Pulled up for happy hour after work yesterday. Found this spot on Yelp. Found a parking spot around the corner in the residential neighborhood. The restaurant is beautiful and reminds me of being in Mexico. A Spanish theme and style. A lot of seating and it's also spacious with an outdoor patio that is open to the customers and also widely used for many event. Everything was clean from what I noticed. The music volume was tolerable as well as the selection of choice. Felt like I was on vacation for a min. A great spot to have drinks. A great to spot to meet up or even come for a date. The Melrose Mule was cool. Very refreshing like the bartender mentioned. It was different than the usual mules I get. And the Improved Whiskey was like having an Old Fashion and Whiskey Sour together. It did not disappoint. I also had an attentive bartender who had a good attitude. Didn't take long for him to make my drinks nor put in an order for a smash burger. The smash burger was acceptable. It was good, however, I was expecting something a little bit bigger in size. I like the presentation with it being wrapped in foil. It was cooked perfectly, it was hot and flavorful. No complaints other than the size. I used to love it here, but in recent months, not so much. I went during the Halloween season and again last night, and both times the food menus were extremely lacking. One of my friends last night is vegetarian and there were no mains he could eat, and only a few of the starters. All of the dishes we got (the pasta, the steak frites, and the beets and burrata) were extremely small, especially for the price. During Halloween, there were only a few food items available at all, none of which were incredibly appetizing. Came on a Saturday night for a drink (so granted it was busy) and immediately loved the vibe. The atmosphere is chill and it's nice and dimly lit with somewhat of a unique aesthetic compared to most places in LA which I appreciated. We were seated by the fireplace which was so cozy but what we had an issue with was the service. We were greeted pretty quickly once we sat down, ordered 2 drinks and a cup of fries and it took over 45 minutes for our drinks to arrive. I got the "Three sheets to the wind" and my boyfriend the "Irish goodbye". Both the drinks were pretty good. I'd come back just for the "Irish goodbye" which they don't tell you is a frozen cocktail but was still amazing. They gave us complimentary champagne which we didn't ask for and they comped the fries which we appreciated for the insane inconvenience of waiting 45 minutes for 2 simple cocktails. What a disappointment. First time there and expected way too much. Had dinner reservations and were sat in the bar area. When requested a possible table change, the hostess showed her annoyance on her face and by her quick and curt reply, "we're completely booked." I get it. It's a "hot spot". But not even an apology or feigned effort to accommodate us. We looked around and there were plenty of other vacant tables. When our server came, I asked IF there was a cancelled or missed reservation at another table if we could take it. He too looked bothered by the request. We watched him go ask the same hostess and she scrunched her face and said, "I already told them..." yes, she already told us, my inquiry was IF by chance someone were to cancel, could we change tables. Anyways, after looking at the menu, it was mostly bar food--nothing I'd consider dinner. We left. Found a GREAT place one block north. They were packed, but very hospitable and accommodating. They allowed us to sit in a lounge-like area and provided table service. Umbrella should take note. Even if the answer is, "no," try not to be so nasty. We won't be back. We had a blast! It was a bit of after party of my husband's birthday and we got here to get a few drinks and snacks. First of all, how cool is the interior!! It had a gothic vibe and everything looked sophisticated yet very welcoming thanks to the bartenders making the best drinks ever and making you feel good about coming to the bar. I also loved the fact they had such good mocktail selection and it was very much elevated cocktail experience (not those sugary drinks with basic soda ingredients but actually very good rich in flavors items - I had nonalcoholic Negroni and it was phenomenal) Additionally, I think for the bar food it was pretty good! I LOVE this place. It's spooky, intimate, and opens up to a really cool grotto/courtyard. I've been during Halloween time and the way they decorate it makes my heart sing! I recently took my boyfriend and we got some drinks which were good (though nothing too insanely different than other places) but the food! Came here late on a Sunday night as nothing else nearby was open. The vibe was lively and the decor with umbrellas on the wall and vintage items was really cute. There is a nice back patio but it was closed for the winter. I had an espresso martini and chicken tacos which were both well done. However the service was pretty awful, it felt like a self-serve fast food restaurant. We were a group of 5. No one greeted us. We were told to just sit wherever and order at the bar. We found 2 small tables and pushed them together. We waited for someone to clear the dirty glasses and napkins from previous guests, but no one did. Eventually we cleared the table ourselves... We ordered our drinks at the bar. They would not allow us to pay separately and we had to start a tab, fine. We ordered our food from the bartender as well. We wanted water. No one came to serve us. Eventually, I found large pitchers of water and clean glasses by the kitchen so I grabbed them myself and brought them to the table. it was busy so we didn't want to rush them, we just kept an eye on the bar to wait for our drinks to come out (the bartender told us he wouldn't bring the drinks to us, we have to come to the bar to get them). We waited more than 15 mins and none of our drinks were ready which was weird. Later, going to the washroom, my friend noticed all our drinks were sitting by the side of the bar. No one told us that is where we have to go collect them. Because the drinks had been sitting there for 15+ minutes, the ice had started to melt and some drinks became watered down :( After a long time the tacos came out (for once the tacos were actually brought to our table...) but without napkins. We had to flag someone down for napkins. Honestly, the whole thing was quite commical by that point... Also there are just 2 single stall washrooms and one of them had no hand soap, EW... So I had to go in the men's one (has a urinal and smelled SO BAD in there). This place is really nice inside and the food/drinks were actually good, but the lack of service and cleanliness really took away from the experience :( Hopefully they were just having an off night... read more

I watched umbrella academy and when I showed up to this place I knew they were going for the look- according to the bar tender the Netflix show had the "after party" here. I usually get the shrimp burrito bowl but I tried the grain bowl with steak and wow absolutely delicious. So flavorful. A cool venue with nods to the Prohibition Era, from the bar being unmarked from the outside, to the 13 Umbrellas on the wall for each year of the Prohibition.
