As for muffins, you're looking at a serious variety of cream and fruit filled goodness. They might as well be cupcakes. We got four different kinds and taste tested them all. Banana Cream was very good, but would have been better with banana flavored cake instead of vanilla, which made the cake taste bland compared to the filling. Pumpkin muffin topped with orange frosting was the best of the bunch. Very sweet and the frosting was amazing. Strawberry Shortcake muffin was really good, filled with strawberries and cream. Gingerbread muffin was filled with cream and looked amazing but ended up being a little dry for my taste. The others thought it was the best one. Mint hot chocolate topped off the trip and it was pretty fantastic. Two muffins and a hot chocolate for $6 was pretty awesome too. read more

They open at six in the morning. If you are awake at six in the morning, drive there and consume this perfect food. You'll be happy for an entire day. Situated in an adorable building on a peaceful corner, the Winchester location is a place of pure joy. The gingerbread muffins are amazing, the carrot cake muffins are amazing, and, well, everything else they sell is amazing too. And at under two dollars per muffin, I do not believe there is a better deal around. Considering you could drop twice that amount for a boutique cupcake that's half the size, you owe it to yourself and your overall sense of right and wrong to drive to Winchester and eat these muffins. Always a great experience. GCC always satisfies. I'm always a hero when I bring a box of their goodoes home to the family. My favorite is the chocolate dreme. The bananas creme is a close second. My wife LOVES the pumkin when it's in season and the gingerbread or the carrot when it's not. I always make sure to remember a Boston cream for my mother in law. First time at this location though my friend and I have been to their other location in Wakefield plus local coffee shop near us carries some of their muffins. The young ladies behind the counter could not be more friendly and helpful. I decided on an apple muffin and a orange almond muffin. I was very tempted by their loaves! I'm a big fan of gingerbread cookies and asked if they were hard or soft. The young lady said they're generally hard but can be soften by wrapping them in a moist paper towel and microwaving them for 10-20 seconds. I opted to still take one even though I prefer them soft. The gingerbread man was calling my name so I broke into it when I got in the car. Much to my disappointment, it was very hard and not as tasty as I had expected it to be given the name of the bakery. I have had their gingerbread muffins which are my favorites...perhaps that's the fame to their name. The apple muffin was for the hubby which he moaned while eating it so thumbs up for that. I had the edges of the orange almond muffin and kept the rest for the next day. From what I sampled, I would give mine a thumbs up too. I'll stick to the muffins and loaves next time! read more

