I can understand the mixed reviews. Came for our anniversary dinner. They made us feel special with a couple of glasses of Prosecco. We ordered champagne but it tasted off. We ordered the raw bar tower for two. Half the oysters tasted off. Clams shrimp and lobster were very good though. Salmon ceviche was ok but the caper infused vinaigrette was a bit much. Lump crab meat was fantastic. Frito misto was also very solid. Radicchio salad was a miss - not balanced and too salty. Pastas overall were fine as were the sides. Perhaps we didn't order the best choices there. For the price we expected a lot more. The view was definitely the best part of our experience. That and the fries. read more

Visited 07/25/19 for our 26th anniversary dinner. Everyone said it's a great 'romantic spot' and it was... is. We started off with "Sample of the Seas"... Not a huge assortment of seafood (lump crab, 1 lobster leg, 1 crab leg, 2 shrimp, 2 oysters) all very good, but a bit pricey for what you get. My wife had the soft shell crab special... on a veggie medley/puree. Softshell crabs are one of her favorite meals and she thoroughly enjoy the Highlawn's version of it. I had the Organic pork chop (Tuscan pancetta and sweet corn polenta, braised escarole, fennel-cherry jam and aged sherry reduction) As good a pork chop as I've ever had. Done perfectly (medium rare... ish) A truly 'melt in your mouth' cut of meat. The sauce with the polenta (I'm a HUGE fan of polenta) with the escarole and sauce really went perfectly with the nice thick pork chop. We weren' t going to have a dessert... and then we did. We shared the hot fudge sundae which was terrific. Vanilla ice cream in an almond lace 'cup', candied walnuts, whipped cream and hot fudge. I would visit Highlawn just for this dessert it was so good. Nothing fancy (except maybe for that almond lace cup...) Nice! No coffee this time. $12 a cup of coffee is a bit steep... ok a LOT steep for coffee, so we ate our dessert with the last few drops of an excellent Bordeaux we ordered at the beginning of our meal. You'll want to either come early or stay late until the lights come on in NYC and NJ. The view is truly worth the trip. There's also a memorial to 9/11 where many people came to watch the horror of our World Trade Center being attacked. Another excellent reason to visit... I feel bad for those who gave this place 1 or 2 stars. We truly enjoyed everything about Highlawn. A bit pricey perhaps... but we knew that I mad the reservations. Hubby and I come often to the bar area when we don't have enough time because even the "bar food " is so very good! My favorite favorite and only that much more delectable when had rare, is the open face skirt steak sandwich with tender mushrooms, a side salad with a sweet balsamic dressing and the best onion rings you will ever have! Decided to book a dinner for my birthday with my girlfriends here after hearing good things about the highlawn. This place was even more beautiful than what I saw online. Views in every direction, fantastic drinks at the bar and everything on the menu and around us at other tables looked incredible. He was extremely understanding of our situation and got our deposit very quickly. If I was a future/ prospective bride, I absolutely feel like I was in good hands working with the new owner. We had a 70th birthday party here for my mother-in-law. It seemed like this was the first party they've ever had mainly because the manager, Paul, was completely useless. Each time you visit the venue you'll likely meet with a different manager and they don't communicate with one another or take notes so the person that happens to be working the night of your event will not know all your expectations. Paul planned to have our guests wait an hour and a half to have hors d'oeuvres. We were clear with another manager that we wanted our guests to eat right away. I believe they postponed letting our guests know that food was ready to be had in another section of the room in order to serve less food to our guests. There was also no one to guide our guests to the party room upstairs. Our guests said they came into the restaurant and were confused about where to go. We ended up generously tipping the valet guy and asked him to tell our guests the party was upstairs. We repeatedly had to ask the waitstaff to do things because Paul was doing nothing. He seems better suited to manage a library. We spent a fortune on this party and we expected a top notch event but it was a huge disappointment. Every time I come here I am blown out of the water. From the valet to the servers and the food every second is top notch. The soft shell crab and crab cake appetizer were spectacular. The Strip steak and filet mignon were cooked exactly as we asked and flavored deliciously. Brussels sprouts and charred broccoli were a perfect compliment to our meals. My main dish was undercooked as I asked for it med well and it came out med rare. I