We discovered this restaurant pre-COVID when we lived in WA. I won a hotel stay in Salem and we drove around the area over a long weekend. We discovered The Glockenspiel and fell in love with the burger. It was one of the best burgers we ever had. We moved to CA in 2020 and did not return to WA until 2021. We drove and I planned our itinerary to include a stop in Mt. Angel. We had no idea there were new owners. We were just glad they were open and the burger was delicious as always. We came back again in 2022. This time for dinner. We both had the chicken schnitzel. We substituted the mashed potatoes for spaetzle. Everything was wonderful including the red cabbage. Both of our plates were empty when we were done. We hope they continue to stay open so we can stop by again in 2023. read more

They're back! After being closed for a year and a half, and changing hands to new owners, The Glockenspiel is back! I was just lamenting to my wife, while driving to Mount Angel, about the loss of The Glockenspiel. To me, the Oktoberfest celebrations just wouldn't be the same without it. Thus, I was overjoyed to find them reopened, revived from the dead only six days prior to our arrival! Wasting no time, we made it our first stop, grabbing a (lightning quick!) bite to eat before heading out to enjoy the rest of the Oktoberfestivities! With no wait to be seated, and our order placed and presented in front of us in *7 minutes flat*, we were pretty stoked. My wife ordered the Kohlrouladen, or stuffed cabbage rolls, a perennial favorite of hers, which hit all the correct flavor notes: earthy, hearty, savory, atop a bed of mashed potatoes. I sampled a few bites, and was similarly enamored with it, but my Bratwurst Sandwich was still the clear winner for my taste buds. Hidden within a massive Kaiser roll, and garnished with an incredibly delicious mustard aioli, it was absolutely perfect. A dash of stone ground mustard, as you do, only further enhanced it! Additionally, the care and attention paid to us by our server (Justin or Dustin, I can't recall exactly) was personal, personable and precise. He spent several minutes entertaining our questions about the revival of the restaurant, the changing of ownership, and even the re-hiring of most of the former cooks and servers, assuring us that things were back to normal, and not in any danger of being changed by the new management - all good things! So after an 18 month hiatus, and being revived from the dead despite the ravages of COVID, Mount Angel's signature, showcase restaurant, like the storied namesake Glockenspiel above it, is back to running like clockwork once more! read more

My brother in law loved our visit to Autobahn 101 in Lincoln City he wanted to try Glockebspiel in Mt Angel. I completely forgot the previous time I visited the food was just okay and they had staffing problems. Now 2 years later we decided to go back. My party of 4 was super hungry. We drove from McMinnville to Mt Angel to have German food. We called ahead to make sure they were open. We were told they would be open until 7:00 pm. At 2:00 pm after the 45 min drive they were closed. The waitress came out to tell us she was the only server and she couldn't handle anymore. I felt bad for her. This was the same experience we had 2 years earlier. We told her we would sit at the bar and wait until she was ready. After a 15 min wait which was not that bad she took out order. We ordered a bratwurst sausage on a bun with sauerkraut. The sausage was undercooked and the sauerkraut was not sauerkraut. It was very garlicky not traditional sauerkraut it was very confusing. We also ordered cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef and onions, side of mashed potatoes and garlic toast. This dish was actually very delicious. The final dish was super disappointing. The fondue cheese dip was good but the bratwurst was dried out. When we left the waitress apologized and thanked us for coming. read more

Love this place! Came down for Octoberfest. The Glockenspiel is the cornerstone of this event for me. Stopped in for dinner during my visit and had a plate of delicious cabbage rolls. But even better than the food was the kindness of the staff. A very pleasant experience. read more

