When the employee took my order, she repeated it back correctly as two sesame bagels and two everything bagels. However, when I received my order and checked it before leaving, I discovered that I had only been given two sesame bagels and one everything bagel. When I politely asked about the missing everything bagel, the employee insisted that I had only ordered one. She also refused to provide her name when asked. Instead of resolving the issue professionally, I was required to pay again for the missing bagel. The dismissive attitude and lack of customer service were disappointing. As a former New Yorker, I was equally disappointed with the bagels themselves. The restaurant promotes a New York-style bagel experience, but these bagels did not resemble the authentic New York bagels I grew up eating. They lacked the characteristic chew, texture, and flavor that make New York bagels famous. The bagels were also barely toasted. Rather than having a crisp exterior and warm center, they seemed only lightly warmed. A properly toasted bagel should have some crunch and color, and these simply did not. Mistakes happen in every restaurant, but how those mistakes are handled is what matters. My recommendation to future customers is to carefully inspect their order before leaving the counter. Unfortunately, based on this experience, both the customer service and product quality fell well below expectations.

Sandwich shops are a rare find nowadays, but The Hat still stands strong. Their business strategy seems to be to serve food that is slightly insane. The Sandwiches are great. It's what they're known for - it should be! I love getting their steak sandwich au jus. They really do have the best pastrami around, but note that it's a pastrami *dip*, so it's going to be oily unless you ask for it otherwise. As for the insanity that I mentioned earlier, all you have to do is look at their fries. They always give you more then you should be able to eat, but then they go a step above. There's chili fries, cheese fries, chili cheese fries, 'wet' fries (read: fries in gravy), and pastrami fries. I'm not saying the insanity is a bad thing. It's actually a positive. It's just a little crazy. I have yet to try the pastrami fries (I always forget when I go there!), but they look wonderful. read more

Dehumanizing staff members. Poor person living on the street came in with some change to possibly buy a meal to only be told by the cash register girl that he couldnt be inside their restaraunt. I gave the man some money for food and another woman bought him a meal. Thank god there is humanbeings that still have heart. If staff members have no heart and simply dehumanize other humans, then they do not deserve business. I rather take my money elsewhere. Every living thing on this planet deserves at least a meal. I understand The Hat is a Southern California institution but things change. The greed of this place, you have to take out a loan to eat a fricking pastrami sandwich. On top of that the quality has gone down tremendously. Higher price, less taste doesn't add up. I use to crave the chili cheese fries, but the last few times I've had it I've been bitterly disappointed it's just unappetizing. It has been years since we've been here. They put lots of meat in the sandwiches, and our favorite is the roast beef. The beef, as well as the pastrami, is very tender and juicy. They go very well with their soft breads, and their flavors are enhanced when dipped in a flavored broth/sauce. We can add anything else in our sandwiches besides the meat like honey mustard, chili, and pickles. Price is also good, service is quick though there is always a long line. They have HUGE portions, you can make a second sandwich with all the meat they put in the sandwiches. We ordered 2 pastrami sandwiches, chili cheese fries with pastrami, tamale with chili and three small drinks (free refills). Lots of food!!! The sandwiches were overstuffed with pastrami falling out, we couldn't finish the sandwiches. We ate half the chili fries, again we couldn't finish that ether, took that home too. We both used to live up in the San Gabriel Valley and they had them there and we were so happy to have one close to us now.
