I agree with a few of the other reviews that that service is lacking and the food is just OK. Notably, it is not that flavorful. Which is fascinating, because The Good Egg has this very visible sign right when you walk in praising their 2023 Beacon Readers Choice Awards for the area's best breakfast. This is not an award-winning restaurant or experience. The first feeling I had was that the Good Egg reminded me of a hotel restaurant. The ambiance and decor are generic and stale. The team barely gave a good morning when I walked in, and I noticed they had the same nonchalant attitude toward other guests. I will say that that I was impressed with the cleanliness, and the menu is extensive. with breakfast and brunch served daily. The menu features lighter options, like yogurt parfaits and avocado toast, a variety of Eggs Benedict, hearty skillets, classic breakfast plates, omelettes and Southwestern-inspired dishes, such as chilaquiles and huevos rancheros. They also have pancakes, a Belgian waffle and French toast on the menu. It seems the stuffed French toast is popular. There are also sandwiches, wraps, melts and salads. AWARENESS: Waking up hungry for breakfast on May 2, 2025, the wife and I decided to try The Good Egg because of its close proximity to where we staying, the Point Loma Annex which is directly across the street on Harbor Blvd. * I believe this location was once the Smash Burger but, I'd have to review my past reviews and photo's of this location to be sure. NARRATIVE: The good Egg's front entrance faces Lanning Road and the first thing you'll notice is, they have seating just outside their entrance doors. Once inside, you'll notice a bright and airy interior and extremely attentive staff. The wife and I looked ver the menu and my eyes went directly to their Salmon Eggs Benedict. I'm not too sure what the wife ordered. Our orders were placed with "to go" instructions and we were told it would be a 20 to 30 minute wait so, we headed next door to Starbucks to kill some time. Once our orders were picked up, we headed back to our cottage to check out the eats. My Salmon Benedict looked great and I appreciated the fact they placed the hollandaise sauce in a separate container, not to contaminate the food. My order was very good but my wife had a mixed onion about hers. Maybe it was the time delay from carry out to the actual time we ate or, maybe something wasn't cooked to her expectations. I really don't recall what the issue was, I just know when I returned for the same breakfast the next morning, she declined in joining me. SCENE: The Good Egg is located at the corner of Lanning Road and Harbor Blvd, right next door to the Starbucks. The location can get busy, especially on the weekends when joggers park their cars in the lot and take off for their runs or walks over Harbor towards the wharf. Due to its location on the periphery of Liberty Station, I have never stumbled upon the Good Egg until now. One thing I appreciate about this establishment is that they took reservations for large parties! It's surprisingly difficult to find a brunch spot that'll take these big groups. My party of about 16 people came here for brunch on a weekend morning, and it was already lively with families and patrons. One thing to note for reservations: Your entire party must be present before you can be seated. I understand that, due to our party size, it is difficult to expect amazing service. Our waitress was great, and she did her best to take all of our food and drink orders. It may have been a painful and slow process, but it was super chaotic, so I think she did a great job taking charge. Nonetheless, one small complaint I have is that my water was not once refilled. It's honestly not a big deal, but I finished my water before the food came out and it hadn't been refilled by the time we paid the bill. But again, I know it's difficult to wait on a huge table. My main gripe is with the portion size. I ordered the Classic Benedict with fruit, which came out to be around $16. And for the portion size (see below), I felt rather underwhelmed. Let's just say I finished fast, and was left unsatisfied. Judging from the other plates my party ordered, I think the other dishes may have been a better bang for your buck. Never had an up charge like that for a side, so I decided to pass, which made my dish just ok, not very much flavor. The service staff was nice but didn't really come back to check on us after we got our food, and also would take our small plates away but leave our big plates, despite being empty sitting on our table for the duration of our meal. