We had dinner with family after coming across on the ferry on a Sunday at noon. The Ale House was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. We called for a reservation and sat right down. Although it was pretty full, the service was first rate, and food was very good. I enjoyed the Halibut sadwich and Smoked Salmon Chowder--delicious! Our whole family enjoyed the lunch. Fish and chips were decent, although the chips were a bit soggy and not crispy like I was expecting. The other dishes were just ok too. I did like the sesame ginger slaw that came with the fish and chips, that was a unique touch. Portion sizes were unfortunately small for what you're paying ($22 for 2pc, $28 for 3pc at time of writing). Be warned that they also charge a 3% credit card fee which can add up to quite a bit if you rack up a large bill. The young lady with the blue/purple hair is very friendly and made our experience better. Decent option if you're in a rush to grab dinner before catching the ferry but we'd likely try somewhere else next time we're in Kingston. read more

Came here solo on a Sunday evening and couldn't recommend more! The vibe is chill, the service is great, the food is perfect. The bacon cheeseburger on a gluten free bun was super yummy and the fries are done WELL, could kill any craving! The bun didn't crumble at all - gluten free friends know the height of this compliment. I also got a Ghostfish grapefruit IPA - would recommend anywhere (a delicious WA gluten free brewery). The first piece of halibut was a touch dry, but acceptable. The second was not. It was overcooked with a matte texture; not the glossy appearance of a fresh, well cooked piece of fish. So so food wise. But one of the few places in this town that's open later which I greatly appreciate. Great ambience - exactly what you would expect from an ale house. They also have karaoke and trivia nights which is super cool. Service was good, very friendly. Their award winning chowder was a bit overrated. (Stick with Ivar's smoked salmon chowder!). Also the Caesar dressing tasted like straight up mayo. By far the worst dressing I've ever had which is surprising because Caesar dressings tend to be pretty easy to make and I am not that particular about them. What a cool local bar with great food. My friend and I were walking the tiny downtown of Kingston, looking for a place to take a break and have a bite to eat. The Alehouse caught our eye and we stepped in, being greeted by Mike, the manager, who took fine care of us as we had cocktails and dinner. A excellent manhattan, salmon chowder (a house specialty) and crab stuffed mushrooms... everything was perfect. Rounding it all off is the atmosphere. A wooden bar stocked with bottles of liquors from here and gone, mirrors behind, chandelier lights not too dark, not too bright, very comfortable local pub feel. I hear there's karaoke on the weekends... might have to come back for that. A neat spot to stop and chill for a while, enjoy the mood and some really good food. read more

We were told this was a great place for smoke Ahi but I chose dress local steamed clams and a Bitchen' beer that is also local. It was a good pairing! I like the feel of the place and although John took his time deciding the distinguished derby wearing server was patient and kind. Our first time visiting this little gem in Kingston. We arrived with a party of 5 and were added to the list. The hostess took our number and said she would call when our table was ready. We took the opportunity to visit some other shops in Kingston while we waited Unfortunately, they forgot to call us. This is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars. After a bit we walked back to see what was up and were promptly seated with apologies for the oversight. Our food was quite tasty. We had fish and chips, crab cakes, a lovely salad and one of the daily specials with scallops. The scallops were excellent and everything else was quite tasty. When left to get dessert down the road and then went back after our friends caught the ferry back to Edmond's. The highlight of the evening was being welcomed back into the Ale House to finish watching the Mariners win the American League West division title. Everyone in the restaurant were rooting for the home team. It was a positive and exciting vibe all around. They were happy to just get us some water and let us watch history in the making. One experience was more than enough. My husband and I ordered meals right at the $18-20 price tag with two cherry cokes no ice, but we still had ice in our drinks. My husband asked for shredded cheese for his salad. It wasn't until we got the receipt and saw the total was over $60. We were legitimately confused. When we asked for the itemized bill to check how that total came to be, we saw that a ramekin of cheese- $3.00. That's just flat out asinine. ONLY THEN was it explained that the grenadine is what made EACH soda $4.00 ($16.00 for two sodas). Equally asinine. The food was almost as good as Panera, which is just a national chain of hospital food. It certainly was not worth the nickel and dime'ing price tag. read more

