Saw this place on social media so was excited to stop by since they offered chicken long rice, nishime, and lau lau which can be harder to find. They also have haupia. Hubby got the mixed plate. The Katsu was solid, but the barbecue beef was very tender with good flavor. The local poke bowl had a very generous amount of fish-I got the creamy miso with a side of the lomi salmon. The creamy miso was probably my favorite-good flavor and large chunks of fish, so the extras (avocado, cucumber, etc) weren't really necessary. The chicken long rice had good texture-but definitely a bit on the salty side. Same with the musubi-so would probably pass on these next time. Excited to go back to try more of the menu. Otherwise, solid place for Hawaii Hawaiian food with reasonable prices! Only downside is takeout only currently. read more

Went to this place for the first time and I was disappointed. The first order of business is the Mac Salad. It was dry, it needs more mayo, the macaroni is al dente and it should be intentionally overcooked, no flavor except for the green onion, therefore, not authentic and unworthy to be called Hawaiian Mac speacially on a plate-lunch. The Chicken Katsu sauce is traditionally served at room temperature or slightly warm. This one is cold...epic fail. I'm not going back and spend money in this place. read more

We ordered ahead here for a lunch pickup and I'm glad that we did because there wasn't a ton of room to wait and parking is a little tricky in this area. We still had to wait about five minutes past our order pickup estimate time. We only ordered three items and the total was $48. It seemed pretty steep so I was hoping the portion sizes would match, but they were still quite small. The bbq beef rice bowl was more like strips instead of a typical thin slice/shredded meat like at other Hawaiian BBQ places, so it just tasted a little too tough. The loco moco was decent - it had a sufficient amount of gravy and two eggs. The chicken katsu sando was pretty good but nothing super unique. I think that they probably have some things to work out in the recipes, but I'm definitely willing to come try it again. I'd love to increase my rating if possible! The different poke options all looked really good in the window and in other photos that I've seen, so I do want to give that a shot too. My husband I checked out The Golden Pineapple for dinner last night after wanting to stop in for weeks! The Golden Pineapple is located in Midtown, between 28th and G streets - so street parking is the only option. The Golden Pineapple has 2 sides - one for sandwiches and one for their Hawaiian plates. The inside is on the smaller side, with only a few tables that line the wall. We ordered the Kalua Pig Sami, Mixed Plate with BBQ Chicken and Chicken Katsu, Hawaiian Plate with BBQ Beef and Spam Musubi. We took it home to enjoy and we loved it all - the Mac Salad was perfect and not sweet which is how we like it, the Chicken Katsu was crispy and the BBQ Chicken and Beef were seasoned well. We also really liked the Kalua Pig Sami and I devoured the Spam Musubi! Aside from sandwiches, they also offer salads and soups on one side and poke, ramen and rice bowls on the other side. The Golden Pineapple is a nice addition to Sacramento in general and midtown in particular. Being able to find parking nearby is great. There is a modest amount of seating (four tables with 2 seats each) inside shared between the Hawaiian and deli. We got a BBQ beef plate, a mix plate of kalua pork and tofu katsu, and a 1/2 lb of poke. We were able to dine-in at one of the tables on the deli side. The interior is bright and cheery. Service was great. I was hoping to try the nishime, but it was not on the menu. Hopefully, it'll come back when the weather cools. I was surprised that the beef in the BBQ beef plate was almost like a little steak rather than sliced beef. The beef with the sauce was very tasty. The furikake on the rice was nice. The mac salad was okay. I miss the tuna flavor and it seemed a bit more mayo-ey than I liked. My husband said he got some bites of the mac with tuna, so maybe it needed to be mixed more thoroughly. The kalua pork had the flavor of banana leaves, but could use a bit more salt. The real surprise was the katsu tofu. Holy cow was that good. The coating stayed put and was nicely crunchy and the firm texture was nice. It paired really well with the Japanese style katsu sauce. I'm definitely getting that again. We got some spicy ahi poke on the side to try. It was fine, not too spicy. While waiting on the deli side, we looked at that menu and noticed that under Signature Samis, there were many items on that side that are spillovers from the Hawaiian side. The Golden Pineapple is a great new addition to the neighborhood. For those living within walking distance it's a real treat, for those a bit farther, like