I LOVE this North Loop restaurant. I am constantly dreaming of their Steak & Pierogi dish. It's a combo I am unfamiliar with but is the perfect serving size and SO flavorful. I've been to Freehouse a few times for different occasions, mostly after work for a quick bite and a beer. I like their tap list, but I do wish they had Guinness or a few other classic beers on tap. Since they're in such a busy area, it seems like a place that often gets picked spontaneously by people who may not realize it's primarily a brewery. As for the food, I haven't been especially impressed based on the appetizers I've tried. Everything has felt a bit safe and under-seasoned, and I've struggled to find something that really stands out in terms of flavor. It's not bad by any means, just a little forgettable. Service: 2 stars, as we were forced to sit outside (chilly but near a nice fire). Our server just couldn't keep up, though they were responsive when asked. The main thing is our food wasn't terribly hot upon arrival, but maybe sitting in the cool afternoon didn't help. Ambience: 1 star, primarily due to the 1970s Soft Rock Tribute Band playing at a thunderous volume near the bar. The din forced us outdoors into the cold. Great food and drinks at The Freehouse! The truffle burger was delicious, I truly enjoyed every bite! The lemongrass Thai chicken was also very good, especially when adding the cauliflower rice. It took a while for someone to greet us, but we were finally seated. They had happy hour going on still so we ordered the chicken wings and a loaded mashed potatoes. This is where it went downhill.... The mashed potatoes tasted..... extra salty and sour? They had a cranberry sauce on them, which was odd. The chicken was covered in feathers and the piece that wasn't, when we bit into it, it was COMPLETELY frozen in the center. We returned the wings and did not order a new batch. If you've been to any other Blue Plate restaurant, you know what to expect - a broad menu that is appealing to most, a more casual ambiance and unique to the Freehouse, their own beer brewed on site. They consistently put out some quality beer that doesn't just stick to standard styles, have some decent happy hour specials and the food is generally good comfort food. Anything fried will hit the spot, there's a reason the turkey burger is on the menu at all BP spots and there's not many other places nearby that'll offer brinner on the evening menu. The North Loop isn't hurting for options, but the Freehouse is a good one if you need a menu with broad appeal or if you're in the mood for a casual happy hour. read more

Visited 12/27/25. After visiting, my sister and I agreed that we love Freehouse most for drinks, apps (like a happy hour kind of vibe), and brunch. On this occasion, we lucked out with street parking, but there's also ramp parking nearby. Our waitress was super accommodating to our group of 6 and consistently checked in throughout. Freehouse has such a fun vibe and I love the sheer amount of drink options they have. There's truly something for everyone. I got a cider while others in my group got beers and one person got a wine. I like that they include a combination of Freehouse beers + other rotating taps. For dinner, I got the rotisserie chicken sandwich, my sister got the cauliflower za'tar, and others in our party got the chimichurri short rib, the prime rib, and the steak and pierogies. We all ate our full plates and I'll give the best shout out to the house made chips. These were delicious and I would order them by themselves! With the sandwich for some reason the balance felt a little off and this happens with rotisserie chicken, but I got a few pieces of bone or something sharper while I was chewing which can be off-putting. Loved the jus that accompanied, but for some reason the sandwich wasn't as creamy or as flavorful as I thought it would be. The baguette is the best part. Would benefit from something a little sharper like a horseradish or mustard or something pickled to liven it up a bit. My sister felt similarly about her cauliflower dish. Overall, the Freehouse is still such a fun spot in a fun location. The apps themselves are wonderful and I regret not getting these. I've been here a few times but had been a while. My date wanted to be on a patio and so I chose Freehouse. It was kind of busy but we walked in and got seated quickly. From there on out, nothing else went very well. Ordered some dry rub wings, oysters, buffalo cauliflower and a couple drinks. Both took a while to come out and the drinks didn't actually come out till after the food came out which is definitely a pet peeve of mine. The dry rub wings were grilled and I had no clue, so thats partly my fault, but I feel like grilled is usually listed on the menu. Oysters were fine but my date usually has them with Tabasco and they had none which was kind of odd. And then they forgot all about the cauliflower, we waited til he checked in on us to ask about it but by that time we were done with our food and didnt even want it anymore. Drinks were fine. Went here with a group of friends. We