I loooooooved this place! Total foodie place in cute downtown Dunedin. I'd never been to a Hawaiian restaurant before so many of the items on the menu were new to me like the Spam Masubi which is basically grilled spam on a block of rice wrapped in seaweed wrap. At first I was skeptical because I'm not big on spam but I'm glad I tried it cuz it was so good! I wanted to get another one! For my meal I got the Huli Huli Chicken - pulled chicken on a Hawaiian roll bun with jalapeño citrus aoli which I asked for on the side. Seriously one of the best sandwiches I've ever had in my life. All the flavors together work perfectly and are just simply delicious. The ONLY reason I am giving 4 stars is because the service could have definitely been better. I think it was just our waiter because the table next to us had a different waiter and she was excellent and on top of her tables. Our waiter kept us waiting a lot and we even had to go find him. I went to The Honu with a few friends on a Sunday recently for brunch. The atmosphere was nice. The house was really cute. The food and drinks were great. I had the mimosa flight, which comes with three glasses of champagne and mango, orange and pineapple juice. We shared the tuna poke as an appetizer, which I've been dreaming about since. The tuna was so fresh and tender. I had the breakfast tacos for my meal, and they were solid. Our server was attentive, but the only reason I didn't give this place five stars was for how long it took to get our food. It wasn't very busy, and I want to say it was close to 45 minutes from ordering by the time we got our entrees. We weren't in a rush, but it was definitely long. Food: 2 of the party thought meals were ok (nothing spectacular, but good) 1 loved (and wanted to lick the plate clean), the last person (who rarely "hates" a meal), hated it and left hungry. The pineapple salsa was out of this world fabulous - I'd go back for that and drinks and stay away from the dialing music issue. The rice (used in several dishes ordered) was waaaaaaaay overcooked and turned into a sticky mush in some parts ....not so good when that's the base of your meal (the stack dish). We ordered via bitesquad so I haven't been to the restaurant. The food is good, but small portions for the price. We ordered the shepherds pie which is delicious but much smaller than I envisioned. I also got the "your stack" with steak. The steak marinade is good, but definitely different than what I'm used to. The sushi rice was not cooked properly though. We drove from Tampa to dine at Honu and were quite disappointed. The colorful bungalow, the lights and the outside patio were charming ... but the food was far from good. We ordered a poke appetizer, which didn't taste anything like poke, and just wasn't enjoyable. My friend ordered a beef quesadilla which had some awful seasoning or jerk sauce. She and I took a bite of each and neither tasted right. When checked on, we were forthcoming and noted that the quesadilla was not to our liking (the waitress removed the dish), and the chef came out and asked if we wanted anything else, but the restaurant was shutting down, so we said no, thank you. Nevertheless, It was still on the bill. We didn't argue, but believe that it wasn't very good customer service not to have removed even one of the two uneaten dishes or even address it with us when dropping the check. First time here. Food was really good and on the healthier side. My girlfriend had the breakfast tacos and she said they were really good. I had the quinoa bowl with chicken. The quinoa bowl was really good but the portion size was pretty small. We also had the veggie nachos as an appetizer which my girlfriend and I thought was awesome. Service was excellent and our waitress was great at explaining items on the menu. Overall this place was really good. I do recommend getting an appetizer to start because of the portion sizes. Why 5 stars? They deserve them. We went as a party of 6, but we all got there at different times and this was not not a problem for them at all, they were very accommodating while we waited for the rest to join us. The place is a refurbish old house in the heart of down town, it is decorated very nicely , they have outside and inside seating, your choice , they greet you at the door right away and are extremely pleasant . Now as far as the food and beverages go, we all had the pineapple ice tea to drink and loved it, we all ordered different dishes and we were each sampling each other's and everything was excellent, pesto sauces, turkey burgers with an egg on top with pesto and rice, sweet potato fries, bean burgers, coconut soup, etc. etc. I do not remember the names of the dishes that we had as they were Hawaiian names which I'm not too good at pronouncing but they were all excellent , we all had a great experience plan on going back there again soon. As of this writing they were only open from 10 until 3 for lunch/brunch, but they said they will be opening for dinner soon, this is not a breakfast place FYI The only negative I could see is parking but that is pretty much the norm for the downtown area. read more

The Honu is a hidden gem in Downtown Dunedin. The food is absolutely amazing. The food is fresh and unique. The dishes are unlike any others ! If you have not been here you are truly missing out. I had the chicken quesadilla and the grilled shrimp appetizer. It was hands down the best food I have had in a while. Our server was Christina and she AMAZING! So attentive and knowledgeable. She gave us amazing recommendations on drinks appetizers and food. Ive been to the Honu twice and the experiences were both disappointing. Service was not just slow but inattentive. I orderedthe tea and server brought it without straw. I requested it and it never came. I had to find one myself - I was thirsty. The grilled shrimp app came out cold and dry. Horrible. None of our food came out hot ( tacos dos pasos and pork carnitas lunch plate). Unecessarily rigid menu - no choice on so-called " slaw-of-the-day", you get what you get. Tried the Honu for the first time last weekend. I have visited their Taco stand in Largo and their Taco bus many times, so I was expecting good quality and value. I got what I expected. My guest and I both had the Plate Lunch Special. Agave pork, Black beans & yellow rice and home made slaw of the day. Not your traditional Hawaiian Plate Lunch, a little more upscale. Not extremely large portions but just enough and a very good value for $10.00. I will be back to try other items. Inside is a little cramped so I wouldn't sit inside personally. We had the poke (so fresh and delicious) I got the special basil pesto shrimp pasta which was insanely tasty, boyfriend had THE STACK and the pork was super sweet and the slaw on top created exciting flavor profiles! We got the macadamia nut ice cream to finish which was also super good. The owner is also the chef, she came out and introduced herself and personally invited us to the events this weekend! Everything is locally sourced and made from scratch. The portions are correctly sized so if you're looking for a 10lb pile of food to be plopped in front of you, maybe order more than one thing. Enjoyed this delightful place last night with friends. I had heard of it before, but never thought of trying it We had the Salsa Trio with chips as an appetizer. LOVED it. The men in our party had the Cowboy Steak Burger both ate the entire burger. Husband had the sweet potato fries which were crispy, which is how they should be cooked. I had Dos Tacos with shrimp. You could tell the shrimp were fresh and not previously frozen, and probably local shrimp. Everything was just the right portion so it was filling but not over eating size. We did make room for dessert. Three of us had the flourless chocolate tort with blueberries. OMG awesome. Husband had the macadamia nut ice-cream. The ice-cream was good, but the chocolate tort was phenomenal. I forgot to mention the sangria. Our friends had it, and so sorry we did not. We will go back and highly recommend.
