I've tried the usual recommendations, the local favorites, the places everyone swears by. Most of them are good. Very few leave me thinking about them the next day. Ry's does. I skipped the poke nachos on purpose. They seem to be the signature item, but I wanted to judge the fish before anything else. If the poke can't stand on its own, no amount of chips or sauce is going to save it. It absolutely stands on its own. The fish is fresh, clean and beautifully seasoned. I ordered both the regular shoyu and the spicy and both showed something that too many places forget. Restraint. Nothing was drowning in sauce. The tuna was still the star. The cucumber and seaweed salad were what they should be. Crisp, refreshing and balanced. Too often the seaweed salad ends up overly sweet or gummy. This wasn't. Every bite had contrast without feeling heavy. I'm incredibly picky about rice and that's the one place I'd push them a little. It was slightly drier than I'd like. Not bad, just not on the same level as the poke sitting on top of it. Everything else made up for it. Yes, it's expensive. So is just about every poke place worth talking about these days. I'd rather pay for fish this fresh than save a few dollars on a bowl I'll forget before dinner. The funny thing is, I almost don't want to recommend it. Part of me wants this place to stay exactly as it is instead of becoming another spot with a line out the door. But good work deserves to be recognized. This is the first poke bowl in Southern California that's made me stop looking for the next one.

New poke spot in Lomita? That's exciting news!…read more Even though we already have King Poke across the street and the well-known Jus' Poke down on PCH, there's always room for another poke shop. I've heard Rye's Poke is pretty popular in Hawaii and has a few Southern California locations. It would occasionally pop up on my Instagram feed, but I never felt like driving all the way to Huntington Beach or Pasadena. So when I saw their sign go up in the corner spot that used to be the Brazilian pizza place, I was genuinely excited. Since they opened, I've visited three different times. Was it because I loved it that much? Not really. I wanted to give them a fair chance and make sure my first impression wasn't just because they had recently opened. I visited during the soft opening, shortly after the grand opening, and again during off-hours. During the soft opening, the line was long and moving very slowly. When I finally made it to third in line, the employee serving the poke realized they were out of green onions. Instead of grabbing a scoop, he started refilling the container... with a teaspoon. I'm not exaggerating. One teaspoon... two teaspoons... three teaspoons... and on it went. I couldn't help but laugh because I genuinely couldn't believe what I was watching. It doesn't take a culinary expert to serve poke, but a little common sense goes a long way. Eventually, after what felt like an endless number of tiny spoonfuls, the line finally started moving again. The poke itself was good, and I enjoyed my meal. However, I do think it's overpriced. A small bowl came out to nearly $30, which is hard to justify. They also offer a choice between Regular and Premium fish, and I tried both. Honestly, I couldn't tell much of a difference. Unless you're planning to eat the fish completely plain like sashimi, I don't think the Premium upgrade is worth it. Once it's mixed with sauces, toppings, and rice, the difference between previously frozen and never-frozen fish isn't very noticeable. I'd save a few dollars and stick with the Regular. After three visits, I'm still on the fence about coming back. The food is solid, but with Jus' Poke nearby serving much larger portions for about the same price, I'd probably choose them instead. I do hope Rye's Poke succeeds in the neighborhood, but for me, the value just isn't quite there.

When I arrived home after picking up my $300 order I realized that two items (Sassy slaw) from my order were missing. I called the restaurant expecting they would help resolve the issue, but instead I was told that my order had been prepared correctly and that nothing was missing as I had substituted the missing items! Mistakes can happen at any restaurant, and I understand that. What was frustrating was the lack of willingness to acknowledge the possibility of an error or work toward a solution. Good customer service is about addressing concerns respectfully, and unfortunately that didn't happen here. I hope they improve how they handle customer issues in the future.

If you couldn't tell by the pictures the portions are HUGE! We had to get a to go box we were stuffed half way through the meal. This is the best BBQ spot we have ever had outside of our home state Oklahoma! So we would know delicious BBQ and this is the spot!! This will be a must stop every time we come to California now!! They do have a refrigerated self-serve section with sandwiches and onigiri, as well as a table with loaves of bread and buns. The ordering process caught me off guard because I usually like taking my time looking through all the pastries at bakeries. Since everything was behind the counter, I felt a little rushed with people waiting behind me. They have so many options that it can be a bit overwhelming. I just wish it had a little more of that cheesy crust on top. Ham and Cheese Croissant - 3/5: My boyfriend ordered this and thought it was just okay. It was a little small for the price. Strawberry Cream Croissant - 5/5: They're known for this, and now I understand why. The pastry was light and flaky, the strawberries were sweet, and the custard was rich without being overly sweet. I have been going here for over 8 years. It's getting more difficult to discern between the bowl sizes. I am pretty sure they reduced the portions or something. Same bowl size, just smaller portions. Also, absurd charges on extra sauce and toppings that would otherwise come standard at most of poke restaurants ($2 for edamame?). The toppings they do include usually come standard at other places.
