I was in town for two months and only found this place the week I was leaving. This place is GREAT. Excellent produce, etc. etc. It's like a mini Whole Foods, but more reasonably priced. I would have shopped here solely if I had known about it. I have never seen a little boutique organic grocery store. This place is very unique. Really lovely market. Its small but very well curated. Definitely not the place where do all of my shopping, as it can be a little pricey compared to general grocery stores, but I try to eat all organic, so their store has great produce, meat, and snacks. A really nice little gem in an area that doesn't have a Whole Foods or Trader Joes. read more

Really nice owners and staff. Only reason for 4 stars is that they have no prepared food/hot food. Although - I did speak to a gentleman (I think a manager?) who said they're working on it! What they DO have is an impressive supplements/vitamins section, lots of great health food and organic brands, some fresh produce, and a wicked juice bar! (Seriously, the green juice they make is delicious and made to order). I imagine the smoothies are good too. Got some hummus from a local maker and it was quite good. Also enjoyed some fresh local kombucha (they have it on tap). Prices were average for a store that sells the brands that they do (ie not cheap but I don't think they're charging any more than Whole Foods for example). read more

A small, local "Whole Foods", in an area that desperately needs it! My favorite thing is to go and wander the aisles to find all the hidden gems that I can actually eat, as I have a very restrictive diet. This modestly-sized but well-stocked market was a blessing to my eyes since I had to be away from my hippie haunts back home. It has a small produce section and a case of cold prepared stuff and pickled things. There's a window at the back where you can order a fresh cold smoothie or juice blend. They have a thoughtfully-curated section for toiletries and medicinal items. The food aisles are full of interesting stuff and the GF section was second to none. I saw stuff here that I haven't seen anywhere else. The aisle for snacks and food bars was also particularly great. I was quite impressed. I strolled out with a ginger kombucha and several great things to eat on my plane ride home. Just say NO to expensive airport garbage. A further note -- some hippie markets are a bit unwelcoming to a carnivore like me. But this place, perhaps because it is in Wisconsin, clearly had no such hard feelings. The meat freezer was full of nice stuff. If I still lived here I'd shop at this joint every week. read more

I've been to this store a few times when in town for business, seeking healthy food I wouldn't have to cook (take away/pre-made items). The cold salads (cucumber and pasta salad, tabbouleh, etc.) appear to be soaking in not-so-healthy ingredients, such as lots of mayo or oil. I purchased a quinoa tabbouleh and it had zero parsley, bits of cheese (?) and was swimming in oil. Overall there are not a lot of vegan options and/or items with plant protein (beans, tofu, seitan) for take away. This place could kill it if they offered that! read more

This store is a nice store with a good selection its size. But way too small for what Appleton needs. Their produce selection is terrible. But that's not what I go to this store for. They have a great selection of organic meats. This is where I got my wonderful organic free range turkey for thanksgiving. Although it was a VERY expensive $40 turkey. But since the rest of what we had was inexpensive it make the cost easier to take in. They should go to Wausau, and check out the organic store 'the local grocer'. That is smaller like this one and 10x better. I wish we had a 'local grocer' in Appleton! It would do SO well if it was as good as the Wausau store. read more

The Free Market is a great place for anyone looking for healthier alternatives to traditional grocery stores. I love that there are so many organic, non-gmo products here and that they use local farmers as much as possible. My only critique is I wish there was a better selection of produce available. I agree with Jeremiah that the produce section was lacking, but maybe that could be fixed. If sales are not high enough, selection may lack; It simply isn't cost-effective to carry a wide variety when the customer base isn't very large. Food would end up getting thrown out. Maybe it would help if there were CSA selections what were announced to customers. I went hoping to find local produce but was disappointed. I was also hoping to find raw Wisconsin cheese. No luck. But I couldn't find raw cheese anywhere in Wisconsin. Should have looked up farms beforehand. Was in the state just one day. Would have bought meat if I wasn't driving across the country. Still glad to find a cooperative en route. read more

Although this store is a little over priced, I like that I am supporting a small local business. I love that I can get locally made and processed meats, vegetables, fruits and dairy. I realize some of these items can also be found at the farmer's market, but it is nice convenience to have it available during the week. read more

Obviously, this place is going to be a more expensive than other places. But I do appreciate the selection of the items that they have, as well as their integrity in the items that they have. You can tell that whoever orders for the store puts a lot of thought into it before selecting what to put on the shelves. I love love love the popcorn that you can measure out yourself in their bulk item area. We have it every Sunday during our family movie and popcorn night after dinner. We don't buy popcorn anywhere else. Yeah, I guess I could give this place four stars because of their prices, but for a store with such a niche market and specialized targeted audience, you're going to pay a lot more. That's just it. I have been a huge fan of this place for years. The owners are very nice and personable and really try to cater to their customers. When they moved from their old location, I was very impressed that they really listened to what their customers would like. I think they have a good variety and I love that when I shop, I know I am getting good quality food and supporting the community. I highly recommend checking them out! read more

I will have to say local markets have a lot of competition! You have to compete against the chain places like Wal-Mart and the local grocer. But what those places lack are organic products, products that are produced without GMO's and vegan, gluten free, plant based items for cooking and even body care. Appleton has a good thing going with the weekly farmers market. If you need local fresh produce the Farmer's market is the best place to go! I found The Free Market while looking for staple vegan foods I had in Arizona. It is very hard to be vegan in the land of cheese and dairy. When I first walked into this place, though small, I knew I would find everything I was looking for. The store owners are very nice and even told us that they could order anything we needed if they didn't already have it in stock. It is important to have the connection with a store...no wasted supply on non demand. I give this place 5 stars because it is thriving, regardless of its size and prices...you get what you pay for. If you want 5 lbs of beef for a dollar then you can imagine what quality you'll get ;) read more

Several years ago we spent 2 weeks visiting family in Appleton. I found this business while searching for a specialty store that sold ingredients and food for someone who has celiac and is also allergic to dairy, soy, nuts and other ingredients (me!). This store had everything I needed to be able to exist for 2 weeks having to eat differently than everyone else. I have to cook everything from scratch and cannot eat in restaurants because of my extensive food allergies. They even had my favorite GF Bard's beer...an extra bonus. The cashier was the owner, and she gave me a free sample of a pumpkin bar that was so delicious I was in heaven. We will be returning this fall to Appleton and I look forward to shopping there again. read more
