Milwaukee Road is located inside the Renaissance Hotel in downtown. Plenty of parking is available downtown between nearby ramps and meters although it is generally paid parking. The hotel itself feels somewhat elegant, but the restaurant is well lit and not intimidating! We went for lunch on a weekday. It wasn't very busy, and not a lot of staff were on sight that day but service was friendly! For drinks, I got the strawberry smokestack but subbing vodka for the bourbon because I don't like bourbon or smoky drinks! My friend got the lychee martini! They have a good variety of drinks, including mocktails, and are able to accommodate some changes, so there's something for everyone. I enjoyed my drink, I felt like it was mostly fruity, with the notes of balsamic coming through! My friend also enjoyed her drink, which had a prominent lychee flavor! We split the peach burrata salad and the vegan mushroom burger. The peach burrata salad uses canned peach and a good quality burrata that's quite creamy. They have a generous amount of both in the salad, so you can get some variety in each bite! We went with the larger size and thought it was a good portion for splitting, we probably would've been fine to split the smaller size! For the vegan mushroom burger, we enjoyed the crunch from the batter that coated the mushrooms! The brioche bun was slightly sweet and was airy. I was surprised the pickles were also a bit sweet (like a bread and butter pickle rather than dill pickle). I would've preferred a dill pickle and think it would've gone well with the dill sauce that was on the burger. It was a decent burger but not life changing! However, I do appreciate when places do a housemade veggie burger! We chose fries for our side which we really enjoyed. They were crispy on the outside and fluffy potato-y on the inside. I went here for my birthday, my girlfriend's birthday and my mom's birthday. I absolutely love this restaurant! It has an elevated feel, but not too fancy. I've got different things everytime I went and it never disappointed! The menu is legit. I love everything they have especially with their steak with mashed potatoes and asparagus; they had a really good Valentine's Day special where me and my boyfriend got $70 for entrees, two starters, and two drinks! not bad. Our waitress took our order from the good beer selection and my buddy ordered a burger, which he said was one of the best he has had. I ordered a sausage and pepperoni flatbread to go with my hazy IPA and I would probably give it a three, although the meat was good and plentiful. There was cut up mozzarella in slices, and I liked that touch. It seemed like it didn't stay warm though very long and the crust was a little too crispy for my liking and the sauce wasn't anything special. Gorgeous restaurant and patio, though a mid-February visit kept us sensibly indoors. As a rule, I'm reluctant to dine at a hotel restaurant, as they are usually a bit subpar and overpriced. Not this one. On the ground floor of the Renaissance Mpls, the MR is very polished yet warm and comfortable. We basically had Happy Hour before a Guthrie show, so just cocktails and apps. All terrific. Even the potato chips and dip was quite good. I enjoyed the Chowda, with big chucks of seafood in a thick broth. Yum. I also recommend the wedge salad, particularly because they offer a small/large choice - tasty and not too much lettuce. The house Manhattan was very good too, chilled and smoky. Made with a solid rye. I scored the MR 4-stars instead of 5 simply because of the parking. The valet station was in place but we saw no actual valet on duty the entire time. Still, parking is available on-street at meters or around back in a ramp. This place is a very nice surprise and I'll plan to return soon. read more

First of all, we had a difficult time finding the entrance as we were tourists and not being familiar with The Depot, we walked all around it, finally finding an entrance to the restaurant on the patio side. I usually avoid hotel restaurants and having read so-so reviews for this one, we were a bit hesitant, but not much is open on Mondays in Minneapolis, so it was slim pickin's. It was also conveniently less than a 10 min walk from our downtown hotel. (Many Minneapolis restaurants and attractions seem to be closed Mondays -- not great if you're a tourist who happens to be there on a Monday!) We wanted to sit outside, but it was full, so we sat inside where it was quiet, dimly lit and a bit lacking in atmosphere. It took a while to be acknowledged and for our order to be taken. It took at least half an hour for our food to arrive and I realized right away that the chicken I'd ordered to top my salad was missing. This was likely because the waitress didn't write the order down and didn't repeat the order back to us. I then had to wait for the chicken to