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. Our waitress, Betsy (older woman with blonde hair & glasses), was rude and unprofessional from the start. I explained that I had a medical condition and asked if I could order from the kids' menu since I cannot physically eat large portions. I even offered to show my doctor's card. Instead of being understanding, she coldly said the owner doesn't allow anyone over 12 to order off the kids' menu. When I said that was unreasonable, her sarcastic response was, "Well, you can tell the owner that then." She then told me I could "just order side items instead," which felt dismissive and unhelpful. After that, she walked off and never came back to check on us. I didn't order anything, and I definitely didn't leave her a tip. I even had to flag down another waitress just to pay the bill because Betsy completely ignored us. This kind of attitude and lack of customer service is unacceptable. One employee like this can easily ruin a restaurant's reputation. Sadly, this experience guaranteed I will never return, and I'll be warning others about the poor service here. read more

The restaurant was empty except for me and the staff with was great for me because I was in a hurry. The waitress was fantastic and ready to answer any questions I had. The star of the menu was (of course) egg related foods. I ordered the Santa Barbara omelette (grilled chicken, avocado) and a coffee. The food was ready within 10 min, fresh and hot. I got the fruit as my side which was a delight, with every major melon and berry (including raspberries!) represented. The food generally tastes great. Unfortunately the service was less than desirable IMO. Some of my food died in the window. Cold over easy eggs on my sandwich is not my jam. Sent it back and it didn't come back out for over 15 min and by that time we had to leave for an appointment after being there over an hour and having 2 other small items we ordered for takeout at the time we made our original order which were now also going to be cold. Through all of this the sever never checked in at our table while my son ate his meal. We needed water and napkins. I ordered the breakfast sliders (3 brioche egg, meat and cheese, I got the sausage) with the country potatoes ( diced russets with peppers and onions). It also came with a slice of watermelon, which was a nice touch. For me, everything was lacking some seasoning. Something other than salt and pepper would have been nice... garlic or smoked paprika would have been excellent. The potatoes could also have been on the griddle a little longer. They needed a little caramelization to bring out some flavor. The brioche was toasted which added some nice texture to the sandwiches. This is our 1st time at The Good Egg and I'm honestly still on the fence about it. We were seated quickly, and the resturant itself is clean and quaint. We ordered food quickly and that's where it started to go downhill a little bit. We waiting over 35 minutes for our meal. Nothing extravagant, but when our food did come only 2 members of our party got their meal and we had to wait an additional 10 minutes for the remaining meals. The food was pretty good though, and the pancakes were delicious. Overall I would come here again but hope that the wait time for our food and silverware would be less. read more

Avacado toast was 4 small pieces of toast with what almost looked like guacamole and a few sprigs of micro greens. All for the hefty price of $15. Not really that great. I have had so much better. There's even counter seating in front of TVs, and a fresh bakery case with croissants, etc. We ordered: blueberry pancakes with sausage patties and a croissant sandwich with ham and fresh fruit. Serving sizes were large and delicious, and we left thoroughly sated and set up for a day of adventuring. The ladies' restroom is the most thoughtful restaurant restroom I've been in. It's decorated with positive art, has nice hand soap (not the standard wall pump), and the best part-- something I've never seen before but think it speaks volumes to how much the owner "gets" us womenfolk-- little pink sanitary bags to wrap used pads/tampons before placing in the plastic bag-lined receptacle. The owners of Oggi's Sports | Brewhouse | Pizza in Point Loma have opened The Good Egg in the suite where a Smashburger used to be located. Both were in the same plaza across the street from Liberty Military Housing. The inside dining area was clean and spacious while two tables were available right outside the front entrance if you wanted to sit under the sun as there was no shade or overhead canopy. The three-page menu featured the standard breakfast and lunch items for a brunch spot. From the list of seven omelettes, The Bird was my pick with hash browns as the chosen side. Shredded chicken, mushroom, tomato, cheddar cheese, and avocado were the fillings. The portion size and quality of the food were decent for the price. Because I sat at the counter near the register, the service was prompt as the waitstaff was hanging out in that area in between watching their tables. While the menu may not be as expansive as some of the local breakfast chains, it's a solid option for a morning or early afternoon meal for residents in that neighborhood. read more
