This review is long overdue, but Kim is absolutely fantastic! I received a balayage, and I'm so glad she was able to transform my virgin hair into something natural, yet outstandingly gorgeous. If you're new to dying your hair and want someone who'll explain the process, give guidance on what's best for you and your hair based on a case to case basis, and a welcoming environment, book Kim! As a first-timer, I was extremely anxious and having second thoughts before the appointment. When I walked into the salon, all of my nerves faded when I was greeted and seated in the waiting area. On a side note, the salon is absolutely gorgeous -- there are a wide variety of plants everywhere and it was honestly refreshing to see so much greenery! When it was time for my appointment, I showed my desired picture, and Kim examined my hair and made sure to inform me about any potential issues if the bleach did not lift my hair to the color desired. I had a really great hair cutting experience at this salon the other day! The environment is clean and looks very nice and the staff were really welcoming and friendly! I am very thankful for Kim for the wonderful haircut! I had just gotten a haircut from another salon, where I was unable to get what I wanted. I was looking for another hair salon that could possibly fix my hair. I stumbled across the hair lab on yelp and was really glad that they also have an Instagram and a website for me to look through. I decided to make use of the option to get in touch through text and explain my situation, pictures of my current hair and inspo pictures of what I was looking for. I received a quick response in about 15 minutes, saying that they could fix my hair and that they had an opening a few hours later, same day. I also asked how long it would take and cost and decided to go ahead with the appointment. I came at the appointed time and was quickly welcomed in to get my hair washed. Kim then discussed with me what kind of style I was going for, while referencing the pictures I sent and let me know how we would proceed with my hair. I very much appreciate the chance to talk through what I wanted and what the cut would look like for me. The conversation went both ways, as I got to explain what I wanted and received helpful information on the hairstyle I was requesting. She worked her magic and gave me the color (teal/blue) I wanted with the beautiful root melt that makes it so easy to maintain. All I can say is you get what you pay for! Warm, professional, and high-quality service well worth the price! After a bad layered haircut, I wasn't feeling myself and was looking for someone I could trust would deliver on a face-framing, bouncy, long-layered cut. It's safe to say Tommy delivered that and so much more! Booking through the Hair Lab is super easy via phone call or text. I messaged Tommy directly on IG @tomstylin for an appointment. He works Saturdays and Mondays currently and was able to get me in quickly as a time I preferred. He's so incredibly warm and easy to talk to, gives the best scalp massage, and is so thorough and meticulous with his wet cut, touching up to perfection after drying. He reassured me that if there was anything I didn't like, he'd be happy to have me back for a touch-up, and even showed me how to put my new face-framing bangs in a roller as I had expressed my interest in doing so but didn't know the right technique. As someone with a lot of hair very fine in texture, no one has ever blown my hair to hold any sort of fullness for more than 20 minutes, but Tommy's technique and expertise resulted in a gorgeous blowout lasting DAYS. I've been with Kim for over 5 years and I'm so happy she has opened her salon! The salon is very clean and is located in a nice plaza with ample parking. I drive from West LA to get my hair done by her, so you know there's true some love and loyalty there... 'cause I definitely do not drive 1+ hours in 405 freeway traffic for anyone. Kim is one of the most patient and sincere hair stylists I've ever met. During the appointment, she is very honest with the results she can achieve and regularly checks in to make sure the work is up to par. Kim does her due diligence in obtaining your hair history and is so, so skilled at coloring hair. She is extremely meticulous when placing foils... she literally micro weaves each section so the blending is seamless. When she's working on you, Kim gives you undivided attention (which, in my experience, is rare). I've been to salons in that area where the stylist is working on 2-3 other clients at the same time and I am blow drying my own hair. I have never, ever had to blow dry my own hair with Kim. Her rates are extremely reasonable for the amount of work she puts into each client. I've referred a few friends of mine to her because they really liked her work. My appointments with her usually last 3-4 hours because of the coloring services, but they always seem way shorter because Kim is so delightful to be around! A bit of a delayed review, but the feelings still ring true! I stumbled upon this salon through Yelp and I am so glad I discovered this gem! I sent them a text asking for a quote along with some photos of how I wanted my hair. I then scheduled an appointment as soon as I could! There was only 1-2 other clients in the salon during the duration of my appointment and we were VERY spaced out (almost completely opposite sides of the room), so thank you for caring about your and your clients' health and safety! Many other salons I've heard