We had a 5:30 reservation for sat 2/27 and upon arrival we were seated promptly. Then we waited 15 mins for waitress to come our table. I inquired about the seafood casserole and waitress went to find the answer and another 15 mins before we saw her again. We ordered and then waited 25 mins for shrimp cocktail then another 30 mins for entrees to arrive. Meanwhile the takeout orders were insane and clearly that affected the poor service and kitchen ability to handle inside tables. We left at 7:10 and clearly 1 hour and 1/2 to get served and eat was ridiculous. This place really needs to better balance inside dining and to go orders. Sadly we will not go back again nor would I recommend them. read more

My wife and I visited the Horse N Carriage for the first time this past Thursday, and it most definitely won't be the last! We sat at the bar and were immediately greeted by Junior, who welcomed us into the restaurant and made us feel at home. He then proceeded to make what can only be described as the most delicious sangria I've ever had, while simultaneously going over the menu with us and making recommendations. We started with the Buffalo Shrimp App (A) then had the Parmesan Crusted Haddock (A+) and a bowl of the Clam Chowder (A+). It was the perfect night and I would highly recommend to anyone who likes good food, good drink, and the excellent service from a great bar tender. read more

It's rare that I post a review but when I see something like this I always post it. Having a good view of the waitress area I noticed the following: Rolls being reused that were previously on tables. Re-warming doesn't make it safe. While the butter products are sealed they shouldn't be reused once they have been on a table...but they were. Handling dirty dishes and THEN using your hands to remove the reused rolls from the warmer.....well that's just gross. Onion rings....great.....fried shrimp....just ok...shrimp scampi has lots of unexpected mushrooms in it....while I love them....my wife hates them....and she ordered it. Me and my husband love the Horse and Carriage! Their Chicken Ambrosia is out of this world! We went for New Years Eve and my husband got the Lamb(first time we both had it) with baked scallops and we both thought it was fantastic. Another one of our local favorites. It's almost impossible to go wrong here. In fact, it *is* impossible to go wrong here. We have never had a bad meal there. Friendly people, great service, comfortable atmosphere, plenty of variety, fabulous food, large portions and very reasonable prices. It doesn't get any better than this as far as we are concerned. Clip the newspaper or on-line coupon and go for the early bird special if you can. There is no better deal around that we are aware of. Alternatively, beat the crowds and head there for lunch. Good for a local place to go. I have never had to wait and while it is a bit pricey I do think it is worth it for a night out. They have a good menu with a lot of different choices. I enjoy their Chicken Gorgonzola a great deal. Have tried a few other dishes and have not been disappointed yet. The service is pretty good as well, have always had friendly service. read more

I met my friend here for lunch a week ago. We both loved the food and received prompt, professional service. They even had a delicious vegetarian special, not easy to find at most restaurants! The part that I was most impressed by, however, was the next day, when I called the restaurant to say that I had forgotten my credit card there. Me and my fiance recently moved to the area and came here for dinner on a weekend night. We had a great time! The hostess really is as friendly, personable and polite as everyone says, and she fit us in quickly despite how busy it was. The menu was huge and had a little bit of everything. I got a large salad with angelhair pasta in it. It sounded a bit strange, but it was so good that I ate the whole thing (and it was HUGE). But then again, a salad doesnt keep well either! My fiance got one of the special fish dinners (swordfish i think) and he loved it. Service was great, portions were large and reasonable. My husband and I had been eating here for over 30 years, on a regular basis. Many years ago, we decided to stop, after a particularly bad experience. However, before that time, we noticed the food quality and preparation had been declining. This was a hard decision, we really, really liked the place; it was our favorite. But, we could get better food at lower prices, from other area restaurants. Recently, we tried it, again, for lunch. Unfortunately, things have not improved and we will keep our distance. Both of us "re-visited" our meal, throughout the afternoon and evening; old, deli turkey in the turkey club and old grease for the clam plate. In our opinion, the kitchen has not improved. This is the second time I have ever posted on yelp and I'm not a negative person. So, in the way of positive feedback, the wait staff has always been pleasant. read more

Horse N Carriage is a great neighborhood spot. The décor isn't exciting, maybe even a tad frumpy, but it has a nice cozy appeal. Everyone who works there it seems has been with the restaurant for years. Its so nice to get that family feeling. We love eating at the bar, if you can get a seat - its like the show cheers in there - everybody knows each other! The menu is a nice new England continental menu, a mix of chicken, fish, pasta and meat. I always order the Baked Haddock - the fish is so fresh, they give you an oversized portion, and its always seasoned to perfection. I try and add a healthy option like steamed broccoli with it. It is very consistent with their dishes, and always seem to offer high quality ingredients. read more

One of my favorite places. I just can't say enough about this place. Great, home style, American food. If you order a salad, don't pass up the Zinfandel vinaigrette dressing. My favorite dishes are the salmon and fish n chips. My mom loves the grilled pork chops, yes there are 2. I would have to say the only item I don't like is the mashed potatoes. Please, please stop using chicken stock in mashed potatoes!!! It just doesn't work. Potatoes, butter, milk and salt/pepper. That is all that you need. read more