Yesterday was our first visit back to The Glockenspiel since before the start of COVID and the restaurant's ownership change. We were pleasantly surprised, and had a good experience. We started with a course of cheese fondue, because that's just what you do at German restaurants, right? The cheese was delicious, with a nice flavor mix of swiss and white wine, but the supply of bread and fruit was quite sparse; so we did have to ask for more bread. All of us in our party enjoyed our main courses -- three of us got pork schnitzel, and one got cabbage rolls. The panko crust on the schnitzels was crispy and well seasoned, and the accompanying mushroom gravy had deep flavor. The mashed potatoes and cooked cabbage paired nicely. Portions were so large that most of us had to get to-go boxes. We also enjoyed our desserts -- I ordered the Bavarian Cream, which came with bits of fresh fruit, and it was perfectly smooth and delicious. A nice cap to a great meal. The one odd thing I noticed about the dessert menu was that they have "German Chocolate Cake" listed... which, of course, has nothing to do with Germany -- it's a recipe which was developed in 1852 by a "Sam German" from Texas. We stopped here on the way home. Mt. Angel is a nice town to visit and now doubly so. This is going to be a destination restaurant for us. If you're looking for great food and a great value this is it. Large portions and reasonable prices compared to what you see in the PDX area. The staff suggested the butternut squash soup and it did not disappoint. I have never tasted better. The fondue is real and I caught a hint of the of the real white wine. Not like most the packages fondue you get at restaurants. The cabbage rolls were more like logs. Huge. And the sauce was real with chunks of tomato and great flavor in the stuffing. The schnitzel was to die for. Huge. Crispy on the outside either meat juicy and perfectly cooked. Stopped here for lunch with a friend after visiting my dad. Quite possibly the best Reuben I have had in the past five years, locally. The corned beef was super tender with great flavor, the sauerkraut had a complementary balance and the bread didn't hurt the roof of the mouth when you bit into the sandwich. The host was friendly and helped me find a table with an outlet for my laptop charger. I ordered their signature burger. The party was fresh and seasoned well, but everything else was lackluster. I don't have a bad recommendation, but this restaurant, while filled with trinkets and German paraphernalia, did not deliver on the food. Came her for my father's 85th birthday! Couldn't have picked a better place as family was coming up from central Oregon. The fondue was really good, but i think the Gustav's restaurants is a little better. The sauce needed a little more flavor or sharpness. Still good. I had the Ementaler Schnitzel. Was really good. Loved the Spaetzle with it. Good broccoli as well. The shrimp and corn chowder that came with the meal was very flavorful. More reminiscent of a Hungarian Mushroom soup than what you would expect. The family tried a number of other things that you can see below. I liked the paprika chicken and the bratwurst plate. A bite of sausage with sauerkraut and spicy mustard was perfect! As far as the deserts go, my personal favorite was the lavender cream brulee cheesecake. Amazing! The German Chocolate Cake and the Marion Berry Cobbler were both excellent as well. This is the only full service restaurant along the festival route and is in the building of the same name (the clock). A very solid, if not amazing place to eat in Mount Angel. This place is right in the middle of town, where the clock tower is located (this it's name). Having lived in Munich for a year, my expectations for German food is pretty high. The schnitzel I had was well priced, I knew what to expect when it was served with a large steak knife. The flavor was good, even if the meat was tough. The sides are what you expect, spetzle, potato salad. The place is friendly, service was quick and everyone seemed happy. Nothing out of place, nothing offensive, nothing memorable. Not a bad stop if you are in Mt Angel, probably not the kind of place you drive out of your way to get to. read more

We are so glad they're back! The food is still great just a simplified menu. The service was great' 5 star all the way.

We have so many memories of big family dinners at this place and it was frequently where we stopped for dinner on our way from Seattle to our farm so when it closed it left a hole in our routine. Children in the family were disappointed - they loved the place so we were delighted that the place is open again. Stopped in for lunch and while the menu was shorter it has our old favorites including cabbage rolls. So, still a great choice for solid German food. It's back on the list. read more

Under new management, new staff and cook as of May 2022. This place has all of the same charm it always had with a ton of welcome changes. We came for breakfast and were pleasantly surprised by a very inspired menu including some European delights. Locally sourced ingredients like Hills bacon, and Silver Falls coffee. The eggs were perfectly prepared, I had over easy, my wife had poached, our son had scrambled, all perfect! The Glockenspiel restaurant is in the center of town in little old Mount Angel, Oregon. Mount Angel is small town just outside of Salem with a German flair that's hosts an Oktoberfest within the city limits. The Glockenspiel has a great variety of German-Swiss style dishes made with fresh ingredients and made to order. The ambience both inside and outside of the restaurant make you feel like you are in a Old European village. Outside of the restaurant, the Glockenspiel clock and hand carved animated figures perform a show above the restaurant 4 times daily. It's definitely cool to see before or after your meal to complete your experience. This was my second visit to the Glockenspiel and both times I ordered the Weiner Schnitzel (and no it's not a hot dog). It's a breaded pork cutlet that's fried and served over a brown sauce. I recommend this dish along with the cheese fondue plate. One day, I hope to be in town in September to celebrate Oktoberfest Mount Angel style. read more

