Overly expensive for underwhelming food and meat you have to cook. Honestly if you like the idea of cooking your own meal I'd recommend finding a good all you can eat Korean bbq where they bring you premium cuts for half the price and good sides. We got the sweet corn, it was obviously canned and came with a butter stick on top ( I'm paying 50$ for raw meat the least you can do is butter my CANNED CORN) and the mashed potatoes had no flavor. My steak was good.. thanks to me. And the bread was stale and cold I'm assuming we were supposed to cook that as well. 2 stars for ambiance and our nice server. read more

This is an experience. You cook your own meat on volcanic stones. They are super hot and if you don't like to try cooking your own meat you won't enjoy this. Be aware that adding butter over the top of your meat while it's searing will cause some splashing and little hot droplets of butter may land on you. We ordered the Volcanic Punch with the take home specialty punch dish/mug. It's very cute and comes out with a flame coming out from the middle. It tasted good, not overly alcoholic and not too sweet. Easy to drink but if I went again I would get my own drink because it's a little annoying sliding the drink across the table every few minutes so each person can take a sip. We started with the Seared Ahi Tuna which you cook on the lava stone. This one is easy because you just sear it really well on each side and can eat the inside pretty raw. Then we had an order of the mussels. These come in a tomato based sauce which was good but we had hoped for a more butter or wine base. Then we shared the seafood trio and steak trio. The scallops were fantastic! The salmon I wasn't that fond of. All the steak trio meats were delicious but do take longer to cook on the stone. I will say the quality of meat was pretty good. Our server was very informative and funny! The restaurant is a little smoky inside because of all of the cooking happening at eat table. Hands down one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. I was staying across the street at treescapes and wanted to try here for dinner. I've only ever cooked on a lava stone once before, so I was excited to do it again. The tiki theme in here is well executed and super cute. Obviously I had to get the shark bite drink and take home the shark cup because now I'm prepared for shark week. I forwent apps because I had a feeling the meal itself would be filling and it definitely was for me at least (I'd been swimming all day). My salmon was delish and I appreciated my waiter's instructions on how to cook it. I also grilled up my side of broccoli and some extra mushrooms and onions in butter on the stone. The garlic mashed potatoes on the side too were a great call. I'd literally drive 14 hours at least one way to come back here and eat, I'm not kidding. Beyond delicious, it's an experience to remember for sure. read more

Their food may or may not be be good. I walked out with my family after being sat at a dirty table that was visibly grimy, with food still on the table. The restaurant was mostly empty, not remotely busy. If a mostly empty restaurant sits people at dirty tables theyre slacking and cleaning tables, I suspect their kitchen would reflect the dirtiness. read more

I've wanted to come here for awhile and we finally did. Honestly I don't know if I need to go back. The prices seem high for what you get. The bread was not edible. Like way overcooked it tasted burnt. The decor is super cute though. The waitress was nice enough. Apparently they're going cashless but didn't have a notice anywhere so when I went to pay they didn't want to take my money and wanted me to use a card. After talking to a manager and reiterating that I didn't need change (which seemed to be the problem with taking cash) they finally allowed it. read more

We went on a Friday night for dinner at 7:45pm. I would highly recommend a reservation if on the weekend. We were taken to the table fast and provided menus. The waiter explained to us how the experience worked. The drinks were good and the food took a little to come out. But we were informed the little wait time due to a larger party getting their orders first. The steak was seasoned great and being able to cook it to you own living was nice. The place is a literal hotbox, almost unbearable to breathe in due to all the smoke in the air and no circulation. On top of this had a reservation for 8:15pm. Didn't get seated until 8:45pm. Didn't get served our food until 9:45pm. I don't think anything more needs to be said. How about you learn how to run a restaurant or get out of the business? How long does it take to slap some raw meat on the table that we have to cook ourselves anyway? Kids food was absolutely disgusting. Mac and cheese looked like from a Kraft box and chicken strips tasted like McDonald's. My wife ended up not getting her food at all, and I didn't eat mine, because I got a luke warm rock that my fillet boiled to a "grey on the outside, raw on the inside" consistency, and cold broccoli and carrots. First time here, first impression of the place was pretty cool. the ambiance was tiki themed. we both got souvenirs cups since it is our first time in the area. went for the full tourist experience. We got the salt and pepper calamari. it was good. it came with two lemon wedges and their dipping sauce. I got the salmon entree and my partner for the new york strip. food was decent. you are going more for the experience. Excelent service by Dimitri. However, the food was a huge letdown: the protein that comes on the Rock is decently seasoned but the seasoning burns instantly. The sides are atrocious (had steamed baby carrots that tasted how moth balls smell and broccoli that fall apart upon touching it! The sauces that come with the protein are so sweet you cannot taste anything after. The experience and the idea was good but there is so much smoke we could barely breathe and other guest around us kept coughing due to the smoke. read more

