This is such a great community spot for the Lakewood/Lake Highlands scene. This place is multiverse to me meaning that its breakfast/coffee vibe is just as impactful as its evening cocktail and dinner vibe. Small, intimate and excellent quality in the kitchen. Wish I could give you no stars. And the fact that this is over a cup of coffee is crazy. The server was rude to me about where I was sitting outside. And the sun was in my face so I moved over a table and he told me I needed to wait to be seated. Plenty of tables open. There was just one couple that wanted my table that he was growing favoritism too since I was only having coffee. Love story short, rude staff. And he didn't give a damn. Everything here is fantastic. We love all the food and the drinks. One thing that is less than fantastic is it super noisy. We ate outside last time to avoid the noise even though it was a little cold it's much nicer when you can hear each other speak to one another. The deviled eggs are amazing. The height is a real mom and pop place. The owner's wife makes the most juicy burger. They always know the right temperature. The staffs are so friendly. They seemed happy to work rather than crumpy and angry. It makes the resturant very welcome. The store are trendy and spotless, i love all the wood interiors. Food: good. I usually hate dry soy veggie sausage in other places but the one I tasted here was not bad at all. But if the service gave me a choice, I would have loved a better substitute. The granola and pancakes were also good. Service: Very bad. I believe this is where my disappointment lies. I got a sense that the restaurant may be suffering and have issues keeping head above the water, I can sense it in the frugality (no condiments for tables) but felt this is affecting customer experience. They did not entertain dietary restrictions. They said they will be charging extra. I ordered cappuccino. A fly took a dive in it 2 sips into it, I requested if they can get me another cup. Although I did get another cup, I sensed resentment in the waiter for requesting it which led me to think the coffee may be compromised as it did not taste good. Ambiance: it's a nice place. What you'll like: the cozy neighborhood space, the food and the cocktails. I'm a pescatarian and they were out of one of the two seafood options on the small menu, but my lonely fish entrée was nevertheless stellar. My husband said he enjoyed his pork chops--well seasoned, first rate gravy and big mound of delicious mashed potatoes (I had a bite). That sounds like a lot of good stuff, and it is. But now let's talk about what you may not like so much. Woo boy. BAD SEATING RULES. REALLY BAD. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. We walked into a completely empty restaurant (except for the bar) for a very early dinner. We wanted to sit beside each other at the front by the window. Ha ha. Too bad. The seating dude sailed right past me into the very back and dropped our menus on a two top with a chair across from the banquette, and walked away well before I could catch up with him. One of life's tiny but strangely disturbing indignities--being given the worst table in an empty restaurant by some dude who acts like you're invisible. Which to him, apparently, I was. Anyway, as a practical matter, I explained to our somewhat nicer waiter that my husband cannot hear a word I say from the other side of the table in a restaurant. And this was before they seated a family next to us complete with two toddlers, one of whom proceeded to melt down impressively. Yes, seated next to us. In an otherwise empty restaurant. Thanks again, cold cruel seating dude. (Note to families with small children: this is a bar centric adult restaurant. Not a great choice for littles.) Our wary waiter did let us pull another sliver of a two top over so that we could at least sit together, warning us that he might "need it later." Uh, OK... We should have just left. But we were hungry and decided to laugh and lump it. That martini I knocked back helped. Good bartender. My husband and I were in the White Rock area for church that morning a little early and were not very familiar with the area so we just drove around and stopped at The Heights hoping they had some quick breakfast available! . We really weren't expecting much I mean, it was a random spot for us and it was pretty small and cozy but It was the best surprise! I decided on the jalapeño cheddar biscuits and eggs breakfast and WOAH, seriously I can't stop thinking about those biscuits!! They were PACKED with flavor and the gravy on top of them was complimented them perfectly! The bacon was even delicious nice and thick and crispy! . Our church is usually closer to home but we missed the early service that day so we drove out to White rock and I'm considering going there more often as an excuse to stop and have those biscuits more often ! Visited here for the first time. It did not disappoint. We got there around 6 pm, were quickly greeted and seated. The server was very friendly, took our drink order and went over the specials for the day. We ordered speciality made martinis, half Chopin/half Hendricks gin, and they were perfectly made. My wife got the mussels and even though I had had a Whataburger, Jr. for lunch, I had read so much about their burger that I just had to give it a try. I went with the plain burger and it was great. Perfectly seasoned, right temperature and the bun was perfect for it. Overall, I can't wait to go back and try some of the other items on the menu, like the chicken wings, chicken pot pie or the pot roast. Great dining experience. read more

