I love the burgers and fries here but only 3 stars because service ain't giving. The most recent example was tonight when I arrived at 8:43 and found no one in line so I placed my order quickly because I knew exactly what I wanted. My receipt showed order time of 8:46. They gave me a buzzer and I went into the dining room to wait for my to go order. Most everyone in the dining room already had food (kitchen closes at 9pm) but by 9 pm my order still wasn't ready. I went to check and was told that the burger was ready but was just waiting on fries. There were no fries in the fryer and no one seemed bothered that an order of fries was placed 20 mins earlier and weren't even in the fryer. Everyone was busy cleaning the kitchen so they could go home while I'm starving. The manager finally dropped the fries while I stood there waiting for another five mins. Got home and found no seasoning on the fries and half of them weren't done. Excessively greasy, too. The leaf of lettuce sat under a warming lamp for so long that it was completely wilted so it went in the trash. This is just the latest as service and quality have declined so much over the past 4 years that the restaurant is just a shell of its former greatness and employees really don't care about customers. There are plenty of other places to grab a good burger and fries within a five - ten minute walk from here - all are better than Grease Monkey. read more

I didn't really know what to expect going here...except for a good burger! LOL! Friday around noon and it wasn't too busy but there were quite a few people enjoying lunch and drinks at the bar. It was a nice day so they had the garage door open for some outdoor seating too. Think of taking your car to an old shop for an oil change. When you walk in, order at the counter. Look up...the menu is on car hoods. After ordering, walk through the green doors and find tables and chairs, the bar, and the outdoor seating in what I would call the shop. Grab your drink and find a seat. There's a burger fixins bar if you want to add lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeños, mustard, mayo....you'll want to do that after you pick up your burgers back at the front counter. There's also a line of different sauces A1, sriracha sauce..... Enjoyed my Cheeseburger and fries. The atmosphere is fun and super casual. Check their calendar for their live music schedule. This is one of the very few places in Arlington open after midnight (if you don't want greasy tacos or pancakes). They have a drastically scaled back menu after 11pm. I was too late for the fried pickles and jalapeños I was craving, but the burger and fries were really good. My burger was perfectly extra well done (as requested) and the bread was buttery and toasted. The fries are good, but greasy (as advertised ) so you just need one order for two people. Grease Monkey is in my internal beautiful memory book with Levitt, the School of Social Work, Old School and J.R. Bentley's. Places that are uniquely my Arlington experience. I recall watching NCAA/NIT tournament games, cheering on UTA with new friends. I recall nights when my internship was killing me and I would dip in for a late night drink. I recall stopping in before concerts at the Levitt for good food and a drink. The food is consistently good. Granted, it is mostly of the fried fair, but good none the less. They always have a suitable beer selction, and the live music is always fun. Another added plus for anyone that frequents Bentley's as well - Caitlyn works here now. It was a pleasant surprise to see her, as she and her boyfried Keith were always top notch at Bentley's. Good catch, Grease Monkey. Stop in, enjoy the patio when it is not 200 degrees, hear a live band or watch a game. If you haven't been, this place is worth checking out. First visit to this place and very mixed feelings about it. It's a walk up service place which we don't mind. The line moved pretty fast and our food was done in less time that it took me to drink a beer, so like 10 minutes. I had the chicken fried bacon bbq burger. The meat was a little odd. Chewy maybe? The flavor was ok and the bacon was good, but for a straight up burger joint I really thought it would be better. The loaded fries actually saved the meal. Very good. On one hand, I want to give it a good review just for the effort. A lot of business has come into the downtown part of Arlington revitalizing an area that just been sitting there waiting for years. Now there's the outdoor music venue, some local chains (Fuzzy's, Babe's), and with more nightlife it could become a really desirable place to hang out for the few people who live in Arlington that are not into the suburban North Dallas-style strip malls and chain restaurants that have filled Arlington Highlands. All that said, within a reasonable walk from The Grease Monkey you still have two places that do it better, in my opinion. The same bars that have been there catering to UTA students and professors for years--Bentley's and Gilligan's. Bentley's remains a much cooler bar. Gilligan's has better food. And, best of all, both places know what they are--casual dive bars. This place? They have no idea what they want to be. On one hand it looks like they're going for the dive aspect of Fred's Texas Cafe (in Ft. Worth) or Twisted Root (in Dallas). They serve big greasy burgers. They serve beer. They have greasy, decadent side items. You order at the counter and take a seat until the call you. But the comparison stops there because they completely missed on the atmosphere. They have a stage and live music. But the area around it is some mix of swanky sports bar/lounge/fifties diner. And perhaps the worst decision is an open kitchen--which is know is very in right now...but not at places that are making french fries by the thousands. It kind of gives the entire place (and the area outside) the smell of the Texas State Fair. As for the food...the burgers are fine. They're not memorable. They're not bad in any way. But, again, walk up the road and Gilligan's does it better. If you're going for the whole Texas burger dive concept, they could stand to be bigger, greasier, and more slathered in toppings. I want a blue cheese burger to have crumbled cheese falling out of the bun...not a dab of bottled salad dressing on top. Avoid the sweet potato tots--they seem like a good idea, but they must be cooking them in the same grease as the other fries. Which doesn't work. They burn easier than an Idaho potato. That's basic chemistry, yo. Another gripe is that they also charge a cover when there is music. Which is fine, I guess, if you're just going there to hang out. But I've never seen anyone watching the band and if you're there to buy food and drink then you shouldn't have to pay admission. Right now it doesn't seem they've done much to draw in the local (UTA) crowd...most of the people are late 30s or older and look like they enjoy the nightlife. Came here before a dallas cowboys game. This place offers and round trip shuttle to att stadium. Make sure and buy your 5 dollar ticket at the bar! They have a pretty cool bar area which usually gets pretty packed before the games. I tried their fries with cheese and bacon and they were pretty good. The buffalo wings are okay, the sauce tasted a bit off. This is a great spot to come and have some food/drinks before a game at att stadium! read more

