The Grub Hut was on my "to try" list and after coming up this way to Kingston to check out a few places on a recent trip Steve and I were excited to get. Steve got a chicken sandwich that was good. I got a hamburger with kimchi. It was excellent but I forgot the name of the burger. I saw a pork sandwich option on the menu that had kimchi but that wasn't the same thing... so just read the menu carefully if what I had sounds good. There are lots of options to pick from so take your time. We also split an order of French Fries which were great! For our sweet tooth we got an Amaretto Milkshake and it was excellent! We really enjoyed this one! It was non-alcoholic and we got this particular one because this was a flavor one doesn't usually associate with milkshake options. We are so glad that we got to try it! The Grub Hut is very, very popular or at least it was when we were there and there was a small line to place our order, very little room to sit and the wait time to get our food was about 25 minutes. We didn't think that was too bad and we thought it was "johnny on the spot" timing at work to tell us that at the time that the order was placed. And I suppose they have it down to an art and need to give out times like this as this restaurant is right by the ferry terminal and Kingston so I imagine a lot of people who are using the ferry need that kind of information to plan accordingly with their meals and arrival/departure times with the ferry. read more

This place is aptly named. It doesn't lead you to believe you might experience more ambiance than you do. This place is suited to people who value good diner food more than atmosphere. Because the place is so small, it can feel cramped. It might help if the person behind the register gave a little more friendly greeting and maybe some help knowing where to stand or sit. It doesn't appear much effort has been put into creating ambiance. Signs are old, stained, or faded paper slapped up with icky edges of tape. Freshly printed would help. Double stick tape would help. Laminating would help. There are odd things tossed up here and there to try to provide barriers between the front and back but not quite achieving it. It almost felt like either more money needed invested into proper barrier or just take it down and create a family feel to the place. If you sit at the bar, you'll be looking at a stack of burger bun bags while you eat. They have a limited amount of space in their kitchen and they use it all! It also seemed like cleaning could have been better. The bar and condiments were a little tacky. I understand why this is happening. When there is that much frying going on in such a confined space without actual walls between the kitchen and dining room, the oil particles land everywhere. It would take more effort to maintain than a normal restaurant cleaning schedule. That said my review would probably be 3 stars except my onion rings were AMAZING!! They go down as some of the best onion rings I've ever had! The flavor in the Ruben burger was good but the bun ended up so soggy I had to peel off the bread and eat the rest with a fork. Probably partly my fault because I ate the onion rings first. I wouldn't order the Ruben burger again but I would try another. Portions were great for the $20 lunch I had. We found 4-5 short hairs clumped together in a salad here a year or so ago and stopped patronizing as a result. It looked like beard hairs but who knows. This is a locally owned burger spot, but what is really special is all of the gourmet toppings and choices. There are veggie choices, salads, and gyros too! And of course shakes, onion rings, and fries. The day I was there, the place was packed with local families, sports teams, etc, and you can tell right away this is a local favorite spot. I've need a customer since they opened 17 years ago, I don't live in the area anymore but try to come back at least once per season. Food has never disappointed me, they have so many options but I usually stick to the hangover helper or bacon cheese burger, the gojo and tissyfit are great too. Place has a beech tiki vibe which is a unique cool vibe and they saved the wood carvings that have been around for over 40 years. Staff is always friendly and nice, hope they are all doing well. Can't go wrong with g with a big burger here. A small local burger place with lots of yummy food. Salads, burgers, shakes and fries. Been in Kingston for many years and still a good spot to stop. Not a lot of seating inside but they do have a small outdoor eating g area as well. You order at the counter and they deliver your food. Service is good. When we arrived a bit before noon, there was no wait and we were able to place our order at the counter right away. By the time we sat down, there was quite a line! The few tables filled up quickly. Clearly, this is a popular location! There are lots of menu options, so be ready! Order at the counter, then find your seat. There are five solid children's menu options, guaranteed to help any child find something they'd like to eat. Burgers come with a mountain of fries- definitely more than one person can finish, so come hungry. Everything we ordered tasted good! My only slight complaints are that there is only one restroom, which can result in a wait. It was also very cold in there, but it was fairly clean. How I heard of this place: Hungry, driving to the ferry, long lines, and a hankering for greasy, fried food. Yelp saved the day! Type of cuisine: Burgers, fries, shakes and all things American. Ambiance: A small shack-style exterior leads you into a funky, colorfully vibrant interior. The bar sits underneath a straw hut rooftop, windows look out onto the parking lot, where a Grub Hut food truck sits outside. Hanging flower baskets adorn the mini porch outside, and the dimness of the inside create a true diner-like experience. What I ordered: The Don't Be A Jerk Chicken Burger, Bacon Cheeseburger Poutine, and I Wish I Was A Gyro Burger. Not to mention the thick-enough-to-hold-upside-down shakes! What I loved: All of it. My only complaint is that they don't offer chips with the sandwiches; just fries or coleslaw or potato salad. Guurrrrrlllll, This place is fire. Don't regularly come this way, but needed to take the ferry and we were starving. We just needed to grab whatever and move on and I can't tell you how happy I am that we found this place. Its a hole-in-the-wall gem. We loved it so much we had to hit it again on our way back, and now we're having to invent reasons to use the ferry just to come here. The vibe is eclectic, cute, and casual. The service is so great!! Every person we met was VERY friendly. Molly helped us on our second visit, like I said she was great. She gave us good reqs and was just generally sweet. The thing that brought me here to write this review though were those M********** ONION RINGS!!! Crack. They're crack. Soooo good. Truly the best I've ever had in my life. The batter is slightly sweet but not oppressively so and the onions are super tender they actually break where you bite them without pulling out of the casing or having it all flake off like in many other places. I suggest getting the chipotle sauce or garlic aioli to dip them in. Idk what happened to some of these other reviewers, but if they didn't like them, they should give it another try. The bacon cheeseburger was pretty standard. I'll be honest the Philly cheesesteak wasn't my cup of tea, very mushroom forward. BUT the hangover helper burger is baller.