This place was just okay. The best part was the courteous staff, however the food was just average. The catch is you cook your own food on a 750 degree lava rock directly at your table. Unfortunately, while the rock is hot, my sides (broccoli and mashed potatoes) were cold. If you enjoy an interactive cooking experience, this may be the place for you. We've driven by Hot Rocks a few times over the years but never tried it until last evening. We were seated right away, our waiter explained how it worked and gave us ample time to review the menu. I ordered the top sirloin with garlic mashed and carrots, my husband got the filet medallions with wild rice and broccoli and my daughter got Mac n cheese with fries. The food came out very quickly and the steaks were starting to cook on the rock. We decided to cut them and cook little pieces at a time so it was hot with every bite which was perfect. The steaks were seasoned perfectly and was good quality meat. We enjoyed everything a lot. We ordered the beniets with Nutella mousse for dessert and they were amazing. Hot Rocks is my family's go-to dinner spot when we come to the Dells. I've been here twice so far, and my parents have been here FOUR times. Yes, it's become somewhat of a tradition to hit up Hot Rocks during our stay and we wouldn't change a thing. They have these light-up palm trees outside of their restaurant where my family always takes a post-dinner photo. It could be blizzarding, it could be during the summer, but we will always snap a photo to commemorate our meal here. The interior's theme is tropical island, with thatched straw/dried palm leaves as decor. Kids and adults alike will be transformed to an island and adults will have the opportunity to order strong drinks in tiki mugs (which you can take home for an extra fee). Everyone will have fun cooking their own meal on a piping "hot rock" that heated to over 200°F. You can order tons of meat/seafood options and combinations. There are options for vegetarians too! The most recent time we were here, my partner ordered the rack of lamb lollipops, and my dad and I ordered the 10oz ribeye. My mom got the seafood trio (salmon filet, 2 shrimps, 2 scallops). We shared calamari and a large Caesar salad, and we each got a kaleidoscope of bright and boozy drinks, fit for a Dells vacation of all adults :) We even got to take home their "limited edition" ceramic Santa mug that came with one of their signature drinks. It's a fun experience every time, cooking our meals and the meat/protein to our liking. Every entrée comes with the choice of two sides (get the garlic mash!). You may not get the quality of a ($$$$) very expensive steak house where everything is à la carte, but you will get a hands-on experience and the food always comes out quickly because YOU are the chef. Hot Rocks is a solid four stars! It's nostalgia. It's that Dells-vacation laidback-ness. If we cannot fly to Maui to escape the frigid Chicago cold, we will always head to our beloved Midwest Hot Rocks. read more

The service was wonderful. We were promptly greeted and the menu items were thoroughly explained. Instead of a barbecue grill at each table , each individual had a rectangular piece of hot lava rock to cook his/her food. A very interesting and unique way of cooking. Each person cooked their own food individually to their liking. We ordered the Hot Rocks Fudge Volcano vanilla ice cream served on top of a frozen lava rock for a delightful dessert. Two waffle cones were filled with ice cream and turned upside down with strands of red licorice coming out of the its top to artistically depict an erupting volcano. The piece of chocolate by the side completes the volcanic artistry of the presentation. The food was great and the service was excellent. A tropical island atmosphere provided a relaxing and unique ambiance to end your busy day. read more