Love the Kingston Ale House! They have a lovely shaded deck for the summer, and a nice interior dining area for the rest of the year. The menu is extensive enough to please a variety of friends and guests, and we don't get tired of it with repeat visits. The food is consistently tasty and prepared as ordered. They have a great beer menu and a sold wine selection. The staff can get busy (which speaks to the KAH's success), but they always remain pleasant and helpful. It is walking distance from the ferry, the waterfront, and nestled in the midst of downtown Kingston. For all those reasons and more, KAH is a favorite of ours!! read more

We've been here several times. The food is OK. It's not great, it's not terrible. It's just OK. The kitchen is loud with lots of banging, calling orders and the chef calling for help. What really catches my attention is the lack of cleanliness. From our table, I could see the kitchen. The overhead vents were greasy and fuzzy. It looks like they haven't been cleaned in a long time. The dining room smelled of fried food. While waiting in line for the restroom, I could see part of the kitchen from the open doorway. Onions were being stored on the floor. EWW. The food here when we eat in is always delicious and well made and has solid portions sizes but I give it 3/5 stars because the last few times we've ordered take out it feels like we were scammed with the portion size and I'm honestly tired of restaurants doing that because they know it's much harder for someone to come back and complain. I ordered a mushroom burger which was delicious but also a $14 beet salad that looked like it barely cost them $2 to make! I didn't even get a full beet on the salad. Last time I had this same salad in my take out order it was also smaller compared to the times I've had it in house but this particular order was straight up unacceptable. Walked right in just a few minutes ago, the hostess greeted me and showed me to the bar. She provided me with a napkin and utensils. The establishment wasn't that busy and had 3 people behind the bar at one point. Two of them might not have been bartenders. It took a few minutes before the bartender came up to ask me what I would like. I ordered an IPA. The bartender went back to his conversation with the other two people behind the bar. He then went over to other customers who were seated at tables to ask them what they would like to drink. He did the same at another table. He went behind the bar to pour their drinks. I tried waving to one of the others behind the bar, but he turned and walked away. Ten minutes went by and still no beer as ordered. I've never been into this establishment before and was in line for the next ferry. I wanted to make things quick and easy as I had about 35 minutes before departure time. I just wanted some fish & chips and a beer. After a couple more minutes passed, I got up, informed the hostess that I was leaving because I still had not received my beer, and left. I do not recommend The Kingston Ale House. Friendly greeting, but poor customer service from the bartender. If you are the owner of this establishment, you should be embarrassed by this bartender's lack of friendly customer service. All he had to do was pour me a beer and bring it to me. We stopped in here this summer on a backpacking trip while waiting for the ferry and found it to be the perfect spot to wait and nom. We were able to get seated on their nice outdoor patio and enjoyed the summer weather and the view of the water. Our server was really helpful and addressed my questions on the menu. Their menu has gluten free designations making it pretty easy to find delicious noms sans gluten. We started with the nachos which were ok but probably wouldn't get them again. I had the stuffed mushrooms which were quite delicious and the husband was in love when he saw they had French dip sandwiches. He enjoyed his lunch immensely. We finished up with a flourless gluten free chocolate cake cause hey we were going backpacking and calories don't count on those weekends. All in all it was a nice little place. We had some things we loved and a couple we wouldn't get again, but there are so many delicious sounding items to choose from on the menu we look forward to returning and trying new things! read more