me, it's worth the drive and street parking isn't too hard to find. I met up with a friend to try them out and upon entering I was overwhelmed with the options. They have two sides, a deli side with a lot of great sandwich options, and a Hawaiian side with plate lunches, poke and more. We ended up ordering from both sides since it was our first time in and even though we ordered a lot we barely made a dent in the menu. From the Hawaiian side we ordered 1/2lb of each of the six poke offerings for $14/half lb. We also added on a large side of rice ($5), and their Hawaiian Plate with BBQ Beef ($22) From the sandwich side we ordered their Katsu sandwich ($15) and Japanese Egg Salad sandwich ($11). They have a few small two seaters by the window, but it's primarily a takeout spot. The poke was delicious, the six we tried were the Sweet Hawaiian, Shoyu Ahi, Spicy Ahi, Creamy Miso, Kimchee Shrimp, and Lomi Lomi salmon. The shoyu ahi was my personal favorite, but they were all delicious and fresh. I also really enjoyed the kimchee shrimp and would order it again, even though it's not a selection I'd typically choose over ahi. The Spicy Ahi was delicious, but I would prefer it a bit more spicy- still ono though! The Hawaiian Plate came with Lau lau, rice, mac salad, lomi salmon, and your choice of another protein (we chose BBQ beef). It was a hefty portion and easily sharable and I love that they make lau lau. The Katsu sando was flavorful, especially with the wasabi aioli and katsu sauce. When I first tried it I thought there was a nice mustard flavor but Im realizing it was probably the combination of those two sauces that had the tang and bit of spiciness. The Japanese Egg salad sandwich was also good, but isn't an item I seek out often but would be a great option for those who do. The eggs were soft with a good cut that left the yolks and whites a bit separated and the sandwich was packed. I was excited to finally try The Golden Pineapple, but unfortunately it didn't quite live up to my expectations. I'd probably choose one of the Hawaiian chain restaurants over coming back. The customer service was excellent, though. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, which made for a great experience. My husband ordered the mixed plate with BBQ chicken, katsu chicken, and all mac. The BBQ chicken was good, but the katsu chicken was overcooked and had a burnt taste. He thought the mac salad was just okay. He also ordered a Spam musubi, which he really enjoyed. The only downside was that a sticker had been placed over the instructions, so he didn't realize the seaweed was packaged separately until afterward. I ordered the garlic shrimp with all rice. They serve poke bowls here, beef stew plates, pastrami sandwiches. A lot of options. I ordered a Hawaiian plate $22 comes with choice of meat, lau lau, salmon, and Mac salad. 2 spam musubi and a kava drink which came to a total of $40. Got to work excited to eat, opened my plate and COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT :( someone eyelash was garnished in my salmon right on the onion slice front row center. The Mac salad no flavor at all. Rice had a Burnt spot on it. My teriyaki chicken was cold in some corners. Not sure it was supposed to be served hot or cold. Temps were mixed. Lau lau tasted like collard greens with smoked pork. Hate to say but I ended up Throwing my plate in the trash. Later in the evening I shared my musubi and the rice was severely under cooked or old. It was crunchy and falling apart. Sad to say that place was a waste of money. I was willing to over look the hair in my food if it was good in flavor but no thank you. Hopefully they make some changes. First visit here about 30 minutes after opening and there was no line. Couldn't decide if I wanted the pork and cabbage or the beef stew bowl, and the cashier offered samples. Loved the variety and options here. There is the Hawaiian food side with plate or poke. Plus a sandwich side. Today's visit is to check out the Hawaiian Plate that includes a choice of protein, the Lau Lau, lomi lomi salmon poke, Mac salad, rice, and housemade chili water. I decided on the bbq chicken and it did not disappoint. Love that you get a little bit of everything that the Golden Pineapple has to offer. The lau lau was flavorful and the best I've had. For the price point and what was hyped online, I was kinda disappointed. Poke nachos has way more chips than fish at $17 (I can't remember). They ranged from $15-$20 in terms of the Hawaiian options. Service was fast and you can either order on the kiosk or from the person. Seating is very limited but we went around 5:30 and it was empty. Everyone purchased online and took it to go. It gets super hot in there. Their AC was a split unit so if it's during the hot weather or when the sun is setting, I would opt to get it to go. read more

