My first time trying this speakeasy experience and it was amazing. The place was set up like a vintage bar with beautiful replicas of ornaments. The pairing of drinks were good and delicious. We had (12) tastings of paring and each one was so delectable, scrumptious, and made with quality ingredients. My favorite was the chicken and waffles and the lobster. What a trip! This is such a creative place and it introduced me to so many new styles of liquor I didn't know existed. It felt very much like a trip around the world without leaving your barstool. Favorites were the beet with caviar and a shot of Russian vodka, and the slow-roasted lambshank paired with a tiny fruity cocktail that brought out the grass in the lamb. Every sip and bite felt so thoughtfully curated, and came with a great story about how the whole presentation came to be. A few times a year we like to try something different and we found it this time. The first hurdle for the Hollywood location is finding it, you could walk by the entrance a few times and never know it (we did it twice). But once you find.... Imagine being in New Orleans over 50 years ago in a Speakeasy. Super cool vibes with appropriate music that is older than probably most everyone reading this review. We were taken on a guided tour by the amazing Vicky. Walking us through some history, the chef, the idea of the place and of course the great food and drink. You can expect 12 courses over roughly 2 hours while sitting with (at maximum) 9 people at the bar. I am not a fan of wine pairing as most people's tastes are so different that it's never worth the price. Here is a totally different story, the thinking that goes into the combination is really on point and we loved almost everything we had. The food and drink is super fresh and very creative (you are not going to find your typical Tito's here). After a $40 deposit, it's $100/person cash which I think is totally reasonable for this experience because it's not just sitting at a bar and eating/drinking. This place is unique and fun for a night out. If you're looking for something where you try many different curated drinks and food pairings omakase-style, I would definitely recommend this place to you... maybe in the fall or spring! The owner is pretty humble and kind and allowed us to bring some belongings up the stairs and into their small lobby. Looking around, he definitely doesn't use any bottom shelf alcohol. Plus... Parking is right below, no fee or anything. For the drinks, I enjoyed a lot of them! Some of my favorites were the Indian-spiced-rum and the sesame oil Benedictine! A couple didn't show up, so we ended up getting to share their pairings with those that did. I also had some of my partner's drinks since we need to make sure we could leave fine, and by 2/3 of the dinner, I was both pretty buzzed AND full. Pictures attached will explain what each of these were as well as I could remember. A nice surprise was lobster in a snail shell! The oyster was also one of the best foods there as well. The rice cracker that the tuna mix was on was also custom from the chefs, so that was my ultimate favorite pair together (followed closely by the charcuterie style pair). The only downsides were that some of the drinks or food weren't my favorite, like the salmon&goat cheese on a cracker and the Korean inspired pair. It seemed lacking compared to the others. Entrance: Look for a black door with a red light key above the door just to the left of the bar Sassafras on Vine Street. There's decent metered parking ($1/hr). Note that you have to trek up a long flight of stairs so be mindful if you select this location and have mobility issues. Service: Our host's name escapes me but she was quite friendly, lighthearted and enjoyed making conversation and jokes. And she was able to accommodate a last minute food restriction which was appreciated. We weren't asked at the time of making the reservation and it escaped me but be certain to include that in your text communication with the location. Food/Drink: Our location actually had approximately 14 drink/food tastings as opposed to 12 which was a nice surprise! Some highlights - I thoroughly enjoyed the lobster in the snail shell, basil foam, smoked trout, tuna, pork bun, lamb and chicken and waffle. Overall, the food and drinks were delicious. Some items better than others of course, but the combinations were inspiring. I went with a couple of friends back in October for a birthday celebration and we had fun. It was omikase style with the bartender making your drinks and assembling the food pairings in front of you. While I enjoyed our time there, I'm not sure this is something I'd do again. For me, I think the mixing of all the alcohol, didn't sit well but I appreciated the one time experience. I'd rate the food and cocktail experience a 4 but the rest a 3 so a 3.5 rounded down because there were some glaring disappointments for an expected fine dining experience. I think the concept is excellent and I absolutely appreciate the attempt at execution. Wine pairings can elevate food. It's a greater challenge with cocktails. While the ideas behind the cocktail pairings made sense, very few enhanced the accompanying bites. The food and cocktails independently were mostly good with a few that fell on either side of that. The decor falls on the rustic side of a classic speakeasy. It looks like a saloon and is very narrow. The stools have no backs so no leaning back. The music was loud and from a single speaker which made hearing difficult. We had to ask for it to be turned down so we could hear the food and drink descriptions. There's a water station and small drinking glasses near the entrance which made getting water extremely