The staff were friendly and service relaxed. They were attentive to little things like filling water glasses and replacing flatware and plates. We tried the charcuterie board which featured local cheeses, honey, jams and a very interesting spreadable sausage. The goat cheese pierogis were awesome. We were less enthralled with the Indian vegetarian plate but the dishes were well prepared and it was more our taste than anything else. We would definitely come back to try some of the other offerings as it was hard to choose. The ambience is very cozy in a 19th century farmhouse. First off, I don't want anyone to think this is a hatchet job. My family has eaten at the Colby Hill Inn many times in the past and have been quite pleased. This Thanksgiving was not one off those times. The staff generally speaking was indifferent and not at all welcoming. The barely spoke or smiled. We ordered the meat and cheese board which I thought was fine but my daughter and wife thought the meats were old. The squash soup was served, and it had and oily layer that even I noticed before the soup even was on the table. It was if the ingredients had been sitting and had separated. My wife stirred it up and she said it was OK. My salad was 99% arugula with very little dressing or much else. Not inspiring. My daughters perogies were of poor quality. We all agreed on that. The main course consisted of white meat was grisly turkey that was not at all tender or moist. The dark meat was very dry and not at all appealing. It was our estimation the turkeys were cooked the day before and reheated. The amount of gravy was Spartan. The potatoes, veggies and cranberry sauce were jumbled on the side of the plate. When my wife said something they said they would cut her some "fresher pieces" The pumpkin pie my wife ordered was fair. My chocolate cake was stale. Not just stale but 3 day old variety stale! How they managed to get both sides of the cake stale is a true accomplishment. Usually when you cut off a piece one side at least will be fresh. The coffee was luke warm to boot. They took $25 off the bill and gave us 4 small slices of what appeared to be turkey loaf. There was no salt or pepper on the table which in light of the quality of the food was a presumption on the part of the chef he should not have made. We spent close to $400 and could have had a better meal at Red Arrow diner for around $75. Ok the view would not have been as good. The staff would have been friendlier. read more

The servers seemed to be stuck up and rude in a way, even though we dressed to impress for the occasion (birthday which we told them), so I'm not sure what the issue was. We had a midweek dinner here for our anniversary. Atmosphere was quiet and cozy and the menu yummy. The waiter/inn manager was polite but not particularly friendly. Our wine and perogi appetizer came pretty quickly and were delicious. However, our entrees (ordered at the same time) took forever. There were only 4 tables so not sure why. My risotto was amazing but my husband's monkfish was SO overly salted. Then the waiter disappeared again while we were waiting for the check. My husband found him out at the front desk and handed him a credit card. Overall it was a very long, expensive night. read more

There are some restaurants that you walk away from feeling absolutely blissful -- satiated, cared for, indulged. Don't expect anything close to this from Colby Hill Inn's Grazing Room. It was the worst dining service experience I've had since years before COVID. Until management is overhauled, do NOT waste your time nor money. The other night I had family in town and so we aimed for a special night out at the Grazing Room. Aside from the biscuits and chowder (which were a delight), there were no praises to be found. Close to $500 later, we had consumed mediocre meals that arrived not as described (I see you rainbow chard vs. the anticipated broccolini) and lacking any sort of gold-level credentials. I get why it may be. The service industry has been clobbered during and after COVID. Still, what we experienced felt personal as we were belittled as patrons and steamrolled with brash interruptions multiple times throughout the meal. Passive aggressiveness was palpable. Service was generally slow and haphazard -- helicopter parented by the innkeeper himself, who admittedly may have decent sommelier-like knowledge, but rose to grand heights as the rudest and most pretentious server we've ever encountered. In fact, the absenteeism you sometimes vibe from a QSR would have been greatly appreciated versus our experience at this "fine" institution. Why he was passing drinks and shuffling plates while not rising as a leader and chief customer ambassador, I can only begin to surmise. Our conclusion following the dizzying dinner was that the establishment is mismanaged. A love for customers and their needs is antithetical to the current ethos imparted by its leader, who, by the way, didn't even look up from his smartphone as he uttered a questionably authentic "good evening" as we strolled outside to the beautiful grounds under a near full moon. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and detour to Revival for a light year's better dinner. And pleasant experience. read more

