Great spot for sushi! This place is so hip, and trendy. It's great for date night, although it can get pretty loud inside during the weekend. The location is just walking distance from other bars, so it's easy to have dinner and walk over to a different place. For an appetizer I recommend the beef ribeye rolls, which is thinly sliced meat rolled with an avocado inside topped with teriyaki sauce. So delicious! Also recommend dynamite shrimp. They also have reverse happy hour specials which include a short (but good) food menu. The sushi is great, I have not had a disappointing roll. Definitely would recommend this place! read more

The Fish in Midtown is another decent place in midtown to have sushi, drinks or grab a quick lunch. My coworkers and I have been here on several occasions, mostly for lunch. We never left with bad experience. Their bento box came with general portion. My fav is the Katsu Curry. There were so many things that came with it -- California rolls, vegetable tempura, salad, either dumpling or some appetizer that I can't recall. Some of my coworkers couldn't finish it. The taste was pretty decent as well. Tempura batter was not too thick, and the Katsu curry sauce was not too salty. The service was alright and the price was not bad. I think their bento box was around $12-14. To me, this is a good place for lunch. read more

I was seated at a booth by a big window where I had a nice view of people walking their cute dogs. Later I was greeted by our very nice waiter Kevin. He was super attentive, checked up on us frequently and made sure to refill our drinks. The food was delicious, with the crab puffs being my favorite. I also had the salmon, albacore, yellowtail and escolar nigiri; they tasted fresh and had very nice textures, especially the salmon! French fries were well seasoned and came in a good portion. I went there with my husband for a quick dinner ! We just moved to Houston so we are looking for the perfect sushi place and people recommended The Fish in the Midtown area. We were seated and greeted straight away, the lady gave us time to check the menus and checked on us in a good frequency. We ordered a lot of different dishes, sashimi and ell nigiri. The raw fish things were very good but all their fried stuff was not! Price was ok. Sushi is kinda on the expensive side. I was Pretty sure I previously posted a review on this place and obviously I have not. I have been here probably a dozen times and have always sat outside, great people watching, covered Ana comfortable ( I very much wish they would put something to help with the flies, even if it's just a fan.) they have the best dressing for their salad, sushi has always been fresh and they offer a very good lunch menu/ portion at a very good price. Some of the worst sushi I've ever had in my life. Believe me, it looks good to the eye but the dishes failed to perform. They all lacked good flavor composition and the ingredients just didn't go together well at all. Ambiance: 5! It's casual but classy. The lighting is perfect. Good quality TVs to watch a game but their placement is so that it doesn't take away from the ambiance of the dining area. Sushi bar with an aquarium (hashtag heart eyes). There's an outdoor patio if you're fearless (not my ideal locale for a patio considering the homeless population and bumbling frat boys around) but hey you do you. Food: 4; the spicy salmon is significantly better than the spicy tuna. Their "spicy" is a dry rub on the rice rather than a spicy sauce most places use. It packs a kick! Their specialty rolls are delicious although I've only had Shoi, M&M, fiery and one other. The gyoza was good (but I've literally never said otherwise for any restaurant or frozen bags ever). Price: 4; This visit was a happy hour visit and ugh- so great! Our other go-to is Oishi and the wait is significantly shorter here (and it's much closer to my house). Oh and the bar menu and hh drinks are more extensive here too. But Oishi is cheaper (duh). Rolls off the HH menu are $5-6. House wine was $5. I'd say the value was great (not the best in houston but very very good). Service: 4; we came on a Thursday during reverse HH and it was packed. Regardless, we were seated immediately and our waitress was checking on us as much as possible. Our drink refills and my second glass of wine didn't come out until after we finished dinner but that was fine- we were enjoying ourselves and could tell she was very busy. When we left, every table was taken including the patio so I would suggest coming right on time for reverse HH at 8 like we did and you'll be seated immediately! I feel like midtown is a hard area to find good value with delicious food and nice ambiance. Something's got to give with an environment like that. But not here! I will be back. I had such high expectations for this place!! Like I'm extremely disappointed in our service :( We came in right at 3pm Sunday and it was DEAD. our hostess sat us, and didn't even tell us it was happy hour nor did our waiter, we just happened to read it on the menu. We took some time to look over what we wanted, and ordered drinks, four rolls off the HH menu, unagi sushi, the rocket combo, and the Kobe Rock. We ordered our food, and waited. Another table was seated behind us, ordered after us, and got their food before us. It took over 40 minutes for our rolls and the rocket combo to come out.... way too slow for such a dead restaurant. Literally we could count how many people were in the restaurant. I just want to make it know that I have been to many places that offer cooking meat on a hot stone, and NEVER has it took close to a hour to "heat the stone." We asked the waiter what was taking so long for the Kobe rock and he said he would check on it. I watched him and I saw him punch things into computer and print a receipt and go to the back. I'm pretty positive he forgot to put the order in.. so we waited a little more.. then I just ended up asking did he forget to put the order in. He said they were heating the stone and it takes long to do so but he'd check again. By now our food was done! I also will reiterate, it's not like they are cooking the food, it's just a hot stone. And ALSO if it takes so long, he should have said when we ordered that it'll come out a hour after the rest of our meal was out, or there should be a warning in the menu. That poor excuse leads me to believe that he never really put the order in. I guess they didn't even "heat the stone" because we ended up just cancelling it. Following COVID-19 guidelines, tables were spaced out and they had germ x at the front door. In the bathroom I thought I was washing my hands with soap till I realized it was mouthwash . This place has always existed in midtown as far as I can remember. I never stepped in there until my friends were asking where to eat dinner one night. I suggested this place because we have a friend that works here so I said lets go pay her a visit. It was nice walking in as we were walked to the large table in the back. We browsed through the menu and found lots of great choices to choose from. Our friend suggested some items for us to try and we loved it all. The brussel sprouts are the way to go! We also had lobster crab puffs and gyoza. For my entree, I decided to get a chirashi bowl without rice and a Poseidon roll. It was all fresh and delicious. I paired my dinner with a lychee martini. I wasn't ready for that martini because it was really strong! I took my time to drink it and I bet the lychee was soaking up all the alcohol. Overall we enjoyed our night in the atmosphere, with awesome service, and great food. Thanks to our friend, we were able to meet her staff as they came by our table. I had "the fish" roll. It was very good, just a tiny bit of spice with the candied jalapeño. My son had the black widow roll - YUM. That's what I will get next time. We also had some salmon, tuna and eel nigiri - all very good. My husband had the Rocket combo and was very pleased. We started with the clear mushroom soup - hot and tasty. read more