awkward for patrons on the far side who had to squeeze by everyone else. Our host thankfully (eventually) gave us carafes of water. The food courses are literally bites you eat with your hands but there are no napkins. If you ask for one, you get a small, perforated square. Our host was professional but completely lacked warmth. Conversation flowed with only one customer while everything else sounded flat and unmotivated. For twelve courses and cocktail pairings, I think the price is very reasonable. I was prepared to order extra courses as mentioned in the website but between one cancelation and one aversion plus I'm not sure what else, a few extra courses were available at no extra charge and I was very satisfied with those. While I likely won't return unless I hear about some improvements, I'm glad I tried it and would recommend that anyone interested give it a chance. read more

What a fun experience! This place did not disappoint. The location is tucked away on the backside of a 3 story building. The is a long staircase that leads you up to the bar. The bar is very tiny. It reminded me of some of the bars in Golden Gai in Tokyo. Small, quaint, intimate and wonderful. The bar seats 10 people and it's by reservation only. The experience includes 12 cocktails/ small bites perfectly paired together, and then the option to choose up to 3 additional cocktail/food pairings if you choose. We arrived early so we also were given a pineapple popsicle (I forget what liquor was in it) and a tiny shot of blueberry liquor from Iceland. Then came the real event 12 perfectly paired cocktails with small bites. All the cocktails were made with natural sweeteners, such as agave and real fresh squeezed fruit juice. All the liquor and food is also high quality making it truly a treat. They change the menu as well based on what is in for the season, so I am really looking forward to going here again, maybe in the fall. Our bartender, Angel, was also knowledgeable and fun. Although some are interesting and others are not So memorable. Most of them were too sweet for me. You have to get your own water and there was no napkin which is a little shocking. I paid over $300 to get my own water. I feel like for the price they charge they could upgrade the chairs to something for comfortable and the seating area was just soooo narrow. We just had the address which took us to a door that we had to walk up the stairs and it opens into a dimly lit SPEAKEASY. It had a lounge & restroom, and almost looked like a few rooms to a house. The bar seats ONLY 9 PEOPLE. It's an intimate & cozy experience. They have 2 seating times per night at 6pm and 9pm. I loved 11/12 of the (tiny) cocktails. The only one I didn't like was just a personal preference because I don't like the flavor of liquorish. I LOVED all of the (mini) food pairings. Please keep in mind these "cocktails" are the size of a shot glass and although they are very carefully and wonderfully crafted into an amazing piece of art, they will most likely NOT get you drunk because they are SO TINY. The food was also AMAZING! All of the flavors of every course went together amazing, I could not be more happy with the quality and flavors. I wish the cocktails were just an little bigger, but the experience was still worth it. Martin is the most personable host and makes an effort to talk to each person as he distributed each course. I've read the other reviews and YES THE COCKTAILS ARE PRE-MIXED & most of the food is semi-prepped. But Martin is only ONE MAN, serving 9 people by himself. The courses came out fairly quickly because the prep time was minimal. Overall, for the price point, I wish the cocktails were slightly larger, the food pairings were a good size (one bite each). Do not go here during the summer. It was my birthday and it was awful. There's no AC!!! I went here last Saturday, which was almost 90 degrees. They only have one small fan. I couldn't even finish the course she made. I went out and stayed in the lobby. I was pretty upset why she didn't let us know there's no AC when it was heat wave warnings. This is a reservation only so she could contact us vis DM. There's no consideration for the customer as you know you need to pay for the reservation. We took some stairs up and were welcomed by Vicky as she was setting up. We loved the decor since it was very creepy and very 1920s-1940s, but whimsical. We were the first pair to show up, so we were offered some prosecco popsicles as we waited. There were 6 people in our seating for 7pm and 2 were late, so Vicky moved on with the rest of us. She was very friendly, attentive, and fun, so it helped our small group mingle and mesh. We celebrated my bestie's bday and a retirement for one of the ladies who were there. Everyone was very cool (Ms. Renee and Jasmine) and we had a blast going from one cocktail/bite course to the next. I think we went through 12-14 of them. I'm conflicted about my experience, but ultimately, the food just wasn't great. First, the food and drinks are prepared off-site, so the freshness is going to be limited. As far as anything's flavor- that was varied. Some of it was pretty good, others were relatively bland or basic. Other aspects were obnoxious. You can tell these hosts are really trained to drive home how cool and great Chef John is. One thing that kept coming up is how he is a "culinary trained chef", which is like saying a "musically trained musician". Vague and broad. The restaurant itself, which is supposed to look like an old speakeasy, was largely uncomfortable. The seats, which you're on for minimum two hours, are just rickety wooden bar stool things and you are shoulder to shoulder with everyone there. Overall it felt pretty grimy.
