In the Muskegon area and needed a quick, late lunch. Yelp didn't let us down! No appetizers as we did have a dinner coming up. We both opted for a half sandwich and soup. We enjoyed our lunch today at the Hearthstone. There are a lot of tasty options on their menu for most dietary needs and interests. My mom got a side salad and French onion soup. The soup was delicious but she said it could have been a little hotter. Our friend and I both ordered the chefs special salad - roasted butternut squash with grilled salmon. The salmon was fresh and cooked perfectly. Great taste. I loved the hot honey and vinaigrette! The only critique I have about the salad was the greens could be fresher - they were a little soft. Last time we went to Hearthstone was in the early 2000's. Recently, we met our family up in North Muskegon and decided to return to Hearthstone. And we're so glad we did. Same, great fresh dishes we remembered. The (squash and cilantro?) soup was delicious and had a perfectly pureed texture. Turkey club on toasted marble rye was the perfect combo. Others had the Chicken Milanese and French dip. Everyone left happy. Service was proactive, attentive, and even steered us into a great red wine pairing. We won't wait 20 years to return. My wife and I eat here a lot as this is her favorite restaurant in the Muskegon area. I ordered whitefish and she got some kind of a beet salad. Both meals were prepared to perfection. The meal were delicious. Our service was excellent. everybody that came to our table was polite, smiled and answered the questions that we had for them. The Hearthstone has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, we'd pick up their soup on cold days, and if I was lucky, I'd get to come here for my birthday. I was even that middle schooler who dragged her friends in after a Sailor Celebration just for crème brûlée and probably tipped badly (still sorry about that). In high school, Mondays meant their steak deal between classes and band practice. After moving away, it had been almost 10 years since I'd been back. This summer I begged my boyfriend, a longtime Hearthstone skeptic, to go here for our anniversary dinner. We ordered a bottle of Malbec, escargot, beef carpaccio, the pork tomahawk special, Wienerschnitzel à la Holstein, and of course crème brûlée. The service and the food were incredible, and we both agreed it was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. He even admitted he's a fan now. We were in town for a rather difficult Dr. appointment which happened to be on my parents' 65th anniversary. I made a reservation, as The Hearthstone has always been a family favorite. This time, however, the service was not great. I indicated on our reservation that we were celebrating an anniversary, yet no mention was made of it until we brought it to their attention...again. My parents each ordered the same cocktail. One was quite sweet, while the other not at all. All day my dad had looked forward to one of their soups, only to have the waiter forget to bring it. When I mentioned we'd like it to go do he could enjoy it later (as our meals meals had arrived) no compensation was given. Our dinners were delicious, but the level of service that we have come to expect was lacking. It was especially disappointing as we came from out of town to celebrate a special event. read more

Inside has an old timey historical elegance feel that has been worn down. It's extremely dark and dim lit. The black ceiling and dark red walls added to the dark vibe. It's on the pricier side as with most bistros except the quality of food didn't feel valued at the listed prices. The only menu item that stood out was the fish soup that was served that day. It was delicious, ample fish flavor and a nice tomato base. The spinach dip itself was fine and the shaped chips were a cool touch but it was stale. The burger was dry and didn't have much going for it. The veal was fried nicely in a thin batter, but it was served with a plain fried egg and plain potatoes. This dish could use something else to balance it. There's potential here but with these prices, I definitely expected a higher caliber of food. read more

My Mr made reservations for Friday 11/23/24 at 7pm. This is a VERY popular restaurant in our area. It's been an institution for close to 50 years! We arrived early for our reservation and we were informed that they were running a bit behind. We chose to order a couple cocktails at the bar while we waited. The "bar" is a stretch. There are 2 seats and there isn't a good space to order a cocktail. The area is SUPER cramped and no matter where you stand you're in the way. The woman that took our drink order was very friendly and made our cocktails quickly. He had the Razz-berry Palmoma and I had a vodka drink with elderflower liquor that I cannot remember the name of... it said the cocktail had mint, but that's ALL I tasted. Not my favorite. We settled our tab at the bar to make sure we tipped her, and headed to the "lounge" while we waited for our table. To be clear - the "lounge" is a hallway with some tables. Our table was ready relatively quickly and we were waited on by Nate (I think ‍). He was personable and efficient. The first time I came to Hearthstone, my Mr brought me for the cheddar cheese soup. At the time it was served with cheddar cheese popcorn on top, that's how I knew he loved me. My favorite things - cheese soup with cheese popcorn!? YES, PLEASE. I had been thinking about this soup since he told me we were going to the Hearthstone for dinner. IT WASN'T ON THE MENU!? When we asked our server he said 'there isn't room on the menu for everything. If you go - ask about the souper secret menu (see what I did there?) it's so worth it. I had a bowl of the cheddar cheese soup - now served with CHEESE BALLS and he had the French Onion soup. We loved them both. But the cheddar cheese soup was better. For our entrees he had the Chicken Milanese Florian's it was INCREDIBLE! The chicken was fried to perfection and the sauce was delectable. I had the Beef Bourguignon and it was ok, but it was so salty I couldn't finish it. Disappointing. While the beef was tender, the peas and carrots were the perfect accompaniment, and the Yukon mashed potatoes could not have been better - the salty sauce made the rest of my entree almost inedible. We each had a second cocktail - he had the Godfather and I had an espresso martini. Both were delicious! I ordered the peanut butter pie to go. It's still a favorite. It's one of the best desserts I've ever had. In summary, I would recommend dining at Hearthstone at least once if you haven't been. I'll leave it to you of you decide to go more than that. read more

