I love this new restaurant. There's so much of the same types of restaurants around here and this is definitely a bit different thank goodness. We've been here twice and have thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The hummus is delicious with the pureed butternut squash adding a unique touch and taste. The butternut soup is also delicious. Last time I had the crab cake and it was substantial. I enjoyed this crab cake on top of a beautiful salad. The salads here have a lot different vegetables mixed in and isn't just lettuce like so many other restaurants do. And the crab cake is mostly crab meat, not a glorified fish stick like so many restaurants around here do. This time I enjoyed the scallop dish. They give you six scallops. Not the stingy three that so many restaurants around here do and then overcharge. I actually for the first time in my adult life brought half of this home because it was such a generous portion and so delicious. The last time we were here we started out at the bar which we really enjoyed. Bartenders were very nice and attentive. I love the plants that hang on the walls and are in the windows. One of the owners grows them himself and it just adds a really unique touch. I also appreciate that the owners are there hauling a$$ by helping bus and walking around ensuring customers are okay. Now the constructive feedback because unfortunately there's always going to be some... Servers are very nice and do their best, but I find both of the ones we had were not on top of their game. We had to wait quite a while for our appetizers and our wine whereas other tables seated after us were getting served sooner. We were seated in the upstairs bar area to keep me away from bratty kids and screaming babies. What I did not like was this was a high top and then it must have been a service area because there were a lot of dirty glasses on top of the out-of-service bar which was kind of gross. (I really wish restaurants would have adult only sections or just not allow kids under a certain age and after a certain time. But bratty children seem to have more rights than adults these day so whatever.) Also, if you are a wine lover, you might be disappointed. They have a limited bottle list and the bottles are a bit overpriced but that seems to be the case everywhere around here. Other than that, I really enjoy this restaurant and I am so excited that they are here. When school is on break we make sure to get there. I'm looking forward to summer break so that I can enjoy this restaurant a little bit more often. read more

We dropped in here with friends after dropping off our freshman off at college. The service was great - friendly and fast (given the restaurant was VERY crowded). The atmosphere upbeat. So we have been here a couple of times and it's always been pretty good but tonight was kind of odd. So I asked for a salad chopped with a hamburger on top. The waiter told me that the kitchen couldn't chop my salad. Its not Le Bec Fin. You can't chop my $14 salad? The manager doubled down on it. Staff is young which is to be expected in Newark. We were in town for a sports tournament and wanted our boys to have crab cakes since we're in the area. The staff were all friendly and personable and we got a table outside; it's a nice place with flower boxes, etc. We ordered main dishes and drinks, and waited for 25 minutes while we watched people who had arrived after us be served. After a half hour, a waiter came over and apologized for the wait and asked if he could get us anything. We had our drinks which were sitting there untouched while we waited for our food and asked for more water, and it took another 15 minutes for that to arrive. The manager came out and apologized for losing our ticket in the system and said that "We'll take care of you" which we took to mean, "I see you have three hungry kids so we'll send out some complimentary appetizers or the like". Nothing. After almost a full hour, our food arrived and it was fine, but definitely not at all worth the wait. The Korean wings were tasty, the pork bao was fine and chicken tacos were good, the crab cakes had lots of crab meat and were fine, but not super flavorful and were served without any sauce which usually complements the meal; I've had much better in Boston. They were served with a lackluster tomato salad that nobody ate. We had to wait another 20 minutes to get the check, and they had given us a 25% discount. It wasn't quite what we expected after that crazy long wait; any professionally managed establishment would have brought appetizers to a family with kids -- or comped the meal entirely. My older son son got so frustrated after two hours that he went to deliver our check back to the front desk because nobody was coming to the patio to take our credit card. Overall we had three different servers and not enough compensation for the terrible service. We don't go out often as a family and it was a disappointing experience. My husband read my review and made me realize that I was being generous; it took a full hour for two people's food to arrive, and over an hour for the other three people's food to arrive. Mind you, the restaurant wasn't crazy busy; we walked in off the street without a reservation and the patio was entirely cleared out by the time we left (other customers arrived after us, ate their meals, paid their checks and left by the time we walked around looking for someone to take our credit card -- my husband says we should have just left without paying, and he was right.) read more

The ice tea was watered down. Smoky wings under seasoned. French fries soggy. Cheesesteak was good, stake was ok, gardeners burger was also ok. Bottom line-appetizers are mediocre and not worth it. The entries are ok. read more

Absolutely incredible!! We were drawn into the Greenhouse out of curiosity and left knowing we would become regulars! Jimmy is one of the best chefs and I do not regularly give out top notch ratings, but there it is. His shrimp and grits are by far the best I have ever had and if you have the privilege of meeting him, do have him share his story on his research to perfect them. The staff at The Greenhouse are so friendly! Stephanie made a wicked Old Fashioned! The ambience was magnificent with beautiful plants mounted in unique art pieces! Checked out The Greenhouse Gastropub tonight in Newark, DE! I was thoroughly impressed. From the ownership down to the bathroom decor, all of it was top tier! It was a nice mellow vibe with dimmed lights and Erykah Badu playing over the speakers. The Greenhouse lived up to its name with the array of greenery on the bar, the walls, and basically around every corner. It was the perfect mix of zen and industrial where innovation meets simplicity and productivity meets peace. I met one of the managers, a University of Delaware hospitality alum, bringing back his passion and skills to the place where it all started. Now he is serving the community that served him throughout his scholarship pursuit. He said that he and the the other two managers/owners formed a bond in another occupational setting and carried that energy into their current venture with surprising chemistry. "Things just started to fall into place," he said, of the way their ideas began to take shape with regard to the establishment's vision. One might say it was kismet. I mean, the way the vegetable rissoto comes together, I would definitely agree that there is some magic there at 102 E. Main St. Hats off to the bartender as well because the drinks were exceptional! Looking forward to another date night. Maybe this will in our regular rotation. I hope so! read more

Based on some good reviews my husband and I came here for our anniversary. We loved the decor and the warmth of the place our server ( I think her name was Rachel) was attentive and helpful all around wonderful. We both had the French Onion soup that had delicious depth of flavor. My husband thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp cocktail. Unfortunately they were out of the short ribs so I got the steak, I was a little surprised at how thin it was, but it was well seasoned and cooked to the medium rare I requested. My husband had the flat bread pizza and thought it was excellent. We shared the Tiramisu. One of the best we have had in a long time. A great addition to Main Street. We will be back. read more

We're thrilled that GREEN HOUSE has opened in downtown Newark. Our bartender, Alex, was an excellent host with connections not only to UD and Newark but Hawaii. Sebastian, who is on the wait staff was warm and welcoming. GREEN HOUSE, named because it has all kinds of live plants all over the place, is a great hangout for all ages. We tried the Cheesestake Eggrolls with some delicious drinks at the bar. The eggrolls were amazing! And Alex guided us to the perfect drinks ... and the most amazing cherries. We look forward to stopping in more frequently. With all the room the restaurant has, we hope there will be a quiet place tucked away for quiet dinners. read more

Food was quite good. Steak frites, very flavorful, good cut of sirloin. Chargrilled chicken actually baked? Regardless, it was excellent. Not your average chicken. Sides were just as good, whipped sweet potatoes, glazed plantains, and particularly the green rice were a treat. Two top a little tight.
