I kind of don't want to review this place because the people seemed nice. The service was good she was attentive without being too pushy or forgetful. As for ambiance it felt like an old neighborhood restaurant with some colorful pillows on the bench seats. The food was horrible. We stated with poutine and soup of the day. The gravy had a nice flavor, however there was very little meat and the dusting of the goat cheese added little to the dish. Additionally, I didn't like the sweet potato fries the gravy was placed on. The fries weren't good and not particularly hot. The soup of the day was colorful and had lots of vegetables in it but no seasoning- my party described it was like eating at a nursing home. I purchased a chicken and waffle. The chicken wasn't seasoned so there was no savory flavor and the waffle was thick and forgettable. The syrup added sweet and sticky elements to the bland entree. One of my party ordered a salad with grilled chicken but she felt the chicken breast wasn't fully cooked. Bottom line we spent almost $100 and everyone left hungry. read more

Went here for brunch today! The place has a nice atmosphere and almost feels like a cafe. You walk in and there's a display of pastries/baked goods you can buy, but just right behind this display is the actual seating area. It can feel a bit crammed. There's a lot of big furniture in such a small space, but the ambiance is still nice and the staff are nice as well. Not sure if we just got unlucky but the brunch food was kinda hit or miss. We ordered the crab dip for appetizer and that was too rich and salty. Then we ordered our brunch and my partner got the ham, egg, and pretzel which was kind of underwhelming. The description of that dish promised "a giant pretzel", which was why my bf ordered it, but it actually is just a smushed up pretzel bun (if it even was a pretzel at all, we're actually not sure) with ham and egg inside and it tasted like a regular toasted bun. The potatoes that came with both of our dishes were just slightly underdone too. However, the drinks were great and they have really cool options for cocktails/mixed drinks! Service was pretty slow for brunch today that even after our plates were cleared, we sat waiting a while unsure if we should pay out front or expect a check. Eventually my boyfriend got up and paid at the front since we never got our check! It turns out you do get your check on the table. Our server was just extremely busy! read more

We had a nice weekend late lunch here. The inside decor was very cute, and it was not very crowded at 2:00. Our trip started with a visit to the bakery, where we purchased an eclair and a homemade Pop-Tart style dessert and an eclair. The raspberry Pop Tart was good, with a nice rich crust to offset the sweetness of the filling and the frosting, but the eclair was the star. It was stuffed with an excellent pastry creme, in a good shell, with a thick topping of not too sweet chocolate on top. Exactly what I wanted in an Eclair. For the lunch menu, there were some creative Benedicts, flatbreads and sandwiches. We had the crab dip as an appetizer, which was nice. The fried chicken eggs benedict was great, although it did lack the desired runny egg yolks. The turkey BLT was large and looked good. The brie flatbread was excellent, with a nice balance of sweet and salty toppings. Overall, a nice place with good food, worth visiting again. I suggested The Grey Goose Kitchen and Bakery (10 South Mallory, Phoebus, VA) to two friends for our luncheon today, but unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. We first stopped at the bakery, where most of the items we wanted were out of stock, and the selection overall was very limited. Moving to the dining area, one friend ordered iced tea with lemon but was told the restaurant doesn't have lemons--only lemon packets. The tea never arrived at the table, and she ended up canceling it mid-meal. Service was inattentive throughout. I had to ask for a fork, and even though I requested lemon packets, they were never brought. The food itself is overpriced for what you receive. Portions are very small--especially the chowder, which our server even acknowledged was not a typical serving size compared to other restaurants. On top of that, no substitutions are allowed, further limiting options. Overall, the combination of poor value, inattentive service, and limited choices makes this a restaurant I cannot recommend. If you're dining in Phoebus, I suggest looking elsewhere. read more

The menu has a lot but not overwhelming- lots of amazing selections. It's kind of easy to miss from the outside if they don't have outside seating open yet. Don't pass it up though! Some of my friends call me Grey Goose because of my hair... I know what y'all were thinking... but no, not after the vodka!! Haha. So when we were recommended by a traveler to visit this café/tea room, I was all in! We stopped by Downtown Hampton on our way home from Chincoteague. A couple was still outside on the patio finishing their meal, and the server informed is that they closed at 2:00 (we got there at 2:20). Awwww, man, missed it by that much! We thanked the server and said were bummed because we were told they have amazing pastries and teas. "Are you local?", she asked. "No, we're headed to Richmond" and told her we were just passing through. To our pleasant surprise, she goes, "Come on in, if you just want tea and something from the bakery, I'll hook you up!" And she did!! We got some teas to go and some ginger molasses cookies. Truth be told, we were hard pressed to choose from the delectable bakery offerings in the cases! The pastries, the cakes, the cupcakes... it all looked scrumptious. Another server informed us that Phillip, the pastry chef, is very well known in those parts and he has an award winning reputation and is State renowned. No wonder! They not only serve amazing desserts, but offer brunch, lunch and dinner menu options too! Inside, this cute, spacious eatery glows with warmth and positivity! Color me impressed by the cordial Grey Goose staff for their hospitality and and welcoming spirit! I doubt many other restaurants would have opened their doors to us like they did! I chose the green fried tomato eggs Benedict on the specials menu, and boy was that tasty! I wasn't a big fan of the ham bits that were served, but that's down to personal taste. The tomatoes were fried in a tasty buttermilk batter and lay on top of a delicious biscuit. I did ask for my hollandaise on the side, but it was poured on the eggs, at least they didn't over do the sauce so no biggie on that one. Our server was very friendly and the staff appeared to be enjoying themselves while working, making a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. There's a lot of room inside, I had no idea how big the dining area really is! There's a nice roomy outside section too in case you wanted brunch al fresco. If you're worried about parking, not to worry, there's a parking complex opposite if you can't park on the street and it's free! Overall, a pleasant experience, clean and comfortable, a chill-no-frills type of atmosphere anyone can enjoy. My girlfriends took me here for my bachelorette party and omg. We had tickets for the drag show they have there (not sure how often since this was all a surprise to me). The entertainment was nothing short of amazing, they were hilarious! They had great drinks for great prices, they didn't taste the best but they got the job done . Today was our first visit back here in some time. I remember the food and service being very good. On this visit the service was good but the food was horrible. Both of our eggs were extremely over cooked. I am not sure how you get a gummy texture on a biscuit. Was it yesterday's biscuits reheated in a microwave? I'm not sure but that is what they seemed like. The grits were served congealed and bland. The breakfast potatoes were off putting. Golden brown and delicious they were not. Almost black in color and mushy. The only thing on either of our plates that was any good at all was the wild boar andouille sausage. It was fantastic. read more

My family and I spent the weekend in Newport News with my uncle who is a bachelor. His fridge has nothing but meat and alcohol. So thankful for all of the restaurants who fed us over the weekend. My husband and I both had the crab soup. Really flavorful and not over seasoned. It was perfect for the wet day. Wish it had had just a bit more crab, but really no complaints. Also had the side salads with the Lemon Basil dressing. The salad is so big and had lots of ingredients, shouldn't really be called a side salad. The hubby had the Brussels sprout salad and again it was really filling. Food didn't last long enough for pictures. read more

This is a terrific locally owned restaurant. I always get cheerful good service and great food. I'm always treated to a warm welcome. The baked goods are the best. Their version of pop tarts is so good. Everything I have had there from the pulled pork sandwich to the creative flatbreads has been unique and delicious. read more