I was at the Winchester store around 1:30 Wednesday, 9/18/19. The woman who served me had a horrible attitude, I will not be back. She made feel like I interrupted her day. She made a loud huff when I decided to get a 4th muffin and even more attitude when I paid cash and she had to make change. Her co-worker must have noticed her attitude as well since she commented "Just another hour and a half". The muffins are good but they get a 1 star since there are many reviews mentioning bad service and it continues. I received a beautiful ginger bread house as a gift at work. I loved it so much I admired it on my desk all season and didn't have the heart to eat it. It was really just adorable. I checked out the website and eventually made it over to the bakery in Winchester. I wish I had my camera with me today. The aftermath of me devouring the strawberry shortcake muffin-cake was like the definition of "fat kid loves cake." Powdered sugar all down the front of my coat. Whipped cream on my nose and crumbs everywhere. In short, it was ridiculous. And oh yeah, I didn't even make it home with my muffin-cake. I only got as far as the car. Gingerbread Construction Co. has perfected the muffin-cake hybrid as far as I'm concerned. I call it a hybrid as muffins usually aren't cream-filled, frosted affairs and cupcakes aren't usually the size of softballs. The only imperfection in my muffin-cake was that the strawberry nestled in the center was still frozen. But the crumb of the cake was so moist and topped off with fresh whipped cream--I wasn't really complaining...In fact, I made the boyfriend get out of the car and get another box of four for his family. It would've been evil not to share, especially considering that each muffin is less than $2! That's an affordable indulgence. The counter staff laughed at him when they saw he was back for more. But if their tiny packed parking lot was any indication, those muffin-cakes sell themselves, flying out of the bakery case faster than you can say "catch me if you can." I wish they would open up shop in Boston proper, but it's probably best for my waistline if they don't...I would most definitely be a muffin-cake junkie. Their muffins are large, not too expensive and they have a great variety....some have the top cap sliced off, than they stuff or layer the stump with filling and slap the cap back on. YUM!.. you can enjoy fillings like Bavarian cream, strawberries and blueberries....... Some muffins only have the tops frosted and some are just good ol' fashioned muffins - in tact with no filling....my favorite standard muffin is their Blueberry (It has fresh berries from Maine) My other favorite: BOSTON KREME MUFFIN!! For only a $1.75, you can buy a HUGE Hand filled muffin - the inside is filled with Bavarian Cream and the outside is frosted with Chocolate cream icing . At the end of my surg rotation, we were searching for the perfect way to tell the OR staff "thank you for handing us scissors, not being terrifying, and always making sure we looked fresh in our sterile gown and gloves" - and as GCC is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the hospital, we took a leisurely stroll here one afternoon to see what the fuss is abt...and to find any gift that would deter one our classmates from bringing in Munchkins, which are abhorrent. GCC is a sight to behold - you walk in and are immediately surrounded by massive muffins, heaps of cookies/brownies, and a few gingerbread men and women for good measure. Oh, and b/c it's 1997 still, they stock roughly every Beanie Baby, or whatever the 2014 version is of those creatures - so if you're looking to make a small child very happy, bring them here and be prepared to open your wallet. Or don't, and be prepared to foot the bill for the years of therapy and being consistently reminded that you that you do not love them. We went for a selection of cookies - at $19.99/lb, it kind of sounds steep, but the cookies are packed with goodies and are somewhat petite so you can actually get 15-20 treats for this amnt of cheddar, making it not a shabby option. We also indulged in six muffins - and when I say muffins, I really mean cupcakes that are kind of muffiny in shape and slathered in all sorts of frostings and filled with everything from raspberry jam to Bavarian cream - nary a flake of bran was in sight, lest you trick yourself into thinking that perhaps you can take the healthy high road here - you cannot - just accept that yes, carrot cake muffins are the breakfast of champions, and never look back. For a single muff it's $2.25, which is a sweet deal given that they are huge and moist. The gingerbread cookies ($2.5/each) are tender and spicy - though not for your favorite gender neutral colleague, as you are given the option of gingermen or gingerwomen (rude, obviously #wellesleyrideordie). They also have coffee, which didn't appear to be anything to write home abt, and actual gingerbread houses, which will run you between $26-40. Overall, a random, delightful surprise. read more

Dian C. mentioned how good the muffins here are recently in passing so I figured I would see if they lived up to the hype. They have so many flavors, it's overwhelming. I settled on two chocolate raspberry, one strawberry short cake and one banana and walnut. I refrigerated them for a few hours before boarding a flight back to DC. Much to my relief, they stayed intact. The only thing muffin-like about the strawberry short cake muffin is the shape. The muffin itself is yellow cake. They cut off the top, fill it in with strawberries and whipped cream and put the top back on. Unbelievably good. The cake is so light and fluffy. Not quite a cupcake but not quite a muffin. Same idea for the chocolate raspberry muffin - chocolate cake stuffed with raspberries and whipped cream. The cake was incredible. I'm so bringing more back from my next trip. The banana walnut was the only traditional muffin. It was not nearly as good as the ones with whipped cream. Stick with the "dessert" muffins. read more

(does anyone else find it strange that while the muffin top of food is often held in the highest regard, when it comes to fashion, muffin tops are looked down upon??) Each muffin baked to perfection so as to leave that crispy apron that circumvents your perfectly formed, slightly crisp muffin bottom. Oh the bottom of the muffin so often overlooked and left to be the lesser part of the muffin. Your flavors are a cornucopia of deliciousness ranging from the traditional like blueberry and orange cranberry to the interesting like lemon to the playful like chocolate, gingerbread or carrot cake. Are you a cupcake fan that needs your frosting fix? No need to fear. Some of these muffin tops aren't frost, but instead, the very tip of this muffin is sheered off, the top, injected with the appropriate confection. The top is then placed back to leave the muffin appropriately filled and topped. Gingerbread, you have swayed me. I am now a proponent of muffins, but no ordinary muffins...your muffins. Your namesake muffin made me crave a hot cup of coffee, my couch, a blanket and either my book or a sappy movie, Love Actually, perhaps. These treats have a killer combination of tasty, fresh, not TOO sweet, and affordable. I got 6 of them for me and my coworkers for 10 bucks. Flavors I tried were Blueberry, Apple, Strawberry Shortcake, Chocolate Raspberry, Lemon Poppyseed, Gingerbread. There was not one of them that I didn't like. I tried at least a quarter of each. The most impressive was probably the strawberry shortcake. A light fluffy almost angel food cake muffin with real strawberries and a light cream. If you can make the trek out to Winchester or Wakefield, pick me up a muffin. read more