We were excited to see the Glock open again, so we decided to take the family in. We'd called in for reservations at 5 and arrived about 4:55. Once someone noticed us, they had no idea who we were, but luckily they had a large table open (there's 5 of us). It was fairly busy, but right off the bat I noticed 4 or 5 people milling around the kitchen counter. We got the menus and saw that the selection has been drastically reduced. Eventually someone came over and took our order. Then about 5 min later someone else came to take our order. Luckily the first server actually put it in. I went with the pork schnitzel, my wife the spaetzle. I asked if they had anything on tap, but as of Dec 4, 2021 they still dont have their liquor license. We'd ordered the "Glockenspiel Sampler" (aka, fondue). They said they were out of "the braut, but we do have the long stuff." Well, not sure what that meant, but what they brought was good as far as the sausage. The rest was not great. It was just plain bread and a ramekin of fondue that had cooled by the time it got to us. Definitely not worth the $19 they charge for it. Wed also asked if they had a children's menu, which they said no. But they said they had mac and cheese, and they do have kids' apple juice. They said fries came with the mac. The fries came out just after the sampler plate. Our plates came out after a few more min. We decided the dishes were...ok. Not great but not terrible. Then the "mac and cheese" came out. It was spatzel, which 2 of our kids liked but the 3rd wouldn't touch. It would've been nice had they mentioned that detail. They asked if we wanted anything else and we said we wanted a slice of German chocolate cake, which she said wouldn't be a problem. A different server brought the tab and asked if we wanted anything else, which we replied that we'd ordered chocolate cake. She said they were out of everything except the Babarian cream. We decided to pay the bill. I'd been excited to come here with my parents, as it's a regular for them, but we all had just a phenomenally mediocre experience. There weren't many people in, and the food was okay. Not good, not bad, just ... ok. They said they likely wouldn't return in the near future, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone in the area. I ordered the schnitzel with spaetzle, and the best part, hands down, was the roasted veggies. The romanesco was REALLY delicious. But unfortunately, you don't usually order German food for the roasted veggies, and the schnitzel was meh and the spaetzle wasn't the best I've had. Decent German food, wood/lodge interior with lederhosen-dressed staff. We came here for Oktoberfest and expected a wait; given that there were only two of us, we only waited ~15 minutes, so not bad. It was packed otherwise and the streets outside were bustling with people. For dinner, we each got an entree and a beer (can't have Oktoberfest without beer!). Pilsner and Hefe were our choices, with Schnitzel and Meatballs. Each dish came with mashed potatoes, light gravy, and sauerkraut. We each really enjoyed our meals. I got the meatballs and really liked the combination of beef and pork; really juicy, meaty, and flavorful. She got the schnitzel, which was well but not overly breaded, was still moist, and had some nice spices on it. The mashed potatoes were fresh and had bits of potato skin in it, so you know they were good. The sauerkraut was a bit odd and tasted a bit too vinegary, but not terrible. After a beer, we ordered fondue since we really wanted to try it. It came with bits of bread and some apple slices. Although we love cheese, we found that the fondue tasted odd, and sour. Not sure if they added beer or something else to it but we didn't really like it. The waitress was really busy, but was friendly, spoke a bit of German with us, and was as prompt as possible given the huge crowd. The prices were a bit much ($16 for a plate), but this was acceptable since we don't get this style of German food very often. The interior is like a lodge, with large wooden beams, elk horns, a cool bar with a Bull bell, and a fireplace. I ordered the Bratwurst Reuben sandwich and did not like the flavor, presentation or the cost. It tasted too rich for me; a hot dog with a small amount of very creamy sauerkraut. It did not come with mustard and we did not have it on the table... agh! My buddy ordered the sausage sandwich gluten free which he said he did not like. The Fondue with pieces of sliced apple, sliced sausage and bits of bread was just ok. My other friend ordered the Jäger chicken; it looked great and he loved it. The girls split an order of the Wiener Schnitzel and they ate it wet gremlin style. It was scary. Two good orders out of five. I also enjoyed the variety of draft beers available. After many years I decided to try this place again. I took my family here in mid October for a new lunch and at first, it was OK. I ordered a salad and my beau the clam and shrimp chowder. The chowder was AMAZING. And My ranch was really good. But while I was eating my salad, I suddenly tasted something disgustingly bitter. So bad I had to spit out my mouthful of salad. When I looked through it, I found HALF of a beetle. Yes, a beetle. Now, I am not angry. It's produce. It happens. When I showed the waitress she was beyond horrified and offered ANYthing that would make it right. I just asked for a soup instead. I get the soup. And I swear--I can't make this up. I find a HAIR. I'm dying laughing because it's just too damn funny. I hand her the soup with the hair and she's SO apologetic, but I just tell her not to worry about it. I only say, it's too bad because the soup was so good! I also reassure her that I don't need or want anything except an entree that's made without hair or bugs. The entrees come, and they are just fine. The waitress returns and tells me that they checked their salad and it was, in fact, infested with bugs. She comps the two adult entrees and asks that I complete a comment card so the manager would know of the issue when they returned the following day. I did, but I never heard anything. So last weekend my beau and I alone decided to go back. Man. A waitress who acted like she'd rather be anywhere else... a refusal to see the "bar menu" because they were in the process of "changing prices" (but they let us order the meatballs without seeing the menu?). Soup of the day was creamed cauliflower instead of the shrimp and clam like i was hoping for. I ordered schnitzel with mashed potatoes and gravy, and asked for a side of the spaetzel mac and cheese. Waitress was immediately confused. Offered the kids mac and cheese. Yeah, fine. Then she comes back and tells me they are out of mashed potatoes, but I could have roasted. We told the waitress we'd like to leave, but pay for our soda. She said, yeah don't worry about it, and we left. This will definitely be my last time! read more

