    A soso cheeseburger
    Robert C.

We passed through La Pine on our way to Bend from Shasta. If you've never done that drive before, it's one LOOONG straightaway with the same scenery for HOURS. Not really anything else along the way except pine trees and sand. By the time you exit, you're just looking for some sort of relief for your eyes. I didn't find it here. I think based on the name we were expecting something that was more Whole Foods and less 7-11. OK maybe a little better than 7-11, more like a little league snack shack hamburger from a frozen patty. The menu's did have large enough font to read, but the layout was nonexistent. Just laminated sheets of paper printed on fluorescent paper stock. Prices were soso. About $23 per person including tip. Was the price to quality ratio there? Not at all. The burger came slathered with mayonnaise which I find absolutely disgusting. If people want mayo, just put it in a little cup on the side. Don't force it. I can go into all sorts of snarky reasons why I don't like it, but just trust that I don't like it. The bun basically fell apart as I ate. It could have been grilled or toasted to avoid this but it wasn't. The "Stack" as I like to call it was out of order. Now some places prefer a produce top stack (produce on top of the patty) but personally I prefer the bottom produce as the lettuce does a good job of keeping the patty from getting soggy. The cheese... Just look at my picture. "Aged Cheddar" ? Looks like just standard slices. The bacon was OK. Way too many tots. Pattie tasted OK but not $15 OK. Overall most of my burger tasted like it had been previously cooked, components reheated then reassembled. Bun was stale, dry, fell apart, meat was kind of meh. Pretty much everyone in my family of 4 said it wasn't that great as we drove off. Later on that night my son got stomach sick and had to expel his lunch out the way it came in. It seemed slow when we were there. Maybe things are fresher when it's busy, but it will be a long long time before I'm in the area again to try it, if ever since we were just passing through.

The best Reuben on the planet! A slab of corned beef, blanketed with Swiss and a layer of kraut. It's with the 400 mile drive just for the sandwich. Great people, great service. A must to stop for lunch.

Great spot in La Pine. We called ahead and the order was ready when we arrived. The steak and cheese sandwich was good. I highly recommend the hand scooped shakes. The chocolate peanut butter shake was Devine. Friendly staff! Very casual.

But this place in Bend... this is serious burger territory. First thing you notice: they're not messing around with the menu. Just burgers that understand what a burger is supposed to be. Double patty. Brioche bun. Cheese doing its job. America. I ordered The O.G. because I respect tradition. American cheese, caramelized onions, burger sauce. Simple system. Works great. Like a pickup truck that starts every time. My buddy got The Popper which is basically what happens when a jalapeño popper and a burger start collaborating. Bacon, jalapeño cream cheese, ranch. It looked like something a scientist made to test the limits of happiness. Fries were solid. Soda cold. No weird nonsense. Just burgers doing burger things. Only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is because if I lived closer I would probably eat here too often and that feels medically irresponsible. I'd give it 6 stars if Yelp understood burgers better.

Update review. We keep getting a male server who is stressed out and impatient. Makes us feel…read morerushed. Acts like he's a great waiter and like we're unworthy customers. He sweats and pushes us to order and eat fast, doing that waiter thing when they pretend they are not rushing you. "Just checking if you need that plate taken away." Not fooling anyone. Brusque to my brother who is into fine wines and requested tastes of some by-the-glass wines before committing to a glass or a bottle. My wife stated she is uncomfortable around the server. We don't go to the Open Door much now. Old review. A real romantic spot. Great drinks. My wife loves it. Sitting outside is best but the bar is good too. Some nights they put tables in the art gallery out front and you sit around the paintings and jewelry, kind of fun. There used to be a waitress named Kristen or Kirsten, a lady with long hair and clogs, the best server I've ever had and I don't just mean in Central Oregon. The Open Door is the probably the best dining experience in Sisters. Living in Tumalo and working throughout Oregon, I go to Sisters often. Unfortunately Sisters isn't a great town for food. The Open Door has some very-good food, and some pretty-good food. You never know which it's going to be. The halibut, meatballs, and lasagnas are solid. Berries and cream dessert is great. The menu doesn't change much over the years. If my wife didn't love it I wouldn't go back so often. Get bored eating the same dishes over and over. When my brother and his grown kids visit they like the atmosphere, especially those small houses outside with the plants. However they have trouble finding a selection that works for their way of eating, allergies, one is vegan and one is lactose intolerant.

The vibe was peaceful and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind. Service was attentive, though a bit on the slower side, we waited almost an hour for the main course. They do have a kitchen break between 3:30-4:30 PM, and I'd recommend making a reservation if you're planning to visit during peak hours. The food was fresh, flavorful, and creatively presented--it's clear the chef enjoys experimenting with unique flavor combinations. My husband tried the seafood lasagna, which was a tasty and satisfying treat. The scallops dish was also delicious, though slightly too salty for my taste and quite light--it came with a small amount of polenta and a vegetable purée, so I found myself a bit hungry afterward. Many people around us were ordering pasta, and it looked fantastic--definitely something I'd love to try next time. Overall, a beautiful place with great food and a memorable atmosphere. Highly recommend!

Between the exceptionally good food at Hook and Plow, a most pleasant hotel experience, and a memorable trip to the High Desert Museum; our trip to Bend turned out to be a pleasure instead of the miserableness I expected. This was more than enough for the three of us and we left full, happy, and with three large to-go boxes. The flavors of the various dishes were amazing. We were greeted by the host and seated quickly. We started our meal with a delicious non-alcoholic drink and the Chef's Board: a charcuterie with an assortment of cured meats, rustic bread, and various spreads. That came out pretty quickly. Unfortunately, our main courses came out much, much later and lukewarm. Luckily, the food was good enough that it made up for the temperature. I had the NY strip steak. The steak and the Boursin mashed potatoes alone were very good. The pickled onions and chimichurri complemented the meat very well. The meal was supposed to include brussel sprouts but came with a grilled broccoli cauliflower assortment instead. My wife had the Scallop Risotto which was also a great recommendation from the server. In reality, The Hook & Plow deserved 3 1/2 stars but that's not an option on Yelp. It may have been an off night for the staff, so I will give them the benefit of doubt. We would be open to trying it again sometime in the future.

The pepper wasn't the problem, and being snide to a customer who hadn't complained or asked for anything despite my disappointment in the dish was unnecessary and rude.