Service was exceptional; we asked to take our time and our server perfectly honored that wish. As a result we had a fabulous meal for our parent's 55th wedding anniversary. The food was fresh and inventive. The salads and pierogi were excellent. The main courses were well executed well for a party of six; all meals came out hot and had fabulous presentation. My only slight criticism is that a few of the dishes were a little heavy on the salt, but only slightly. We had a delightful evening and are looking forward to going back at the holidays. Top marks all around. The owners are passionate about every detail. We started our evening with drinks in a sitting room and fire. The bar is full service and has multiple signature drinks. After relaxing, we moved into the dining room and almost had the place to ourselves. (Tuesday nights are pretty quiet.) WE continued our conversation with Farmers' Cheese & Charcuterie Plate. Excellent, actually let's be clear everything is excellent. I had the pheasant cassolette and my wife had the gnocchi (a specialty). Our friends had venison and the gnocchi. Everyone was cleaning their plate. I was unfamiliar with the wine list but after talking it over we selected a very nice Portuguese red. After the quality of the main course we could not resist dessert. The apple cranberry crisp (with house made ice cream) was excellent but the ladies swooned over the chocolate cake. "This is what chocolate cake should be." People is New Hampshire always talk about how far something is from where they are but The Grazing Room is a destination worth the trip. Had dinner, breakfast and lunch here recently while staying at the inn. For dinner I had the watercress salad which was from a local farm as well as the cheese in the salad. My entree was duck which was cooked perfectly and was very tender. I chose the recommended glass of merlot that went perfect with the dish. For desert, I the flourless chocolate cake was delightful. The next morning I opted for the french toast which was very light and airy and came with pure maple syrup and farm fresh bacon that did not repeat on me (a bonus). The breakfast started with a yogurt and fruit parfait. Lunch was a buffet of Indian inspired dishes that had me going for seconds. I am going to be bringing my friends to this place. I really appreciate the quality of the food and the hard work to provide as much locally grown and raised food from regional farmers and fishermen. read more

Let me start by saying we really wanted to like this place. We had heard good things and it's really cute. We came for date night and had high hopes. The good things: the wine list is extensive and reasonably priced, the drink menu is creative, the restaurant is really cute and the window seat we received was perfect. The cheese and charcuterie board was delicious as were the various breads and crackers that accompanied it. There were four people in the restaurant when we arrived so it wasn't busy, yet the service was hit and miss. We were out of both water and drinks several times throughout dinner and at one point I got up and poured my own water. Our cheese board came relatively quickly which was great, but then it was almost an hour after we finished it and it was cleared away before our entrées came. And no service whatsoever during that hour. Not fresh drinks, water, check-in, nothing. Again....not crowded so unsure why. I ordered the beef tenderloin, rare, all veggies no potatoes and Hubby ordered the lamb. My tenderloin arrived medium-well to well done and I had potatoes. When the waitress came by to see how our order turned out I showed her that my meat was definitely overcooked, she offered to re-fire one but we had waited so long for the first one we didn't want to wait. The gentleman at the table across fr also ordered the tenderloin, however he ordered it medium-rare and it also came out well done. He also chose not to send it back because they had waited so long. Hubby's lamb was dried out and tough. Both our veggies were well cooked and tasty. I did not eat my overcooked steak. The male waiter also offered to re-fire my steak. We were talking with the other couple as we walked out of the restaurant and I'm not sure what his wife ordered but she said it was completely inedible. She said they used to go here all the time but then it started going downhill. They waited a while to give it a final chance and this was their last shot. We are trying to decide if we will ever go back to give them a second chance, we just haven't decided yet. Super disappointing. read more

My husband and I spent the night at the Colby Hill Inn and dined at The Grazing Room. The whole experience was delightful. Our room was quaint and cozy with some of the most comfortable pillows I've ever slept on. Our dinner was delicious, from the steak to the brussel sprouts and the frites! My husband had the hen and loved it. We had to bring dessert home because we were stuffed, but when we got around to it...that was awesome too. Breakfast was equally yummy and started with a fruit and yogurt parfait and blueberry bread. Overall this was the perfect little getaway for my husbdand and I. We can't wait to go back!! read more