sent it back and not 2 min later it came out with the cut sides seared, but still med rare??? The chef came out and apologized, but really, who is check6the plates before they go out. Could not finish it. This is the 3rd time I've been there and all 3 times I've had an issue. I was blown away by this place. They offer a 3 course pre-fixe menu Tuesday-Thursday nights for $39.99, so we went here just for that. The only downfall to that route is you have to sit in the piano room or at the bar. They don't offer the pre-fixe in the main dining room, but depending on where you sit in the piano room or at the bar, you can still get a pretty decent view of the NYC skyline. To start, we went with the baby arugula with dried cranberries, candied pecans, Vermont goat cheese, and maple-balsamic vinaigrette and the soup of heirloom squash and gala apples, infused with cinnamon. Both were really good. I loved the bisque-like consistency of the soup, but the salad could have used a little more goat cheese. For the mains, we went with the grilled salmon with parmesan risotto and lobster sauce. The portion didn't look all that generous, but it was filling. The duck and truffle ravioli with wild mushrooms, diced celery root, carrots and black truffle sauce was banging. Super fresh. For the pre-fixe dessert, they let you pick whatever you want from the regular dessert menu, which has at least 10 options on it. I really wanted the "Grand Chocolate Voila" (Banana Ice Cream, Caramel Bananas, Chocolate, Hot Banana Anglaise Sauce), but having already eaten two bananas and a bunch of chocolate during the day, we went with the mango panna cotta and the orange sake crème brûlée instead. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by the portions at this place. I was expecting to taste each course and to leave on an empty stomach. But for $40, you get your money's worth. Maria was an outstanding server. At one point, we couldn't decide between two glasses of wine, so she brought both to taste. Definitely an ideal spot for special occasions. If you're getting married and balling out, this is the place to have your reception. My only complaint about this place is the confusion of getting seated. We approached a woman sitting down just as we walked in and told her we had a reservation in the piano room. Rather than taking us there, she pointed to the room. It turns out we were supposed to see the host standing before the main dining room, but she didn't tell us that. So other than looking like idiots for a hot minute, all else was good. Located in the Eagle Rock Reservation (really, a park, no Indians here), this restaurant overlooks the cliffside that shows the New York skyline. The restaurant (casino) has quite the history - read about it on the back of their menu. Valet parking up front. A large entry with a coat check and stairs up to a party area greets you, with a view of part of the kitchen. Bathrooms to the left. To the right, a nice bar, with open seating in the late spring, summer and early fall. Plenty of foreign beers here and some local beers. Decent wine selection, too. Chimay blue to start... Jacket pretty much required here, ladies and gents. It's a nice place. Servers are attentive, if not for the fact that they have an accent at times that can be difficult to understand what they are saying. They have water tapped from a well below the reservation... slightly strange taste, but seems filtered okay. The servers can forget drinks because they don't write things down, but a quick reminder gets it out. They also don't always understand your order... had the wrong appetizer brought to me... lol. I started with a Jumbo Lump Crabmeat Salad - no kidding, it was a lot of lump crabmeat in a tower covered with a bit of herb, lemon, avocado, and mango mustard drizzled on the plate. Tasty. The seafood tower had raw clams, oysters on the half shell, a full lobster, cocktail shrimp, seasoned shrimp, and scallops in lemon juice. Very good so far... The soup of vichyssoise with crab meat was ... watery for a creamy soup, and unimpressive. The mushroom soup was better - fresh marinated sliced mushrooms formed the base where they poured the soup over. That was better, according to my dining partners for the night. Not impressed with soup, though. Had the main course of duck ravioli (they make custom ravioli each day). The dish was a bit too salty, but tasty, with pate (go figure) there. It's a decidedly French dish, but not really easy to eat with all the salt in the dish. Post-dinner dessert was a simple blood orange sherbet. Definitely overly tart but refreshing. Tea and coffee at the end, of course. Overall, one of four courses of the meal done well, service well-done despite the mishaps in giving me what I ordered at times. They were very attentive with the water (one guy just running around getting it). Service is here, if nothing else. And a great view. The food... eh, I've had better, but then again if you're here, it's less about the food, more about the "romantic" sense and the "awe" of looking out at the view. Plus to be seen, of course. I could do without that. Service probably is the best reason to return. You can certainly impress people that way. read more

