So they are probably a fine place under normal circumstances. ********* They are not such a fine place under abnormal circumstances. The day we showed up there was a great big sign on the front door: HELP WANTED - ALL POSITIONS. That is never a good sign to see. * * * * * We sat on the front porch outdoors. There was a strange smell we could not identify ... But it was definitely a "wrong" smell. It wasn't sewage or garbage. It wasn't wood rot. It only showed up when the wind was not blowing. Then we realized what it was. We were sitting on a wood porch. Something had died under the porch. We were smelling five or six day old animal carcass. Okay. That can happen to any restaurant - and it is not their fault. But if the smell is strong enough to be markedly noticeable by customers ... And the smell had been there for days ... Why didn't someone go under the house and pull things out? * * * The food we got was - with one exception - mediocre. I got a pretty good chicken and dumpling soup. Everyone else more or less picked at their food. My hamburger steak with gravy and onions was completely ho-hum ... And that is a dish I generally love. The Texas Toast had the bad taste of when the butter-grease sop you use to soak the Texas Toast had gotten too old and funky. It was late in the day when we had our lunch. The Toast Sop had probably been left over from previous days. The rancidity was subtle - not noticeable at table But clearly noticeable when we got up to leave the restaurant. * * * We waited forever for our food. My honest belief is that the restaurant was short-staffed ... Everyone was struggling to handle the Sunday brunch and lunch crush No one had time to make new sop, put a lot of attention into the hamburger steak or go crawling around underneath the house. The nice people working there were being pushed to the limit. I suspect if I came back when there wasn't a labor shortage This might be a lovely place. Great wine and beer selection by the glass or bottle for wines. You can get buckets of beer to sit and enjoy the lice music on Gracie's back yard patio. Tonight was the Clutch Kings but check in with them to see who's playing. Cocktail selection includes Margs and a tidal Wave made with Jim Beam and lemonade. I have been going here for years and years. Since the place was taken over by a new owner, there have been some marked changes. First, although the food quality is about the same, the portion sizes are hit and miss. We had a chicken fried steak last night and it was half the size of the original chicken fried although it was very good. The biggest thing is the service. I rarely get prompt courteous service like we used to. Takes forever for them to acknowledge you and once they do, the process takes forever. We went on a Friday night and the dining room was half empty........15 minutes to get drinks, 20 minutes to order, almost 40 minutes to get food with a half empty restaurant. I'm not a local to Bastrop but I love small towns and great Mom & Pop places. I searched the YELP app for a good place to eat that was casual and a place that wouldn't break my wallet. I chose this place and I'm sure glad I did. I went in on July 28, 2025, on my birthday. I saw that they have daily lunch specials advertised in the quaint and comfortable dining area. But I really like salad so I decided on the spinach salad and it was SO DELICIOUS. Probably one of the absolute best I ever ate. Then I had a heaping bowl of homemade peach cobbler a la mode. It was just as impressive. The food being brought out to the other customers looked and smelled amazing. The ladies serving were all very friendly and the place was clean and had a homey feel to it. They also have a covered patio but I sat inside due to the summer heat. I would enjoy the patio on a nice fall day. I will definitely be back every time I visit this charming town. Started off really great, but then about a half hour in we realized we had made a mistake. As soon as we entered we were seated immediately and given time to look over the menus. We ordered our drinks first which came out pretty quickly. Afterward I ordered a burger and my fiancé ordered a sandwich. Nothing fancy. About 30 minutes passed and we were starting to get pretty antsy. Especially after the fact that the table of 4 that came after us had just been served their food before us. The only good thing about this restaurant was the music, which the band did a pretty nice job for the 1 hour and 20 minutes it took to get a bowl of soup, a sandwich, and two burgers... The food was inedible...this was my ham and cheese. You can't see the food for all the mayonnaise they smothered on the sandwich. Well it's consistent, because you could taste it either! They did take it off the bill, and offered another substitute...no thanks, I don't have the time. I've eaten here several times and I usually have very good food and service here. This time was no exception. I particularly like their chicken fried steak. Their mashed potatoes are very good (made with real potatoes), as well. Their iced tea is always fresh (I tend to judge lots of restaurants on their tea). The location is in downtown Bastrop, so parking can be tricky during busy times. They have both indoor and outdoor seating areas and on weekends they have live music on a small stage outside. I only gave them a 4 this time because the restaurant was stiflingly hot. So hot I couldn't finish my burger. Granted it was unusually warm that day, but the restaurant should not have been allowed to get so hot. We also had an issue with flies buzzing about the table. Let me start with, what a CUTE building. I loved the atmosphere. We were greeted with smiling faces as soon as we walked in and told we could sit anywhere inside or outside, super cute patio area, and we chose to sit inside.
