Tonight, 9/1, was my first time going with a group of friends as I usually frequent Alcove or Madre. As soon as we walked in, the bartender, Dayne, completely ignored us and we had to ask how the ordering worked. It wasn't until we went outside and one of the waitresses explained the difference between the two business that she helped us get situated back at the bar to order food. The bartender never even looked up at us while we ordered. On top of that, we then asked him a seemingly normal question about the fries in which he plainly replied, "I've never had them". By the time we ordered and got seated it was around 8pm. But by 9pm he started cleaning around us and stacking chairs even though the hours say closing is at 10pm. Dayne makes an announcement for last call at 9:24pm then abruptly kicks us out a little before 9:40pm saying on slow nights they reserve the right to close early. Mind you, we would have NEVER come if we knew this and would have gladly gone to one of other actual friendly, warm, and hospitable businesses on this block. It was a horrible experience that left us visibly uncomfortable and disappointed. I will never come back and would never recommend this place to anyone. 0/10 read more

You order at the bar (no table service), but the place has a great vibe: cozy alcoves, little patios, and plenty of comfy spots to sit and hang out. I went with the oven-braised short ribs with garlic mashed potatoes and baby carrots -- total comfort food and a huge portion. I actually had enough left over for lunch the next day. My friend had the short rib pot pie, which came with a big salad, and got two thumbs up. Our third had the miso sea bass, marinated overnight in a miso glaze and served with mashed potatoes and asparagus. I didn't get a bite -- she ate too fast -- but she said it was amazing. I turned around for ten years and H Coffee House rebranded as The Guest House, a casual all-day bar in the converted Craftsman bungalow next to Home on Hillhurst. It's owned and operated by the same people, but I've liked it better than Home in both iterations. I dropped by the other day to catch up with my friend Kim S. when I had time to kill in Los Feliz. It was a great place to sit for an hour, almost completely empty in the middle of a Monday afternoon. The decor was charming, kind of grandma's house meets old-school Hollywood bar. We had our pick of tables and got a cozy corner spot with a view of the street. Service was friendly and fast. The bar was fully available, but I thought it'd be aggressive to have a cocktail while my friend had iced tea and huevos rancheros (there was a bar food menu, but I'd already eaten). I opted instead for a Tropical Freeze, a refreshing mid-day indulgence that looked too good to pass up in the churning slushie machine on the bar. It was great, a sort of piña colada smoothie with banana, pineapple, coconut, fresh lemon juice, and fresh lime juice. The bartender said I should try it with rum next time. I'd like to revisit The Guest House for a legitimate cocktail or two, but for now, I'm just glad it was there when I wanted a place to sit and hang out on a weekday afternoon. Dogs barking relentlessly the last hour/hour and a half we were there. The Guest House is the bar portion of Home Restaurant. I've been several times and always enjoy the delicious craft cocktails. As for the food, I've been a fan of most everything I've tried. I've had the cheeseburger & fries, the taco salad, chicken nachos, fried zucchini appetizer and the fish tacos. All highly recommended. Their cookies are served warm and are amazingly soft with a crispy edge. But the pièce de résistance is the French toast a la mode for dessert... a definite must have!
