Denver Restaurant Week is one of my favorite times of year. You get to try normally expensive places for only $30 a person, and you typically get a ton of food. Some friends of ours joined us at The Fort this year for Restaurant Week. We wanted something different to start as an appetizer and went with the Jalapeno's Escabeche stuffed with peanut butter. I don't know if I can fully explain all of the flavors that was going on at this point. Immediately you are hit with the spiciness of the pepper, but then it is followed by the sweetness of the peanut butter. Then leaves your mouth with a slow burn. It was amazing!! Great started to the meal. Then you get your choice of two different steaks. We each picked one. i got the NY strip and Brian got the filet. My steak was good, but wasn't the best thing to write home about. Brian also got an order of Bison ribs. OMG! The ribs were so tender with a bold flavor. They also made an awesome treat for our dog. They all came with a side of fresh green beans, which are my favorite vegetable ever. The service was amazing and the ambiance was comforting. I love The Fort. read more

This is one of our favorite splurge, fancy places to go have dinner! For us, the look of the place and environment is part of the enjoyment. And thus far in all the times we've gone, we've always had prompt and friendly service. The food is always wonderful when we've gone. I tend to really love the Bison filet and I've never been let down with it. I don't think we've ever had anything there that wasn't really good. I personally love their salad and house ranch dressing. The ribs are pretty good, the Quail yummy. I love that they have Magills ice cream, as that's a favorite local place of ours. The Negrita for desert is yummy if you like some boozy chocolate! And the Prickly Pear Margaritas are always delicious. read more

I will start by saying that I am not a fan of taxidermy. Although the food was absolutely amazing, I couldn't get past the giant animal head mounted on the wall above my plate. Stuff like that gives me the heebee geebees. I am all about bison meat and I really like that the place has a rattlesnake cake served with tortilla chips and their guac. I've lived in Colorado for 26 years and had heard how good the restaurant was, so decided to take my wife for our 44th Anniversary. The fort look was nice and the ambiance was authentic looking. We got seated right away at a table by the window. First impression, the seats were wood and not comfortable. By the time we got up to leave, I could barely walk and my behind was sore. The server came out and greeted us and gave us a menu that turned out to be for appetizers only. We ordered the Rocky Mountain Oysters. Tasty! I liked them. Next came the salad. It was good. We got the meal menu. My wife ordered the buffalo prime rib and I ordered the platter with an elk medallion, buffalo medallion and a quail. My wife said the prime rib was just ok, the sides of green beans were not completely cooked and she didn't like the mashed potatoes. My buffalo medallion was tasty. I did not like the elk medallion or quail at all. The only thing that helped the elk was the preserves otherwise it was pretty tasteless. My green beans were the same, not cooked. The sliced potatoes were good. The server gave us the dessert menu. Because it was our 44th Anniversary, she gave each of us a dessert on the house. My wife had the mud pie and I had the Mexican chile cake with ice cream. Both desserts were good. The Fort is very pricey for what you get. We each had a coke at $4.50 each in a mason jar. We spent over $100. Not impressed. I marked the Fort off my bucket list. read more

I have to say, with 500+ reservations for la dia de Amistad y Amor, they were definitely running a bit slow, but overall, we enjoyed a great meal with great service. I'm at a 5 star review this time because not only was our server (gal with the pig tails) on point and nice, our meal was the best we've had here thus far. The dinner consisted of 1/2 order of buffalo balls (RMO's) which were battered with a crisp, crunchy crust served with a tangy sauce similar to cocktail sauce - and although my DH was more nervous than I was, I thought YOLO - and I've eaten stranger items to say the least. They rocked, going to get the full size next time. Next up was mussels and although very peppery in flavor, they were cooked just right. Salad and bread took forever to come, but that left time for a little wine and great convo. Homemade salad dressing and bread rocked and the main course of and 8oz buffalo with a chili rub was perfect. I didn't even have to use my knife for a medium cooked filet. The au gratin potatoes were salty, but it didn't matter, I received a portion of the dish that had a crispy bottom. YUM! The chocolate molten cake was not what I'm used to, but it was a large serving for two and was shaped like a heart. Way to go guys! read more