I'm still a little angry that Jim's is gone. Jim's was an Arlington staple, an unsightly pit, and one of the best all around burgers that I've ever had. To find out that it was bought and torn down to be replaced by a Capital One banking center was even more disheartening. However, if there's going to be a burger joint on top of the old Jim's location, it may as well be Grease Monkey. There's even a picture of the old Jim's hanging on the wall in the dining room. The owners are all Arlington people, so I suppose they knew exactly what had been standing there before them. Now, I've only ordered one thing at Grease Monkey and for the life of me, I can't order anything else. An Angry Burger with sweet potato tots is a helluva meal and it's great. The burger is a good size, cooked and seasoned well, and covered in a medley of pepper-themed toppings. Fried jalapenos, spicy mayo, pepperjack cheese, and then a few just plain peppers as well. The sweet potato tots are delicious. There's a big part of me that would just like to step in to grab a double order to-go. Atmosphere is mostly old car stuff, which is fitting with the theme and the location (next to the old Vandergriff dealership). The bar looks nice and there's a cool little patio. Live music is a staple on many nights. Sometimes there is a guy taking cash to get in on music nights, but I've never had the problem Ryan A had. I usually see him at the patio entrance and I just go in the main entrance without even having to speak to him. The outside of the building's windows are wrapped with old Arlington street views. My first review of The Grease Monkey was right after they opened and the experience wasn't a great one. I rarely give a place only one chance though, so today I came back to have a great burger. Maybe my expectations are too high, but they have failed again. They did fix the problem with the fries though. They were hot, fresh and tasty. That was the highlight of my experience. The burger? Gross. They seem to have changed the bun since my first visit, which would normally be welcomed given that first buns were more like a grocery store bun, but these new ones are dense, doughy and sweet. Maybe I'm the only person on earth that doesn't like sweet doughy buns on my burger, but that in itself was enough to make me put the burger down. I broke off a tiny bit of the patty to see if it had the seasoning it lacked on my first visit. It did. I was happy to see that it was well seasoned this time around. I discarded the bun and took a fork to the meat, cheese and mushrooms. It was a portabella swiss burger and it had "steak sauce", blue cheese mayo and fake swiss. The blue cheese was completely undetectable over the steak sauce. The first few bites were just edible. The next two were disgusting. The meat seemed to now have a strange flavor. At this point I gave up. $12.24 totally wasted. I put the burger in the trash, and left hungry. I doubt I'm up for a third visit. I do wish them luck though. read more

I went to this new burger joint slash social club downtown Arlington bar. I loved the place very cool bar set up. It is a large open garage door and a open bar on the other side. With good patio seating. There is plenty of seating on the inside as well. The complaint that everyone seem to have is they are confused on how to get your food. If you order a beer first sit in patio you can see what to do. They have a separate ordering area for the food. You go in there and order then they give you a number beep you when it is ready.. Not that difficult to figure out. I like my burger it was a half ponder I got the mushroom one. They have a unique choice of burgers which is fun not the same old boring thing. It did cost almost 8 dollars. And fries are extra. I had onion rings very good excellent even. I will get the onion rings always. On the web page they have live music on weekends. Solid burger place. I swear, it can't be that cost effective to have that giant garage door open all day, but it didn't affect my lunch as it was nice and cold inside even with the cool air spilling out. Its a solid burger with solid sides. I got the "black and blue" burger which seems to be pretty standard these days. Patty was properly seasoned, cooked all the way through but not dry on a freshly toasted Hawaiian roll. I didn't ask if they'd do it medium, just slipped my mind. Their default is cooked through it seems. The onion rings were great, but was a little weird on the ones with lots of batter, perhaps cook them at a lower temp for longer? dunno. Still great. Sweet potato fries are also a winner. -10% of one star for not having sweet pickles, which I love, but most people don't. Parking is easy and plentiful, staff is friendly and helpful. If you're on a budget, ask about the $5 lunch. I don't know what it is, but my large burger and sizable side was $12 - huge portion, but for lunch I could have made due with less. read more