about don't really follow COVID-19 protocols, as they want to book as many people as they can. Kim was really nice and professional; when I got there I couldn't decide between the two different colors/photos I had in mind, but she gave me some input and I went along with something that required less maintenance and I couldn't be happier with my end result! I definitely think I found my new go-to hair place and will recommend this place to everyone I know. The quality of their work is AMAZING as you can tell from all of their photos and reviews. It's unfortunate that I need to write a review but I think it's beneficial for those who would like to find a reliable salon. I am basing this on the customer service only as I was treated very unprofessionally by who I assume is the owner. I initially called to see if they could accommodate a wash and style for hair with extensions. She said yes and asked if I could come in the same day and even mentioned several openings. I explained I was looking for an appointment the next morning, she said yes 9am worked - GREAT! Right? She then said they require a $20 deposit via Venmo which i find strange but okay, deposit it is since I had full intention to come in. She then texts me the Venmo Information. This was around 11am (while I was on break) so I thought okay I'll pay this at lunch and got to work. Around 1pm, I get a text that simply says: "Hi, the 9am for tomorrows appt. is no longer available. Thanks for your interest." I was so confused. No attempt to confirm, no ask to find another time, literally nothing to even show she cares for the clients experience. She then replied that they're appointment only which I fully understand, but she quite literally had multiple same day openings - she could have simply said "is there another time" or if it's that they don't want to provide the service, just let people know so I didn't waste any time before a trip. Based on that unfortunately I'm giving this salon 1 star. I'm sure she'll be commenting something very passive aggressive as I've seen on some of these reviews, but good luck to her too. ;) read more

When I first saw her, my hair was a complete mess from me coloring it myself during the pandemic, and she managed to not only fix it but made sure the color faded so nicely too! If I have a bad experience somewhere, usually I just try to brush it off and forget about it. But in this case, I would like to share my experience and warn others to be careful about who you entrust to care for your hair. I called and asked if they would be able to take a walk in if I came in the next half hour, they said yes so I came in and was greeted by an older gentleman. I wanted something simple, a single color hair dye for medium-long hair, which they quoted me over the phone could be about $160. A little on the higher side, but it's fine, as I saw photos of their work I wanted to try out their services. So the gentleman seats me in the chair and then about 5 mins later, a stylist seats me, maybe she could be the owner, I am not sure. Anyways, I told her what I wanted which was a single color hair change. My hair is naturally dark brown but because I have done bleach and ombres about 2 years ago, half my hair starts to lighten and get a bit brownish, orange and brassy tone at the ends especially. She asked me when the last time I dyed my hair was, I told her it was a little less than a year ago, last February. I even showed her a picture of what my hair was like because I got my hair done specifically for a professional photoshoot. She then asked me if I was sure because my hair looks like it had work done or otherwise my hair grows really slow from the color difference when she examined my hair. I told her I was sure, as if I had a reason to lie about getting treatment on my hair. Anyway, she proceeded to make me feel really bad about the state of my hair. My sister is also a cosmetologist so she informs me of how to care for my hair which is why I try to wait as long as possible before I color my hair for a touch up. She kept insinuating "Since you say the last time you dyed your hair was "x" I need to know so that I can color your hair correct fully or it will not "x". I gave her a picture of one of the photos on their work posted on their social media and I told her I was aware she cannot give me the exact color, I know what it is, it is a balayage and I am aware they costs $300$600+ for that style. I told her specifically that I only wanted a single color hair similar to that tone which did not seem complicated for me to ask of a medium brown hair color. I asked her what it would cost since they gave me a quote over the phone and then she proceeded to deflect on the state my hair was in to justify a price increase from the $160 they quoted me over the phone. The longer our conversation went, the less confident I had in her touching my hair at all. If you are going to charge customers a PREMIUM price, give a PREMIUM service to match it. Her tone was very unprofessional and as uncomfortable as she made me feel, I hope this review will open her eyes as to how to treat a customer that is giving you their business. It does not matter how many photos you have to show the good work you have done if the customer service you offer is low class. read more