The owners Steve and Keegan are also owners of Kupro's on 21st and Capitol. The restaurant vibe is very clean and fresh and serve Hawaiian local favorite BBQ meats, Garlic Shrimp, Lau Lau, Poke', Loco Moco, Hawaiian Beef stew, Egg and Katsu sandwiches are a few of the Favorites there. I had the BBQ Beef with double Mac Salad and you can tell they are made from one of Steve's Aunties recipes. The Kalua Pork was Fire and not loaded with cabbage like most of the other Hawaiian "Chain" BBQ places and Beef was tender and flavorful. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu ... I was a little bit, disappointed in my experience here. I must preface that I did not try the poke and I think that that might be the saving grace here. The Hawaiian food was good, but not special. I ordered the Kahlúa pork with cabbage, barbecued beef, and my partner had the garlic mahi-mahi. Other three proteins, the barbecue beef was the best, and had the most flavor, but the breading on the garlic mahi-mahi came off in one piece and the entire thing was very unintentionally wet. I think it was originally supposed to be crispy or fried and then slathered and sauce, but I think the timing of it all really worked against its favor. The Mac salad was pretty normal, very tasty. And the rice was cooked well. We also ordered a spam musubi, which was pretty good, I would say above average, but nothing special. read more

Overall dissapointed. Cons: Got the shrimp plate, looked nothing like the pictures and it was fried with the skin on. Taking the skin off you get no flavor or breading. Very small amount of food compared to any other hawaiian place. I didnt try the poke, but based on how the sauces appeared to be solidifying on the raw fish, it was probably for the best, looks like it was left in place in a non refrigerated cabinet for quite some time. Relatively high prices. Not many seats for patrons. Pros: Others dishes looked to be better, given still smaller quantity than you would expect from a hawaiian place. The katsu was nicely breaded and got good feedback from my group. The katsu sauce is very good, sweet with a zesty kick at the end. The staff interacted with were nice. This restaurant just opened up Memorial Day weekend. They do not have their tables and chairs yet I stopped by to look in on May 28and was pretty impressed with their menu. Then on May 29 at 11:15am 2 friends and I arrived with out folding chairsh. The owner/manager was present both days. He's super nice. The employee who took our order was really trying to figure out the register or having difficulty with math in order to make change. The restaurant is set up with sandwiches made on one side and the lunch plates or bowls made on the other side ; although you can order from one side and they pass the food through the little food window to the other side... it's all good. When we arrived, we were the only ones here at 11:15 AM by the time we left at 12 the place good lines of people getting food to go and I was very happy to see that they were getting some good business. I have to keep reminding myself and telling everybody that this is a very very new place and they are going to have to refine before we can give a final review. We ordered the barbecue chicken plate, a Poké bowl and the Reuben sandwich in one of their fountain soda. Unfortunately, the rice was severely undercooked or yesterday's rice. It was hard and nothing like any steamed rice I've ever had before. It tasted like it had been left in the refrigerator, uncovered, or was completely raw or the cook only put in half the water or something like that. That was a bummer because that was included in both the chicken plate and the Poké bowl.. The barbecue chicken is basically a sesame ginger marinated fillet of chicken that is sliced. It's not a lot of meat and it's pretty dry. It's served on small shreds of cabbage. The Hawaiian Mac is decent. It's not as good as some of Sacramento's other Hawaiian barbecue places/chains. The natural soda machine (Jones or whatever it is)!is not my favorite. I'm not sure if that's the reason that the girl that ate the Poke bowl's lip swollen she thinks it is. I think it might've been an ingredient in the Poké bowl but she doesn't normally eat and is allergic to. My friend who had a Poké bowl really enjoyed the taste and said that the tuna was fresh and delicious. She loved everything about it except for the raw rice of course. The friend who had the Rubin sandwich said it was decent. She's a kind of Reuben sandwich snob, so that probably meant it was good. All in all, we had a good time with bringing our chairs and speaking with the owner and need to give this place. Another try once they work out the kinks. read more