Rude. Just called to ask about soup of the day at 11:12. Whoever answered phone said (in a very rushed tone) "I have no idea, the kitchen doesn't open until 11:30." I hesitated, a little shocked that she wouldn't at least take a second to ask the kitchen (as I know they aren't whipping up new batch of soup in 18 minutes). She followed it up with "So I guess you can just call back at 11:30 because thats when the kitchen will tell us what the soup of the day is." Too bad, your loss. My wife and I tried this place for the first time last night and we will be back. Haddock Bellisimo was a fantastic meal. The fish was cooked perfectly and the portion size made for a great lunch today. The stuffed schrod with crabmeat and ritz cracker stuffing was equally delicious, perfectly cooked, moist and just a perfect dinner. Service was great. I have been to this place several times. It is a bit outdated but has a nice atmosphere and service. The service could be slow when they are busy , but I think many places have this problem. The hostess greeted us with a smile and made accommodations for our party. She honored our request of a booth and made us feel at home. The Menu is awesome - so much variety. From club sandwiches to pizza to fish, this place has everything. The food was so - so. My girlfriend got the Horse N' Carriage Club - talk about big. This was the size of two sandwiches in one, skewered by a tooth pick that looked like an old sword. My friend got the pizza - nice in size, but soggy. The food was the only real downside to this place. The prices were reasonable. P.S. - Every night you can take home a cheese pizza for $5. Can't beat it! read more

The food is delicious, service is great, and they have the most wonderful hostess named Natasha who will make your dining experience a joy. Went to the horse and carriage today for about the tenth time favorite place to eat. We sat at the bar and had Timmy for our waiter best man ever. Very friendly and an excellent waiter. Had the fried clams like I usually do and as usual they were excellent!!!!! I asked what his favorite chocolate dessert was and he said the truffle. Just got finished eating it and Timmy you weren't wrong it was the best chocolate thing I've eaten in a long time!!!! Thank you. If you're ever in the neighborhood near Norfolk please visit this restaurant you won't be sorry especially if you have Timmy as a waiter. The first thing you notice when you get there is that this is a place for senior citizens. I guess the "early bird specials" were what brought them in. Went there last night, and this was one of the worst meals I've ever had. The people I was with agreed. One even sent their meal (Stuffed Scrod) back it was so bad. I got the Chicken Fajita salad and it was so salty I almost couldn't eat it. The rolls were tough and salty, the dessert was not even noteworthy. It's pretty hard to mess up a brownie sundae, but when the brownie is raw in the middle it is not very appealing. The service was very slow, the prices aren't bad. We have patronized the Horse N' Carriage on multiple ocassions. To be honest the reviews are mixed at best. My wife enjoys the flavors she has had, where I personnaly would say the food is average at best. But the one thing both my wife and I argee on is the service, here they rate an "F-". While the servers are pleasant there is dirtly little secret about how the general public rates with them, "YOU DON'T". Here is how it works. If they are not busy you will get seated in a reasonable amount of time. But if they are busy be prepared to wait and wait and wait. This would be fine except others don't. If you are one of the "in crowd" (friend or family of an employee or the owner) just walk in and sit down. Here is what happened to us. I called ahead and was told this was their busy time so we might have to wait 5 to 10 minutes upon arriving. We arrived on time and let the hostess know we had arrived. She said it would be a few minute (so far this is fine). She marked off my name on the waiting list and then wrote it down on an other piece of paper under the main list. On both list my name was the third name name not crossed off. Now this is where it gets intriging. 3 parties of 8 plus people arrive and walk in and are seated (this is fine, large parties can make reservations). Meanwhile atleast 8 other parties arrive and flow into the restaurant never to be seen again by my party. We kind of assumed that they were in the bar. Now 30 minutes plus have passed. I went up to the hostess desk and asked about how much longer we could expect to wait and also asked about the other who arrived. She said they were busy and they had a party of 8, 9 and 11 arrive, but no explaination of the other 8 groups of people who arrived (note a mix of 2 to 4 people, my party was for 4 people). But looking down at the list all 3 names were still on the list I saw when I checked in and she said we were third on the list (still, no progress). And I forget to mention quite a few people exited the resturaunt with doggie bags during this time. I'll cut to the chase, about 10 to 12 minutes later we were finally seated. When the server came over I asked what was up with the wait and all the people which appeared to get seated before us. The server said that is how things work there. If you are a 30 year customer, friend or relative of an employee or the owner you have no wait. While I understand you take care of your regulars it would be nice to set our expectations correctly. Plus in the interest of fairness while looking after your regulars they could spread it out and alternate between the regulars and the general public. To sum it up, the food is not worth a 40 plus minute wait and given how we were made to fell we will not be returning. Makes you wonder how quickly they will sink as their regular clientele dies off.