I'm attaching a photo of when I was informed you required a $50 deposit. I was never asked to make a $100 deposit. Anyone who reads through your reviews can see you require a $50 deposit, not $100. There's no need for either of us to lie, though it is pretty clear now why you require payment in advance. All in all - people make mistakes. That's okay. Just try to fix your mistake or make it right. If you can't make it right, don't charge the customer. It's really so easy. That is the main tenet of anything service related. Yes, I was late at my 1st appointment with you due to terrible Los Angeles traffic. I apologized for that. However you did take another client and I waited while you cut his hair. This is my second time going to Kim in the last year, and I plan to stay with her as long as she's styling hair!! I've had some pretty awful hair cuts in the past with uneven layers, but Kim was able to save the whole situation!! She also provided some incredibly useful tips to care for difficult growth areas and hairline issues. After an entire year of staying at home due to the pandemic, I decided to treat myself. I hadn't had a haircut that entire time, and the haircut I had some months (or a year?) before the pandemic was subpar. So my hair needed some love. I was excited because I had big plans, and Gigi was amazing pulling it off. Black hair to multi-colored hair! I am in love with it, and even days after I admire it and continue to have fun with it. Kim finally opened up her own salon and let me tell you, forget about the other Vietnamese hair salons where they talk shit about you because they think you won't understand (yes, I understand EVERY word, you hater-ass, bitter-ass, disgraceful old Vietnamese ladies). This salon is new, beautiful, spacious, and decorated super cute. Everyone here always abides by COVID safety guidelines. Masks on at all times, everything is impeccably clean. Kim is honest and skilled and will always let you know realistically if your hair is capable of getting the look you're going for. She speaks perfect fluent English (and Viet too obvi), always uses Olaplex on my brittle-ass bleached hair, and she can take black haired girls to fun platinum beauties in one sitting! I recently moved to OC from dtla so was looking for a new stylist that I can trust, especially in the time of covid. I came across the place on yelp and decided to give it a try. Here's my experience: Booking// I texted to inquire about their safety measures and a quote for ash balayage + haircut. After sending over a picture of my current hair and a picture of the hair color I was interested in, I was given a quote. I immediately got an appt within a few days and although I didn't get scheduled with the stylist I initially requested, it was fine since this was my first time here anyways. The $50 deposit was also pretty standard. During my appt// Gigi greeted me and after we went over my requests (i.e. highlights, balayage, a trim, the hair color I was interested in, me wanting a hair color that's easy to maintain and natural looking, as well as me not wanting to dye my roots and overburden my hair), she said no problem and began to work on my hair. I am usually the type that gives my stylist a lot of space to work so I don't really ask questions after voicing my basic requests. However, some time after she began, she started telling me how dry my hair was and had me sign a release form which kind of threw me off. I then saw that she started bleaching/dying more hair than I wanted including my roots so I got super nervous and asked her about it. I was told that these were what it takes to get to the color I asked for in the picture. I was also told that she already bleached my hair so she has to dye my roots to blend the color line. I reminded her that I told her I gave her the picture as a reference. Since she said "no problem" to all my requests, I honestly thought that I was getting my usual balayage highlights... Long story short, since I was already half way colored/ bleached, I went with whatever she was doing. The result came out fine and just like the picture I showed her. Being a bit stressed out but happy of the result, I was again thrown off when I was given the bill that was $50 more than the quote. I knew that a quote is just an estimate, but when I asked what the difference was for, was told that the quote I got was only for the coloring... at that point, I knew the miscommunication was not from me. I mean, if I asked for a quote for coloring + haircut and was told that they are an amount, I am sure anyone would think the amount is for BOTH.. This was not the first salon I've been to obviously but probably one of the most stressful experiences I've had lol The result did come out good and I appreciate Gigi being detailed oriented the entire time (also she apologized for the miscommunication, saying her English wasn't that great... although I was like I thought we were talking just fine..) if you wanted to give it a try, I'd suggest definitely make sure you understand each other clearly. On another note, in terms of covid, the salon was indoors, was pretty spread out for the most part and everyone was wearing masks at all times. read more

Long overdue review. Where to start?! Scheduling an appointment was super easy. Kim is very responsive and quick to get back to you. I had my appointment with Gigi and I couldn't be happier. She's super sweet and very easy to talk to. I was there for quite a few hours and the whole time there I was well taken care of. I was offered water and snacks throughout the process. Great customer service ! Went in for a hair treatment a week after seeing her and my hair just feels amazing and soft; especially for getting my hair bleached.