Being from Hawaii, this place is truly a gem & such a blessing to have just minutes from my workplace. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed by the friendly staff and warm atmosphere. The beef stew was super yummy and tasted just like the local-style beef stew back home in Hawaii, which brought back a lot of great memories. The grilled mahi-mahi was amazing perfectly cooked, flavorful & fresh. I also tried their poke & it was incredibly fresh & delicious. I really appreciated that they let me sample different options before ordering, which made the experience even better. Everything tasted authentic & made me feel like I was back on the islands. I'm already looking forward to my next visit, especially to try more of their menu items. The sando egg sandwich is definitely at the top of my list. All the food was amazing. The katsu chicken don was by far my favorite because it was super crispy with a good amount of meat that didn't take away from the other flavors inside of the sandwich like the wasabi aioli! All the flavors together was definitely a banger. I might be a little bit directionally challenged because it took me a while to get the musubi all wrapped up haha but after I got that bad bot wrapped up it was great soy sauce flavor with a perfect bit of grill and super good would definitely get again. There is limited seating inside the restaurant so not great for really big groups but if you have 2-4 people in your party it perfect amount of seating but ideal for 1-2 people. They have two sides to order from one which is more sandwiches and the other side more of the poke and plates. I'm definitely coming back for the plates because I haven't gotten my fill of this delicious Hawaiian place. Congratulations to Stephen and his partner (sorry, didn't get his name) for the opening of Golden Pineapple which was a 5 year dream come true and is still a work in progress (more seating especially on the Hawaiian side, catering, events, etc)-many ideas are planned- stay tuned for it will indeed be a destination for homesick kamaainas. The restaurant is divided in two-a deli on one side and Hawaiian food on the other with a clever opening pass thru between for completed orders. Staff is welcoming, cheerful and efficient making the ambiance warm, casual and relaxed. The extensive Hawaiian menu was inspired by Stephen's ohana who owned and operated several restaurants in Honolulu "back in the day" and in fact there is a framed photo of them on the Hawaiian side. What brought us here was the fact that lau lau is always available, it is included in the Hawaiian plate which we tried and also got 4 to take home for later! The lau lau is more "healthy" without the chunk of pork fat, kahlua pig and fish in luscious taro leaves. Why "Golden Pineapple?" I wish I found this place sooner while I was in my 2 week work trip in the area. Luckily I did find it though on my last night there but made the trek to the location. Looks like they've only been in business for a couple of weeks so I think it wasn't on Yelp when I was looking. The location is sort of two places in one with one side being the deli side and the other the Hawaiian side. I chose the mixed plate with the BBQ Beef and Beef Stew which came with one scoop of rice and mac salad. The beef, as you can see in my pic, looked a little burnt but it did not taste burnt. I think it was just the sugar in the marinate that charred. The meat did not have a strong BBQ flavor but it was very tender. I think they should put a little of the marinate on after cooking. I really liked the beef stew which was similar to how my mom makes it but a little more on the sweet side. I can not wait until my next trip to the area. The service was great and the workers were very helpful. The place is really nice in terms of decor, sort of like an old cabin in the woods. I'll likely spend most my time on the Hawaiian side, but it's good to know there's a standard sandwich deli right here too. I have been waiting for a poke place to open near me for a long time, and was pleasantly surprised to find out it would be even more than that. The first time I went I got a poke bowl. Fantastic choice of delicious meats, but I got the spicy tuna. Very good. I also got a combination plate, and the kalau poke and cabbage is fantastic. Great authentic Hawaiian food! It's rare to see this wide of a selection of different menus. Poke, ramen, saimin, plate lunch, and more. Sandwiches on the other side of the restaurant. It's almost like two different restaurants attached to each other. The restaurant was nice and clean, but you can tell they're still setting up the restaurant a bit. I think this is their first week opening, either way, I'm sure they're going to get their system down soon. The owner was super nice and even offered us little free samples of chicken long rice. I got the Hawaiian plate lunch with spam musubi. I'd say the lomi lomi salmon was a stand out. It was like a poke-style cut of fresh salmon with onion and tomato. The spam musubi tasted good, but it was hard to unfold and re-fold. The plastic wrapper that protects and covers the nori seaweed keeps it dry so it doesn't get soggy from the rice, but it's hard to open and roll up the musubi. *Skill issue* I think the instructions are in Japanese. lol. read more

Food was decent and fresh. Got the beef stew lunch plate and lomi lomi pork bowl. Partner said the best thing was the avocado and that's saying a lot when he doesn't even like avocado. That being said, service was extreme prompt and helpful. The place is divided into two, one side for sandwiches and the other for hot foods and poke. Ambiance is very fresh with wood interior. There is also some seating but not a lot so I can see why this place would be good for takeout. We will be back to try the loco moco and something else hopefully. read more

Just ate here for the first time. There aren't tables yet (but signs that they are coming soon) and a wonderful ambiance in the restaurant. Everything is clean and the service was friendly and efficient. I would order ahead online. The poke was the best I have had in Sacramento so far! I thought it was fresher than fish face and offered a good amount for the price. I will definitely be back! read more