We went there yesterday 11/23 for lunch and were very disappointed to say the least. We were seated immediately but that is where the good service ended. It took a few minutes to place our order. No beer or wine available. After approx. 50 minutes our orders finally arrived. I had the bratt sandwich and my wife not caring for German food ordered a hamburger cooked medium. While waiting for our food to arrive a saw one server taking all the orders and doing most of the serving. There was one other man wearing a blue shirt possibly the owner walking around but not assisting. He seemed entirely lost or bored. There was one person doing the serving which was probably why service was slow. One girl came in later and started to assist in serving. One order was prepared at a time. The place was not busy, approx five tables with a total of about 20 guests. With three people on the floor and only one person preparing meals one would think another employee would assist. Nope he was on his own. The man I referred to earlier was still looking confused. Now getting to the food. Mine was unremarkable just o.k. My wife's burger was over cooked and the meat was very hard. She ate half and asked for a box to take out to our dog. I removed the meat from the bun so I could cut it in pieces. I first tried just a fork but it was so hard I had to use a knife and fork. I realize this place has just reopened but the new owners do not seem to have much experience in the restaurant business. If the service and food we experienced is commonplace the door will soon lose. We will not be back. read more

It's been awhile since I have made the drive out to Mount Angel, they went through some changes and all the other crap going on, plus the fact we have some good competition for them in Salem at Keizer Station. I decided to go out to Mount Angel and see how the Glockenspiel was doing. Food was pretty good, not as good as I remember I'm guessing new owners and new menu. Small menu with very few German inspired choices, no Apple Strudel????? What the hell?? Need more German/Bavarian choices, luckily you have a server named Kaitlin that is totally awesome and makes the drive out there worth it. Definitely need more Schnitzel choices. read more

A Prost to the Glockenspiel!!! This place was fantastic. Mt. Angel is lucky to have this fine establishment. I've never went to eat at a German restaurant, but now that I've experienced some pretty good eats, we'll be coming back again and again. We had reservations for 7:30 last night. We arrived 5 minutes early and were greeted with a smile. The ambiance here is amazing. The Bavarian decorations, beer steins, and wood trim was awesome. The menu was as German as it gets. Meatballs with brown gravy, hazelnut crusted chicken, pork cutlets rolled and breaded, brats, sausages, reubens, the list goes on. My father got the Wurstplatte, which had 4 different sausages that were absolutely delicious. I sampled 2 of the 4, and what I loved was that it didn't have an overwhelming salty taste like some sausages do. These were mild and full of flavor. They paired perfectly with the German beer we had. I ordered the Reuben, and it was really good. I've had other Reubens, which are delicious in their own way. However this version seemed to be how a reuben should be. The Rye was toasted not grilled, the Sauerkraut was tucked between the meat and the cheese, and it wasn't drenched in dressing. The sandwich was well thought out. The fries that came with it were great as well, tasted like real fresh potatoes. My mom ordered one of the specials which was the Seafood Fettuccine. For $18, she got a large plate of pasta with 4-5 large scallops, flaky salmon and shrimp. Yes, of course I had to try it. It was really good, the pasta was cooked al dente, and the seafood flavor was rich without being too fishy or overwhelming. I have to say the Marrionberry Vinaigrette that my wife ordered with her salad was really good, and a nice change of pace from other vinaigrette's. Service was great. Considering how busy they were, it took about 10 minutes for them to get our drink orders, but at that time we knew what we wanted to eat so we placed our orders. Food came out within 15 minutes. Again, very reasonable for how busy this place was. If passing through Mt. Angel, or visiting for Oktoberfest, you should stop in for a bite to eat. You wont be disappointed with the level of service or the quality of food!! read more

