The Handpulled Noodle is my favorite place to eat in Harlem. I travel a lot for work, but whenever I get home, the first meal I go for is their hand pulled lagman noodles with stir fry veggies. You can add beef, chicken and other meats, but their vegetarian Seitan is just as good too! So glad to have the options! For me, The Handpulled Noodle is the perfect meal to cap off work trips. Generally I order takeout in advance as I leave work (almost *always* Dapan-Niu, it's the best) and my meal is usually ready by the time I get to the restaurant (about a 20 minute trip). First impression: Mexicans cooking Chinese food being served to mostly white people while Jamaican music is playing from the speakers. Interesting. I met a friend here recently and we tried a few of the noodle dishes. I went with the chopped hand-pulled noodles (tasty) with veggies and seitan. While I'm very glad they have a veggie option, I can't say I was impressed with the seitan (which was kind of rubbery and looked like slices of soggy old bread) or the veggies, which were mostly red peppers. I also had the scallion pancake, which was good but not great. The decor is pretty and I really enjoyed sitting at the window and looking out at the street, but I can't say I was impressed with the food. The Handpulled Noodle is a really great spot in West Harlem. Packed in a small space, you take a step off of the busy streets of NYC into a dive spot fused with Asian cuisine. The food is good, quick, and from what I've heard authentic (or at least more so than ordinary American-Chinese take away). Despite its name, this spot has more than just noodles. It offers an array of dumplings and other appetizers. That said, going here and not ordering some noodles would truly, truly be selling yourself short. When I go, I typically order the Zha Jiang Mian spicy. For those that don't like spice, go mild. They do pack a punch. I would rank it a notch lower than habanero. This dish has a bold umami flavor regardless of the spice level with the added freshness of cucumbers. If you're a meat lover, it'd be a good staple. Play with your order. Get your noodles served in different ways. If you're in the area, revisit a ton or order in. When you order in, expect it to be just as good as going there. In terms of interior decor, just due to the size it's less impressive, but the counter style servicing was a smart choice to get more people in. Would I take a first date here? Maybe not. But it's somewhere you could mention and they'll definitely know you have good taste. read more

The Handpulled Noodle ~literally~ changed my life when they opened up shop right under my prior apartment building a few years ago. After I tried their food for the first time, I ordered pickup at LEAST once a week, and quickly started to show my face a bit too frequently within their doors. But I was never met with judgement! Instead, a friendly 'what up, Wolverine!?" greeted me at each entrance, and my order was always ready exactly when claimed it would be. Their dumplings are the best I've ever had. Their spicy noodle bowls are the bomb. Their noodle soups perk me up when I'm feeling sickly. And I wish I had a VAT of their white peach pekoe iced tea. I've since moved just outside of their delivery zone, but last night I walked a mile and a half just to treat myself to some delicious noodley goodness for old times' sake. I normally start bleeding out of my nose above 59th Street, but after a screening of Dunkirk at the Lincoln Center IMAX I decided to go to the restaurant from my saved Yelp list that was farthest to the north. That led me to 149th and the Handpulled Noodle, a place that seems like an unholy alliance between Xi'an Famous Food, Chipotle and all those Lanzhou Noodle shops in Chinatown. Sauces and noodle shapes are available to mix and match. I went with the cumin noodles to really get the comparison between Xi'an and here. My medium noodles were quite a bit more spicy than you'd get at the chainlet - they required a fair amount of water in addition to the (very refreshing) chrysanthemum tea in order to get down. The portion was larger too - I couldn't even have a bite of the vinegar-based potato slices that I ordered as a side. Overall things were well done here, and if I lived within a mile I'd definitely be a regular. I missed the tofu chunks of the most popular version at Xi'an, but the presence of Xinjiang style lagman and other noodle shapes would more than make up for the difference. The only thing missing here is proper seating - but they don't have that at Xi'an at first as well. read more

