So I just got out of work late. Went to " The Gin Mill" for the firs time. Located on 442 Amsterdam Avenue with some co-workers, one of them who identifies as non gender-binary. They had to use the restroom but the women's bathroom was crowded-so they went to the men's room which was empty and they went into the stall. The bouncer of the bar stormed in there and kicked them out and told them that they weren't allowed to go into go into the men's and they kicked her out the bar. This is 2018 and it's totally unexpectable what went down within the last 2 mins. This was my first time at the bar since my co worker introduced it to me along with our other coworkers and for damn sure it's our last time. We are definitely going to fight back and sue for discrimination. What if my friend/coworker identified themself as a male? This place is fucked up. I'm so disgusted we should take back all the $ we spent on food and drinks we paid from this establishment. Spread the word. DO NOT DINE OR DRINK AT THE GIN MILL. I just found my go-to dive bar on the UWS. Gin Mill has TVs strategically placed throughout the bar, so you can catch your favorite sports game throughout the year. But the big selling point is the ridiculously amazing "happy hour," which is undoubtedly one of the best in the city. Half price off everything in the bar every day from 11:30am to 8pm! Let me repeat. Half price of EVERYTHING in the bar. Top shelf liquor, import and domestic beers, you name it. I bought drinks for my friend and I and spent a whopping total of $8 on not one, but two ketel vodkas on the rocks. Happy hour? More like happy day!! The bartenders were very friendly and fast (and yes, very attractive). The crowd was chill. What more can you ask from a dive bar in NYC? I'm certainly going to be a regular. For that Upper West side dive bar greatness I go to this place everytime my team plays dodgeball (which we are always victorious at) and everytime end up having fun. The beerpong in the back and impromptu games played at the table after everyone has downed about two pitchers of cheap beer a piece are priceless. I went there this Thursday and stayed until 1am knowing full well I had work the next day, but the flip cup from the group of guys at the next table was enough to keep anyone at the bar and away from bed. This bar has amazing drink specials, $7 pitchers! (I mean damn!), the music is alright (sometimes you get stuck with some horrible shit like brittney spears - toxic, and once they played ben folds - brick which is not by any means drinking music unless you want to kill yourself once you are hammered) the crowd isn't too ugly, but by no means hot like the UES crowd (but after about 2 pitchers does it really matter? No, it doesn't that was a rhetorical question) and the food/beer is just what you expect from a disgusting dive bar...cheap and awesome! Go to this bar to meet some low quality women, eat some low quality food and drink some god awful low quality beer. The fun to be had here however is so high quality that it doesn't matter when you are talking to a chick with a slight mustache and an adams apple after pitcher #3. So soak it in my friend and get ready to pull some truly disgusting moves (what else do you expect from the people who brought you Mo's Caribbean and off the wagon?). Cheers to you! read more

As I mentioned in the Jake's Dilemma review, this is part of a sister network of bars/restaurants with basically the same menu, same drink specials and same annoying clientele. The drink specials are pretty righteous but I'm too cranky/old to deal with it anymore. It smells like a distillery in here, no doubt from the 22 year olds who a) are playing beer pong, b) fresh out of college or have one semester left or c) away from mommy and daddy's grasp for a weekend. Gun-to-back, I choose Jake's over this place because of the staff. This place I feel have bartenders with chips on their shoulders. The staff is less annoying at Jake's. Again, the drink specials and slider menu are worth going for, at least once, but I get so annoyed, I am better off ordering on Seamless and getting my own beer. Seriously, if you are over 30, you are totally over Gin Mill. At least Jake's has some nice folks working there. read more

I work close by and in the summer, this place is poppin. Now we're in autumn, and our favorite bartender/waitress, Alyssa, is making sure we enjoy our stay while we watch the football game. Service is usually pretty good, but special props to Alyssa who keeps it real while also keeping it high and tight. It's just past 10pm on a Thursday in September, so you know it's time for shots. I've never been here unless it was a Gotham Gators event (for Univ of Florida alums), but every time I'm here, I have a blast (and get blasted). If you want a packed house, great beer specials ($7 pitchers remind me of college!), and a bunch of crazed people wearing the mismatched combo of orange and blue...come here on a Saturday. The food is typical sports food (wings are okay, nachos are fantastic--or maybe I was just full of $7 pitchers by the time I had them), but the service works hard and is very patient with us Rowdy Reptiles. We stumbled upon this place after we had dinner a few blocks up at Bodrum. A friend caught the sign that said "Power Hour" 8-9pm. It was exactly 8:01 on the dot when we saw it. $1 Domestic Beers and $2 shots... You can't beat that. Once we were in the bar had the whole "college, frat boy vibe" to it. Flat screens were everywhere and there was a lot of people, but it was a Saturday night. I would be going back here again. read more