My husband took me here for a birthday dinner, because we had driven past Highlawn Pavilion tons of times on the way to the movie theater or 280. Here are all the aspects of why one would go to Highlawn, and my opinion on each: The View - yes, Highlawn does have a nice sweeping view of NYC and Eastern NJ, but the NYC skyline is actually quite far away, after a large expanse of relative darkness that is Jersey. It was nice to be able to gaze out the window and admire the lights, but if you are seriously craving a good view of the skyline it's probably better to drive that extra 30 mins to Jersey City and eat there instead. The Service - I was happy with the service. Very attentive and courteous. I could find no fault with our wait staff and our water glasses were always full. The Ambiance - If you like old-fashioned classy, I think this fits the bill. I find the décor outdated but it's probably the perfect place to take your in-laws or grandparents and have them say, "My, Billy has grown to be such a responsible young man!" at the end of the dinner. The Food - I was looking forward most to trying out their food, but was somewhat disappointed. Not bad, but not great, especially for what I expected with their price point. I had the duck pappardelle pasta - lots of ground duck for sure but the pasta-meat ratio was off. Lamb shank was good but not remarkably memorable. Their appetizers and desserts were the same - like a really good wedding banquet but nothing mindblowing. Overall, this is a really safe place to take relatives, in-laws, business associates, etc... but would I say this was a personal favorite of mine? Not really. I tend to write flowery, funny reviews that smack of honesty. I try to be fair when it comes to weighing good and bad experiences, because I'm not sure I follow the adage that "one bad apple spoils the bunch." However, the second (and last) experience I had at HP placed it in a category of unredeemable, and there is nothing funny about the experience I had. A week before Valentine's Day my fiancee called HP to make a reservation. The conversation was almost comically long, but when he got off the phone he looked a bit puzzled. Apparently after giving his name for the reservation, the woman on the phone informed my fiancee that a dress code was required in the dining room, and that if we did not heed the dress code, we would not be allowed to dine. The woman also informed him that it was a prix fixe menu, told him the price TWICE, and asked if he was "sure" he wanted to keep the reservation. Mind you, all of this was completely unprompted, we'd gleaned this information from the website before making the reservation. Maybe she just wanted to ensure we were informed, but it should be noted she only felt the need to emphasize price and dress code after she heard my fiancee's "ethnic-sounding" name. As we are both Black physicians we are somewhat used to being looked at as if we do not belong when we dine at certain establishments in certain areas. We just know where not to spend our money. However, my fiancee remained intent on dining at HP, he loves the food, and intended to confront the hostess if she was present. On 2/15/20 we arrived for our reservation and were taken to a table in the main dining room at the back corner of the restaurant. Now, this restaurant has breathtaking views of the reservation on which it sits, and the NYC skyline. I tried to write it off that they were seating people at the periphery to enjoy the views... but it absolutely MUST be noted that we were in a corner with three other Black couples. It was literally a corner for people of color and nobody else. The one other group of Black diners were sitting on the exact opposite side of the restaurant in another corner. The middle of the restaurant was full of Caucasian patrons. And hilariously, at least two of these patrons were wearing everyday jeans, which we were specifically told we were not allowed to wear during our disastrous reservation conversation. The kicker, was that our waiter, who was average at best (not good, not bad), WROTE IN the tip on our receipt. I understand that sometimes there is a mandatory gratuity, especially with prix fixe menus, but that was not the case for this meal. We checked again as we sat at the table because I was confused as to why he would write in the gratuity instead of it being printed on the receipt. That was the last straw. We paid for our meal, fixed the ridiculous gratuity the waiter tipped himself, and left. Instead of the 30% we usually tip, and instead of the 20% he wrote in, he received the 18% an average waiter should receive. How dare you, sir. I will never dine at Highlawn Pavilion again. I won't even give the establishment the courtesy of discussing the food. We've eaten here before this experience, and it was nothing like this. However, in this day and age, I will not let these things pass. SHAME ON HIGHLAWN PAVILION. If the fact that my money is green means less to you all than the fact that my skin is Black, then don't worry about seeing me again. It has been quite some time since I have experienced such obvious racism, glad to know it is still alive and well. read more