This was my second time dining at The Grazing Room. The first time was with a few girlfriends, and we had a wonderful experience. Granted, we were the only ones in the restaurant. So, it would have been somewhat bewildering if we hadn't. However, I made a reservation for Mother's Day for myself, husband, and daughter. We arrived on time and almost immediately there was a significant amount of confusion as to who was actually our server. We had waited nearly 20 minutes to place our drink order, and the bread which was part of the Prix Fixe menu should have been delivered shortly after if not earlier, and it took 30-45 minutes. There were so many inefficiencies with the service staff that it was not only unclear to us, but to the table with spoke with next to us, as to who was supposed to be our server. The cocktails we ordered took 45 minutes + from time of seating to arrival at our table. My daughter's meal (Kid's Chicken Parm) took an hour, and it was overcooked to the point where the chicken was borderline jerky. My husband ordered the Beef Wellington and it was overcooked inside and nearly charred outside. I ordered the "tagliatelle pasta with wild mushrooms and fiddle heads" and I received spaghetti noodles, with what appeared to be baby bellas and nettles. The substitutions were not terrible, but I just would not have ordered it if that's what I knew I was going to get. The worst part I think, is that it was obvious many of the dishes had been sitting under the heat lamp for some time, as anything with a cream base had solidified around the edges as the moisture had evaporated from the heat. The Prixe Fixe menu was $70/person and we walked out of that restaurant spending $250 on one of the worst dinners we've ever had.. OVER two hours after we had initially been seated. We could over hear other tables frustrated after having a similar experience. Sadly, I don't think we'll be back to The Grazing Room, because it's not an inexpensive place to dine - which is fine if it's worth it!! But due to lack of consistency, it's a shame to take such an expensive chance on a place that may or may not provide an experience worth paying for. read more

This is a superb restaurant with a first-rate chef that is hiding in a quaint B&B in New Hampshire. I have noticed some of the other Yelpers have complained about the speed of the service. It is not speedy. Nor should it be. This is a place where fine cuisine is fashioned and should be savored with the time it deserves, not haste. If you take my advice, you'll book a room at the B&B (an adorable property of the best New England tradition), and purchase the meal option. The wine list is extensive, and while our first choice was not available, they were able to recommend another bottle that was comparable in price, similar to our desired taste, and of excellent quality. Then the food comes. It may be some items you are not familiar with, or put together in combinations you would never have imagined, but it is sublime. Portions are exactly right, neither stingy nor gluttonous, and the flavors and textures are extraordinary. I get the impression that local and fresh ingredients are a big part of how he works, but the mushroom appetizer (under "Nibbles") was divine. We were slightly underwhelmed by dessert, which was a bit tough and chewy, but I suspect the chef must serve as his own patisser (normally a separate discipline), and the food was so good, I'm not docking it a star. My wife had not been in years and had fond memories that she wanted to share with me. We made reservations at the Grazing Room because it's one of the few (if only) elegant restaurants in the area listed on Yelp. Getting there was interesting. It's located in the middle of nowhere. Thank God for GPS. It is an elegant restaurant, well decorated. The grounds were also well manicured and seemed a nice area to walk around before or after dinner. The restaurant wasn't crowded so we were seated immediately. We ordered drinks and a cheese plate for an appetizer; no complaints there. It was the dinner that was our issue. My wife had beef tenderloin. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles. In short, my wife's tenderloin was SUPER chewy. It was not the what would expect for filet minon in a fine restaurant. My fried chicken skin was soggy. I always thought fried chicken should have crispy skin. The waffles were soggy also but tasty. The dessert and wine were good. We were disappointed with our experience at the Grazing Room. Mostly because of the quality of our dinner. Everything else was fine, nothing special. Two stars is fair. We wouldn't go back there. read more

We've been here many times in the past and the food has always been fantastic. The service has never been great, but the atmosphere made up for it. Unfortunately, this last time we were there celebrating a 40th anniversary so we were hoping for a nice evening. 3 out of 5 meals were not even close to good. The broth dishes had no flavor and the lamb was over cooked and dry. One meal didn't even come out until most were already done eating. Not to mention it took over an hour of being there to even be able to put in a dinner order. Then, we sat around for about half an hour after eating just waiting for a server to return. I had to go get our own desert menu, which we never even ended up ordering because of the service. Which was really disappointing considering we were celebrating that anniversary. Some kind of acknowledgment of that would have been nice. I'm very disappointed and will not be back. read more

We stayed at the Inn last evening as we had a wedding to attend at Pat's Peak. We decided to stay for the brunch this morning, more out of convenience than knowing anything about the food. WOW. We enjoy good food and eat plenty of it. I was surprised and blown away by the dishes this morning. We started with beignets drizzled with maple syrup served with a blueberry and lavender accompaniment. They were crispy on the outside and pillowy soft inside. The pairing of the maple with the blueberry was amazing. We wanted to lick the plate, but refrained. My partner got the special, which was pulled pork hash with maple poached eggs. The dish was served in a mini cast iron skillet. The pork had a nice bark on it, and was loaded with vegetables, adding depth to each bite. I got the salmon eggs Benedict served on homemade goat cheese and chive biscuits and topped with dill hollandaise. They also had fresh pressed juices, which cut through the richness of the dishes nicely. Honestly the best breakfast I have had in a long time.
