This was 1 of 3 carts of housing, LED lights, smart switches, dimmers, no thanks to San Mateo HD.

I went into this Home Depot ready to spend a few thousand dollars on recessed lighting housings, trims, and switches for a remodel. We knew we needed some guidance to make sure we were buying the right stuff, so we asked for help in the electrical department and were told someone would be with us shortly. We ended up waiting about 15-20 minutes, which honestly was fine. We were patient and totally willing to wait since this was a pretty big purchase and we wanted to get it right. While we were waiting, the only people who actually tried to help were employees from other departments who were doing their best to step in. When someone from electrical finally showed up, though, the vibe was completely different. It felt like we were interrupting their day rather than asking for help as customers ready to buy a lot of product. Whether they were having a bad day or just didn't care, there was basically zero interest in actually helping us figure out what we needed. We explained we were there to buy a large amount of lighting and just wanted to make sure we left with the correct materials, and still got little more than a point down the aisle. I was also told there's a newer manager who's only been there a month or two, and based on this experience it feels like the electrical department might have some disengaged or frustrated staff right now. The contrast between employees from other departments trying to help and the lack of effort from electrical was pretty noticeable. We were ready to spend real money and were willing to wait, but the lack of basic service was a major turnoff. We ended up leaving without buying anything and will probably take this purchase to a lighting supply store or another location where someone actually wants to help. ***Updated*** After Home Depot San Mateo thought it fit to respond. Yes, I got it resolved by going to a DIFFERENT Home Depot that wasn't San Mateo.

This Home Depot location has a steady stream of customers, but it's not too bad. There's various food places around it and tons of parking. I've gone here a couple of times to purchase random things, and you have to be a little proactive about getting help if you need it. Recently went to rent equipment to clean a car interior (portable spot and detailer) and the process was pretty smooth. They don't really tell you how to use anything, so you have to figure everything out yourself. We didn't realize we needed to buy our own cleaning solution, so we just used a random cleaner from home. Basically, we just went up to the counter, rang the service bell, asked for an extractor or something to clean a car interior with, and he said yep this is the thing you probably need, wrote us the invoice... and we were like, uh yeah so how do you use this? Then he just said to put liquid in and there you go. Haha. Be sure to note how long you will rent for, as you can go by the hour or day. They also offer limited discounted used equipment for sale.

The yellow mark shows where I was standing.

This is probably the most outrageous experience I've ever had at Home Depot. I strongly suspect I was racially discriminated against. At the lumber door checkout, I was told I wasn't in line simply because I wasn't standing exactly in the center line between the two cashiers. They told me to go get in line and then let someone who arrived after me check out first. I was the only Asian person in the entire line. When I was standing there, there was no one behind me at all. I had already been waiting there in line for at least five minutes. Then they acted as if I didn't even exist and allowed the person behind me to pay. When I said I was in line, they insisted I wasn't because I wasn't standing exactly in the middle -- so it "didn't count." But the thing is, other people were also standing slightly to the left or right. No one was perfectly centered. There were no floor markings or guide lines indicating where to stand.

Rented a van with 3/4 tank of gas and returned it with 3/4. The guy tried to tell me that the tank wasn't 3/4 full (see picture). Had to go back and fill it up completely just so I didn't get charged their ridiculous gas rates. Guy at rental counter needs an attitude adjustment.

Love having a Home Depot this big in San Mateo--the size and selection are super valuable. Finding someone to help can be hit-or-miss, but overall it's still a very good experience for me.

Service is hit and miss, usually miss and missed big. If the website says it's in stock and on aisle XYZ, that means it won't be there. There is a total disconnect between what they say online and what is on the shelf for you to physically grab. When you are able to find someone to help, you should buy a lottery ticket that day. The Gods shine on you with good fortune. When they do find the missing product, it's still wrapped up on a pallet in the warehouse in back, and they will stock it on the shelves when they get around to it. At least they have parking.

Abe is a knowledgeable and kind person - he knows the store well and took me to the product after I went up and down isles and could not find the quarter inch plastic rivets for the patio chair strapping. Abe is a great asset to Home Depot and should make you proud that he chose to work for Home Depot. Thanks Abe!!

I chose the Paradise spray as the young man who had passed away really liked Hawaii. I asked the young lady that took the order whether it's large or if I pay more would it be larger and she said all the sprays are the same size and if you pay more, they would just add more flowers but the size would be the same. So, I asked her to charge me more for more flowers $300 and go from there. Told her it's for a young man who has passed away and I want it to be special. After calling someone to make sure they can do this arrangement due to the fact that they were very busy with weddings that weekend, She assured me that it would be done and made special. She even said that they have all the flowers in-season to be able to make this spray. At he church service on Friday I was so EMBARRASSED by the arrangement. It was small and not balanced (maybe it was missing the leaves around it... not sure) but it looked terrible or maybe the florist just didn't take the time to arrange in properly. I think they should not take additional business when they cannot handle it. I know the cost of a funeral spray does not compare to the revenue they get for a wedding but this was important to me and I wanted something special for my loved one. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to take a picture because I did not want anyone associating those flowers with me. After calling the store, a couple of people (Regina and then Mark) called me back and just apologized; At first offering to refund me 50% but then rescinding that offer. Their messages mentioned that I was charged appropriately for the arrangement and they would contact me but I never heard back after leaving my review. There should be better training of their staff when a customer orders so they do not give the wrong information about the size of an arrangement and also, not take on additional business when they cannot handle it. Think twice about ordering a one-off arrangement from here; their focus is only on big-ticket revenue from weddings.

Juliana's vision is that your backyard should be an extension of your home, another room. Working with Juliana was wonderful. She listened to our ideas and came up with an initial plan that we tweaked a couple times until we had a final design . It is now a space we are drawn to and use often. It truly is an extension of our home. Juliana and Mauricio (who she works with on the hardscape) did a wonderful job in transforming our yard. Communication with her was excellent. After meeting with a…read morecouple of other designers who either wanted to completely redo our front/rear yards or were super expensive (one company had a minimum job fee of $15,000!!) our plans to fine tune the back yard & redo the front yard had been put on hold. After a young driver in a big pick up truck plowed through our front yard on a rainy day, the search was on again to redo the front yard in a way that would also provide some sort of safety barrier. Juliana came to the rescue with incredibly artistic & creative designs for the front & rear yards. For the front yard, with the use of metal gabion boxes filled with large rocks, they will provide a structural safety barrier while also looking artistic (pictures to follow once they're installed). She also has vast knowledge of unique plants which will complement our Spanish style home. For the rear yard she came up with great solutions for helping us incorporate more seating & more privacy by changing a few layout features as well as supplementing existing bamboo & plants. Our other design challenge with the back yard which Juliana creatively solved: We have dogs who are tormented by squirrels running up & down our redwood tree. In an effort to keep our dogs from climbing & chewing the tree we've had a makeshift wooden barrier at the base of the tree which is none too attractive. Juliana is going to build a wood surround to protect the tree but which also adds an interesting design element to the yard. I wish we'd had the foresight to hire a designer from the get go rather then doing bits & pieces on our own only to redo our work since it didn't quite deliver. It is money well spent to hire a designer. Either way, thanks to Juliana we're super excited to get our yards projects implemented!