So, I remember when you guys opened up when I lived in the neighborhood and I came to try you guys and was instantly hooked! I pretty much started ordering from you guys on the weeeeekly! I love most of your dishes but have recently became a pescetarian again so I don't get any of the lamb, meat choices (which sucks because those were my favorite...ha ha!) I am not really a big fan of Seitan...it taste like a hard rubber sponge to me, so I wondered if you guys would ever include tempeh and tofu into the mix because that would be great for pescas, vegetarians and vegans alike! Also...a veggie dumpling option would be amazing as well! Sometimes the dumplings aren't fried fully as they break apart a lot... You all have gotten better with preparing food and having it ready in a more timely manner. I remember it taking hours to get food. Your staff that work behind the counter could be a little more personable and friendly...last week when I came I had to take my meds (I know TMI...) but I had asked the guy behind the counter if he could refill the water since it was empty and he paid me no attention and I waited for a bit and he never went to refill anything..Also I find that sometimes the phone isn't answered at all...as that same day I was calling to explain my order yet no one answered the phone. Other then that, I still travel every now and then if I am in that area visiting family to come and order from you guys! You need more locations! This is an uptown gem. I started going here years ago, but ended up moving out of the neighborhood; I would make sure to stop by if i was close to it and now that I'm back uptown, this place has become a go to for a warm home-cooked type meal. The hardest part is selecting between their various noodles and sides that they offer, but the staff is helpful and give great recommendations. Small but relaxed and unique storefront, this has been one way Uptown spots for years. Rustic, country food with amazing noodle texture that's hardly replicated elsewhere. First, let me simply state that everything is subjective. Now, with that out of the way this lowkey may have been my worst noodle experience, but hear me out. So we decide to get noodles from here, and I look at the menu and see the spicy lamb noodles. Given that I am ~intimately~ involved with the spicy lamb cumin noodles at Xi'an famous foods, I figure I have to try these noodles...I gotta compare you know? I must know who is best. I am told that that is a terrible choice and that they are incredibly spicy. What do you do when given advice that goes against what your stomach has already decided? You ignore it. I affirm my order. There is no turning back now. They are ready, that was quick. We go to the pick them up. With my mouth watering I carry the surprisingly heavy bag back to the apartment. I take out the containers and the first thing I notice is that they are brimming with food. That is a great sign. Upon opening the container I am hit with this incredibly acrid smell. I swear to you by my grandmother's tomato sauce, just smelling it would give you heartburn. No problem. Easy. I love spicy food. Eat it all the time; always have some tapatio in the fridge; I mean my mom grew hot peppers when I was a kid--we're Italian for Christ's sake. Something seems off. I forge onward. I shrug it off. It's no big deal. I take a look at the noodles. A few words came to mind: pale, lifeless, uncouth, gray. If you can envision a young noodle full of life and brimming with happiness, these noodles were the opposite of that. There was no fun being had here. Dead. Just despair. I had yet to eat that day (I only eat once a day but that is neither here nor there), so at that point I'm just trying to get some nutrients, fuel for the fire. Expectations have been lowered, everything is cool. I quickly grab my chopsticks and dig in. As the noodle enters my mouth and I begin to chew, several things happen. First, just pure heat envelopes my mouth, the kind of heat that doesn't really add flavor, it is just fire. I got this though, I used to eat lamb Nihari like every other Sunday. Bring it. Then, the spice-flavor combination triggers my memory, and as I swallow my first bite I am desperately trying to recall why the taste is so familiar. I am running through a catalog of places and cuisines. Was it this Middle Eastern place I go to? No. Could it have been my favorite Indian spot across the street? Decidedly not. My grandmother's peppers? Nope. All of a sudden it comes to me: the summer I spent in Tajikistan. Briefly, I spent a summer living with a host family and studying in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, and while they were a great family, my host mother just could not cook. There were some good side dishes and salads, but bless her the main dishes were s t r u g g l i n g. They just didn't work. At all. I would not even be able to describe this taste, but the similarity between these noodles and her cooking was uncanny. I am instantly aware that I hate my food. Now, I understand hate is a strong word so that is why I am using it. I also realize that the increasing heat of the spices had yet to abate. Upward it was soaring. I hiccup once. Twice. My god, I am hiccuping due to the spiciness. She asks me how it tastes. Not bad I say, and I continue onward. I am not willing to admit that she was right. Bite after bite, the heat increases. I begin sweating. Profusely. Several minutes pass and I burst into laughter. I can no longer take it. I concede to her that these noodles are, in fact, incredibly spicy. She asks if it is good otherwise. I hold my ground. Yes, its not bad I reply. We continue eating. Several more minutes pass. She offers up that her dish was not that good. I take this opportunity to clarify by stating that there is, in fact, nothing I like about my meal. We burst into laughter. I continue eating because there was no other food, did I mention I only eat once a day? She asks if I want to keep the leftovers. I pause and look at her. We laugh as we throw them away. read more

Tried Handpulled Noodle for the first time tonight. My friends and I are visiting from out of state and wanted a place that was convenient for delivery and offered decent Asian comfort food. I ordered the braised noodle bowl with lamb. It was very filling. Only wanted to eat about half of the portion. They give you a lot for a reasonable price. Ordered a side of chicken and mushroom dumplings which were very tasty. Wish there was a little more flavor to the bowl, but the ingredients were fresh and they had pleasant delivery and quick service. read more

I used to binge eat Ben and Jerry's and fresh mozzarella when I was sad, but now I just burn the emotions away with some rich, spicy, tingly broth from The Handpulled Noodle. Would I say the service is amazing? No. Is it the cleanest? Debatable. Do I feel like a stronger, happier person who can f*** shit up like a total badass after eating a bowl of noodles? Why yes, yes I do. Some actually criticism: I do feel like the noodles are undercooked, or could be pulled a bit thiner. I'm used to pulled noodles in China, and am accustomed to the way I was taught to make them there. This would be "5 star" if I thought the noodles were perfect, and if cook time was a bit faster. What's not to love? The Handpulled Noodle is my go to these days when I don't feel like cooking. I usually get some combination of the stewed pork noodles, a scallion pancake, and the sautéed broccoli (the broccoli is usually to make me feel a little better about all the comfort food I'm about to eat, but it's fresh, garlicky, delicious in its own right). The stewed pork noodles are always super tasty, chewy, and filling. I'm not sure what sauce comes with the scallion pancake, but it complements the pancake so well that I usually order extra. I recently ordered the Chicken and Shiitake Mushroom wonton soup to switch things up. I was a little nervous to branch out, but it's a delightful, lighter option than my usual pork noodles. Ordered delivery from these guys and the food tasted fresh and decent! I was disappointed in the chicken soup because it was super bland, and the noodles were a little gloopy/gummy. I also ordered medium spicy and it was unfortunately not spicy at all. Next time I might try the lamb cumin soup, which it sounds like everyone loves.