I did not enjoy any part of my experience here. I was with a pretentious, self-aggrandizing douchebag that called himself an entrepreneur and he name-dropped this place to make it sound like as a total baller, he knew the hippest spots in town. Yet I ran into two different tables of people I went to school with and I would not describe any of them as total ballers or entirely hip and with it. It was pretty much a generic "no, I will not eat at Quizno's for the third time this week, pick something else!" lunch solution we have all had to come up randomly at one point or another during our white collar careers. Waitress was of the increasingly common standard ilk of "I wanted to do something else with my life rather than bring you food" and that really just dripped down her face and exploded all over the table. The salad looked like an octopus threw it together, complete mismatch and odd proportions on everything. Sushi was low quality, putting it succinctly and the nicest way I can. I was hosting a meet up of Asian Dining group. The location was great in the Midtown area. But it might be hard to find a free parking spot. It was on Sunday November 28th at 7pm. This place is a solid 3 all around considering service and food quality. I had a Travelzoo voucher that I used for dinner for 2. We had the hot rock beef, calamari, salmon sashimi, spider roll, spicy tuna roll, and two other rolls that I can't remember the name of. We also shared a vanilla tempura ice cream at the end of the meal which was fantastic - the highlight of the meal. Do. NOT. Skip. Dessert. The hot rock beef was decent, though it was my first time eating it and I had no idea what I was doing. I would've asked the waiter but he dropped off the plate and promptly ran away so I winged it......ok, I also googled it. The sashimi was fresh and delicious and served on what I thought was a very large bed of daikon...however it turned out to be about a handful of daikon over a bunch of crushed ice. For the portion size, I would definitely prefer more daikon, beet or carrot to accompany the sashimi so it feels more like an entree. The calamari and rolls were all pretty forgettable...except for the fact that I could not find any avocado in my spider roll! Boooooooooooo!!!! I have to note that the restrooms are in an incredibly awkward location to the kitchen. It's a blind corner so, as you exit the restroom, you can't see the waiter with the tray running towards the expecting table. I had a front row seat to view this nonsense and I saw 1 collision and 3 almost-collisions just in the time that we were there...and the place wasn't even that busy! Put a mirror up, please. Overall the food was ok and the service was a little slow. I'd probably come back here for happy hour or Sunday Funday when the drink prices are a little more reasonable. I came here on a Thurs night with a group of four. We were told to make reservations since we were coming at 8:30, and I presume it's b/c they expect a crowd for their reverse happy hour. They still let us pick where we sat...I'd advise not sitting in the back because the music was ear-deafening (for these old ears :P). So, I had a groupon ($40 worth of food for $20), which helped, but almost not enough! Alcohol wasn't included in the groupon, but since it was reverse happy hour, drink prices were down on domestic beers and apple and "pome" martinis. I had the pome martini, which was basically a subtly spiked pomegranate juice. For $5...eh...not worth getting again. I started with a miso soup and seaweed salad. The miso soup ($3) came with mushrooms, which was good. The seaweed salad rates as the worst I've had. I felt like I was eating wet dog...there was just a horrible aftertaste I've never encountered when eating it elsewhere. For $5 I would definitely NOT advise getting it...ugh! My bf and I decided to split a couple rolls...I picked millenium (spicy tuna, peppercorn tuna, yada yada) and he picked a new roll, the surf and turf. The millenium was good, but oh man...the surf and turf was so delicious! It had strips of seared kobe beef (supposedly) on the outside with a chunk of lobster and avocado inside, it had a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper on top. It came with two dipping sauces--some sort of dark soy sauce (?) and a light green basil sauce. The creamy green colored basil infused/pesto/whatever sauce was a huge WIN paired with the roll. I tried the pesto sauce with the regular rolls but that was not exactly yummy. We liked the surf and turf roll so much (as did our companions) that we ended up ordering another one. I tried a few pieces of our companions' rolls: lickety split and the caterpillar roll, but they were less exciting. The rolls here have about eight small pieces and most cost between $10 and $15 so it's definitely on the pricier side. That's a bit of a turn-off. Three rolls split between two people would probably be an ample amount of food. Maybe with a miso soup or edamame thrown in there, too. So, imo, pluses are definitely the miso soup, reverse happy hour and happy hour prices and the surf and turf roll. Cons are the prices, seaweed salad and martinis. I think that averages out to an A-OK. read more
