and carrots. The one issue was truffle fries, maybe I ordered it incorrectly, but our fries just had a spicy seasoning, toasted sesame seeds, and bits of nori. Not the traditional "truffle" oil or taste which I was expecting. Overall, pretty normal experience, nothing that would make me choose this place over another spot in Chinatown that's more affordable. I had the Berrylicious Ginger drink (Blackberries and strawberries muddled,Tito's Vodka, agave nectar, fresh lemon juice,Gosling's Ginger Beer), and found that the ground fruit clogged my straw frequently. I should slap myself for not reviewing this earlier, as myself and my critic crew were the first customers during the soft-opening (for those not in the know, the soft opening is a tradition in restaurants where you open but do not advertise it, only those in the know go, or random walk-ins). The food here is great, the dishes are served wonderfully, and the sushi masters are all trained by one of the country's best sushi chef masters because the owner cares enough to make sure they are well trained. Jimmy N.'s experience is NOT the norm. For the non-suhsi eater, there is plenty to have here on the menu that well whet your appetite. I flew to Houston for a concert and a mini vacation. I was only their for three nights. Sushi is hands down my favorite food. So I went on Google and searched sushi near me. This is how I discovered this amazing Sushi spot. The fish looks nice from the outside, but once you enter it's even better. The restaurant was clean and well organized. I wasn't greeted immediately when I walked in because the hostess was talking, but within five minutes someone else approached and seated me. I went alone, but I was still able to sit in a nice booth. My waitress was polite and had wonderful suggestions on what I should try. The menu has so much to offer and I honestly wanted to order it all. The drink was perfect sweet, but also could taste the alcohol. The soup was great, amazing seasoning and a lot of mushrooms just the way I like it. Blue crab rice! Hands down amazing, the sauce on the shrimp a little heat but for sure sweet! My friend and I decided to take midtown for the night and came across The Fish. Due to my past experiences, I was hesitant to try this restaurant and wanted to play it safe by going to a pizza restaurant. However, I'm so glad I decided to give this place a try! Upon entering the restaurant, the ambiance is very romantic. The dim lighting and the layout is amazing! Luckily, my friend reserved out table and we sat next to window where we can see midtown. Anyways, the server recommended "The Godzilla" roll. And I'm so glad he recommended it. Each bite of the Godzilla roll was amazing. A hint of some kind of herb with jalapeño and avocado! Delicious! BTW, they offer a variety of drinks. I had their new drink called Summer something. It was mixed with vodka, strawberry, basil (I think) and other ingredients. Like the simple name, this place serves decent sushi but nothing really stands out despite the price. You're paying for the rent of the nice location and the trendy atmosphere. Based on the quality of the food, I had assumed the restaurant's name was "Fish" instead of "THE fish". Yum, I love this place. I have always come for their happy hours so this review will mainly be able the happy hour menu! So they have HH until 7pm daily and I believe all day on Sundays. They have some of their main rolls on the HH menu which I usually order - Tiger Eye being one that I order often. Also they have a few different appetizer choices on there as well - spicy edamame, gyoza... and some others! Like I said, I usually stick to the HH menu for the value, but they do offer tons of other rolls and even entrees if you wish to come here for a meal. As for the ambiance - it's pretty dimly lit inside, good for an intimate date. They have the sushi bar at the back where the rolls are prepared and you can see from your table. Good restaurant! Great location! Food: Have visited this location on several occasions. Food is well prepared, fresh, and enough to fill up. Have tried calamari and ahi poke as appetizers and continue to be favorites. Sushi roll options are extensive and have selected several since first visiting this location with no disappointment. Drinks: This restaurant offers a full bar with cocktails, sake, beers, and wines as other selections. During our visits, we opted for lychee martinis. If you like a nice flavored and strong drink, I would recommend this one. Service: Since visiting this location for the first time, our service has always been great with the exception of this last visit. When entering, the hostess stated there were no tables available but that there was seating in the bar area. We were seated in the bar and waited more than necessary before being offered drinks by the chef in the sushi bar area. Sushi chef took over as our server and took our order for food as well. After a while, the person who was supposed to be our server approached and apologized for the confusion. We asked for our check when finished and were given a check which included our food and the people next to us. We really enjoyed our dinner at The Fish in Midtown Houston. Between us, we had a seaweed salad, cucumber salad, Miso Soup, Mushroom Miso soup, surf and turf roll, hot rock beef, and we ended it all with mochi ice cream in the flavors of mango, espresso, and green tea. My only issue is with the hot rock beef. I've had this at other restaurants before, but this was different. At other places, the beef is cut is really thin and cooks really quickly on the rock. However, at The Fish, the pieces of beef were a bit thick and before I was done eating, my rock had cooled and had to be reheated. Aside from that, it was an enjoyable experience. We hope to return (and I'll probably opt for something else). We also noticed their crazy happy hour menu...even on Sundays!!