The structure of the restaurant itself was pretty cool. An old fort with a tee-pee in the courtyard. My fiance, a friend of ours, and I came here for dinner. We were visiting from out of town and our friend is from the area. She had eaten here before and thought it would be fun for my fiance and I to have a Denver dining experience. We started off with the Historians' Platter. It's actually for four people and our friend wasn't too hungry, so the waiter gave us a half order. We appreciated the accommodation. The boudies (buffalo sausage) were very flavorful and lean. The rocky mountain oysters were tender inside and crispy outside...sort of like deep fried liver in texture, but really nice and milder in flavor. The bison tongue was served on a crouton and tasted like a mild bologna. The peanut butter jalapenos were strange, but interesting. There were two dipping sauces for the items. My fiance had the salad (normal....greens and dressing) and I had the buffalo vegetable soup. It was served in a mini replica of the pots they used in the olden days to cook over a fire. Very cute. The soup had a nice balance of vegetable with a rich broth and big pieces of buffalo. So tasty! For our entrees, my fiance had the Elk Chop. I had a bite and it was surprisingly tender. The portion size was huge. The huckleberry sauce was very nice. He had never had elk before and really enjoyed the whole experience a lot. Our friend had the buffalo burger and enjoyed that also. I had the buffalo filet mignon, medium rare. This was the first time I had buffalo as an entree (I've had a bite here and there of buffalo burger, but never a whole entree ) and it was surprisingly amazing and perfect! According to our waiter, medium rare is the best way to cook it, and he was right. So tender and juicy!! The flavor was so deep and rich. It's ten times better than regular beef filet mignon. It seriously ranks with the kobe beef that I love so much. For dessert, we all shared the panna cotta (similar to flan if you've never had it before). Okay so for the prices you are paying, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. I went for appetizers and cocktails and was extremely disappointed. We got the sampler platter and the margaritas. Let me give you a run down on the platter. The Rocky Mountain Oysters were very tender but taste like the sauce you put on it. Pretty good but not great. The guacamole was so bad. I am not sure what you were going for but too much lime and the avocado was too chunky. Might as well been an avocado salsa. Too much lime, not heat and no flavor. The chips were bomb. The bison tongue was exceptional but don't tell people the salsa is a California salsa, you might offend someone from California with that gutter sludge. Why is it sweet? The bison sausage was spectacular. Probably the best item on the plate. So good I cut it up and put it in the guacamole to save it. It didn't help. Finally the epic failure for this plate was the Pickled Canned jalapeños with peanut butter. What the F#%$ was that? I ate it because I thought maybe you were on to something but you weren't. I kept smiling and eating it because I was amazed at this concoction but this was so bad. The best part of this whole thing and the reason for the two stars was the view. While the meat is made to perfection and the decor is excellent, the restaurant lacks in every other way. The service is not very good and is obviously designed to extract as much money from you as possible. Tonight, we went for my step dad's birthday. We arrived early and were sat immediately. They handed us menus (or so I thought.) I came hungry knowing their portions are typically sized for obese Americans. That was a mistake! The 'menu' was appetizers and drinks only. I immediately asked for a dinner menu. I didn't want to eat appetizers because I knew how enormous the portions are. The waitress told us about the drinks. Came back and we ordered drinks. Then she came back to tell us about the appetizers and I ordered chips and guacamole, which was excellent, but now having filled up on chips, I didn't want to eat my meal. (Plus if you're really hungry, filling up on chips is not pleasant.) IT WAS THIRTY MINUTES FROM THE TIME WE SAT DOWN UNTIL I GOT A MENU (AFTER I ASKED FOR ONE!!!!) Finally, we were able to order and the when the 12oz. of meat (which was $45) came I was barely hungry having eating all the chips and bread. Dear Fort management, I know you want to increase your check size by giving me no choice but to order appetizers and drinks and then an overpriced meal, which I won't eat because I've waited for over an hour for it, but really you wont' get me to return unless forced. read more

Hubby and I went for our anniversary a few weeks ago. He had the game plate, and I had the Gonzales steak which was a sirloin stuffed with green chiles and salad with a honey chiplotle dressing. The entire meal was delicious!! Hubby liked the game plate, but said the buffalo steak was the best. We had the chocolate cake with chile powder and peach cobbler for dessert. I thought it was a weird combination with chile and chocolate cake, but it was delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive and it was a wonderful experience. What a fun place! It was built based off of a fort buikt back in 1833! Great ambiance and fantastic service! Joe was a great waiter! Very attentive and great with details! A ton of the menu was gluten free. It offers a variety of food we have never had before! We tried bison steaks, elk chops, boar and jackalope sausage, and quail. It was all delicious! I was surprised by the negative reviews on here! I have been to The Fort a couple of times and I am always blown away by the quality of the service. The staff are amazingly attentive with refilling your water, taking away dirty plates/silverware, and anticipating any future needs. I appreciated the professionalism and curtesy from everyone we met who worked there. The atmosphere is very pleasant and there are lots of big windows so the lighting is nice. My husband and I arrived at opening time (5:30pm) so we could attend a show at Red Rocks and it was already quite busy (Wed night). We tried the peanut butter stuffed jalapeños which were tastier than I expected. Be careful--the server warned us that some may be spicier than others due to the pickling which we found to be true. They gave us pumpkin muffins and bread which were warm and yummy! We enjoyed the quail (felt small but so juicy!) and the 14 oz NY Strip Steak. Both were amazing. Love this place with high quality food and great service. I only wish it were a bit more affordable but it makes a nice treat for special occasions. :) read more