I brought a client to the Highlawn since it was close to a meeting we were attending. The service was impeccable. The view was nice although unfortunately a little hazy that day, not their fault but it seems to be the main reason people make their way up here. I ordered a grilled salmon salad. The fish portion was quite large and well cooked but the "salad" was very greasy tasting. Nice wine menu though, I had an Oregon Pinot Grigio. Then the trio of Creme Brulee with a cappuccino for desert. Tahitian Vanilla, Spiked Chocolate and Ginger. The chocolate was my favorite, the ginger was a little mealy. The restaurant was actually converted from a casino built in 1900's. The interiors are loosely designed as if you were in an Italian Palazzo. I have actually been in a lot of Palazzo's and none of them looked like this, sorry but a little tacky. I was very disappointed to find your average, scratchy paper towels pilled by the sink... The atmosphere is great. You will love the view, the service, and the decor. A lot of care and effort is clearly given to creating a wonderful customer experience. Yet I continue to be disappointed by the food. This is the second time I have eaten here. The first time was two years ago to celebrate a friend's birthday. That night the food looked wonderful but it lacked the flavor its appearance suggested. During my most recent visit I tried the bar menu. I ordered their signature pizza and a mojito. The mojito was delicious! The pizza however was ruined by too much truffle oil. It was 3pm and I hadn't eaten since early that morning. I decided the pizza would have to do as I had no intention of waiting another 15 minutes to replace the order. My pizza didn't taste like a pizza. It's that combination of flavors that meld into one beautiful symphony that make you love pizza. This pie tasted more like a melted cheese sandwich that had been pan fried in truffle oil and doused with a little more truffle oil to finish it off. My server was generous. When she found out why I didn't want my leftovers, she requested it be removed from my check. I didn't ask for the courtesy but she extended it anyway. Tip to management, invest in new recipes for your guests. Make the food taste as delicious as it looks. Keep the drinks the same. Keep the staff the same. read more

I have heard good things about the highlawn pavilion in the past but it seems like new ownership of "the highlawn" has driven this place into the ground. The rock shrimp appetizer was pretty good I have to say but the rest were pretty bad honestly. The pork belly was straight up cold like it's been prepared hours before and reheated for dinner service. The wagyu tartare was pretty much ruined by the wetness of the soy dashi, very off putting. The steaks were decent but ultra salty and lacked the flavor it should have. The salmon was overall pretty bad. This may be an opinion but the meal as a whole didn't really work. The best meal was the Chilean seabass. It was cooked really well but the rest of the meal was very forgettable. May as well as not included the vegetables at all. For the price this place charges it's almost criminal to put out that quality of food. The sides like the mashed potatoes were lukewarm which was also off putting. I personally thought the mashed potatoes were terrible. Way too much going on and didn't even taste like mashed potatoes. There are SO MANY other places that are much much better in NJ for half the price. The view is cool but who cares when the food is bad. I feel like I could cook a meal just as good if not better and I've only been a chef for 8 years. Our waiter was nice and guided us in the right direction which is why I gave 2 stars. My family and I took my Mom out for her birthday last night. The place was run very sloppy. The drinks, apps, and entrees took a long time to get. My Dad ordered the Salmon and it was the size of a hockey puck. My girlfriend and I order the rigatoni mezze, it looked like a kids meal dish....We finished the meal in about 2 mins. Very fancy and classy place. You can feel it as soon as you walk in. The front lobby is just beautiful... with it's high ceiling and the gorgeous sparkly chandelier. Red velvet ribbons across the windows... just a beautiful sight to see. You walk through this large open kitchen with displays of wine and desserts in glassed cases on your way to be seated. (lots of awards for "best romantic restaurant") There's a large