I'll be honest - the cover picture really sold me on coming here. I looked through the photos and saw that it came with Gulf Shrimp and after coming back from the South, it's hard to find gulf shrimp here on the West Coast. I knew I had to make a stop. Location was easy to find at the end of the roundabout. Parking is street parking, so you might have to circle. Coming on a weekday morning was not busy at all and with the warm San Diego sun, sitting outside in the covered patio was perfect. I will warn you - something about the roundabout makes people's tires go screeching and a loud bang; so it can get pretty loud sitting outside or if you're easily startled. Menu was simple with a good mix of Hawaiian and your breakfast classics. The coffee selection was fantastic and absolutely delicious. They have a good bar inside if you're into that. I opted for the Hawaiian breakfast bowl (15.25) which comes with rice, portuguese sausage, 2 eggs, and hawaiian pico (which was perfect to cut the fatty sausage but also a refreshing kick). I opted for the volcano style with came topped with kalau pork, 1 gulf shrimp and a side of hollandaise sauce (3). They take apple pay, credit card, or cash! A group of us walked up to the host and the host immediately racially profiled us. We were all standing close together, 3 of us are black / 2 are American-Asian. The host asked us if it's going to be table for two even though we were clearly a group of 5 together. A shame in today's society really. I recently visited Daybreak Island Grill for the first time and decided to try the Loco Moco, adding the "Lava Volcano" special (or something like that) for an extra $4. The special was supposed to include kalua pork, shrimp, and a hollandaise sauce. I assumed it would come with a reasonable portion of kalua pork and a few pieces of shrimp. However, when my order arrived, they had forgotten to add the Lava Volcano topping. After I pointed it out, they brought out a small plate with just a single shrimp, a mere teaspoon of kalua pork, and a tiny splash of hollandaise sauce. All of this for an extra $4? Definitely not worth it. As for the Loco Moco itself, it was decent--pretty much like any other Loco Moco I've had. But the "Lava Volcano" addition was disappointing and absolutely not worth the extra cost. Frankly, it felt like a rip-off. read more

What a truly special gem in Ocean Beach! They open nice and early and have chilled champagne ready to serve. The chef came and greeted us and said good morning. Such good hospitality. This place definitely makes you feel good. Our server Irene was so sweet and kind. She took time to go over the menu with us. She answered all of our questions and was attentive to our needs. The patio is dog friendly, and she was kind to our pup. Let's get into the food! The Hawaiian Breakfast was delicious. Generous servings of all proteins. The flavor profiles were so good. Perfectly pan fried spam. Yolky over easy eggs. Rice perfectly cooked. Mac salad nice and chilled not too salty, the shaved veggies in it were yummy. Perfection. A decent no fuss- no muss brunch spot in Ocean Beach. If you're looking for a super refined experience, this probably won't be for you. The main draw for us was the extremely pet friendly patio, complete with anchors to tie your dog's leash to, water bowls, and even a special pet meal available on the menu. For our first visit my husband ordered the biscuit and gravy plate that included sausage and poached eggs. The biscuits and gravy were just average along with the sausage. I ordered the crab melt which was basically a grilled cheese, tomato, avocado with a sprinkle of crab. Perhaps renaming the dish would better describe it as crab is no way the first ingredient. The restaurant itself has a cute vibe but could use a good cleaning and some updating. The wait staff was friendly and helpful. Overall this was just a very average place. We had the loco moco volcano style, it was amazing, had tons of flavor and was very good. At the time we went they were only serving scrambled eggs but they worked really well in the dish. We also tried the kalua pork sliders and they were good too. We got the basic fry's with the sliders and they were basic but ok. Service was ok but nothing great, we had a 25 min wait to be seated. The Benedict looked great but was definitively missing some seasoning. The banana bread french toast is delicious and I love their fried breakfast potatos. This is not the place to go if you are looking for an attentive waitstaff. You'll be lucky to get noticed when you walk in to get seated or get your bill. Got the kalua pork eggs benedict and it didn't disappoint at all. Really good flavor and surprisingly not too salty as most kalua pork dishes can be salty but this was spot on. Boy friend got the Hawaiian bowl with portuguese sausage and It had good flavor as well. Portions were good for the value. The affogato coffee is a definite must!! We were on vacation in Ocean Beach with our dogs. We were looking for dog friendly restaurants that were within walking distance from where we were saying. We happen to be looking for breakfast, so we decided to take a short walk to this restaurant. We were greeted by a very friendly woman that sat us in the patio area. They had hitches for the dogs, and they even brought them water. The menu had a mixture of Hawaiian, American and Mexican breakfast items. Which is exactly what we are looking for. They even had bowls for the dogs with their own menus. My kids ordered the pancakes which were delicious. They came with a dollop of whip cream my husband order the croissant sandwich and I ordered the breakfast burrito and we got a side of spam. The green sauce that came with the burrito was so good. We did ask for some extra hot sauce on the side and my favorite was the Hawaiian Hot sauce. This restaurant does get quite busy and there are a lot of people with dogs. So make sure that your dog is friendly because they will most likely be greeted by the other doggies. I did not make it inside the restaurant, but the patio was very nice. I was seated next to the window with the speaker for the music so it was pretty loud , however I didn't want to complain. When we're in Ocean Beach will definitely be back again. Great little hawaiian restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. We are glad we found this place. We initially came here because they are dog-friendly and even have a doggie meal too. We ended up loving the breakfast here so much that we ate here two days in a row on our trip to SD. The iced coconut latte is so yummy and they have one of the best loco moco I've ever tasted! I came here for breakfast during my visit to San Diego. Katie and Mark were really nice. They greeted me and were very friendly. I wasnt from the area so they talked to me about a lot of local places I could check out. I had the Daybreak Special with sourdough bread and Portuguese sausage with eggs. It was really good. The potatoes were crunchy and soft in the inside just the way I like them. Katie and Mark were very attentive. They would ask if everything was good and if I liked the way it was cooked. EASILY the WORST dining experience I've ever had. I really don't understand how they have 4/5 stars on Yelp. We arrived around 10:15am stood there for about 10 mins till I stopped one of the two waitresses that kept passing by to put our names on the little clip board....they said it would be a 10 min wait, however it was more like a 40 min wait as we didn't get seated till around 11:15am....the waitress comes takes our order and we FINALLY get our food around 11:45am....sadly the food was NOT worth the wait. I got a sandwich and it had the SKIMPIEST ration of meat in it....they literally put the smallest ration possible of pork then added ONE slice of bacon and topped it with cheese and put it in a bun...then the Mac salad....it's literally macaroni noodles with Mayo. Nothing special. It took EVERYTHING in me not to say something about how horrible the service was...but my fiancé was there and told me to chill. Honestly It was SO bad it was almost insulting. They were under staffed, the food was pathetic 10/10 would NOT come again and yes you WILL regret the money and time spent at this establishment.