We frequented the Fort after my fiancé's master's degree graduation and we were not disappointed. The game meats are what peaked our interest so we each had the platter with buffalo, elk & quail, each of which was good. Also had the rocky mountain oysters. I brought my wife there for her birthday. The restaurant is tucked away behind a wall of red rocks. It was dark and all the lights were lit. As we walk in, there is a fire going to keep people outside warm. Although I don't know why you would be outside in 16 degree weather. It had a southwest feel with a courtyard in the middle of the fort. We ordered bison eggs and bison marrow bones as our starters. The bison eggs were made of hard boiled quail eggs rolled in bison sausage (making a round ball) covered with Panko and deep fried. It was served halved with a raspberry jalapeño sauce and green onions. It had a nice crisp on the outside but tender inside. The sauce was balanced and not spicy at all. The marrow takes awhile to make so if you want to try this, order it right away. They gave us 4 12" bones halved. The entire length of the bones was soft enough to eat. It was my first time eating marrow. It taste like baked tender fat that melts in your mouth. They should give customers the option to order a certain number of bones and charge by the bone because it was rich and a bit much for two people. Anyway, you scoop out the marrow and place it on the crostini. It is filling but so delicious. We ate only two bones and took the rest home. Try asking for a half order and no butter on the crostini unless you have a large group. I had the game platter which was grilled teriyaki quail in berry sauce, elk chop, and buffalo medallion with potatoes and green beans. It was cooked to perfection and seasoned well. I ate everything on the plate. My wife had the grilled teriyaki quail with berry sauce, green beans and quinoa-wild rice. It usually comes with potatoes but she loves quinoa. Since it was her birthday, they gave her a dessert on the house. She opted for the cheesecake to go. We were stuffed. We had Beer and sangria with our meal. Our bill was $137. The service was excellent. They replaced our silverware and plates after each course/meal. There was a Native American man playing the flute and a man dressed as a hunter telling guest about the fort's history. That was a little strange because he kept circling around, which is why we gave them 4 stars instead of 5. We still would recommend this place and we will be back. read more

The only thing we did not like is that there was no sit down bar to enjoy a cocktail before we were seated. They do have a lovely area outside and your server can bring drinks out there. They have great buffalo steaks and it's a very fun place to visit. It seems like so few restaurants offer much bison, but this is their trademark item and they do it very well!. They have big menu with many other choices and the owners clearly take a lot of pride in the operation. We like to make an evening of it by visiting "Flights" wine bar in Morrison followed by dinner at the Fort. Now that's living! read more

All I can say is mmmmmm! I spent 2 business trips during the summer of 2009 and 2010 in the Denver Area and ate here 3 times. Reservations are a must as it does get pretty busy on the weekends. The view is great. It overlooks the city from atop a red rock mountain. Before you make reservation, expect to pay big bucks for a dinner for 2. They average dinner for 2 will set you back upwards of 100 dollars plus. Some may say overpriced, but honestly, it is worth it to someone who is not afraid of spending some money for a good meal and great atmosphere. If you are often frugal... you may not think it's worth it, but that is what separates the cheap from those who enjoy the finer things in life. The staff was great. The ambiance is great. However, the menu is not your average menu. Let's just say it is a bit more outdoorsy. Sure they have beef and chicken, but if you wnat beef and chicken, go to Texas Lnghorn or Outback, but if you want a meal experience, try this place. Sportsmen would love this place, elk, buffalo, quail, rattlesnake, and need I say, Rocky Mountain Oysters.... If you don't know what the oysters are, try Wikipedia. AnywhoI tried the Buffalo Fillet. (medium of course) OMG.... TDF. This was the best fillet I have ever had. This is how meat is supposed to taste! I also tried quail eggs and rattlesnake, Interesting, but not my forte. That was visit and two, but on visit 3 I tried the Game Platter. Buffalo fillet, Elk and Quail. Loved the buffalo ofcourse, but was not a fan of elk... and quail is far too much work for what little meat there is. Therefore my tip is to try the buffalo fillet if you like a good steak. But then again, I am not a game eating person so that is just my taste. Everyone else with me loved their platters so it was just not my forte either. All in all, if you find something you like, it will be well worth it. The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars is because I really couldn't make an accurate opinion of the elk since I had never tried elk before. Don't listen to the negative reviews. Very disappointing. Tried salsa & guac with chips & you seriously could get better from the grocery store. Salad was the highlight of the meal & I'd give that 4 stars - the pumpkin seeds were a highlight! I got the strip steak medium & it was seriously well done, it was like cutting through a brick. Bread was dry & the pumpkin muffin tastes like something out of a stale hostess pack. Got the butterscotch sundae for dessert & I guess they could only spare a teaspoon of butterscotch. Sadly, The Fort has declined to little more than a pricey tourist trap (many would argue that this has been the case for decades -- I won't argue). I won't be going back: I'll leave it to dweebs who are entertaining out-of-town clients on a corporate expense account. Rustic charm and mediocre service only go so far at these prices. The food was ok, and the chocolate chile cake was spectacular. But the waitress refused to split our check (4 couples), so we had to figure it out. She also brought a $15.00 appetizer we did not order. I heard her say it came with a dip our friends ordered, but they dispute that (they paid for it anyway). The peanut butter-stuffed jalapenos were mediocre. The guacamole was superb. They were out of beef ribeye and creme brulee. My salmon was tender, but boring.