This place has amazing happy hour deals every night of the week except Saturdays! The beer on tap selection is good, the bartenders are friendly, and the venue is large with beer pong tables in the back and tables up front. I was between two and three stars on this one, this is one of a number of similar college frat-bars. It earns points, like many of its sister establishments for the beer pong and the crowds of rowdies and easy pickins. But as others have stated, it is a bit of a swordfight. Their rating distribution is like a big EFF you! aahaha This place is AWWEEsome! I'm still in college so cheap booze and chill atmosphere? I'm game. On Thursday nights, they have sweet deals for college students. I forget all the deals that I saw up on the walls, but for the night I was there, they had 1/2 off any kind of bombs. We got two rounds of Irish car bombs. Loved it, but was annoyed that the glass of Guiness was not as full as it should have been. Probably only 1/3 full. Also, mozzerella sticks were pretty tasty. Crumbly fried texture on the outside. Served fresh and hot so the cheese was stringy yuummm. But the price..$6 ish....mmm... let's just say it's drunk food, not sober food. TOO CROWDED! If you are looking for a packed out bar that everyone bumps into you and spills their beers on you, then look no further. Bouncers were kind of not so nice, and seating was a joke to enjoy a game. The bartenders were very nice, but it was 4 deep the entire time. The bathrooms are downstairs, and the stairs are kind of shifty. If you are looking for wana be college 'coolio's, you will find them here. We had our wedding reception at the Speakeasy Room located in The Gin Mill. The "Eat, Drink and Be Merry Team" helped us coordinate it! They were amazing! SO perfect! I can't say enough good things about their team and our experience. They have been SO easy to work with from day 1! Always responsive, so helpful, very easygoing and our party ended up being enjoyable and not stressful at all because of it! The food was all fantastic! I could have eaten it for days! The drinks were responsibly served and definitely delicious! Every single person we interacted with from the door men, to the bartenders, including ALL the staff at the Gin Mill were personable, helpful, positive and kind. It was just the best reception ever! We could not be happier with our experience and how we were treated. Great sports bar, there are tvs everywhere showing all the games going on. There is always a drink specials, and a great happy hour going on which you can never go wrong with. Great dive bar with a fun atmosphere. I came here multiple times a week when I worked around the corner and brought coworkers and friends from out of town. It's not a regular spot for the people I introduced to it and it goes to show that the establishment is simply a good time. On St Patrick's day is a madhouse so go early and get a table downstairs. It's also very very very crowded and loud on the weekends or and with seasonal sports televised inside. My favorite nights were the in-between traffic evenings because the service is great when it's not packed. Love the veggie burger and heard the wings are the best in the city. read more

While the happy hour is a nice touch, the drinks are a bit weak (depending on your bartender). Typical overpriced bar food is in store as well. The half price happy hour does draw you in, but you never seem to get your money's worth. I had five drinks and each one was full of ice and about a half of a shot in each. We didn't expect much from this seemingly harmless dive bar--especially on a weekday afternoon.  Cold drinks and outdoor seating was the goal.  After grabbing a table outside, it took us all of fifteen minutes to realize that no one was coming to take our order.  We went inside to order a round with the female bartender on duty who swiftly asked for a credit card to start our tab.  One hour and one round later, it was time to leave.  Only when we went to close our tab, the same bartender couldn't find our card.  She searched for a few moments while assuring us outloud that she "definitely didn't give the card to someone else" yet had no idea where our card had gone.  It just disappeared.  Her response to the situation?  Something along the lines of "don't worry we'll void your bill."  We ended up leaving behind some contact information in case it showed up, but alas it never did.  There wasn't much of an apology or any remorse at all for that matter.  And we all know how frustrating the process of canceling and ordering a new card can be.  I guess what really gets me is that there were only 7 people in the bar MAX at this point and still they weren't competent enough to keep track of the cards.  Bartender was trash. She was a tavern wench. It makes me wonder how this place functions on a busy night...I won't be sticking around to find out. If you still feel the need to come to The Gin Mill do yourself a favor and get a real drink Burke and Wills. read more

We hosted my son's (and new daughter-in-law's) wedding reception here after they got married in Central Park for a special on "Say yes to the Dress." I could not have been happier with the venue downstairs in the Speakeasy room. It was just the perfect size for the 24 people who came along to witness the destination wedding. Originally rented from 8-11 pm., Meghan didn't bat an eye when we wanted to add an hour. Drinks were top shelf and plentiful, shrimp cocktails were delicious and the music was provided by anyone (of course, anyone) who had a phone. Meghan was friendly, accommodating, and handled the mob scene of all us with aplomb. I would go back here in a heartbeat, and in fact I will when I'm next in New York. Thanks to Meghan and The Gin Mill for great service and even greater memories! BTW...very reasonable price for the venue in the heart of the Upper West Side. read more

I went with a group of friends on Monday night. The female bartender was wonderful and lovely. The male bartender was genuinely awful. He gave my friends shit for only ordering one drink, which is entirely inappropriate for a server or bartender to do. He wouldn't let up on them and referred to "not going to their jobs and laying his dick on the desk" which didn't make sense at the time and continues to not make sense. I work in the neighborhood and love going out after work with my friends and this terrible experience will keep me from going back. read more

As a touring musician across the world, you often have to be subject to eat to what's available in the area. When I was in Spain, I was in a "food heaven"; in Slovenia..... the beer was good. I rehearse often in and near the upper west side area and the place that I often frequent is Gin Mill. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is always welcoming. And the one person that brings it all together is Alyssa, you want to talk about the pinnacle of an example of workmanship? She's you're shining example! I feel like it's perpetually happy hour in here. And that's a very good thing. There's a special every day of the week so you almost never have to pay full price to drink here. There's a long bar and seating in the back so it's a good place a to bring a group. The food is just mediocre bar food-nothing special. I feel like the food is priced slightly higher than it should be, but I'm assuming that's to compensate for the cheap drinks.