Let's just say that as a first time customer our Server/Bartender, "Cindy" sure knows how to make you feel VIP! Especially when she hand picks mint for your mojito (especially when it is 39 degrees outside)! 3/23/19 Came back because of the good service we got a while back. We received the worst customer service by the hostess. There was a table open for us to sit but She was saving it for a potentially bigger party. Next to that table was a party of two people with a same size table. I asked why we could not be seated at the same size table as the people that were already seated. She responded that it was timing issue. Wrong answer. Two people turn over quicker than a larger group. It is a shame that she gave us bad customer service. The Heights is FANTASTIC! We came on a Saturday night around 6:30 with a group of 7 and were able to be seated immediately. Every person in our party was beyond impressed with their meal, as well as the service, and out of 7 people we truly had not one complaint the entire dinner. Our waiter Tom was great!! Super fun and joked with us the whole meal while being very attentive. I had the pot roast (which was a very large portion and others had the catch of the day, pork chop, steak frites, and mussels and everyone loved their meal. The mussels sauce is incredible. Visited for brunch this weekend. Humble exterior and interior, but the food was nothing shy of extravagant. Toasted granola, oatmeal pancakes with praline syrup (I added berries on top). I think it qualifies as a signature dish - I've never had it quite like this anywhere else and they have totally nailed it. Also important: Bloody Mary's. Only had one sad little lime to garnish, but that's of no concern, because they use the good mix. Thick, spicy, and delicious. You run the risk of getting straight V8 and vodka when you order a BM, but not at The Heights. Only four stars because we waited 20 minutes from being seated until I finally flagged down a waiter. I'm fine with waiting as long as I've got a beverage, but to wait that long without even placing a drink order was a bummer. read more

Hello Yelppers and Yelppetts! If you love pot roast and collards this is your place. ( I don't even like pot roast.) The pot roast has an essence of sage with cinnamon. It delicately falls apart. No knife required here. I can make a meal out of the collard greens on their own. They are hearty and delicate all in the same bite. They are a bit pricey so go with that in mind. The Heights is the perfect addition to Lakewood! The new owners came in and remodeled the old Legal Grounds space by lifting the ceilings, opening the blinds, adding a long beautiful bar, and reconfiguring the tables - which makes the space feel more open, less cavernous and less on top of your neighbor feel. Many of the line cooks and wait staff were carried over which means that you can order anything from the old LG menu if you like. This is their way of paying homage to the old joint and the regular customers who were upset about the change. My husband and I decided to try our breakfast first and we were not disappointed. We arrive with our new born and massive stroller which I was expecting eye rolls or annoyed servers when instead we were greeted with friendly smiles and helpful hands. We were seated at the last table near the kitchen, which in the old space would not have been accessible with a stroller but because of the reno was easy as pie to get in and out of. The menu is nothing massive or crazy, just solid clean and easy. We decided one sweet and one savory - a shirt stack of the oatmeal pancakes from the old Legal ground menu, which comes with a side of protein (we opted for the bacon, duh) and the huervos rancheros (I don't speak Spanish not can I hardly spell in English) Everything was great. The pancakes are a little heavy because of the oatmeal but you don't feel like a blob after eating them either. Perfectly cooked and toped with the house made granola, dab of whipped cream and some fresh berries. The bacon on the side was crunchy and not greasy - just how I like it - with a bit of a Smokey flavor so when I dipped it into the syrup from the pancakes it was the perfect combo bite of salty and sweet. We also got the huervos rancheros. Don't judge me if I spelled that wrong. I am too lazy to Google it to see if it's write. Any who. They were great. Served with strips of crispy tortillas, side of salsa (which looked and tasted home made - if I am remembering correctly the old place had like old do Paso from the can...). The beans were nice and smokey like the bacon - they almost had a new orleans red bean flavor. Eggs perfectly cooked and seasoned. No salt or anything needed. Cheers guys! Daddy Jack's owner operators have set up a bistro in Lakewood center. The Heights is a nice spot for a weekday dinner. The crowd is very neighborhoody, a lot of friendly folks looking for a decent meal on a Wednesday night. The vibe is that of an upscale wine bar, but it does not cross over into "fine dinning" territory. There are some great classics like Steak Frittes, but also down-menu offerings like sandwiches and burgers. A full bar is staffed by very competent bartenders who mix up a terrific Old Fashioned. The brains behind the operation have stocked a good wine list. My wife and I had a lovely meal there. The special that night was pork chops with mushroom risotto and some greens. The pork was cooked beautifully, though the risotto was the standout. Creamy and earthy with a delicious mushroom funk. Our meal was not anything a good home cook could not turn out themselves, but everything was well executed. The Heights is a little caught between concept and the neighborhood market. They are striving to create a fine dinning offering, but most of the crowd here wants a good burger for a modest price. Worth a stop in on a weeknight when you're too tired to cook and want a nice night out. read more
