We love the food here! The grits are the best, really creamy and so good. Incredible biscuits are served with every meal and there is apple butter on the table which is also incredible. Loved the atmosphere here to start with! So cute and different. Our server was awesome as well. The food started out with a latte and while I love coffee this one tasted more like milk. For my actual meal I got the wake up burger and a side of the chicken sausage gravy. The burger was delicious and it had two patties, more than enough bacon and an overhard egg, it tasted so good and was the perfect brunch meal. The burger comes with a side of potatoes and I dipped those in the chicken sausage gravy. Now the chicken sausage gravy was to die for and tasted just the same as regular sausage gravy if not better. I will def order a side of it everytime I go. Another thing I tried was the Hangover Hash, it seemed different and exciting so. It wasn't as good as I thought it would be, it was edible but it tasted a little funky. I think it was just not my taste. But it had a taco/fajita type flavoring which I think threw me off a little bit, but the chicken chorizo tasted well with it. Haven't had a bad meal- or service- here. It can be crowded on weekends, because Gainesville, but I have made this my "take the kids for a fun hooky day" restaurant and it never disappoints. On my latest visit, our server Gio was very sweet with my kid and made him feel very grown up and cool. Quality has really fell since I first came here 5 years ago. The vinyl table covers are old and worn and wiped with a dirty rag so things on the table are wet. There was a strong smell of urine or just dirty floors, whatever the smell was it was pretty unappetizing. That could have been overlooked but the food was nothing short of disappointing too. Our grits were congealed from cooling down too much and the dishware were dirty. My fork stank of dirty dish water and the coffee was gas station quality. My buscuit was surprisingly mushy and turns out the dough needed more time in the oven, but we just wanted to leave at that point. Food prep and service was also on the slow side. I came with my mom for brunch but we left with our stomachs turned. Definitely not the nice diner quality it started out with years ago, and it has obviously slipped downhill. Newer to the town, I was always told about this place. I was excited to be able to finally try their food! My friend and I decided to go there today for brunch. I have a small service dog, who is trained to do non-verbal alerts. Him being 14 lbs, I cannot get his alerts when he is on the ground. Once we were seated outside, the hostess that we were having a great conversation with previously, came over and tapped my friend on the shoulder and told us that my dog could not be on the booth. I informed her how he alerts and why he always need to be where I can see him. She then said "mm k" and walked away. I knew there was going to be an issue soon. About 5 minutes later a man that worked there approached us, and tapped me on the shoulder. And again I was given issue about my service dog. I again, for the third time, explained about how my dog alerts and why I need him by me. He then threatened to get the manager. That's when we decided we were no longer playing these games, and decided to leave due to this continuing harassment. This is the first time I have ever had this issue at a restaurant in Gainesville. It's very clear to me that they are not aware of my rights with my service dog, how service dogs work, and they are very not service dog friendly - if at all. Huge disappointment for me, as I was so excited to finally go there. We will not be back. read more

I am leaving one star because of poor customer service. My mom invited me to meet her at flying biscuit. My mom is a semi pleasant older lady with bad knees and she has a hard time getting around and out of the house. My mom arrived 5-10 minutes before I arrived and asked for a table. The hostess indIcated there was a table available but since I was not present my mom would have to wait......my mom asked to sit at the table because of her knees (it's hard to big get up once seated). They refused to seat her...even through there were several open tables and my mom assured them I was down the street. The hostess stated there was some rule about all parties have to be present. I would understand rule if the party was a large party but....anyway my mom felt dismissed and embarrassed (she really struggles to get up). The Flying Biscuit sits firmly at the top of the list as a consistently solid, affordable option for any group of people looking to get stuffed. The Space Quite far from campus, you can find Flying Biscuit over near the Thornebrook Village area northwest of campus. The cafe sits in a plaza-type area, so ample parking and plenty of before/after distractions if you find a long wait or want to waddle off some of the biscuits you inhaled. The inside does have a bar area for immediate seating, "first come first served"-style, and pretty ample amounts of booths and tables for large crowds. The decor is bright and welcoming, but can get a bit loud when they are getting a surge of business. The Service Those who have been will say: "Flying Biscuit has a terrible wait". You might think that Flying Biscuit manages to fend off some of the college students and their grandmothers, nieces, uncles, friends, dogs, etc. looking to visit for graduation/holidays/other. They do not. The truth is that Flying Biscuit has a huge following and manages to fill a rather large place for hours during prime time (between 10am - 1pm), so they are forced to make people take a number. Even with the simple fact of a building only having so much room to work, they still take extra effort to help with waits by offering call ahead seating services, which include text alerts to keep you updated on where you are in line. Add to this the free coffee they continuously provide the eager eaters and I'd say they did their fair share. As for when you're seated, I have found the staff to be extremely nimble when handling the nonstop groups coming for their mimosas and meals. I have been quite a few times and never get snubbed for refills of precious java or agua. The Food Been around the block with their breakfast menu and I have never walked away disappointed with my plate. I consistently find that the food comes cooked correctly, with the occasionally luke-warm or undercooked egg. Most certainly, though, you can expect a quality meal with portions that will no doubt lead to a quick cat nap afterward. Some key notes from my brunch adventures: -Creamy Dreamy Grits (A): I love them. They're rich, smooth, and incredibly decadent. Simple grits get elevated at Flying Biscuit by a mile. -Moon-Dusted Potatoes (B): Bit of rosemary make these quite nice, but I tend to find them too cool when they get to my table. -French Toast (B+): If you