arrive on a side plate while my husband began his meal. Due to this mistake, the restaurant was kind enough to compensate us, but it didn't add to our evening enjoyment. Overall, a very average experience. Stopped by for dinner before a show at the Guthrie, we had a 6pm reservation before a 7:30 show which my friends I was with said they had done here before and the timing always worked out. Unfortunately, this was not the case for us. At around 7, our server cleared half our plates and we were ready to ask for the check when she returned to clear the rest of the table. Unfortunately, 15 minutes passed without seeing her again (we were one of 3 tables there and her only table I believe). We asked the other server for the check, stating that we had to head out soon to make it to the show in time. He went to find her but it took another 20 minutes to find her and work on sorting out the bill (it took 3 tries to get the machine working and get all items on the check correctly). We ended up leaving the restaurant just after 7:30, ran the 5 minutes to the Guthrie, and had to miss the first 10 minutes of the show. Food seemed to be variable, my friends who got the BLT and burgers enjoyed their meals, but my other friend notes that the fried chicken sandwich was very soggy and my chicken Caesar was not great. The Parmesan crisp was so soggy that it bent in half instead of snapping, the grilled bread was rock hard, and it honestly tasted just like romaine lettuce with bottled dressing (not a bad thing but for $15 I would have expected more). I paid $7 extra to add chicken and it ended up being a grilled chicken thigh, which isn't bad necessarily I was just expecting grilled chicken breast so that's something to be aware of. On a positive note, my strawberry spritzer mocktail was great! I would not return here for food, but if I was in the area or had a friend staying in the hotel I would return just for drinks (and make sure I had extra time scheduled for slow service). read more

The furniture and ambiance in the restaurant is beautiful. Very small menu, maybe 8 meal options to choose from and a handful of appetizers. I had the Caesar salad with steak - it was delicious! I've experienced the breakfast buffet, cocktails and snacks, and dinner and have yet to be disappointed. The staff is attentive and accommodating. Food has been excellent. Drinks and food are fairly priced for a fashionably designed restaurant in a chic hotel located downtown Minneapolis. Breakfast buffet comes with all juices, coffee, and tea along with a lovely chef who makes a fantastic omelette and eggs over-easy. Of course you have all the other buffet options as well, such as: bacon, sausage, pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns, fruit, yogurt, and oatmeal. For cocktails and snacks I advise sitting in the area by the bar and ordering off the 3 for 15$ menu. My favorites are the 3 bite sized grilled cheese sliders with an espresso cup of tomato soup, 4 wings and the Milwaukee Road Bread. They make a fantastic Lemon Drop but I also enjoyed the Pink Flirtini and a Citrus Gimlet (Gimlet is not on the menu. I saw a customer tell the bar tender how to make this variation of the lime gimlet. It sounded delicious, so I jumped on the gimlet bandwagon.) For dinner I recommend the chopped salad. * I added shrimp. Or any of the salmon and vegetable dishes. Absolutely delicious. I also had their tomato bisque soup a few evenings in a row. We came here for a business lunch around noon on a Friday. It was pretty empty so we were seated, greeted, and served pretty much right away due to the lack of patrons. Everyone really enjoyed their food (fish tacos, caesar salad with grilled shrimp, flatbread, and some chili), but beware that the caesar salad actually comes deconstructed, so it was somewhat difficult for my coworker to eat it without spilling (we asked for an extra bowl to smooth things out!). Things were great overall and the food was very fresh, but nothing blew us away that would set this restaurant apart/bless it with five stars. It does have a little awkward vibe since it's in a hotel lobby with no clear walls separating it from the rest of the lobby, but no major complaints! read more

The Depot had the brilliant idea of taking their indoor restaurant and re-locating it to the open air shed. This allows for outdoor dining with a roof. The tables are spaced apart which allows for great social distancing. All the food is served in disposables from the silverware to the picnic like containers. The menu is way more casual with burgers and chicken shwarma kabobs. The food is good not fabulous and the wine and beer list is decent with a few cocktails available. Unfortunately there were tornado warnings last night so we had to move inside for a brief period to avoid the sideways rain. Yes..even with the shed you can't escape sideways rain. I will say I wish their mask policy was take more seriously. I assume if you are standing or walking you should have a mask on even outdoors. The signage for their policies needs to be clearer and bigger! I know we are outside but it feels better to know the person walking by you will be wearing a mask. read more