bar with lots and lots of alcohol and drink selections. There's a whole row of different beers right on the side of the bar that'll make any beer drinker happy. Window seating is first come first serve. Please aim for the window seats if you plan on not eating here often, since it is the best place for the view and adds to the experience that much more. Large large windows for you to see the beautiful new york skyline. There's valet parking and a coat check. Food: First thing I noticed is it's very seafood heavy. Most of the appetizers are seafood related. + Rabbit Ravioli: delicious. Super flavorful and warm and tasty. The ham in it is just slightly overpowering but still good. + Crabmeat Salad: huge chunks of crabmeat that'll make crab eaters happy. The mango sauce is not the best but other than that, the dish was delicious. It was light in taste but such a huge portion made it filling. The avocado on the bottom was super delicious. + Bread: the bread they gave was with thyme, olive, regular and like a cruton disk. I wasn't a huge fan of the different breads. + Venison: really flavorful entree. Huge portion of meat... definitely filling and enough for a hearty meat eater. I like the light sauce because you really get to appreciate the flavors of the meat itself. (Not a huge venison lover in general though. But still, delicious for what it was). It is slightly more game-y than I like my meats. + Short Ribs with mashed potatoes and carrots & mushrooms: This was one of the specials of the night (not on menu). It had good short ribs flavors. Nothing super special about it. + Flourless chocolate cake: very rich and full of chocolate goodness. Sure to please any chocolate lover. + Raspberry Hazelnut napoleon: I like this a lot. Definitely a portion big enough for 2 to share. I could not finish mine. It had a lot of chanilli cream. Really good hazelnut cake discs and it came with honey ice cream that was super yummy. Waiter wasn't especially friendly. He was very curt with us. I asked him for suggestions on my entree and he was not really into talking to us... he was like "uhm, they're all different... just get the short ribs." I was not about to talk to him much after that. I thought for a classier restaurant the wait staff would be friendlier. This took away from the star rating. Driven by a thousand times and just never ate here. Made a 7:30 reservation pretty easily the afternoon of. The place has a grand appearance that would be appealing to a different generation. And that's pretty much who was sitting around us. Tons of early birds just finishing up. We didn't order entrees. Instead we ended up splitting 5 apps. We did mostly seafood and the meat platter. Nothing wowed us and plating was strange. The best thing was the cold seafood combo but hey - you can't really go right or wrong - nothing was cooked. For $22 it was definitely a bargain. Service was excellent. I'd try it again just to see if entrees are any better. read more

I had my Bridal shower there in the Wine cellar about a week ago. To sum the whole experience up in one word, Wow. I originally was having the shower at a different restaurant but about three weeks prior to the event plans fell through and we ended up at the Highlawn. I was so thankful that we ended up having the event there! Paul was phenomenal and very accommodating. They gave us the wine cellar for the afternoon, vallet parking, passed h'ourderves, three course meal, dessert platter and cake made by their in house pastry chef. The food was amazing. I had the chicken, most women had the salmon, but i also heard great things about the pasta dish. The cake was finished by the end of the day...that's how delicious it was. I was very impressed with the attention to detail the staff provided. I was offered beverages as I was getting ready and their staff kept checking in on me to make sure I was taken care of and I wasn't even the bride! Just be aware that the grounds are public so if you are having an event there could be people walking around who are not apart of your party. There were other events going on simultaneously but you wouldn't of even known. My mother and bridesmaids picked the perfect venue for an afternoon Sunday bridal shower. read more

Mother's Day 2033 the worst. sand in arugula and basil. extremely loud patrons family members of staff. dinner was 3 hours. coffee was terrible. when we spoke to matre' de he told us to take tip off of bill. why would he suggest the server not get paid when the restaurant should deduct at least one meal from the check? the food is what was off. not the service. and the tip was already included as "other" charge. I will not go back there again. we paid the tip and added $20 to the tip for server. we should have demanded 1 meal price removal from bill but would they take that money from the server anyway? seems like that's what they would do. not the way to do business if you want customers to come back. read more