The girl behind the counter was a little blase and didnt give recomednations, but did sigh through explaining to me what each muffin was Gingerbread cookie - soft and yummy with the perfect amount of frosting Gingerbread muffin - It was a hit with my dad and uncle -soft gingerbread flavor and yummy frosting Chocolate Dream - this was like a soft chocolate cake with an amazing buttercream frosting- much more like a cupcake than a muffin - delish! Carrot Cupcake - I think I will just go ahead and call it like I see it. This was carrotcake with sweet cream cheese frosting. It is impassable as a muffin for breakfast but amazing and overwhelms as a carrot cake for dessert. Unsanitary is completely unacceptable! Hate to be the bearer of bad news... But went to a potluck brunch today where one of the girls brought muffins from this place. I have had one of their muffins before and remembered them being good so I was excited about having one. I grabbed a Raspberry Blueberry. Took one bite - pretty good. Because the muffins are huge, one of the girls used a knife to cut hers in half - and thank goodness she did - these two long dark hairs were going through the center of her muffin! As she pulled her muffin apart, these hairs just got longer and longer - like they were holding her muffin together. It was really not a pretty sight. So I promptly threw the rest of my muffin out - kind of a bummer because, like I said, it was pretty good and I was looking forward to it. Everyone else who had a muffin threw theirs out, too. The muffins may be delicious, but after seeing the hairy muffin, it may take awhile for me to have another one from here. read more

My friend pulled into the parking lot, and all I could see were shelves upon shelves of stuffed animals in the windows. For a brief moment, I thought we were going to attend an intervention for someone who a) is a hoarder of weird stuffed animals, b) is an adult who acts like a 6 year old girl and c) has terrible decorating skills that would make Martha Stewart convulse in shock. We walk in, and to my surprise, I see the glory that is, what I like to call "SPACESHIP CUPCAKES". Essentially muffins with the top sliced off, stuffed with sweet fruit and light frosting, and the top thrown back atop the mountain of frosting. Absolute culinary genius. Sprinkled with some confection of sugar, be prepared for some messy eating. The true sign of good food. After 5 minutes of brainstorming, I finally figured out how to eat these monsters in a semi ladylike fashion : spaceship outer ends, inner filling, top, bottom spaceship. Boom. With all the sugar, I still ended up looking a little Whitney-Bobby afterward, but hey, the things you sacrifice for good food. Like your dignity. Strawberry shortcake, chocolate buttercream, banana cream, and lemon poppy are hits, but I'm sure you can't go wrong with anything here. This place is a decadent treat and has a LOT more to offer than gingerbread! I really enjoy their muffins with cream-cheese icings and fillings. It makes them extra-special! My personal favorite has been the lemon poppyseed with a zesty lemon filling and powdered sugar on top. But, it looks like they have some new flavors that I need to try (like Strawberry Shortcake with fresh strawberries and whipped creme filling). The apple-spice looked really good, and had an apple pie-like filling in the center. Yummy! I was taking back something to a friend in Stoneham, and I was racking my brain to choose a "thank you" gift for her, since she's expecting. Driving down the street, I saw the Gingerbread Construction Co and Jenny N's ROTD flashed through my head. Now, I've had their muffins before - Someone always manages to bring them to an event or social function... But I've never entered the realm of the gingerbread. First things first, they have bags of candies lining the wall on the left. I'm a candy freak - basically unstoppable around fruit flavored worms and waxy pill-shaped gummies. Scanning to the right, I saw huge muffins lined up like cheerful little soldiers in the gleaming glass case. I grabbed a gingerbread muffin loaf for said friend, and chose four delicious muffins for myself, my hubby, and my (now) fat ass. Strawberry shortcake, lemon poppyseed, chocolate something, and the namesake gingerbread. All were delicious, but the lemon wasn't as awesome as the rest. I still ate it, even if it was a little dry. Strawberry never made it home, and gingerbread never existed (at least that is what I told the hubby). The GCC also has a killer iced coffee, so it's a one stop sweet shop. The carrot cake muffin is to die for, with a great Cream Cheese Frosting. Not all of the muffins have Cream Cheese frosting. Some are just plain. I think a six pack of muffins is $9.99. Do believe the hype - these muffins are awesome and totally worth the trek out to Winchester. I was somewhat confused at first, trying to figure out if these err more on the side of muffins or cupcakes, until I said "screw it, who cares what you are when you're this delicious." Walking into that shop I was almost overwhelmed with all my choices, but I ended up settling for the banana cream and I did not regret it one bit. I also tried a bite of the almond and orange - a winning combo in any pastry, although this muffin was notably missing the serving of cream sandwiched on top of it as mine had. I also loved how unpretentious this little shack was. With all these gourmet cupcake shoppes around with walls decked out with trendy designs, it was kind of comforting to walk into an unremarkable store full of beanie babies and giant gingerbread people. I'm torn between how much I want them to expand to somewhere closer to Boston and loving how unabashedly suburban it is in all its current glory. But hey, as long as the muffins are this good, can you really complain if word gets out? read more