This is a restaurant inside the Marriott Renaissance hotel. The surrounding decor and atmosphere is cool. They have a train theme. There is an impressive sitting area in front of a large fireplace and the chairs are classic worn leather reminiscent of a British pub. I ate here twice while in Minneapolis. First was lunch. Service was excellent without being annoying. I had a chai tea latte and the chicken dip. The bread on the dip was great. Chicken pieces were big and the dip that they used (salty chicken broth) was a little lackluster. In my opinion, adding a Dijon or some other kind of sauce, slicing the chicken thinner and using the au jus from the French dip would all make this sandwich better. Ok, but way too salty. The second time I ordered breakfast as room service from The connected Residence Inn hotel, also a Marriott. The Minnesota Northwoods omelet appealed to me because it had local wild rice in it. It was excellent and the hollaindaise sauce was also really good. With both meals I subbed fruit for potatoes, and that is actually why I left a review. I was very pleased that the fruit both times seemed to be freshly cut and delicious. Refreshing to not have the standard soggy, non edible fruit cups which usually occur in restaurant hotels. This place is pretty decent for a hotel bar. That's what it is; don't mistake it for a hidden gem independent of the Depot Hotel. However, it does have some things going for it. The bartender was friendly and conversational, and they have some nice local brews on tap. The place is a bit swank because it's part of the hotel, but if you don't mind that it's an OK spot to get a beer or two while in the area. The happy-hour food specials looked pretty good, but I'm not sure if I'd order food here unless I was going to be there for a while or was staying at the hotel. I took a peek at their patio and it seems that in fair weather it'd be fun to hang out there and enjoy the outdoors, and possibly their fire pit. What was really cool about the Stone Arch Bar, though, is all the Milwaukee Road stuff they have on display, and the historical nature of the old depot, which gives the hotel its name. They have a lot of artifacts from the train line on display behind glass cabinets and a lot of it is really interesting and cool. They also have loads of beautifully framed posters that hark back to when the Milwaukee Road was a slick, new form of travel out west. This museum aspect really improved the place's stock in my opinion, and you are free to roam around the lobby area where they have stuff on display throughout the first floor of the hotel. This is the 3rd visit during the past 3 months and while the wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable, there is an insufficient number of support staff on duty to support a higher rating. While the food has been consistently good, the dinner extended to almost 2 hours. The two servers on duty also greeted and seated new guests and mixed drinks. There was no host nor bartender! I did like you could wear what ever you wanted. We came in for a conference and it was late and most of us wore sweats/comfortable clothes. My drink was like a blueberry lemonade cocktail with Redbull, which I really enjoyed. My friend and I ordered the chips and dip (yummy and would recommend) to quickly put out our hunger, and for our main dish we settled into a couple of salads. He had the cobb and I had the Depot's signature something (like a mixed greens salad with duck, blue cheese, apples, walnuts, and sweet potatoes). My friend said he enjoyed his salad, but didn't care for all the cheese they put on it. I liked my salad, but I didn't love it. The sweet potatoes were too small to taste, and the duck was cold and not cut up - if they changed these too things (hot and/or cubed duck, and larger sweet potatoes) I think it would have been much better. Service and the time it took for our *salads* to get to us was a bit long, especially when the restaurant was pretty empty. I just finished my meal at Charlie's Grill. The pluses - nice decor inside the Renaissance Depot hotel and that follows through into the Grill. The restaurant is clean which means a lot. It is noisy at dinner time from the bar across the hall. I had the Charley burger which was a little dry but was cooked to order (medium to medium well). The homemade chips were average at best. The prices were about what you would expect in a hotel restaurant. The menu had a decent variety. My server got the cheesecake of the day wrong.