Working a conference we were brought in for lunch. Easy ordering at the counter. Got the Chicken Fried Burger and some fries. To drink I had a Corona Light. The burger was a excellent. Juicy, cooked right with just the right amount of bread to meat to toppings ratio. The burger needed lots of paper towels as you eat it! The fries were hot and crispy. The beer was humongous! Wandered over to this restaurant/bar before a theater show because Babe's was too crowded. Now I'm sure I'll be coming here for my pre-theater dinner. They had an excellent choice of burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads and fries as well as a full bar. I thoroughly enjoyed by Grease Monkey burger and my wife really liked her patty melt. There cross-cut sweat potato fries were excellent. Prices for beer, wine and drinks were very reasonable. The price that's listed for the food isn't the correct prices. The listed price for a burger is 7.95 but they actually charge $9 and the salvage yard basket is listed at $9 but I was charged $12. When I brought it up to the cashier she mentioned that the owner upped the prices, which is totally fine but the owner should also be able to physically change the prices on the board. Took my daughter there on a Sunday afternoon (1:45'ish). First time ever visiting after seeing it across the parking lot from our many visits to Babe's chicken. The outside seating area was nice and breeze, not crowded and not full of flies. We went in and made our order. The wait time seemed a little longer than it should have been given the place wasn't overly crowded (took about 30 minutes.) The burgers were *outstanding* and the bread is unbelievable. The fried jalapenos were great also. Unfortunately, the "hand cut" fries were complete garbage. A thick pile of greasy, limp, overly salted fat cut into the shapes of fries. The fries were mushy, not crispy, and just soaked in grease - ate one and that was enough. Sharp contrast to the waffle cut sweet potato fries my daughter had which were crisp and crunchy. If you love the "MAGA" crowd than you will feel right at home at The Grease Monkey. Go on a busy night and the entire joint is packed with the biker crowd. If you don't fit into these parameters I can't imagine the other patrons making you feel very welcome. When we visited there was a table of 10-12 bikers wearing leather jackets and club colors next to us. One of them tried to intimidate me in the bathroom with a long stare. Having boxed for more than 8 years, I really wasn't all that concerned and ignored him. Beyond that, the food is pretty marginal with little or no taste. My burger arrived lukewarm and I didn't even finish it. My GF couldn't figure out if her burger really was what she had actually ordered. The fries on both our plates were cold and tasteless. They couldn't be saved with liberal doses of ketchup. On the plus side, the staff was friendly enough and the beer was cold. read more

The Monkey is a nice Restaurant/Bar with Great Potential.... I noted several things I believe would make it even better... One of the more glaring issues is the Management's insistence in keeping the large garage door in the Bar area open regardless of weather. Case in point, We visited the Bar again last Sunday to watch the Cowboy Game. The weather was cool and VERY WINDY. The minute we sat at the Bar our group were deluged with cold whipping wind. I looked at my Girlfriend and I knew we'd be a "One drink and Leave Group". What astounded me was the Bartender watched at least three groups sit at the Bar and immediately leave because of the uncomfortable situation.. Enough said on that subject.. If they continue with that thought process they will continue to lose business.. (we left after one drink) Secondly if they are going to portend to be a "Sports Bar" they need to serve Chicken Wings!!! Duh! Monkey also needs to educate Your Customers that you can order your food at the Bar and have it delivered to your table or the Bar. Presently most of your customers are of the opinion it's Cafeteria Style Dining ONLY. Everything else about the Monkey is great.. Great Burgers, Rings and cold drinks. Managers ... Ok. I really love this place!! I love music and they have it! I love a good burger and they have them! The fries are to die for!, They serve my rum and pour a great drink. So, I was there Sat. Had (another)first date and I like to introduce people to the places I love. They did not fail to deliver. ....But. We arrived early( 7:30), the band 57 Sauce whom I like were to play at 9. 9:00, no band-10:00 no band. Of course we kept asking when - but I guess they were just running late? Running late-for me is 10-15 mins; not over an hour. We had eaten-moved from inside to the patio and finally just gave up and left at 10:30. What a Find!. We love seeking out new and interesting Burger Joints, which led us to The Grease Monkey yesterday and it is firmly one of DFWs Top 10 Burgers. Those that complain about the atmosphere apparently either miss the play on words of a mechanic being known as a "Grease Monkey" or just need to relax a little bit. Is it the best atmosphere? No. But does it accomplish what it's trying to do? Yes. With a full bar and a small stage for live music, this place fits perfectly near a college campus. To the food - I chose the "Angry Burger". With Roasted Green Chilis, Fried Jalapenos, Chipotle Mayo and Pepper Jack Cheese, and loved every bit of it! The Seasoned Bun is lightly toasted yet soft and the Burger Patty is moist and well-seasoned. Not too hot, but a little burn for those who like spice. Also at my table, were the Chicken Fried Burger - which was eaten so fast, it must have been good. The Roasted Red Pepper Burger- also bragged about, and the Black & Blue Burger. Of all the Burgers, the B&B was the least favorite. I had a taste, and I agree that I've had many better. Maybe it was because it was only 1/3lb and grilled faster, but the Bleu Cheese was also not as good as I would like. For those that just like a Standard Burger, there's a Monkey Fixin's Station with plenty of Condiments and Veggies to top your Burger. We also really enjoyed the fries.