Their service is fast, so it's also a great option if you have a longer wait for the Kingston ferry. Their food is great and they have a lovely selection of cocktails. This review is hard to write... I'm torn in two between the horrible service and the good food. I could easily go 2 stars or four, depending on how much weight I give each factor. I'm settling for 3, and hopefully, you'll understand why in a minute. My wife and I came here for our weekly date night after dropping our niece off at the ferry. We were in a great mood after a fun week visiting with her, and we heard so much about the food here. The hostess asked if we wanted to wait for a clean table in the front bar area or take a table in the "dining room." We opted for the latter. As it turns out, the dining room is a collection of small tables uncomfortably crammed into the space between the kitchen and the patio, where you dine practically in one another's laps. Note: We weren't offered the patio even though there were seats available. Being jostled frequently by the servers trying to get between the ordering station, the drink station, and the kitchen window (from which loud calls for order pickup drown out any hope of conversation) created a chaotic experience not conducive to fine dining. Or any dining enjoyment for that matter. The menu has a lot of creative dishes, including small plates for sharing. Some are outrageously over-priced ($18 for a cup-size serving of tempura green beans that I can get at Habit Burger for $5... c'mon). Others are quite reasonable. We settled on the smoked wings as an app. I had the hearts of romaine salad and a cup of soup (chicken tortilla, the soup du jour). My wife had the crab melt sandwich. The wings were amazing... deep smoky flavor and crispness without tasting like you're licking an ashtray - as some overly smoked meats can be - with a great sauce to boot. The soup was tasty and fresh... crisp veggies made the item most enjoyable (so often soup is soggy mushy veggies in broth). One drawback... there was not a tortilla to be found in my serving, which was disappointing. And my salad was very good, if perhaps a bit overdressed. I had the entree portion with prawns. Very generous with the salad, not so much the prawns (they were medium size, not jumbo as I'd expect for an $11 add on). My wife's take on the crab melt was it was tasty, though a bit soggy. Here's my dilemma: The wings came out first... too hot to eat, so I waited 3-4 minutes for them to cool. I'd had one bite of one wing when the server brought the soup, sliding it in front of me and scooting my wing plate aside. Seriously, a table big enough for four, and you're shoving my food aside? We hadn't even finished wing #3 of 7, nor touched my soup, when our entrees arrived. I couldn't finish the soup or the wings in lieu of my salad getting soggy (keep in mind, every 3rd bite of salad a server would bump my chair or arm and spill my fork full all over me, the table, and the plate). And with a full plate of wings dropping with honey bbq Sriracha sauce, I was given precisely zero napkins. I had to ask... to their credit, they did bring a few more. As we dined, the staff asked to box up portions on each plate... *while* I was eating. After finishing our entrees, we were offered dessert... from the list, we chose the mixed berry cobbler. It arrived quickly and looked delicious. Unfortunately, it was accompanied by two tiny spoons. And when I say tiny, I mean a single blueberry would barely fit on one. It was a gelato spoon, at best. Remember the constant jostling... that plus tiny spoon equals getting only every other bite to my mouth without losing 1/3 of the payload. The cobbler was huge, making the spoon size even more disproportionate. You may think I'm making too much of the spoon size. Well, when you're charged $16 for a dessert, it would be nice if $8 worth wasn't laying on the table, the floor, and my shirt. To top it off, I was 3 bites into my dessert when the server sets the bill down... not aside, but in front of me... between me and my cobbler. In fine dining, it is considered insulting to bill a customer while they're eating. Doubly so when shoving it in my lap. What if I'd wanted a coffee afterward? I may not have been done... but they declared the meal over. It's clear to me the staff and kitchen have no idea how to time a meal. If it were a quick service diner, with quick service prices and quality, I could forgive it. But at $50/person plus tip, I expect a lot better. So, you see... 1 star for service and ambiance. 4-5 for the delicious food. I'm torn. Do I brag about the food? Do a warn you off about the terrible service? I don't know. 3 stars seems both a decent compromise and overly generous. I will return to give it another shot, but not impressed with my first visit. read more