want to win brunch and wreck your sweet tooth, dive into the honey anglaise and raspberry drizzle that soak into these savory warm slices. Final Thoughts Prices are a tiny bit higher for the normal breakfast items, so expect $10 or more a head even if you're only after grits, eggs, and bacon. Also the coffee outside is free, but come inside for more with your meal and that's an added $2 on the bill. Here is another restaurant favorite that I owe to Yelp for a great recommendation. We were visiting my girlfriends parents in the small city of High Springs, FL which is next to Gainesville,FL. Now on average my mother in law cooks a feast for breakfast and dinner when we visit but they had to prep for a wedding so we told her not to worry we would go into town for breakfast. I am glad we did ! I have bookmarked this location just in case for a moment like this. We arrive to the Flying Biscuit which is in a small plaza off the main road. Upon arrival we noticed a big line outside and told our selves "man we should have called ahead" nevertheless we took a stab at the wait. Nice little spot, with outdoor seating in the front and decor to make you feel cozy. The hostess tells us it's about 20 minute wait. This wasn't bad at all so we decided to stick around and right around the 20 minute mark we were seated. Inside of the restaurant was very colorful and spacious. The waiter makes his introduction and gives us a sample of his favorites and explains the restaurant is very biscuit oriented, meaning everything comes with a biscuit! I think to myself "I am game" !!! I ordered the Eggs Benedict and a side order of Biscuit with hearty gravy. I was really taken back by the amount of food you receive. The Eggs Benedict was very delicious ! It was a great spin to this classic, the center it with a Biscuit with peppers, onions, and poached egg with creamy sauce and cheese on top. Everything paired amazing together! The egg was perfectly cooked, the biscuit was soft and flaky and the plate comes with creamy dreamy grits. The grits were very good, soft and with good texture! Most excellent biscuits (though for my taste they could lose the white sugar sprinkled on the top). Otherwise, flaky, fresh, flavorful, and huge. Others have described the happy-making decor, so I won't add anything other than to say that Yes! it does lift the spirits to have lots of bright, colorful spaces. We arrived about 9:45 and must have been between rushes, because we had no trouble getting a table (though the place was jumping by the time we left). Spouse ordered a Southern Scramble, and decreed the spicy collard greens an A+ addition to his eggs. I had one of their weekly specials - a scramble with penne pasta, eggs, spinach, 'shrooms, and spicy sausage. In both cases, our most excellent server, Mary, asked us how we wanted the eggs, and we said scrambled very lightly. They weren't - in fact they were pretty well totally scrambled, but at least brown and pilly and overdone like you sometimes get in a scramble. So, close enough; we were happy. Overall, we had a great time, service was super. The unsweet tea was terrific. So - why not five stars? Ah yes, the dreamy, creamy grits. I think there must be sour cream in them, nothing tastes that creamy and yummy without it. Spouse and I are total grits-lovers, having lived various parts of the South for over 20 years. We do, however, have a personal preference for coarser grits (I know, I know). That alone wouldn't have cost them a star, but . . . what did it was . . . the lumps. Spouse found small lumps in almost every bite. I encountered only a couple of small lumps, but was finally put off by two nickle-sized lumps, not a fun thing to encounter mid-bite. If you're going to make grits one of your signature dishes, you need to deal with the lumps. So, four stars overall - not bad. There are lots of other things on the menu we want to try, so we'll definitely return and recommend that you do, too. Sometimes you just have to take your lumps as you find them.. PS no reservations, but they have signs reminding you to phone ahead so you can get on the list, which presumably should cut down on your wait during busy times. I've eaten at the one in Atlanta before and it's been really great but this Gainesville location is lacking in a few different departments. Number one, it took our food close to an hour to arrive. We even ordered some starters and they did not come until after we received our regular food. We sat at the table for 45 minutes without a water or coffee fill up. It wasn't even a busy time. Creamy dreamy grits, 'nuff said! My sister and I met my grandmother at The Flying Biscuit Cafe for lunch last Saturday. I had called the day before to make reservations, but the restaurant does not take reservations. They do, however, allow diners to call for a table an hour before arrival. I almost forgot to call ahead and ended up only calling thirty minutes prior to our arrival. Once I reserved our table I received periodic text message updates. Initially, I received an alert that our wait was 220 minutes, but the hostess assured me that the wait would be much shorter. We ended up waiting about thirty minutes for a table. I considered ordering a salad or sandwich for my lunch for about a minute until I decided that was crazy! I had to try the biscuits! I love eggs Benedict and the menu offers four different types. I ordered the Southern Style Biscuit Benedict which included an open-faced biscuit, topped with pimento cheese, two poached eggs, crisp turkey bacon, and hollandaise sauce. The dish also came with a biscuit and a bowl of creamy dreamy grits. I guess my eyes were bigger than my stomach because I only managed to eat about half of my breakfast. My meal was delicious, but extremely rich! I would probably order a lighter dish next time to save more room for the creamy dreamy grits. I can only imagine the amount of cream, cheese, and butter that go into the grits! Oddly, the biscuits were not my favorite even though this is supposedly the Flying Biscuits specialty. The biscuits were warm and super fluffy, but I would have preferred a more savory biscuit. The biscuits were a little too sweet and were topped with additional sugar to make them even sweeter. The biscuits and a cranberry apple butter are out of this world. Pro tip: come early and be prepared to wait on weekends, I've waited up to an hour but it is worth it. Went there for brunch. I had the Egg-stravagnza, and everything about it was great. The best grits I've ever had, great bacon, sausage patty, biscuits, everything. They serve in fairly large portions too, so you're not wanting for food at the end of the meal. Went back there again a few days later to try the High-Flyer. That too was a solid choice. I never tried the moon-dusted potatoes that people are talking about, so you're on your own there. Service time is good, and prices are good for the food that you're getting.