We dined at The Hearthstone on a friend's recommendation. We did not find a lot of options for nice fine dining in the Spring Lake, Grand Haven, Muskegon area so we were thankful our friend told us about it. Our server, Carson was very knowledgeable regarding the menu offerings. He also suggested a nice bottle of wine. He was super nice. We enjoyed the burrata & crostini which was served with pepper jelly over a bed of greens. We also enjoyed the cheese soup that was garnished with cheese puffs and the whitefish which was delish. We loved the succotash it was served with. We finished it off with a made in house slice of peanut butter pie which was absolutely divine. Our only issues were the booth we were originally seated at was uncomfortable but they moved us promptly and we had to ask a few times for empty dishes to be cleared from our table. Minor issues. We dine here regularly. The menu is good and the food is always consistent and very good. It has great atmosphere and a cool vibe. It really could easily be a 4 or even 5 star restaurant but for 2 things: service and paper on the tables. The service there is very inconsistent. Sometimes it is really good. Sometimes it's simply adequate, and sometimes it's downright lousy. They really need to find and train good people that would more appropriately represent the bistro. Lastly, they put paper on all the tables which is something you typically see in much lower class restaurants. It's noisy and is always in the way which is very annoying. A restaurant of this caliber and price point should definitely have linen table cloths. The paper is downright tacky, cheesy, and cheap looking and feeling! read more

There were these cute gazebos with furniture or tables that could be used to wait for the table, and we enjoyed taking advantage of those. Okay....this is such an amazing spot!! The staff is off the charts spectacular! We lived downtown Chicago for decades, The Hearthstone staff can match any of the finer establishments in Chicago. They are professionals. Speaking of, we had Melissa tonight. 10/10! I am not a burger person, but my husband's Boursin burger gifted me the essence of angels in every bite I stole. I had the Chicken Milanese salad. Why have I never had this before??? Pounded chicken with Parmesan and spices with a salad on top. It was our anniversary and we were gifted dessert. A dark chocolate pie with a hint of coconut. They have wines available from affordable to exquisite. We are more affordable folks so the Justin Cab was our delight. This place screams date night. Visited for the first time and it was AMAZING. I wanted to try as many of the soups as possible so the server suggested I do a trilogy of soups. It's basically three soups to try. I tried the cheese, the gumbo, and their signature onion. All of them were amazing. Especially the French onion. For appetizer, I ordered the carpaccio, the Fried goat cheese, and the spinach and artichoke dip. They were all very good. After all these appetizers we were pretty full, but I still wanted to try an entrée. I decided to go with the wedge salad and add steak to it. The steak was done to perfection and the wedge salad was cut perfectly so it wasn't overwhelming. The server we had was quick, and very attentive. As far as the ambience and the decor, it was very cozy and reminded me a bit of European restaurants where space is tight, but you're not feeling crowded. I would consider the attire of the patrons to be a little more dressier than casual based on what everyone was wearing but definitely did not feel stuffy. I will be going back because they have several more items on the menu that I want to try. read more

We don't visit as often because of the jostling that is often constant from people in the adjacent booths. There is no solid core backing behind the padding. It gets truly annoying. My husband and I couldn't decide if the ceiling was dark green or actually black, either way it was a nice contrast with the wooden floor, grey and black leather booths, and white craft paper table cloths. Crayons setting on the table, adults and children alike can get artsy while they wait. My husband throughly enjoyed the blackened pork chop, creamed corn and cheesy potatoes. I had the truffle and mushroom pasta made with creamy cashew dairy free sauce. This place is amazing! So good it could easily be a raving success in Chicago (where I live). It's fancy and upscale but they're family friendly and even have kids menus, crayons, and staff that's nice to kids. Service is top notch. Food and wine are even better. They have high chairs and boosters, kids cups, and lemonade. We got: - cast iron seared filet mignon w/Chicago seasoning & Cabernet wine sauce. We ordered it medium rare and it was cooked perfectly to temp. The crispy calabrese potatoes & garlic broccolini that came with it were both a hit. Some of the best steak I've ever had. Yum. - wester Ross Scottish smoked salmon grenobloise w/lemon caper butter. The potatoes, creamed spinach & brioche croutons were all fab. - 5 cheese mac & cheese w/prosciutto. This was the weakest link, but still good. And paired with their homemade hot sauce it turned out pretty great. Be sure not to miss their crème brûlée, along with some of their deals (e.g. - half off wine bottles on Thursday, or free dessert on your bday). This is the best place in Muskegon by far. Reservations are recommended, but they take walk ins too. They have igloos also. One of our new fav places for sure. Should we find ourselves in Muskegon again, we're coming here running! read more
