Three people after me passed on outdoor seating because it looks gross. 20+ mins and I finally get a seat at the bar. I order coffee and my meal. I used to come to The Griddle years ago and always remembered it being pretty good, so I was excited to come back after about a two-year break. Unfortunately, this visit was really disappointing. We had a group of seven people, including a baby in a stroller. Since the inside is pretty small and crowded, we asked if we could sit outside so the stroller wouldn't be in everyone's way. There was nobody sitting outside when we arrived, but we were met with a lot of attitude just for asking. Once we were seated outside, we were put at the table furthest from the restaurant, right next to a strong urine smell. The table closer to the restaurant was completely empty, so we politely asked if we could sit there instead. Rather than simply explaining why we couldn't move, the manager came over with a lot of attitude and was surprisingly rude and aggressive in the way he spoke to us. It felt completely unnecessary, especially since we were just trying to avoid sitting next to the smell of urine while eating. He refused to let us move and gave some excuse that honestly didn't make much sense. What made it even more frustrating was that those tables stayed empty for at least another 30 minutes while we were there. The food was also a letdown. We ordered the Fiesta Scramble, and it was very basic. Nothing about it stood out, and I honestly could have made a better scramble at home. We also got the banana pancakes because our server said they were one of their most popular items. They were fine, but definitely not worth the hype. For a place that's so well known for its pancakes, I expected a lot more. The one thing I will give them credit for is the portion sizes, they are huge. This was my 2nd visit to this cute breakfast spot off Fairfax and Sunset. If you go on the weekend the line out the door is significant but we didn't show up until close to 1:30pm so were able to get seated pretty quickly. We ordered the Banana Pancake and Gone Shrimping dish to share and were so happy with our choices! Once in the service is pretty fast and they will get your order right. They are very nice and can guide you through the menu. They have vegan, gluten free, and vegan options. We have been there several times for breakfast and lunch. They have a full bar and it looks good, but we have never tried it. The place is very clean and cute. It is small, but it is comfortable and they have some outdoor seating and a counter. The food is so good. We love their pancakes and their French toast. There was plenty of metered street parking available, however, I was able to snag a coveted unmetered spot just around the corner in front of an office building. If street parking isn't available, there's a very spacious parking lot where the Rite Aid parking used to be but you have to pay a fixed rate of $5. Now to the food. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs when we ordered Mom's French Toast, a Barry Yellow, a Red Velvet Pancake and a Say Cheese Omelette. The Barry Yellow pancake was a massive three pancake stack! Honestly it was like having a cake. I really enjoy the raspberry and lemon flavor combo in general with pastries so this combination in pancake form was a natural fit for my taste buds. Regardless, there was a good amount left over because it was so massive. Mom's French Toast is their classic dish that put them on the map. It was good. However, it wasn't anything that I couldn't have whipped up myself at home with thick pieces of toast like they used. However I would have cooked it in bacon grease from wood smoked bacon grease! Still good though. The biggest let down was the Red Velvet pancake. Fortunately they only give you one pancake and not three like the Barry Yellow. As someone who has baked my share of red velvet cakes, finding a great recipe for the batter is important but what will make or break things is the frosting. This one fell short on the batter and the frosting. Without real cream cheese frosting then it's not going to cut it. Here's why I won't be back: When we were seated, the host dropped four laminated 3"x5"(ish) cards with a QR code on the table. The cards were pretty beat up, with the lamination peeling apart. I'm not a fan of looking at a menu on my phone, but figured I'd roll with it and give it a try. The menu is extensive, and the web page poorly designed. Once you're able to navigate to the part of the menu you're interested in, typically two items can be viewed at one time. Finding more menu items or comparing with dishes you already saw takes a frustrating amount of scrolling back and forth. When I had had enough, I asked the server if I could have a printed menu. There are none. The QR scroll is the *only* option. What happens if I don't have a smart phone, I asked? "I have to stand here and recite the menu," she replied. "And it's huge." I told her that it was very frustrating, and if not for the fact that I was with three other hungry people, I would've gotten up and left. I won't be back. Like I said, the food was good and plentiful. I don't know if I got what I would've liked best, because I finally got tired of scrolling and just settled for what was on the screen at the time. Not everyone has a smart phone, and those that do don't like scrolling a large menu on a six-inch screen. Do your business a favor; stop pissing off your customers. You may not want to spend the money to print menus, but you should have at least a few on hand. I (and I assume many others) would've had a much more positive experience.