I decided to give this place another shot. This time before Christmas so I could get an actual Gingerbread house. I found out last year that they only make them up until Christmas; I went the following week. They are EXPENSIVE! For a small "medium" gingerbread house it costs $55! And 4 muffins cost $10 with all sales being final. The gingerbread is soft and tastes good, but it's nothing special. The parking is terrible. They are situated right on a corner of a small, but busy intersection with only a dozen spots or less. I suggest going to a local bakery or Spinellis in East Boston. read more

Now, I'll admit that I'm one of those people who usually just eats the muffin tops (you know it's the best part!), but these muffins are entirely delicious, moist, and fresh. They still taste great after a couple days too. I've tried a variety, my faves: gingerbread, carrot, and lemon poppyseed. They do have a fabulous array of muffins (I wish they were labeled tho) and at times, I have had a pretty informative server but most times, it seems that they are not at all interested in me =( and I'm a pretty interesting person =D so sad for them ! It has never been a place I stayed to have coffee and a muffin but one day, I found the cutest bunni shaped deck of cards and they had me - hook line and sinker peeple! so about those soft, moist muffins - they are not super cheap but they are super worth it. 4 stars for the Chocolate Dreme "muffin" alone. I say "muffin" because the "muffins" are actually massive cupcakes if we want to be honest here. Massive, delicious cupcakes. My boyfriend and I got four muffins to try the different types. Chocolate Dreme - Amazing. Some of the best chocolate cake and frosting I've EVER tasted. Boston Creme - Very muffin-ey (which I guess it's supposed to be). Not the best frosting on top. I wasn't a fan. Strawberry Shortcake and Banana Creme - Both awesome and very similar. Moist cake, fresh fruit, light and fluffy cream. Delicious. If the delicious mupcakes (muffin-cupcakes) weren't enough, the store is adorable, quaint and the service was amazing. You've never seen (or tasted) a muffin like this! Seriously, these are the best muffins I've ever had. Actually, they're more like a hybrid of muffin and cupcake. They are huge, soft, cake-like, and dare I say, almost light (as far as muffins go) with incredible fillings like real whipped cream, fresh strawberries, raspberries or bananas. And they don't just shoot some cream into the bottom of the muffin like a twinkie - oh no - they slice off the top, lovingly hand fill the muffin with fresh ingredients and reapply the muffin top - YUM! My absolute favorites are the gingerbread (surprise, surprise) and the pumpkin raisin. The cake is so moist and filled with big plump raisins and then it's frosted with a delicious orange cream cheese frosting. Seriously, heaven! They are a bit pricey, but worth every cent. When I do splurge and bring a box into work on special occasions, everyone goes crazy! They do also sell cookies, brownies, candy, gingerbread houses, loaves (some of the same flavors as the muffins) and hot and cold beverages. read more

This place is AMAZING!! I was turned on to GCC many years ago when a boss who lived near the shop brought in muffins for us as a sign of appreciation. I dare say, I'd rather have one of these muffins over a bonus..they are that good! I have since turned my husband on to them. We don't go here often as our waistlines would rival Oompah Loolmpah proportions, but we go here now and again on our way up to New Hampshire. It is very close to the Jordan's Furniture in Reading so if you are in the area, definitely seek it out. My favorite is the Carrot Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting. The frosting is perfect, not overly sweet. The carrot cake is moist and decadent. On our last trip I had the Banana Creme which was also very yummy. In the past I've had the Strawberry Shortcake and the Chocolate Dream..both extremely good. These "muffins' rival just about any cupcake out there, and I highly recommend them!