went on a Monday evening and had reservations. We were able to pick inside or patio upon arriving. We ended up picking the patio because it was nice out but towards the end of us dining it started to rain, gotta love Mn weather. We started with drinks and a few apps. I got the slushy - which was a blue raspberry one - not sure what liquor it had in it but it was really good. For apps we got the buffalo cauliflower and cheesecurds. Both apps were really good so I was hopeful for the entrees. I got "the Rachel" turkey sandwich with fries. It was good but I probably wouldn't order it again the bottom of the bread got really mushy won't the pickles and other toppings making it a bit messy to eat. Someone else ordered a blt and asked for the bacon to be cooked crispy, basically burnt and when it came out some of the pieces looked like they were barely cooked. The seafood was good, and it had some heat, but I was expecting it to be creamier.. it was basically just crushed tomatoes, pasta and seafood. The drinks were good; I got one and asked to remove the bitters and they were happy to do so. One thing I want to highlight is they have you pay on a card machine without showing you the bill. This is a pretty solid north loop spot that is a great weekend stop if you don't have reservations. many North Loop restaurants will need some kind of reservation on weekends because they get so busy, but we were able to get in Saturday night at 7:30 with no wait at all. Their menu is quite extensive and they have things ranging from burgers to salads to pasta dishes. Drink menu is original and has some fun cocktails. The wings with the Asian buffalo sauce are my absolute favorite. The flavor is always so tasty and the wings are a good size. We also tried the burger, which was supposed to have some red in the middle and instead was thoroughly cooked. Service was friendly. I always love going to the Freehouse. I will say it's annoying how they have gotten rid of their parking lot over the years, so we have to tack on $10 to park now as we drive in from the burbs. The restaurant is cozy and fun. We had a reservation this time and were seated pretty quickly. There was a lot of staff, but our service was a bit discombobulated. Our waitress took our orders and then my boyfriend's drink was dropped off and mine was forgotten. About 5min later a food runner dropped off our appetizer, but quickly ran away and we had no silverware or plates and I was still missing my drink. When our waitress finally came around and we got our silverware and plates, our app was cold. Our dinners were good, but my boyfriend was disappointed at how small his portion was. He got the breakfast bowl and was still hungry. I enjoyed the fish fry, but wish there would have been more vegetables included to offset the grease. I literally got one bite of coleslaw, the smallest portion I've ever seen. I've definitely had better times at Freehouse. Not sure I'll be excited to go back anytime soon. read more

I've been to The Freehouse a few times and have always had a good experience. On my latest trip the service was a little slow (took 15 minutes for the waitress to first visit our table). The food was very good. My issue is this: the ceiling is filthy. Covered in dust. With the light just right, you can see the dust falling from the ceiling onto tables. In town, the morning after my flight, a friend brought me to this neighborhood restaurant. Not knowing what to expect, I was thrilled to see the brunchy/breakfast items on the menu. We wanted to sneak in one last brewery for the evening, and the pictures of this one online looked very cool, so why not... and it was open the latest. It was pretty packed at the bar, but we managed to find two seats that just opened up on the backside of the bar. Everyone behind the bar said hello while passing by with other drinks or food. They made sure to let us know right away that last call for the kitchen was coming up in about 20 minutes so we cohld focus on looking over the menu to see if we wanted anything. My eyes went to two things the Tuna Poke and the Deviled Eggs. The problem was that the Deviled Eggs, you only get 5 halves... so 2 1/2 eggs and the appetizer was $16.50! For 2 1/2 eggs?!? It actually cost more than the Tuna Poke. So that made it an easy choice. I still can't get over the price of them. I don't think I could have made a better decision with the Tuna Poke, either. Ben had already eaten, so this was supposed to be for me, and I found myself having to give him small bites to keep him to helping himself, and the dish would have been gone super quickly. It was amazing. Everything blended so well, and we had never had Poke with capers in it, but they went so well. We didn't even notice there wasn't avocado in it, which has been in every Poke I've ever had. We didn't miss it. Had we known how good it was going to be, we would have ordered 2 before the kitchen closed. The Poke even stole the show from the beers, I can't remember what I even ordered. There was a DJ for the holiday that made it the perfect vibe to hang out for a couple of hours.