I sat with wife and 2 daughters under 10 years old, we all had dishes that required cooking on the stones, which left zero room for the actual plate to put said food on after cooked. This is is neat little restaurant. They have an adequate parking lot. They also have a decent sized dining area, bar seating with full bar service, and covered patio seating. The bar is located in the front lobby along with a small gift shop where you can buy mugs, shirts and other Hot Rock merch. The restaurant is like a tiki bar. They have some of the best tropical drinks in the area. They were delicious and you can buy with or without a souvenir glass. It is very clean and dimly lit. The restaurant has a very friendly staff and there is a button on the tables that you can press to get service. They have a menu with kids meal items such as mach and cheese and chicken fingers. Their main bread and butter is food that you cook on a hot rock right at your table. You can get stuff like, steak, chicken and shrimp. I got the skirt steak with carrots and potatoes wedges. The steak came out raw on the magical rock. They asked me how I liked my meat cooked, which I replied medium well. They then instructed my how to cut the meat and how long to leave it on the rock for each side. I cooked it as per their instructions and my meat came it perfect. It was so flavorful and delicious. That rock was magic. I do not know how they do it. The sides that came with it, you get 2 by the way, were also good. There is not a lot of food though, so you may have to get something else or cap off with some dessert. This was a very nice experience, but is a pretty pricey and not something that you would do everyday. You are the cook. It is a unique experience that you and your family can share. Our family of 2 parents and 3 young adult children visited Hot Rocks in WI Dells hoping for a new food experience. The concept was unique but the prices were outrageous for cooking your own food that was average at best. We gave them a pass on the $2 charge for additional bread. We could not excuse them for the 18% fee ($31 for us) because we had a "large group". We have been a family of 5 for 21 years and NEVER heard of this. The server said its something restaurants do! No signs posted or warnings this would be added to our bill. Please be advised. read more

The place was gorgeous! Everywhere you looked gave vacation beach vibes. I went to hot rock with my family which consists of 3 kids ages 13 and younger. The service was amazingly fast and our food came at record speeds. There was a small tiki with buttons on the top that you could use to call your waitress over whenever you wanted. Or if you needed the check there was a separate button for that. The food was served on a hot lava rock. The youngest in our group was 7 years old but even she was able to cook her own steak. The waiters gave simple instruction on to how to cook your steak and if you wished for a more or less well done steak how to reach your desired meal. Everyone loved their food and we loved trying the new experience of making your own steak. The people who served us were beyond kind and were a huge part in making our visit so fabulous. For desert we were at first worried that it would not be enough for all five of us to enjoy but they gave us one that was more than plenty for us all. My family is head over heels for hot rock and I would recommend it for anyone looking for a fun place to eat in the dells. read more

I'm avid listener to talk radio and I recently heard about this restaurant on WRMN 1410AM - Elgin, Illinois. So we drove up from Chicago, to spend Columbus Day at the Dells and check out the fine dining situation. This is a wonderful eating experience, the food sizzles on a hot rock plate. The decor when we walked in was very nice and tiki theme oriented. The drinks were creative and had a certain charm to them. As for the food I was expecting it to be a bit more flavorful and it was good, just not great. The service was also a bit slow and our appetizers came out with the meal and we had to hit the service button a few times to get a server over. Now a busy night I can understand but the fact that there were several available tables was a bit ehh. Overall it was a good experience although next time we visit I think we will try other places. It was my daughter 18th birthday. I ordered the steak in the house salad. She ordered the steak potatoes and macaroni and cheese. My niece ordered the salmon potatoes, house salad. My niece salmon was half freezer burn how I don't know so she told the waiter and before she could even tell the waiter her issue, he cut her off. She was a bit pissed off about that because he didn't even know what she wanted. They did we make her another half for her and she loved it. The reason I gave you 3 star after that, the waiter seem to be standoffish when it was time to sing, happy birthday. They did not do it for my daughter when I did it for other customers, the place was beautiful inside I do would definitely return, but I want to be treated equally just like everyone else. read more

While waiting on food, lighting was good, seating looked abundant, cute tiki-like bar when you enter which is great when waiting for a table. They take reservations and walk ins. Food wasn't good. Paying $15 for this salad is crazy. I expected at a place with this kind of menu it would be really good. Kids menu Mac and Cheese was ok. It was creamy but tasted cheap and like they used a pre-made sauce. Fries are like Culver's but tasteless. Salad was salty with too much dressing and small tasteless croutons.