I found this place to be completely charming. But then again, I'm a pushover for servers in dirndls, lederhosen and knee-high socks. What impressed me most is how they handled service during one of the busiest days of the year for the restaurant during Mt. Angel's annual Oktoberfest. Their stroke of genius was to offer a reduced menu containing 10 of their most popular items, rather than their full menu, so they could turn tables quickly. Our party of four was seated for lunch within 5 minutes without any advance reservation. And while it wasn't the kind of day when the server is going to hang out and make chit chat, she was completely on the ball and anything I asked for arrived almost immediately and was served with a smile. I believe our drinks and food all arrived within 10 minutes, but I didn't feel rushed or pressured to eat and vacate either. Please do not go here expecting 'authentic' Bavarian food. This isn't the food my mother-in-law prepares in her kitchen. They say up front, the chef "takes the bounty of the Northwest and gives it a touch of Bavaria." The décor is similarly Bavarian-inspired with warm wood walls and beams, but also modern, clean and cozy. The Glockenspiel is a new restaurant in Mt. Angel, a small town outside of Salem known for its monastery, nunnery, and Oktoberfest. Its fitting that this town has its own glockenspiel, is an old world cuckoo clock, this one goes off every 3 hours. The restaurant itself is very nice inside, plenty of beers on tap, local wines are also sold by the glass or bottle. The food is great, the service is prompt. I had the sausage plate with spaetzle, sauerkraut, and vegetables, that with a pint of their Oktoberfest will put you into a coma. The marionberry cobler ala mode is very, very good! read more

Great flavor and texture. I don't know if I would call it "Large" but it was enough for two hungry people. My wife started off with the squash soup. Great flavors. A little sweet, but not too sweet. I got the curry chicken soup. I think I didn't like it because of the name curry. It wasn't very strong. If they called it "Chicken vegetable soup" I would be like, "Damn, that's some good soup. I wonder what that flavor is." For the main course my wife got the glockenspaetzle. Like a german riff on a pasta primavera. Lots of yummy vegetables, maybe a little heavy on the bell peppers. This is an adorable restaurant. The fondue was very good but you don't get anywhere near enough pretzel bites so make sure you get the extra veggies or sausage or see if you can order an extra order of the pretzel bites( they are good). I had the paprika Chicken Snitzel , I got mine with Spatzel, it was delicious. This food is very rich. My partner had Kase Spatzel, he got it with sausage and loved it. They do have a children's menu. There is an inexpensive bar menu for a lighter snack option. Beer, wine, liquor. They have cute German Knick knacks in their window available for purchase. To my surprise, the Glockenspiel was great! I'm not a huge fan of German food so I ordered a burger, but everyone else at the table ordered something authentic and they were raving about their meals. The burger I ordered was great. The beef was good quality and tasted very fresh. The service was quick, attentive and friendly. I definitely recommend popping in to this little spot. read more

Besides German sausage, I've never before had German food. I thought it was delicious! I love that they use local ingredients from local farmers.. I ate the Wiener Schnitzel and loved it. My husband had the hazelnut crusted chicken and liked it but thought it had entirely too many hazelnuts. I'd say it's similar to southern comfort food. We ate out on the patio and really enjoyed the atmosphere, inside seemed a bit stuffy. The large coo-coo clock was super cool. It was quiet for a Friday night and our service was excellent. read more

We were excited to try this place again after it had reopened. I had the worst breakfast that I've had in a very long time. There were only a few people in the restaurant when we went in. It took a very long time to put our order in. The food arrived at our table cold, 1 out of 6 people at the table got something that was hot. Nobody had butter on their toast so we asked for butter. The butter was rock hard and wouldn't melt because nothing was warm enough to melt the butter. I asked the waitress to microwave my meal and she did but still things weren't hot, no steam came off the food. I wanted to like this place but unfortunately I didn't. We started with fondue, I had the jäger schnitzel my son had the Rheinpfalz Klopse MIT Apfel (German meatballs). The wife had the wiener schnitzel with both the normal brat and a true German style brat. I also had a dark german brew which went perfect with the sausages called a dunkel. I was very appreciative of a great meal with good portions. There are many different styles of beer to choose from and makes for a great dinning experience. If you ever have a chance to get out to Mt. Angel make sure that you stop by here and get a great meal. Parking can be a little bit of an issue if you going during busier times as there is only so much street parking to choose from. Other than that, make the journey and have a great meal. read more
